High Talent
Fairland Pavilion Refurbishment Opening Sydney High boys have played on McKay for 82 years. We really value our relationship with the Parklands. I trust that a large crowd of students, parents, Old Boys and well-wishers will join us on Saturday the 6th for the official opening of the building, refurbished by the Sydney High School Foundation at a cost of > $100k. The ceremony is due to commence at 1430, followed by afternoon tea and the 1st XV rugby match at 1515. For us to demonstrate the strength of our relationship with the Park we need your support. It is not about whether you play rugby, cricket or football but about your connection with High, its programs and long association with Centennial Parklands. I look forward to seeing the High Community out in force to make this landmark day a success.

SBHS DebtatingMIC Debating ReportCongratulations to our Year 12 PDC team Lokesh Sharma, Jonathan Freiberg, Riley Irwin for winning the Hume Barbour trophy against NSGHS last Friday. Those of us who went to see the debate were given a wonderful opportunity to watch "That we should introduce a medicare co-payment on doctors visits" in the palatial surroundings of the Great Hall at Sydney University. It's great to think we have the beautiful Raynor Hof trophy for one more year. On Friday we did well against Newington at Junior level with only one loss, but unfortunately neither our Firsts or Seconds won this week. Our 7A and 9A and 10 A teams remain undefeated in GPS. I am now starting to look at Debating Award Points. There will be one point per debate in Eastside and FED either as a debater or as a Chair Person. Boys who have competed in any of the other competitions this year will also receive award points. GPS debaters will be given a point for each debate as will PDC debaters. In addition students who have attended coaching throughout the year will receive award points. We award 10 points for Juniors and 15 points for Seniors. I will be making my judgment about who receives these points when I review the rolls at the end of the season. This week is our last home debate of the season. I look forward to seeing lots of parents there.

Jeans for Genes Day ReportThe day began really early, with the usual hectic chaos, as we prepared for the peak hour, with bleary eyes, led by Ganesh and Shreyas. Sydney Boys High School had volunteered to raise money for Jeans for Genes day on the 1st of August, following a strong tradition developed by the school's Community Service Committee. "Jeans for Genes Day is a national day when people wear their jeans to raise much-needed funds for research into birth defects and diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, and a range of genetic disorders." (Please show your support and visit the Jeans for Genes day website for more information on the valuable cause the money raised by our school funded - ). On the day we set up our stand at Central with volunteers partnering up and covering every exit from Central. Chances are if you were at Central before 9:00 am you would have seen our students actively supporting the cause. It was an exciting day with competition high between our volunteers, each trying to raise more money than the others. Congratulations to Justin and Anthony who according to our estimations raised the most money.
I hope you will join me in congratulating our smooth and talented volunteers on giving up time
from their own morning to support our community. We had over 60 senior students all of whom
worked tirelessly, representing our school and youth commitment. However, the morning was also
quite an enjoyable day in the fresh air of the early morning, greeting kind travellers who
donated generously. To any senior students considering early morning collections, I highly
recommend you do so, because not only is it a fun morning but you would be making an active
change in your community. A feat that our volunteers for Jeans for Genes day achieved remarkably,
and I would like to personally thank them for their help.

An SRC InitiativeTrivia NightTrivia Night is going to be held on the 28th of August, Week 7 from 6pm-9pm in the Great Hall. It is a question night like trivial pursuit but you get to be in tables with participants from Sydney Girls High and Sydney Boys High answering questions. Tickets cost $15 and will cover dinner, drinks and snacks for the night. Tables consist of 10 people with participants from both the girls and boys schools. There will be prizes. Get your tables ready because there is limited seating. Get your money in by Monday the 25th August. School Council Meeting ReportSRC members attended the School Council meeting. Currently, the SRC are concerned about the following areas which were discussed at the meeting; clocks in the school, in which the SRC intend on resolving by either replacing, obtaining or fixing clocks, the proposed Clubs Proposal which is still under negotiation with Dr Jaggar, Fairland Pavilion Reopening and the Grammar vs High Rugby Game and finally the issue of laying bitumen at the bus lines, hopefully in 2015.

Volleyball NotesCome and support our final match for the season…. On the 23rd August Sydney High will host Grammar in our last match for the season. If Sydney High wins we will be the 2014 GPS Volleyball Champions. Your support at this match could help give our boys that winning edge so come along and be prepared for a great end to the volleyball season. The 1st grade match starts at 11.30 am. In addition we are also hosting an Old Boys match - High v Grammar to celebrate 20 years of Volleyball at High. The Old Boys from both schools are preparing themselves for a competitive meeting that will undoubtedly provide great entertainment for those watching. The Old Boys game starts at 10.00am. 15 As Coach Calum then gave us a few wise words of encouragement, such as 'be as loud as possible' and to not fuss over our mistakes. The loud noise of encouragement we made started to demoralize the opposition, and led to a win for us 21-17. Even though David wasn't used to playing with us, he tried his best, and even saved us a few points.
In the third set, John Mok was a key contributor to getting the team points, smashing 7 serves in
a row. This raised our confidence even more, and in the end, we smashed the opposition 21-10 with
one last, strong spike from Oscar Wu. We weren't upset about our first set, and this tells us
there is more room for improvement. Keep up the good work and train hard, boys! Go HIGH!

SBHS FootballFootball Results – 2014 Term 3 Week 4
MIC of Football ReportNewington is regarded as the leading soccer school in the GPS competition. So we knew we had a tough task ahead of us. When running a sporting program the most important thing you want to gain out of the season is making sure the boys have improved and developed their skills. Although we may have lost the majority of the matches, if we look back at our results against Newington during the trial period we had a deficit average of around 7 goals to last weekend whereby we averaged a deficit of around 3 goals. This is a remarkable improvement that has been the result of the boys training hard and enjoying their time. Although going down 0-3 the 1st XI came away with a lot of encouragement. In the first minute of the match we had a chance to score, missing a golden opportunity to take an early lead. This sent a message to our top of the table opponents that we were here to seriously challenge them. The boys continued to fight hard, but a couple of lapses in defence gave them a 2-0 lead at half time. Our boys have continued the attitude to never give up and came into the second half still believing we could do this. We applied a lot of pressure causing a stir within the Newington camp. They were getting very frustrated resulting in them getting a few yellow cards. We knew we were on top, but what is now becoming more evident is the loss of our striker, Jesse Cooper, who regularly found the back of the net. We just couldn’t convert our chances and then towards the end of the match we conceded another goal securing the win for Newington. The 2nd XI also had their chances, but when you concede an early goal you are always chasing your tail. With the final minute of the game looming all players went on the attack allowing Newington to counter attack and win the game 2-0. Eddy Wang scored a spectacular goal for the 3rd XI from 20 yards out, while Jun Park showed true commitment and enthusiasm running on for the 4th XI, 3rd XI and also getting a good stint for the 2nd XI. This is credit to his hard work and determination on and off the field. Many of our top age group teams were victims of tough defeats, but it is good to see we have depth with the majority of matches being very close. It is important we continue to develop all teams to keep challenging our top tier players. Our team of the week goes to the 10th XI with their strong win with Michael Hughes scoring a hat-trick. On Saturday we play our fourth round match away against Riverview who are also equal top of the ladder with Newington. A win this weekend will place us right back into contention for the premiership. So our boys are primed and ready to go. I have created a Twitter account for regular updates in results, information and wet weather. This does not replace the school wet weather website. SHS Rowing Committee AGMANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Date: Wednesday 20 August 2014 Come and find out about new developments for the upcoming season. Rowing is a great sport that High provides for your boys. It also relies on parents to help facilitate the program. Every year we need new parents to become involved. All Office Bearer positions will be declared vacant and available for nomination and election. All parents of rowing students are invited to attend the meeting.

High vs KingsWell done to all teams last weekend. We were again too strong in the 13s, well matched in the 14s, very competitive in the 15s and 16s and impressive in the Opens. After trailling by 8 in the first half, SHS 1st XV showed their fighting spirit to come back and win 19-8 against Kings 3rd XV.

Congratulations also go to Bennette Jiang who made the CHS development squad for 2015. Armidale TripA reminder to all Rugby players to pay for the Armidale trip ASAP.
