High Talent
High Praise Well done to the numerous volunteers who organised the mufti collection and barbecue for the Lak Saviya Foundation. Proceeds of the event were $2,316.85. Each year the money supports educational development activities at KRMV a Tsunami-ravaged school in Sri Lanka that we have been helping since 2005.
Technology Policy
AAGPS Heads Meeting The Football competition for first and second grade will be a seven round draw, with matches in the last seven weeks of the winter season. The third grade rugby competition will involve 9 teams. Each team will play 8 matches and have a bye. The 2014 draw will be a new draw.
Mr Shane Hogan, Head of Riverview, had his last meeting with the GPS Heads. Mr Hogan served as
Chairman of the GPS Heads Committee for several years. On your behalf I would like to acknowledge
his outstanding contribution to the AAGPS as an organisation of schools wanting to play games
against each other for the purpose of educating boys. He was unfailingly supportive of High and
our interests during his time in the chair. As a colleague he has collaborated with me frequently
and always proved a wise counsellor and friend with a sensible, well-balanced view of life. He
will be missed a great deal by the Riverview community and by those associated with the
AAGPS. 
From the CanteenThanks to our volunteers last week. A special thank you to Theo for coming in twice and to Christiana Haddo who we omitted from the list for Monday 11/3. The canteen managers, the school and the boys appreciate all the time given by mums, dads and grandparents.

SBHS DebatingIt was a welcome rest for me to watch our teams debate last week. I attended the FED debates at Newington and Ms Rigby went to Reddam. At Newington our social debaters were more successful than the competitive debaters. It was pleasing to hear that the Year 12 Eastside team won their debate – even after turning up to the wrong campus and thus being late! There is no debating coaching this week. Next week (5th April) there will only be coaching for the teams only because most of our coaches are attending the Easter Debating competition at ANU – we wish them all good luck. However, there will be coaching on during the last week of the school term – this is a one off because of the disruption caused by Easter and the Uni Debating competitions. Anyone new to debating – we don’t usually have coaching on the last day of term. I am looking for some students to take over the running of the school debating website. There has been a lot of work completed on this during last year and I thank Christopher Chen for organising all of that. This is our website: . Please have a look and, if you are interested in being part of a team which updates the information (Award points will be available), please come to see me. I know that some of the coaching coordinators are keen to run GPS trials much earlier this year and I am encouraging them to do this. In the past we have not been able to run a very good program for non GPS debaters so we have kept classes together for as long as possible. However, we now have a fantastic program for GPS and non GPS and I am sure that all students will receive a quality coaching program based on their needs and abilities and I feel that having GPS coaching start early will further our chances of success in GPS and PDC. Please, if you are interested in trying out for the competitive teams, listen carefully to the coaches and look for information in the debating email. If you are unlucky in try outs then, of course, it is disappointing, but there will be plenty of opportunities for you to debate socially and your coaches will be able to help you further develop your debating skills for next year.

With a lot of debaters having commitments with the basketball dinner, many junior debaters got the chance to debate for the first time giving them valuable experience in the lead up to the PDC and GPS competition. Whilst results this week were slightly disappointing in both the FED and Eastside Competition we saw some positive outcomes for all debaters. The Senior A Eastside team came away with a win on the topic “That we should help citizens of China circumvent their internet filter” after a comprehensive performance against Reddam House. Unfortunately the Year 11s lost in what was a very tight decision. In the FED competition, the Senior A team lost in what was a very close debate against Newington’s 1st Grade debating side. Top effort boys! Although we saw quite a few losses in the junior Years, it is important to note the progress and skills these boys are learning through each debate. I’m sure as the competition progresses the development and skills the boys will have acquired will definitely shine through.
Khushaal’s Tip of the week: Change the tone of your voice throughout your
speech. It adds effect and is much more interesting than simply talking loudly or monotonously.
On top of this, it makes the audience more inclined to listen to your arguments and be
persuaded.
Basketball: Shootin' HoopsAs the last edition of Shootin’ Hoops for the 2012 – 2013 seasons, here are the final season statistics for all of High’s teams:
In addition to these great stats of the overall school, an outstanding team this season would definitely be the High 2nd Grade team, who were the outright premiers of the AAGPS 2nd Grade League. 1st Grade also did the school very proud, coming 3rd in the AAGPS 1st Grade league and smashing Mr Ben Hayman’s goal for 1st Grade at the beginning of the season. Not to mention the countless unsung heroes within our school basketball community, the 2012-2013 season proved to be a great season for all teams at High. Work hard in the off season, and see you guys at the end of the year!

SHS Cross Country CarnivalCongratulations to the top 10 runners in each age group, at this year’s school Cross Country carnival. These finalists are now representing the school at the coming Zone Carnival in Term 2. Students highlighted are the SHS Cross Country Age Champions for 2013!
From SwimmingGPS Swimming Report – Carnival 4 @ RiverviewCarnival 4 provided our swimmers the last opportunity to sharpen their competitiveness before the last carnival. It was also an opportunity to experiment with different strokes. It was great to see all the swimmers perform at such a high standard. The new boys contributed to our depth and allowed the team to strengthen its performances especially in the relays. The new students who joined swimming in Year 9 include Christian Haddo, Luke Schofield, Max Menzel, Kalem Best and Andrew McNaughton. They have made a valuable contribution the swimming team. Well done, boys. GPS Swimming Report – Carnival 5 @ SOPACCarnival 5 was always going to be rather tense as it was the last opportunity for all swimmers to clock times that gave them GPS selection. Our boys went to the carnival feeling confident that they will perform to their best. It was great to see a small group of HIGH supporters organised by the SRC attend and support the swimming team. Furthermore, thank you to the all parents for sacrificing their time each week and making such a positive contribution to the swimming program. A special thanks to Mr M Pavone (Sports Master) and Dr K Jaggar (Principal) for supporting the swimmers at all times. Notable achievements on the night:

HAPPY EASTER READ LOTS – E-books, your local library?? Many Local Libraries are developing a great E-book collection. All you need is a current Library card and the world of literature is at your fingertips. Who has a notepad? Ask for one as a present. I bought an Android device for $85 and took books to read overseas last year – great way to read!

World Challenge Expedition to AfricaZambia & Botswana in 2014/5Dear Parent/Guardian of Y9 & Y10 Students, World Challenge is delighted to announce the launch of a very exciting program for Y9 and Y10 students. This program will culminate in a month long expedition to Zambia & Botswana, departing after Christmas in December 2014. Students will explore the Kalahari Desert, navigate through the Okavango Delta by boat and experience up close the might and power of the Victoria Falls. Along the way, they will also work and interact with under-privileged communities in sub-Saharan Africa and learn desert survival skills from local bushmen. As if that wasn’t enough, a World Challenge expedition is led by the students – under the watchful eye of their Expedition Leader and assisting staff. Initially, they will be involved in planning their itinerary, and whilst away they will take on much of the day-to-day decision making. They will manage their budget throughout the trip, decide where to stay and what to eat, and how they are to travel between the different locations on their itinerary. A World Challenge expedition is a unique and powerful activity that will broaden your son’s understanding of the world while significantly developing his leadership and teamwork skills. Completing a World Challenge program has been proven to enhance future university and career prospects. World Challenge would like to invite you and your son to a presentation 7pm Wednesday 3 April – The Great Hall, Sydney Boys High School delivered by a member of our team who will discuss the benefits of the program, the fundraising support and safety back-up we provide, and how we deliver a fun, rewarding, and safe experience.
