High Talent
At the Schools Teams National Fencing Competition our sabre team - Yiu Tao Wong (12), Chi Mao and Marshall Wang (11) and Garry Huang (10) won gold! Our Epée A team – Jay Jo (12), Ronald Chan and David Huang (11) and John Tian (9) gained a silver medal. Congratulations to all concerned! Our Year 11 PDC debating team - Ganeshmoorthy Chandrasekaran, Thomas George, Nicholas Phillis and Gautham Shankar - were defeated in the Regional Final by SGHS. Well done on your season so far, boys! Congratulations to Joshua Tran and Nader Haidar (11) who have been accepted into the Salvos Ambassador Movement program. James Lin (12) is currently serving as a Salvos Ambassador. Well done on your social justice engagement boys!

Important events this week
August 4 marked 100 years since the outbreak of World War 1. For the next four years there will be commemorative events staged around the world to highlight particular momentous events that defined that horrific period in world history. On August 9 we celebrate the United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. We have 500,000 indigenous people in Australia and we are yet to have a formal settlement of our relationship with them.  This week we are asked to consider the contribution made to our society by our indigenous peoples and to acknowledge and respect their achievements. Let’s hope we can move from having inclusive aspirations towards engaging in a genuine process of reconciliation ratified by a formal treaty to give closure for our indigenous people to the aftermath of the Anglo invasion of 1788.

Collecting Sick Students
Many students present to ‘sick bay’ with a variety of ailments. A School First Aid Officer makes an assessment of their condition. Many injuries are treated on the spot and the cases managed between the school and parents. If the presented symptoms are serious, an ambulance is called and parents are notified of the School’s action and where the student has been taken. If the student just needs a short time to rest, the ‘sick bay’ is made available. In the case of sprains and minor injuries, parents are notified and arrangements are made for students to wait until the end of the day or make their way home straight away, if the parents and the School agree and there is someone at home to care for them. There are cases where the student is clearly ill but is not serious enough to be hospitalised, and parents are contacted and asked to come and pick up their son. Usually, parents find a way to pick up their sons within an hour of being notified. Parents are reminded that the School has no resources to devote to caring for sick students at school if they need constant supervision. The School reserves the right to call an ambulance and have a sick student taken away if parents do not agree to attempt to pick up the sick student within an hour after notification.

Winter Sport Co-payments
All winter sports depend on prompt payment of invoiced co-payments to pay coaches. Parents are reminded that all programs have to meet their budgetary obligations and cannot do so without maximum support from everyone. Our sports are delivered at a fraction of their actual cost, being subsidised by parking revenues and ASF donations, along with the structural support and supervision provided by the school with assistance from the sports levy.  Please settle up your son’s winter sports co-payment now.

Enrolment applications 8-12 for 2015
Applications for enrolment into Years 8, 9 & 11 have now been assessed and spreadsheets of scores produced. We are not accepting applications for Years 10 or 12, following last year’s practice. For Year 8 there were 47 applicants, Year 9 132 and Year 11, 46. I want to thank our nineteen assessors for their efforts in reading assessing, recording and returning their boxes of applications. The process has worked very smoothly this year. The next phase is interviews followed by final ranking and letters of offers.

SBHS Debating

Debating MIC’s report

By the time most of you read this we will know the outcome of the Hume Barbour final. The Year 12s have done really well to get this far and I am very proud to have a team in the final for a third year in a row.  I am looking forward to a high quality debate against North Sydney Girls in the wonderful surroundings of the Great Hall at Sydney University and will be joined a SBHS audience of 30.

Year 11s PDC run came to an end this week with a very close debate against Sydney Girls in the Regional Finals. I have been really pleased to see Ganeshmoorthy, Nick, Thomas and Gautham grow in confidence this year. A huge thank you to their coach, Christopher Chiam, who has worked hard to help them develop individually as debaters and together as a team.

Year 7 and 8 both won their debates against Randwick Girls and now have to debate each other to see who wins the zone. Ms Rigby says both teams are formidable so it will be a great debate to watch.

Last week at St Josephs we won most of the GPS  debates and in particular it was great to see victory for the Firsts, Seconds and all of the A teams.

The debating dinner is on 6th September and is open to everyone. It is certainly not just for GPS debaters. All of you are welcome at the dinner and will really enjoy the celebratory nature of the evening, but in particular the Coaches Debate which is always good fun.

On Monday I went to the Inner West Rotary Club meeting with Andrew McNaughton and Thomas Nguyen where they did a presentation to thank the club for sponsoring our school for the MUNA competition.  The Rotarians were extremely impressed with our performance and very complimentary about the debating program at High.

Jeans for Genes Day

BBQ-Mufti Day

On the 29th of July 2014, Sydney Boys High School raised money and awareness for research into birth defects and genetic diseases through a BBQ-Mufti day, amassing a total of $2214.60 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. A gloomy day threatened the prospects of a successful event; however the volunteers pushed on, setting up all the stations expecting the army that was to surround them in a mere hour.  Many stayed to help throughout lunch time to cater for the swarm who were enticed by the smell of onions and sausages cooking away on the barbeques. With lines stretching back as far as the canteen, the lunch time proved to be strenuous yet rewarding with hundreds of satisfied students and teachers walking away with a warm lunch on a downcast day. A big thank you must be given to all involved; especially the mufti collectors, CSC members, BBQ volunteers and non-scheduled students who helped out at recess and lunch time. A special mention must go out to Alex Hossain (11E), Leonard Mah (11R) and Mr.Phillipson who all played key roles in monitoring and organising the success of this event.

Ethics, Teamwork, Creativity Day

On Wednesday 30th July, students from St George Girls, Sydney Girls and Sydney Tech joined Hugh Bartley, Jaspar McCahon-Boesma, Louis Saunders, Matthew Whittacker, Wesley Yu, Ahad-Anhiang  Zafar, Corey Won and Kurt Wang in a day of collaborative learning.

32 students were put into four groups, with two students from each school in each group. Each group tackled the ethical problem “What is if we are able to help and decide to do nothing?” either through creative writing, art/drawing, conducting a philosophical investigation or by composing a piece of music. The tasks were devised and facilitated by Dr Andrew Crosbie.

The students participated in some team building activities before embarking on their creative solutions which were presented after lunch. We were all ‘blown away’ by what they came up with! Each presentation was outstanding- thoughtful, perceptive and articulate. It was wonderful to feel the buzz in the hall throughout the day.

Year nine film students- Aaron Matthew,Tushaya Mehndiratta, Thomas Nguyen and Kevin Zhang are in the process of editing the visual record of the day’s events. We are all looking forward to reliving it through the DVD they are making for us.

Special thanks to Ms Sarah Kim who facilitated the music group, Ms Paris Munro who facilitated both the art group and the film crew, to the teachers from the other schools (Mr Devlin, Ms Oyston and Ms Maxwell) who saw the potential in our invitation to join us in some ‘collaborative’ team work and especially to Mr Con Barris, our fantastic Deputy, whose enthusiasm for the day enabled it to happen. A big thank you to Dr Jaggar for taking the time in a typically busy day to welcome our visitors and to view the finished products. Yes, he was impressed! Also, thankyou to Karen and Tracey and the canteen crew for providing us with lunch. Just goes to show what teamwork can achieve.

The junior teams were very strong against Joeys, with the 13s gaining a clean sweep. The 14As showed a huge improvement on last year’s performances with their speed proving too much for the opposition. Unfortunately 1sts lost in the final two minutes of play after leading for most of the game.

Volleyball Notes

GPS Volleyball  Results

On the 19th July Sydney High 1sts played Sydney Grammar at Grammar. After a hard fought match Sydney High walked away victorious in straight sets 25-11, 25-19, 25-23.  Man of the match went to Byron Chen for his skilful play on the day.  However, a special thanks must go to Grammar for a great match. On the 26th July  Sydney High 1sts played Ignatius at Ignatius. Improving greatly due to a better volleyball structure, Ignatius pushed High to play better volleyball. However this was not enough to deny High an easy straight sets victory 25-12, 25-15, 25-20.

Second Grade Report
2nd Grade played against Newington College. Good passing and the use of communication allowed High to set up well-structured attacks through their defence creating an early lead of 25-15. High’s consistent serving troubled Newington throughout the second set combined with strong positional attacks allowed High to gain an early lead. However, Newington came back with a strong serving streak. In the end, High's strong defence was able to overpower their efforts, winning the set 25-17. In the third set, High was able to use inventive plays to outplay Newington's blockers and secured a 25-12 game winning set.

Old Boy at the World Junior Athletics Championships

Old Boy (Class of 2013) Ivor Metcalf made it all the way to the semi-finals at the World Junior Athletics Championships. Running a Personal Best (PB) of 13.74 in his heat he represented the country and himself well and the school is very proud of him. BHS Athletic staff and team definitely miss his sensational talents representing the school so well, in not only hurdles but high jump, long jump, 100m and 4x100 relays. We are all so happy he is doing well and wish him nothing but the best with his training and competitions in the future.

MIC Football Report

The after effect we had from our first round against King’s was very costly with many of our players injured, sore and exhausted causing major disruptions in our training camp. But come Saturday our Captain, Michael Cui, who couldn’t train all week due to injury and was in serious doubt for Saturday, turned up on match day and made himself available. This gave a very necessary lift to the boys to spur them on for the day and lift for the occasion against a very physical St Joseph’s College. Our 4th XI came away with a 1-0 win thanks to our 5th XI specialist substitute Varunan Murugananthan. The 3rd XI had chances, but Joey’s defended well finishing in a draw at 0-0. The 2nd XI scored early and played an attractive, attacking style game. Unfortunately they conceded a late goal with the match ending 1-1. Our 1st XI for the first 20 minutes looked out of shape and was panicking when they had the ball. They conceded a goal, but this actually settled the boys down and they played with a lot more structure and discipline fighting back to go into the break 1-1. The second half was very even, but unfortunately they lost concentration and conceded an easy team goal. I have mentioned this in previous reports, and this was shown again, was the team’s determination to not give in. They scored to make the match 2-2 and for the remaining 10 minutes we finished on top, but just couldn’t quite find that winning goal. We were extremely happy with the result and with Newington and Riverview coming away with a draw we remain equal leaders. This Saturday we come up against Newington who beat us 6-1 in the trial match. So we are eager to make amends and show the other schools that we deserve to remain on top of the ladder.

Eatrend Wang a couple of weeks ago miraculously scored 10 goals in one match. Well believe it or not, he has managed to outdo himself by scoring 11 goals. This is an amazing feat – well done, Eatrend.  In our Open’s age group we had four wins, one loss and four draws. Although the results may not be the same in the lower age groups it does show that with great attitude and great working ethics in training we will be rewarded with positive results.

Overall the day was with mixed results. Nine wins, 12 losses and eight draws is an improvement from last week and hopefully something for us to build on.

This Saturday is our third round of the GPS Season against the competition favourites, Newington.  This is a top of the ladder clash so it would be great to have as many people to stick around and watch the boys take it to Newington.

I have created a Twitter account for regular updates in results, information and wet weather. This does not replace the school wet weather website. The link can be accessed by phone or web browser without signing in or having a twitter account.

Please note all boys must:

• turn up at least 45 minutes before the start of their match.
• turn up in SBHS football uniform and if they wish to wear a track suit this must also be SBHS track suit.
• make sure they drink plenty of water and carry a drink bottle with them to training and fixtures.
• MUST notify your coach well in advance If you are unavailable to play you. Just doing it online does not suffice.

Keep up the good effort and I am sure SBHS Football will continue to have a successful season.

Daffodil Day

Student Collection Permission Note

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Cancer Council NSW is seeking help from Sydney Boys High School students on Daffodil Day, Friday 22 August, 6:15am – 8.55am at Central Station.

Your son has volunteered to participate in the Daffodil Day collection as a part of the SBHS group. All registered volunteers are covered by public liability insurance when requesting donations for fresh flowers and Daffodil Day merchandise. At school prior to Daffodil Day, students involved will receive their ID sticker, which provides their authorisation to collect money on behalf of Cancer Council NSW.

It is expected that students involved will:

• Arrive on time at 6:15am, impeccably presented in their uniform (including jacket or jumper)
• Address all members of the public clearly and politely
• Return all donations and unsold merchandise to the Cancer Council NSW Site Supervisor
• Remain with their designated collection partner at all times, until returning to school before 9.25am

Attached is a school permission note for your signature. It is important that your son return the signed permission slip by Thursday 14 August - either via email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or to the box outside Mr Phillipson’s door.  Due to a limited number of places, permission slips returned after 14 August may not accepted.

DOs:

1. Wear your complete school uniform (clean and wrinkle-free), including jacket or jumper.  Sorry, no Y12 jerseys
2. Bring water bottle, sunscreen/sunglasses/hat, comfy shoes, wet weather gear (if necessary)
3. Upon arrival at Central Station (by 6.15am) sign-in with the student coordinator
4. Read the sheet you will receive from the Site Supervisor, describing this year’s merchandise
5. Assist Site Supervisor with set-up
6. Keep your site safe and tidy for all
7. Clean up spills immediately
8. Lift correctly:
   Back straight.
   Ask for help if too heavy-keep abdominals tight,
   Close to the load,
   Knees bent
9. Always open boxes by cutting away from your body
10. ALWAYS stay with your collection partner
11. At least once per hour, contact your Site Supervisor and/or Teacher
12. Give the Cancer Council NSW Helpline number to anyone wanting advice – 13 11 20
13. Stay hydrated and Slip-Slop-Slap-Seek Shade-Slide on Sunglasses

Trivia night

Trivia night is going to be held on the 28th of August, Week 7 from 6pm-9pm in the Great hall after school. It is a question night like trivial pursuit but you get to be in tables with participants from Sydney Girls High and Sydney Boys High answering questions. Tickets cost $15 and will cover dinner, drinks and snack for the night. Tables consist of 10 people with participants from both the girls and boys girls, there will be CASH PRIZES!! Get your tables ready because there is limited seating.
