From the Principal

Assessment and Reporting
Years 10 and 11 sat assessment examinations this week. Year 12 reports were collated on Friday. Year 8 assessment examinations are next week. Years 7 and 9 NAPLAN tests will also be conducted. It is a busy time for testing!

Joint Project update
Planning for the design of the Governors Centre is up and running! The meeting to select the preferred Head Designer Tenderers for the Governors Centre was held on April 28. A list of preferred tenderers was agreed. The Project Control Group (PCG) preferences were accepted by DFS on April 29. The tendering process will soon be implemented by Project Manager, Chris Klein. The design brief sub-committee also met on April 28 and provided GHD (Project Management) with further details about the proposed uses of the main areas within the proposed building – the performance centre, the examination centre and the foyer.

We will commence paying for the building as from this month so if you want to help support this ground-breaking project, now is the time to make your tax deductible donation to the Sydney High School Building Fund before the end of the tax year!

Generous Donation of portfolios
On behalf of the School I would like to thank the Warehouse Manager of Ross Fehlberg Pty Ltd for the kind donation by that company of >400 portfolios to be distributed to Year 12 students in September. The remainder will be offered to Year 9 students later in the year. Portfolios are useful to carry tablets, hold lecture note paper and keep stationery essentials in a slimline pack.

Co-curricular activities – season, semester or term payments
Parents have been invoiced for activities undertaken by their sons in term 1. These co-payments should be made promptly so that the minimum number of Clearance Forms needs to be issued prior to the half-yearly reporting cycle. As flagged earlier in the year, the DEC has now imposed the 19.5% on costs charge to all billable codes. This has the effect of adding nearly 20% to the costs of every coach employed by the School. We always try to keep our co-payments down to the bare minimum to cover the costs of coaching but this impost by DEC will have all budgets this year stretched to their limits. Some co-payments, such as for football (now $150), will have to be increased substantially in order for us to deliver quality coaching at all levels of sports participation. Families are reminded that the Sports Levy is fully allocated to the payment of MICs to administer sport. The levy raises c$90,000 but the cost to the school budget is $168,000.  Co-payments are levied solely to meet the cost of coaching.

Enjoy a special day of golf at one of Sydney’s most prestigious courses and help out a worthy cause at the same time. If you don’t play golf, book in for lunch at 1:30 and be entertained. On May 29 the SBHS team will be defending its title, The Foundation Cup, won at the 2014 event. Register at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Applying for Leave

1. You must have a Parent Portal account
2. Go to
3. Log in to the Parent Portal
4. Click “Applying for Leave”
5. Download the “Student Leave of Absence Application Form”

If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9662 9300 and dial “1” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly.  Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

If your son has early leave due to a medical appointment you are required to produce a note from the provider the following day.

Student Late Arrival

If your son arrives late to school he is required to scan his ID card outside the Main Office, collect his late arrival slip and have it signed by the teacher of the first class that they attend and see Mr Dowdell at the end of period 2. 

Enrolment Details Information Form

A number of students have still not returned their Enrolment Details Form.  Failing to do so will result in detention.

Half Yearly Reports

Half Yearly reports are usually given to boys at an interview with Dr Jaggar about three weeks after their examination period. Some boys may need a Clearance Form if they have overdue library books, if they were captains of summer sporting teams and have not submitted a report of the season for The Record, if they have not made their co-payment for summer sport or other activities, etc.

What I took note of –

• The big drop off in High School  annual reading rate (The Premier’s Reading Challenge becomes more unsuitable for advanced readers?) How can we address this more effectively?

• The take up of E books from local libraries is higher than anticipated – which is great news for literacy AND OUR STATE SCHOOLS NEED A NEW LIBRARY SYSTEM SO WE CAN ADD E BOOKS TO THE MIX

• ENGLISH  - Seeking Shakespeare at the State Library – Stage 3 enrichment, Stages 4 and 5 English – 2 hour program – explore the Shakespeare Room, visit the underground stacks to see the Library’s extensive collection including Shakespearean works from Charles Dickens own library. View rare objects from the Shakespeare collection including a model of the Globe Theatre, enjoy a drama workshop based on As You Like It, video your performance and take it back to school

SBHS Debating

Debating MIC Report

We are very busy with trials at the moment and next week I should be able to officially announce all the GPS teams which is very exciting because we will be doing this a lot earlier than in previous years. We are hoping that this will give us a more competitive edge by the time it comes to GPS because the GPS teams will be getting more intensive coaching for longer this year.

We have now come to the end of the FED competition and this week is the last round of Eastside. We do not expect to get into many Semi Finals because of our policy of rotating students through the teams. I would like to wish the Year 10 and Year 11 teams good luck as they are in the FED Semi finals this week.

Hopefully everyone who wanted to debate got the opportunity to do so once so far this year. In addition I am busy planning social debates for the rest of the term and there are still plenty of debating opportunities within coaching.

Remember that award points for debating coaching are not applied until the end of the year. This year, however, I will be allocating points for those students who have taken part in and chaired FED and Eastside debates.

In PDC we are coming to the end of the Year 11 and Year 12 Zones with one more debate for each team. The Junior PDC competitions will begin this term.

Prefects Debating Report

We were moderately successful on Friday with 2 wins out the 6 debates in both Eastside (against Sydney Girls) and FED (against PLC). The senior topics in both Eastside and FED were concerning international issues. In Eastside Years 10, 11 and 12 debated “That the US should cut aid to countries with discriminatory policies towards women”, whereas in FED the seniors debated “That we should ban drones”. Both topics were of contemporary significance and produced engaging debates. The winning teams were able to show how their side led to better outcomes for stakeholders concerned, namely the countries affected by the changes suggested in the topics. Congratulations to the Years 10 and 11 teams for qualifying for the Semi-finals and Good Luck in your respective debates.

Tip of the Week: Use emotive language in your speeches and provide examples to back up your points – Using emotive language in your speeches (especially introduction) as well as relevant examples are a great way to make the audience concerned and care about what you are talking about.

High Rugby = High Spirit

 

Congratulations to boys in the Opens Sydney East Rugby Team
Sydney High this year is being represented by four boys in the Sydney East Opens Rugby team. Congratulations to Steve Comninos, Eugene Lee, Joshua Leo and Sam Musgrove who all made the team. It is the highest Sydney High representation in this team for some time.

Good Luck to boys in the last round of CHS U/16 tryouts
Bennette Jiang, Jacob Katafono, Sama Malolo and James Tinker all made the final round of CHS Under 16 tryouts to be held May 16. A great effort by all of the boys involved.

Weigh Down rule
It is great to see four boys taking advantage of the weigh down rule started in the GPS last year. These boys will now play in the 15s age group instead of the 16s age group because they are under 62kg and therefore eligible to play in the 15s.

MIC of Football Report

For quite some time now we have been trying to arrange a friendly fixture against Sydney Tech. Finally on Wednesday we managed to complete this fixture and played a hard fought competitive game. Leading into the match there was a lot of hype from both schools as to who has the better football team coming from a selective school. Sydney Tech has a good reputation making the final 16 in the CHS knockout last year. For the majority of the match our boys were dominating in all aspects of the match. Unfortunately, once again our fitness and self-belief let us down and in the final 15 minutes Sydney Tech scored two very good goals to win the match. Our boys should still be proud of their efforts and the potential they are showing.

On a positive note Year 7 student Lachlan Fong’s mum, Tracey, has been chosen to be the face of Football NSW’s Mother’s Day promotion. To view the full article please follow the link.

This Saturday is the GPS Athletics Carnival then after that we will have our athletics boys back, therefore all teams will be training with their full squad. Our first trial match is against Shore on the 17th May.

Keep up the good effort and I am sure SBHS Football will have a successful season.

Following the success of last week’s inaugural High Chant Rally, we want you all to show your true support for High by attending the AAGPS Athletics Carnival, this Saturday (10/5/14).

To all those who got involved – we dearly thankyou, because the courage and initiative you showed exemplified that the fabled High Spirit is still strong in the hearts of all High boys.

To all juniors – you have now seen the High crowd in action, even if it was just around the junior quad. Come to the AAGPS Athletics carnival this Saturday and join in; continue the legacy of High, and indulge yourself in the ecstasy of GPS glory when we witness our athletes cross the finish line first.
