High Talent
Bailey Musulin (11M) was selected as captain of the NSW U18 basketball team – congratulations, Bailey! There were a few encouraging results from the Grammar Regatta last Saturday. The Year 8 quad scull (Widyatamaka, Wei, Wibowo, Chan and Sun) placed second in division 2. In division 1, Ralph, Trent, Guo, Zheng and Sanjoyo were beaten by just one second by Grammar. The Year 10 1st VIII (Fan, Zhang, Belokopytov, Forday, Qiu, Katafano, Chen, Lethbridge and Xu) rowed to 3rd place, just 9.53 seconds behind winners, Joeys. Congratulations to all crews. Water Polo 1st grade defeated Barker (5-3) on February 1 and Aloysius (7-2) last Saturday. The boys are on a roll! Well done to the teams!

Year 7 Classes – Grouping
Some parents were asking about what the grouping was for this year for Year 7. 7E – High scores on the GAT component of the SSET. 7M – Enhancement class: lower score on the English component than both mathematics and GAT components. 7R – high profile scores in the SSET. 7T – Boys with reported club sport participation in one or two seasons each year.  7S & 7F – Boys were assigned to classes to accommodate the maximum languages preference combinations.

DEC on costs passed on to schools
In the past, associated employment “on-costs” were paid for by DEC. The policy is now that they will be charged to schools. On-costs are charges to employers arising out of employing workers. On-costs include: Annual Leave Loading (1.4%), payroll tax (5.45%), payroll tax on LSL (0.24%), superannuation (11.62%), payroll tax on superannuation (0.49%), superannuation on long service leave (0.12%), accrued leave while on long service leave (0.19%), LSL on-costs (0.04%). The practical effect is that the notional school budget for permanent teachers will be increased by the amount of the on-costs (19.5%). However, any staff employed by the school (in our case >100) will have the on-costs charged to the school each month in the CEPS statement. For most schools the change in policy is mostly an accounting shift from the centre to the school without a significant increase in cost to deliver school programs. For High, running many activities mornings, afternoons, on Friday nights and each Saturday, the impact will be very significant. High will have an estimated increase of $200k in its annual employment costs.  As a school community we have to respond to this challenge to the quality and frequency of our co-curricular activities.

School Council Response to On Costs
Last year the School Council endorsed a variation to the enrolment policy to increase the enrolment ceiling. Years 7 and 8 remain at 180 each, as do Years 9 and 10 at 210 each, but Years 11 and 12 have been increased to 212. By 2015 the enrolment should be 1201. The increase in enrolment will provide additional staff and funding for the school. Some rationalisation in curriculum was made to reduce staff costs. At its February meeting, the School Council approved a 14.5% increase in standard co-payments, levies and charges, effective from this winter season. At least 75% of the costs of running all co-curricular activities are wage costs. Rather than passing on the entire 19.5% of the increase, 75% of the increase will be added to winter season invoices. The School Council will review the table of financial contributions for 2015-16 at its next meeting.

Student Vaccination Program

South-Eastern Sydney Local Health District
Public Health Unit

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Each year, NSW  Ministry of Health offers the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the School Vaccination Program. In 2014 the following vaccines will be offered free:

Year 7 students (male and female students)

• Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine for those who have not previously received chicken pox vaccine or had chicken pox disease- one dose only needed.
• Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine - 3 doses over 3 visits needed.
• Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping cough vaccine. This is a routine adolescent booster for all students- one dose only needed.

The format for the Year 7 Consent Form for 2014 has changed. All 3 vaccines offered are now on the one consent card. You will need to ensue you tick the vaccine box(es) you want to consent for, as well as sign the consent card, or we will not be able to complete the vaccination for your child.

Year 8 (male and female only students)

• Missed doses will be offered up to the end of June 2014, to any student who commenced, but did not complete the course of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine last year when they were in Year 7. The nurses will have the consent forms that you completed last year on the day of vaccination and we will ask the school representative to retrieve the students from class to receive their vaccine. You should have received a letter from us explaining this.

Year 9 (male only students)

• Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as a catch-up vaccination program. The girls in this Year group were offered and should have received vaccination when they were in Year 7; they are not eligible to receive the vaccine whilst in Year 9 at school. 2014 will be the last Year 9 HPV will be offered. (Year 9 Consent Forms will remain the same as per 2013)

Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits and the 11th number beside the child’s name) on the consent form, as this is required to record the student’s information on the National HPV Vaccination Register and (for female students only) link to the National or State Cervical Screening Program.

Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of child, you are advised to read all the information provided, complete the consent form and return it to your child’s school.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal. The procedure for withdrawal of consent can be obtained from the school and is also available on the NSW Health website at  .

A record of vaccination will be given to your child to take home for each dose of vaccine they are given. Please keep these records in a safe place as your child will need them as a record of vaccination for future employment, travel and work experience.  It is also recommended that you inform your local doctor that the vaccines have been given so they can update their patient records.

To improve vaccine course completion, students will be offered any missed doses throughout the year at any of the scheduled clinics at school.  A letter will be sent home at the end of the year informing you if your child has not received a vaccine dose that you consented for.

Please note that free vaccination is only offered to the above Year groups. Vaccination outside these Year groups will not be offered at school and will not be free at the GP.

Welcome to all our volunteers for 2014, in particular all the new parents to the school.  Canteen provides a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents, find out what is happening at the school and provides significant contributions to the P&C to fund worthy projects which benefit all of our sons.  If you can spare a day a month to help out please contact the canteen on Ph: 9662 9350.  Your sons will love to see you there.

Cutler Foundation Volunteering

Volunteering for the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation

During the 2013/2014 Summer Break, the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation ran one of its regular holiday programs in which student volunteers from SBHS were able to accompany some volunteer chauffeurs and assist elderly citizens to and from their medical appointments. Kevin Dang and Henry Zhao from Year 11 (2014) gave up their time to lend a helping hand.

Here’s what Henry had to say about his experience:

“I've seen those distinct blue minivans parked at the front of our school and have always wondered what they were used for. During the holidays, I had an eye opening experience with the charity. The Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation provides help when no one else can. True to its motto, I had the pleasure of witnessing kindness at its best. Along with the Volunteer drivers, Kevin and I spent the day helping the elderly and disabled getting to and from their medical appointments. Many of the people we attended to expressed how grateful they were for the Foundation and the people that kept it running. The volunteer drivers worked very hard and showed genuine passion in what they were doing. Working with the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation displayed to me the importance of giving back and if you ever have the chance, I would highly recommend doing so.”

MIC of Cricket Report

I would like to personally introduce myself. My name is Mr Tesoriero and I am the new MIC of Cricket. I am delighted to take on this new, exciting and challenging role. I look forward to helping develop cricket at the school and become one of the strongest schools in the competition. Over the summer break our 1st and 2nd squad trained hard and played a couple of trial matches against our Old Boys and St Aloysius.

First Saturday back we saw High play against Riverview in the 4th Round of the GPS competition. High put up a gallant effort in all teams, but the clear difference between the two sides showed in the field. Fielding can be very underrated among teams and it is vital we change our frame of mind and start emphasising the importance of taking catches and saving those boundaries. The 16As and 15As both have players missing to the Opens and just had narrow losses. This is promising for the years to come.

Last Saturday we played against Shore in the first of a two-day match.  Shore are renowned to have good fast bowlers and this showed against our 1st XI. The boys fought hard, but have a tough battle in front of them. The 2nds bowled well and restricted Shore to just 178 giving the boys a great opportunity to take out their first win for the season. Again our 16As had a good day and also have a chance to continue their successful season.

This Saturday sees the Group I teams play their second day against Shore, while the Group II teams will be up against Riverview. Good luck to everyone and continue with the great behaviour, uniform and attitude out on the field.

To all parents and players, don’t forget to go through the points below:

• Please make sure that all the boys wear SBHS logo hats and tops.
• They are not to wear thongs to and from their fixtures.
• Make sure they drink plenty of water and carry a drink bottle with them to training and fixtures.
• Please notify their coaches if they are unable to attend training or their fixture.

Bradman Oval has been chosen for a regional screening of the new Aussie movie Backyard Ashes..

Backyard Ashes is an Australian comedy set in the Regional city of Wagga Wagga in NSW, in the backyard of a local bloke and cricket fanatic named Dougie Waters. The backyard setting forms a microcosm of Australian society, a kind of middle class suburbia. It focuses on the way that Australians are drawn to their backyards and how we see them as safe places, as a kind of watering hole where people meet and the foundations of our Australian values and ideals begin to develop.

So much of an Australian’s life is spent in their backyard and so many significant moments in their lives take place there too. Birthdays, Easter, Xmas, Australia Day, New Year’s Day and of course Boxing Day are all mostly celebrated in our backyards and are accompanied by family, friends, a BBQ and of course the obligatory game of backyard cricket. This is where our story takes place.

1st XI Report

High elected to bat first on a nippy wicket, with a flatter surface in mind, if the batsmen prevailed through a tricky first hour. Young Vivek was the first to fall, and this brought Tushaar to the crease, who joined Vishal to see High through to just before lunch. Although the run rate was low, both batsmen looked forward to an absolute run spree after lunch, before Tushaar and Shashank fell in quick succession. Jesse then was out to the son of legendary spinner Charlie Taylor, as soon as he was looking like dominating another GPS attack. Wickets then fell in quick succession to have Lasith and Vishal at the crease with the score at 8/65. Vishal nearly carried the bat, facing 153 balls in over three hours at the crease; accumulating a stoic 32. Lasith then made the most of a faltering attack blasting 37, with five boundaries. High looked to fire up, and dish out a serving of SHORE’s own medicine. However, none of the quick’s found enough rhythm early on and it was left to Vishnu and Vishal to salvage some pride with the ball. Vishnu bowled extremely well, foxing each of the batsmen he bowled to, with his accurate out-swingers. Some noise from the High boys provided them with three wickets in the last session, positive that either a miracle, or rain, will save the lads next week.

Sydney Boys High Water Polo

Congratulations to the High 1st Grade Water Polo team on their back to back wins against Barker College and St Aloysius College over the past two weeks. Our match against Barker was a tight game throughout, with some impressive defensive play from the High team, ending in a 5 – 3 victory. We consolidated this on Saturday with a convincing win over St Aloysius College  – shutting them out for a convincing 7 – 2 win.

There was impressive defensive play from the whole team throughout both matches – especially our goal keeper, Perry Sim. Well done as well to our goal scorers for the two games:

• High v Barker - Ned Anson (1), Jonathan Chew (1) and Christian Haddo (3)
• High v St Aloysius – Wesley Beare (3), Christian Haddo (2) and Jason Tjahjokusumo (2)

Our Under 14s team also posted a great win over Waverly college on Saturday, beating them 15 – 1. Outstanding goal keeping from Daniel Fan and defensive play from Joshua Ng, Nicholas Giannoulis, Telly Tselonis and Justin Dinh complemented our roving attack, with multiple goals each from Lincoln Hui, Andrew Li, Harvey Luo and Nathan Trinh.

Welcome also to our four new Year 9 players: Isaac Haddo, Henrick Michael, Dominic Leal Smith and Jake Rowlands. They will join our competitive U16s team as all three teams in the competition head towards a strong finish to the season.

Sailing: High Tide

Sailing continued this weekend with two more Fleet races and Teams Racing in the afternoon. High sailors’ Fleet results were mixed and although some sailors were more consistent, no podium positions were gained unlike last week’s outstanding results.  High performed more creditably in the Teams racing with wins over Ascham 1 and twice  against Scots 2.

In Fleet racing, with a good and building breeze, David Evans/Ethan Tay were again the most consistent crew, with fifth place in Race 1 and fourteenth place in Race 2. Angelo Yan/Edward Heaney were also well placed in the forty plus fleet with seventeenth and fourth placings in the two races. Kai Matsumoto/Max Wharton-Jones were very unlucky in the second race, when after a brilliant, pin end start and leading the fleet, had to return as a general recall was called and another start was conducted but, unfortunately not as good a start for Kai and Max.

Probably the highlight of the fleet racing was the encouraging efforts of Long Do/Alex De Araujo in their first races as skippers. Although well back, they performed impressively to overtake a number of more experienced sailors throughout the first race, including some of the more senior High sailors. These two sailors will continue to improve as the season progresses.

In the Teams Racing, under the tutelage of Bec Loder and Adam South, racing is also showing improved signs in both High Teams, with High 1 having a number of wins and closer finishes.

Welcome New Rowers

We welcome 32 Year 7 and 3 Year 9 boys to High Rowing at Abbotsford. They will be learning the skills of rowing over the next few weeks on Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Other Events this Term –

• MBHS Year 10 rowers will be visiting SBHS from Wednesday 19th to Saturday 22nd February. All MBHS and SBHS Y10 boys will camp at the rowing sheds on the Wednesday night and Melbourne boys will be billeted to Sydney families for the Thursday and Friday nights. Boys from both schools will race for the Parra Yarra Cup.
• GPS Rowing Assembly is on Wednesday 12th March
• Rowing Dinner is in the Great Hall on Saturday 15th February

Sydney Boys travelled to SHORE to keep the well-earned momentum from last year.  SHORE had just built a whole new tennis complex which was exciting to play on. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we were unable to get the win at the end of the day going down 6-3 with almost promising signs of a comeback which sadly did not play out. Stevie and Eddy played great doubles to secure a somewhat tight match. 6-4 7-5. However the first and third were unable to do so. Going into the singles we needed to win 4 to be victorious overall. New additions to the team Jack and Stevie again were the stars of the show Jack winning an exciting match in three sets and Stevie beating his opponent in a well executed 6-4 7-5. Stevie keeping his 100% singles record so far since coming to High. Eddy, Josh and I disappointingly played sub-par matches and lost. Despite the loss we take 3 points onto the GPS ladder and as always gather much needed match practice and experience onto the rest of the season.

2nd Grade
After a closely fought match in the one-off trial match against King’s, High were confident of an improvement against Shore in the third match of the GPS season. Doubles 1, Carl and James, through aggressive net play and serving comfortably won the first set 6-1, however loss of focus led to a quick 6-1 loss in the second. Focus was regained in the super tie-break resulting in a 6-1 1-6 10-5 win. Doubles 2, Aaron and Danny, faced aggressive net players however through consistent baseline plays and well timed interceptions, the pair won 4-6 6-4 10-6. Doubles 3, Richard and Bohan, faced a consistent pair, however solid net play led to a close 6-4 7-5 win. With three out of three doubles matches won, High's confidence was further boosted for the singles. Number 1, Carl, faced a baseline player with speedy defence lost the first set 6-7 and 4-7 in the tie-break. However more aggressive net play led to a 6-3 win in the second, and unfortunately, injury from the opponent resulted in a 6-7(4-7) 6-3 6-1 win. Number 2, Aaron, faced a strong server and aggressive net play and inability to keep up led to a 2-6 0-6 loss. Number 3, Richard, broke the opponent's confidence with his aggressive baseline play winning 6-4 6-1. Number 4, James, also broke the opponent's confidence through consistent baseline play winning the match 6-3 6-1. Number 5, Danny, through consistent and deep baseline play comfortably won 6-3 6-1. Number 6, Bohan, played a competitive match against a consistent player unfortunately unable to finish with a result of 6-4 3-6 4-3. With the convincing score line of 7.5 matches to 1.5, High is confident in doing well against the remaining 4 GPS matches.

3rd Grade
For the second week of the AAGPS season, 3rd Grade Tennis played Shore at Shore, in an attempt to improve on last weeks result against King’s. With new additions to this year's squad, the team looked to build a solid foundation of doubles combinations that would be possible to keep throughout the season. Fortunately, we managed to walk away with one doubles win from the 3 and 4 seed, which saw them come back from being 4-1 down. Despite this amazing result, the team, as a whole, could not produce an outcome similar to the doubles win, with only one of the four singles being won (6-0). We will be looking forward to improving on this result in the coming weeks.

Junior Results

16 As
Going into the second round of the 2014 split against SHORE, the 16s were eager to show their worth. The A1/A2 doubles featured Ervin Zhou and Anthony Yu respectively. After an intense, drawn-out  game, the pair just fell short of the opponent, resulting in a tiebreak loss 5-6(3). The A3/A4 doubles, consisting of Preetham Kadappu at A3 and Thomas Nguyen at A4, also lost, 4-6. In the singles, Ervin led a dominating performance on court, leading to a 6-4 victory. Anthony was less fortunate, and came out with close 4-6 loss. After an injury concerning his shoulder, Preetham decided to play A4, resulting in Alex Liang switching roles with him and playing A3. Unfortunately, the opponent overpowered him and Alex lost 2-6. Preetham, playing against the SHORE A4, won in 10 games, 6-4. Overall, we were disappointed with our performance this week. The team will mainly focus on their mentality and fitness on and off the court to avoid any unnecessary losses.

Welcome back from the holidays!  ln the previous Saturday, SBHS tennis challenged Shore. It was a long day and we didn't get to finish some of our matches. For A1 and A2 doubles we lost in a super tiebreak score of 10-4. In A1 singles we lost 6-3 and in A2 singles we won 6-5. For A3 and A4 doubles we also lost 6-3. A3 singles lost in a close match of 6-4 whilst A4 did not get to complete his match. Overall it was close and we lost only by a few games due to the lack of time. Good luck next week!

This week High posted fantastic wins Shore and showed great improvement from last year’s results, with the Opens having only lost one game, with 3rd Grade particularly noticeable drawing in a double overtime, an improvement from last year’s loss. 1st Grade won by a massive 64 point margin, a completely dominating performance that managed to have High 1st Grade undefeated in the official season. High 2nd Grade also posted an impressive performance, with high scorer Charlie Shi recording 16 points raining down shots both on the perimeter and mid-range. This effort managed to push High 2nd Grade to their 3rd consecutive win in the AAGPS season, rendering them also at the top of the ladder undefeated. It is worth noting that High 1st Grade posted the best defensive record so far, as well as High 2nd Grade recording 2nd best defensive record, having only 110 points scored against the team in 3 games.

Next week we have games against Riverview. I’ve also noticed a very valiant effort from the 13s age group. Although all posting losses, 13As managed to lose with only a 12 point deficit, which was much better than when I was in Year 7. Keep it up Year 7s!
