From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9662 9300 and dial “1” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. If your son has early leave due to a medical appointment you are required to produce a note from the provider the following day.
News From LatinNATIONAL LATIN EXAM
Each year, students from Years 9 to 12 participate in the National Latin Exam, an international competition organised by The University of Mary Washington in Virginia, U.S.A. Over 100 countries participate and awards are sent from the University to all students. Students are assessed on their knowledge of Latin grammar and syntax and culture at the appropriate Year level. This year, the students sat the exam on March 13th and the Gold and Silver medallists for 2014 are as follows:

SILVER MEDAL: Christopher Chen of Year 12 also received a special award, The Maureen O’Donnell Award, for having achieved a Gold Medal each year since Year 9 LATIN AND GREEK READING COMPETITIONThis year, the students of Year 10 and Year 11 Latin and Year 10 Greek attended the University of Sydney on 6th June where they presented a piece of Latin poetry or prose to a number of judges. Judges assessed the students according to accuracy of pronunciation and quality of presentation. Year 10 Latin had to prepare a piece from Virgil’s Aeneid and Year 11 an extract from the Satires of Horace. Year 10 Greek had to prepare a piece of Greek rhetoric from Xenophon, Hellenica. In the Year 10 Latin division, 6 students were selected for the Final in July, and a Sydney Boys High student, Thomas Nimac, was selected. Congratulations, Thomas. In addition, a number of High students impressed the judges with their presentations and achieved Certificates as follows:

COMMENDED: YEAR 12 HSC LATIN STUDY DAYOn Tuesday, 17th June, Year 12 Latin attended the Latin Study Day, an annual event which aims to assist students in their preparation for the Latin Continuers and Extension HSC examinations. The lectures focus on the Literature texts being studied for the exam, as well as looking at Unseen Translation technique. This year, twenty-five schools participated, including Sydney Girls High, Canberra Grammar School and Pymble Ladies College. This year, the venue was Shore School, North Sydney. The day consisted of a series of lectures presented by prominent Academics from the University of Sydney, as well as graduates of such institutions as Oxford University. Dr Kathryn Welch, from the Ancient History Department, Sydney University, spoke on Livy Book V; Dr Robert Cowan from the University of Sydney Classics department spoke on Virgil, Aeneid XII and Latin Love Elegy (Extension).

What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library?June 27th, 2014 As the school holidays are imminent the Senior Library has made an effort to finishing processing many of its latest titles so that they are ready for borrowing over the break. This week we are encouraging students to take home up to ten books to read. Also, recently students have been reviewing titles for SpineOut magazine (see SBHS online databases in Library Enquiry), and we have reproduced one on the science fiction title, “Ender’s Game” – Orson Scott Card, by Jens Waring in Year 12.
Jens, 17, Sydney Boys High School, Sydney, NSW As a book which has been made into a movie, Ender’s Game has obviously received a lot of attention. However, the book is just that bit deeper and more intriguing than the movie. Ideas such as the Fantasy Game and Ender’s battle-room skirmishes are just that much deeper, and the reader’s access to Ender’s thoughts draws them into his conflict. The book is about a human military attempting to train a boy as a commander for their forces, although on a personal level it is about success and failure, leading others and fighting a situation which you yourself do not understand. For any fan of science fiction it is a unique read, and for others it is an excellent starting novel in the genre. Rating: Epic, good for book clubs Encyclopaedia Britannica Online

again through Library Enquiry on the school website. Students can utilise this great resource to
do their research for class assignments or for general information from a consistently
authoritative source, unlike Wikipedia, from school or home. The teacher librarians encourage
students to make use of this when they need to.
Football Results2014 Term 2 Week 8
MIC of Football ReportLast Saturday there were no official fixtures, but we organised a friendly match against Riverview’s 1st and 2nd XI. Since it’s private school holidays, Riverview were in camp at the Sydney Academy of Sports in Narrabeen. So our boys made a great effort to turn up and play. Our 2nd XI had a tough game missing several of their normal players. Although the score line may say 5-0 to Riverview Ronnie Uchitel, our goal keeper, made many incredible saves being our man of the match. Our 1st XI also had many players missing with just five of their regular players. This was a much more even contest and our boys played very well applying a lot of pressure and being solid in defence with Jesse Cooper playing out of position at centre back. Jet Gill Lee hit the cross bar that would have brought us back into the game. I would like to thank all the SHS parents for bringing their sons along to the game and the Riverview parents for supplying us with a great afternoon tea. Last week we had the pleasure of hosting Melbourne High in two football fixtures. The first game was not one of our best performances and we were behind 2-0 with about 20 minutes remaining. One of Melbourne’s players scored a great goal shooting from 40 metres out and hitting the top corner. Our boys decided to turn the tempo up and eventually managed to score two goals to finish on a draw 2-2. The second match was a much better effort from our boys. Although we conceded an early goal we knew we were in control and just had to capitalise on our chances. Finally we got that first goal and then this allowed us to open up the game and score five more goals. Congratulations to Adilmorad Nadir and Ryan McNamara who were named man of the series for Sydney High and Melbourne High. Also during last week we had Jesse Cooper and Michael Cui (captain) away on representative duties for GPS 2nd XI in Football. On Tuesday the boys played extremely well against CAS and won 5-2 and then on Wednesday they also beat ISA 2-0 with Michael Cui being solid in defence. Well done to these boys in a successful week. Over the holidays we will be conducting a Football training camp open to all players. Please see the attached letter for further details. Cricket ReportSBHS Representative As I am sure many of you have heard about an Australian Cricketer, Sam Robson, being selected to represent England (yes another non English player) in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka. Sam attended SBHS for one year back in 2005 and played for the 1st XI. His role as a young Year 10 student within the side was an all-rounder. Most notable performances for the season were:

In just his second Test Sam Robson, also the son of one of our staff members (Ros Robson),
knocked up his debut century scoring 127. Congratulations to Sam and his family.
Fencing UpdateCongratulations to John Tian who, on Saturday 14th June, won the gold medal in the individual epee championships, held in Brisbane.
Community Service: Jeans for Genes Permission Note25 June 2014 Dear Parent/Caregiver, The Children’s Medical Research Institute is seeking help from Sydney Boys High School senior students to fundraise in Sydney’s CBD on Jeans for Genes Day, Friday 1 August, from 6.25am-9.00am. SBHS students will be paired to raise money for the CMRI, under the direction of their adult Site Coordinator. Participants must read the ‘Jeans for Genes Day Permission Note Page 2’ (see R-drive) in advance and bring it to their check-in location. Students should arrive on time and be well presented in (clean and pressed) school uniform. However, instead of grey uniform pants they should wear their favourite blue denim jeans. Please note: Volunteering students will be permitted to wear blue jeans to class on 1 August. Attached is a permission note, which needs to be signed and returned by 3pm Tuesday 22 July - either via email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it State of Origin - a distant second?Despite the biggest television audience of the year for last week’s State of Origin match, a large crowd of parents and students attended the SBHS-SGHS Joint P&C meeting and enjoyed a dynamic presentation from Dr Karl Kruszelnicki on “a life in the sciences”. The presentation mixed the humorous with the profound and the numerous questions after the presentation highlighted the deep interest in the subject matter. The SBHS P&C would like to thank Dr Karl for his generosity, which included staying on well after the end of the presentation for photos with parents and students. The attendance and support of the Principals of the two schools, Ms. June Vickers (relieving) and Dr Jaggar was much appreciated. Thank you to the many members of the SGHS P&C Executive who supported the event. To Glynis Bartley and the wonderful parents and students who contributed to the success of the evening- helping with setup, cooking, serving, cleaning and packing up - we are in your debt as always.
