Staff Changes for Term 3
Tibby Cotter Bridge and Light Rail Project - update The construction compound for the Tibby Cotter Bridge across Anzac Parade has been completed and work is commencing on the footings. Cranes have been brought onto the site and the pace of works is due to increase very soon.

NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2014 STAFF READING OVER THE HOLIDAYS – Great to hear about this from them. Love to hear from any other members of staff who enjoyed a holiday read. Three members of staff told me that they enjoyed their holiday reading. Mr Kay read The Hunger Games, Mrs Eggleton read Riders to the Midnight Sun which was about cycling through Russia and Mrs O Driscoll read and loved Carl Ruiz Zaffron’s Shadow of the Wind. I read David Wingrove’s Daylight on Iron Mountain, Mal Peet’s Exposure, Mark Mulholland’s A Mad and Wonderful Thing and Noel Beddoe’s On Cringila Hill and pushed myself to read Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam the final book in the Oryx and Crake Trilogy. As the final book in the Margaret Atwood trilogy won the Booker Prize and as I finally came to terms with Margaret Atwood’s strange Sci Fi Dystopia I thought I might review it for High Notes.
NEW RESOURCES THIS WEEK
An SRC InitiativeThe water filter is finally here and is located behind the great hall kitchen next to the bubblers. This means that there is no reason to sneak into the teacher’s common room to steal their cold water as we have our own water cooler filter. The SRC have fully funded this project from money raised and in future will continue to do so. Talent QuestThe Talent Quest is this Monday at lunch time. The tickets are $3 if bought beforehand and $3.50 at the door and can be bought from SRC members during the week. Auditions have been conducted for the week and the final audition is Friday lunchtime. Every type of act is encouraged. Trivia NightThe annual Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Girls High School Trivia Night will be held within a few weeks’ time. The night is consists of dinner, snacks and drinks whilst answering some fun questions. Tickets are $15 and there will be great prizes! Tables will consist of 10 people and need to be confirmed before purchasing tickets. New IdeasThe SRC is constantly looking for new ideas to help improve and fix your school. There has currently been a lot of discussion of a new event in the SRC. Current ideas being discussed have been a magic show, ramen day, multicultural day etc. Your ideas can be implemented so please leave your suggestions on the SRC Facebook page and SRC forum. SBHS DebatingDebating MIC ReportWelcome back to everyone for the GPS season and continued PDC seasons. In preparation for the GPS season all GPS debaters should be keeping up to date with current affairs and specifically thinking about and researching the topic areas below.

YEAR 12 MUSIC FESTIVAL
Students from all over the state have competed for 74 performance places by video selection.
Brendan Hancox (Music Extension, Drums, Year 12) & Riley Irwin (Music Extension, Piano, Year
12) will be performing this Sunday at Sydney Grammar (1:30pm & 3:30pm session). Adjudication
for live performances will be provided by Mrs Karen Carey, Dr Nicholas Vines and Mr Barry
Walmsley.

6.25am-9.00am. SBHS students will be paired to raise money for the CMRI, under the

High Tennis MeetingTuesday, 22 July, 2014 Any parents who would like to attend the High Pre-season Tennis meeting would be more than welcome. This is a great opportunity to find out about your son’s tennis program and be involved in making plans for the year ahead. Topics will include revision of tennis fees for 2014/15, pre-season training, fundraising activities for the year ahead.
The meeting will take place at 6.30 pm in the Staff Common Room .
SBHS FootballFootball Results – 2014 Term 2 Week 9 and Holidays
MIC of Football ReportIn our final week of Term 2 our 1st XI had two matches. The first match was a friendly against St Andrews. St Andrews got off to a strong start scoring two early goals. One of the things we have been working on over the trial period is to keep our heads up and play for the full duration of the match. With this improved attitude we came back and scored two goals just before half time to square it up. In the second half both teams created many chances and were able to convert only on one occasion. Full time, 3-3, which was a fair indication of the match and a great hit-out leading into our CHS knock-out fixture. On Friday our 1st XI squad caught the early bus and drove up to Newcastle to play in the final 16 of the CHS knock-out Tournament against Callaghan College. The boys were excited and eager to get on the field and play the match. We arrived early to allow the boys to settle in and thanks to our Italian chef, Vince, who cooked up a pasta feast for all the boys, helped us load up on carbs for the day. Our boys controlled the match early, but Callaghan’s 110kg striker was an imposing force on our players and allowed him some open space to score through the middle to take the lead at half time 1-0. Our boys got off to a sluggish start conceding an early goal. Our boys then decided to lift their tempo and replied back with a well-deserved goal. Unfortunately we had a lapse in concentration and turned over the ball to allow Callaghan College to score again and extend their lead, 3-1. With about 10min remaining we managed to score and give ourselves a chance to equalise and extend the match. We pushed forward and with seconds remaining we were awarded a free kick just metres outside the penalty box. Goal Keeper, John Seroukas, came off his line and entered the penalty box. Adil crossed the ball in and to no avail we were unable to convert losing the match 3-2. Although we were very upset with the loss, we still came away extremely happy with our overall performance. It is the furthest SBHS has advanced in the CHS knockout and we are all very proud of the boys and coaching staff. Over the Holiday break we held a very successful football camp to all players. Thank you to all our boys for turning up and the coaches for making it fun, enjoyable and beneficial for our football program. Next year we hope to build on this to help continue the development of all our players. The best part of the Football World Cup was the fact the final two weeks of the tournament were held during our school holidays. I am sure the boys have had many disrupted sleeps getting up in the early hours of the morning, but it was an excited tournament and congratulations to Germany on winning the World Cup. This Saturday is our final trial match against Scots College before the commencement of the GPS Season. Our boys have had a well-deserved break and we are now primed for have a strong term and get some positive results. Good luck to all teams and I will see you around the grounds.
