High Talent
Congratulations to our winners at the St. Ignatius short course swimming carnival last Friday: Brandon Yoon (13 yrs 50m freestyle and breaststroke); Christian Haddo (15yrs 50m freestyle and breaststroke), Leonard Mah (16yrs freestyle and breaststroke), Allen Guo (12 yrs 50m breaststroke and backstroke), Kevin Guo (14yrs 50m breaststroke); 15 yrs 4x50m. freestyle relay (Haddo, Nakamura, Menzel, McNaughton); Harvey Luo 13 yrs 50m breaststroke-Div), Max Menzel (15 yrs 50m backstroke Div) and James Chee (16yrs 50m backstroke Div). Well done to Patrick Rynsaardt who was selected in the NSWCHS Open Boys Tennis team to play All Schools for Pizzey Cup selection. Patrick and Frank Zhang also were selected in the Combined GPS tennis teams. Good effort, boys!

Joint Project Update
The draft Memorandum of Understanding between Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls was completed this week and submitted to the Regional Assets Management Unit. The Ministerial Submission for approval of the project by the Minister has been prepared and is scheduled to be submitted by the end of the month. The Joint Project Committee can begin preparing for action as soon as the green light for the project is received from the Minister. The level of cooperation between the schools is high and the collective enthusiasm for moving this project ahead is strong.

探花视频 Building Fund
Thanks to the great support by parents so far this year our new 探花视频 Building Fund has funds held specifically for the joint project Governors Centre of $325,192 as a result of donations made so far this year. Disbursements for necessary capital expenditures have been made and all donations for the rest of the financial year will be applied to this major project for High’s future. Year 7 parents should be particularly keen to support this Fund as their sons have every prospect of using the new facility in 2018, if a higher percentage of parents each year join in the giving program. Many parents, Old Boys and friends of High have given before you so this major addition to our learning facilities can be achieved. Funds available for the project are now $1,900,000. We have a target of $2,250,000 by December 31 and $3,000,000 by December 2014. If you haven’t made your donation yet, I urge you to do so. Forms are available at .

Trusts under SHSF Management
The 探花视频 Foundation is Trustee for funds held on the school’s behalf to be used for specific purposes. Many prizes and awards are funded from the Trusts. Our annual Phillip Day Memorial Trust Scholar is funded from a trust. Students with financial needs are assisted and our art collection and honour boards are maintained. Gold paint and labour to update our many honour boards with the names of our achievers, cost more than $1,600 per year. Photographs of high achievers and Old Boys, framed blazers and memorabilia cost c$1k annually. Movement in the Trust accounts for 2011 were:  Ethel Killip Memorial Art Collection ($98k to $101k); Mitchell Seow Memorial Trust ($6,976 to $7,186); The Prizes Trust ($66.2k to $78.2k); the SBHS Scholarship Trust ($49.9k to $54k); and the new Anzac Trust for students with financial needs ($10,290). The Foundation decided all Trusts would disburse 50% of the interest earned in 2012. It is paid to the school to help fund the purposes of the Trusts, the remainder is reinvested to grow the Trusts. The Sydney High Foundation provides an ongoing financial service to the school at no cost and I want to again acknowledge how beneficial the relationship is, with over $252,412 under management.

Annual School Report
The hard copy of the Annual School Report has been distributed. The document has many contributors. I would like to thank you all for your efforts. Ms Lynne Williams was again the editor and did the bulk of the layout and composition of the ASR. On your behalf I thank her for her professionalism, persistence and patience. The ASR is not a document to publish and forget. It is an expression of what we have done, are doing and want to do this year. I use it as a blueprint supporting the Management Plan for the year. The Executive will be analysing data from various sections of the report and refining our practice or responding to suggestions as appropriate. I commend the report to you. From the Canteen

Thank you to everyone who volunteers in our canteen, without your help it could not run as well as it does.  Ours is one of the few remaining school canteens which is not privately owned, which means we are able to make the substantial funds which we give to the P & C to spend on items which benefit all of our sons.

The Canteen Committee meets on the 2nd Friday of each month at 3.00pm in the boardroom.  We are looking for new members as our current committee only have one more year at the school and ideally we need some people from Yrs 7-9 to join now.  If you would like to become involved, please come along.  The next meeting will be Friday 12th April.

SBHS Debating

PDC begins this week with the Hume Barbour Competition. We have entered two teams this year: SBHS Reds are a Year 11 squad Jon Freiburg, Tushaar Garg, Andrew Liu, Sam Philis, Lokesh Sharma and this week their first debate is against St George Girls at High. SBHS Blues who are Connor, Khushaal, Albert and Wilber have not got their first debate scheduled yet. Good luck to you, boys. In addition we have a Year 11 team entered into the Metro debating competition (Karl Kramp) and these boys are: Peter Stephens, Riley Irwin, Daniel Fang, Edric Wang. We had great success in PDC last year with Year 12s victorious across the State; Year 11s runners up in the Regional final and Year 10s narrowly missing out on State victory. Best of luck this year to all the boys who are representing High in the Premier’s Debating Challenge.

Over the last two Fridays we had varied success in the Years and in the competitions, but overall we are still in a good position to reach Semi-finals if we continue to gain confidence and get good results. As always we are disadvantaged in FED and Eastside because we rotate our teams. However, this means a range of boys get to competitively debate which is a positive benefit. Remember, if you are interested in debating YOU MUST TELL YOUR COACH.

I was away on the Canberra excursion last week so was unable to submit a report from either myself or from Khushaal, who is our debating prefect. Each week Khushaal will give you some more detail on his debate and one other. If you would like to have your debate featured then please talk to Khushaal.

This week both debates are away – FED at Newington and Eastside at Reddam. Good luck to teams. I will be going to Newington and Ms Rigby to Reddam.

Eastside Round 2 competition saw High front up against Cranbrook. Though our results are promising with lots of win in Junior Years, the Senior teams have been very unlucky with some very odd topics and some close decisions. This week’s Senior topic was “that we should legalize recreational drugs in music festivals”. The Senior A team had a high quality debate and were unlucky to come away the losing side. However they did demonstrate a major improvement from the rustiness shown last week and should boost them for next week’s debate against Sydney Girls.

In the FED competition we again saw successful Junior teams highlighting how High Debating is in very good hands. Unfortunately, the Year 12 FED team lost their debate in what was a very close and challenging topic about “stopping trade with countries that abuse human rights”. Year 11 FED was successful and won their debate convincingly.

1st Grade
The final round of the GPS competition saw High travel to King’s to take on the competition leaders. The boys were looking forward to the challenge of playing spoilers to the King’s premiership along with the opportunity to end the season on a high note. It was a deflating start for us, with High going down in all three doubles. Number 1 doubles, Patrick and Frank played a memorable match for the last time as a pair that consisted of numerous changes of momentum, going down in a tight battle 4-6 6-7(5). Number 2 doubles, Ian and Eddy put in a great effort against the undefeated number 2 pair from Kings, despite going down 1-6 1-6. Number 3 doubles, Adam and Josh played some excellent points in the match, however were undone by their opponents creative play, 1-6 2-6. In the number 1 singles, a powerful match consisting of big groundstrokes and serves saw Patrick come up just short of victory in his final match, 4-6 4-6. In the number 2 singles, Frank was unable to find the form that carried him throughout the season, also going down in his final match 0-6 2-6. The number 3 singles saw Ian play his final match with courage against a much stronger opponent, going down 1-6 0-6. In the number 4 singles, Adam’s consistent game was undone by some impressive play by his opponent, 1-6 2-6. In the number 5 singles, Josh fought back in the second set to tighten the match after a loose first set, but ultimately came up short in the end, 1-6 4-6. In the number 6 singles, Eddy was unable to find a way around his crafty young opponent, going down 1-6 0-6. The final result was a disappointing defeat at the hands of the 2013 premiers, with High being undone by the superior play displayed by our opponents. For the Year 12 boys, Patrick, Frank, and Ian, it was definitely an emotional day with the boys playing for the school for the final time. Despite the efforts of all the boys in the team throughout the whole season, High placed a disappointing 7th overall with inclement weather proving detrimental to our performance this season. However, the strong performances of our top two players saw Patrick gain selection at number 4 in the 1st grade GPS team and Frank earning selection as number 1 in the 2nd grade GPS team. As the 2012/2013 season along with my five year endeavour in 1st grade tennis have come to an end, there are numerous people that need to be thanked for all their time and effort in making High tennis a memorable experience for all; Dr Jaggar for his ongoing support towards tennis, MIC Mr Wright for his countless hours dedicated to the organisational work behind tennis, coach David Deep, Mr Pavone, TJ, Josh and Kurt.

2nd Grade
After having two Saturdays rained out, High 2nds trained as hard as ever to improve their skills to perform their absolute best for the final match of the GPS season against King’s. Doubles pair number 1, Carl and Richard, performed aggressively with their net play gaining a tight lead on their opponents, winning the first set 6-4. The Second set proved slightly troublesome as performance began to lower, however only just losing the set 4-6. The super tie-breaker finisher forced the two to play their absolute max which proved it’s worth winning the super tie-break at a comfortable 10-2. Number 2 doubles, Bohan and Ryo, performed strongly against their opponents. However, unforced errors and aggressive net play from the opponents led to a 3-6 3-6 loss. Number 3 doubles, Matt and James, a new pair fought hard and strongly against their opponents, however lack of experience and also intense net play from King’s led to a 2-6 1-6 loss. With King’s only one match ahead of High, Seconds were ready to take the win with the singles. Number one singles, Carl, began the first set comfortably however unforced errors through the latter part of the set led to a tight 7-5 win. Increased consistency from the opponent and unforced errors led to a still tight loss in the second set, 4-6. In the third set, Carl was ready to take the win, but lack of confidence and consistency led to a disappointing loss in the last set, 2-6. Number 2 singles, Richard, had a tough battle against his consistent and aggressive opponent. With a 4-1 lead in the first set, unforced errors led to a 4-6 loss. The second set was the redemption of Richard as hard fought points and increased consistency led to a 6-3 win. The last set was intense with neither player giving up the match which unfortunately came to a tie due to the time at 3-4. Number 3 singles, Ryo, had a difficult battle against a strong yet also consistent player winning the first set through pure hard fought points, 7-5. However, the second set was taken by King’s due to increasing unforced errors unlike the first set, losing 1-6. However the third set proved to be another intense and long one with King’s only just managing to take the win 6-4. Singles number 4, James, played against a very heavy top spin player who was also aggressive at the net. Holding his opponent off at the baseline proved worthwhile, however increased pressure from the opponent and his net play led to a 3-6 2-6 loss. Number 5 singles, Matt, a new player playing his first GPS second grade match was sure to play his absolute hardest. Experience from the opponent and heavy fast groundstrokes however, led to a hard fought loss of 1-6 1-6. Number 6 singles, Bohan, played a tough heavy spinner on both serves and groundstrokes. The unorthodox and awkward balls along with unforced errors led to a 0-6 1-6 loss. Although High did not perform well in terms of the results, the amount of intense and hard fought points indicate the start to a new beginning as High will be more ready than ever for the next season of Tennis. Finally, our coach Matthew Cotton needs to be thanked for his efforts in improving our results each week.

End of Season Tennis Barbeque

Following the completion of the 2nd grade rubber at home, the boys from across the board of age groups from the tennis program came out in force for a fabulous night of tennis activities with friends and family. The boys were treated to a huge feast consisting of a sausage sizzle, bbq chicken, chips, drinks and a large array of salads. The activities on offer including the ever so popular speed serve, and the giant Wilson racquet were among the big hits of the night. Overall the night was a huge success for all, with the valuable funds raised going straight back into our fantastic tennis program. Special thanks to Rob Rynsaardt, our fantastic tennis president and expert barbeque chef, MIC Mr Wright, coach David Deep, the 1st grade boys for collecting the money and to everyone who attended to support High tennis.

5th & 6th Tennis

Saturday the 16th of March. The last GPS tennis match for the season, and for some of us, our last tennis match for High ever. What came about at the end of the day were disappointing results, but as we were up against King’s- one of the best schools for tennis in the GPS, I’d say we went down fighting. Doubles across the board for the 5th and 6th grade teams resulted in losses, with players including myself taking a while to warm up and get back into the swing of things (pun intended) after last week’s Head of the River. After a few games my serve was once again up to par, but it was too late for the match, and Junjie and I lost 6-3.

In regard to singles, most of the matches once again were losses, with quite a few scores lying at 6-2. However for some this was not the case. In the final points of his game Gordon Q in 6th grade pulled away in the tiebreaker to take the match. In my own game (as seed 5.1) I was neck and neck with my opponent, who seemed to be an equal with me in terms of skill and fitness. However it was he who dropped out first, and at 4-4 I pulled away to win the next two games and the match. He was clearly disappointed, a feeling I imagine was shared by many boys on the day who did not win. Of course it’s always nice to end on a high, but it’s just as important to remember the rest of the season with every other match and every other training session. While this may have been my last tennis match for High, it definitely isn’t my last tennis match. Thanks to the other boys and to Mr Wright, and well done to everyone. Best of luck for the next season.

St Ignatius Carnival 4

The penultimate GPS swimming carnival of the 2013 season was held last Friday evening at St Ignatius College. Despite the absence of a few accomplished swimmers, High still performed well in every event. With 13 wins in total, High had 4 standout swimmers, who each won two individual events: Allen Guo, Brandon Yoon, Christian Haddo, and Leonard Mah. The 15 years 4x50 freestyle relay continued their undefeated streak in convincing style. The first place finishes were:

The Swimming Team needs YOUR SUPPORT at this final carnival at SOPAC to give them the send-off they deserve.

3 Premierships in 3 years! Is this the best sporting performance in school history? Last game of the season saw High in an exhilarating showdown against King’s last weekend, where both 1st and 2nd Grade came back from a large deficit to win with the smallest margins this week. This win was crucial to 1st Grade; they are now tied 3rd on the GPS table, a very exciting result for 1st Grade that the school should be very proud of. In 2nd Grade, High superstar Bailey Musulin managed to score a game-winning layup to put High on a 13 win 1 loss record for the season, rendering them GPS Premiers for the 2012-13 season. Congratulations to both Opens teams! Another great result from the Opens teams came from 4th Grade, where with the game tied at 25 all Andrew once again rose to the occasion and sank the game winner.

It’s great to see that lower age groups such as the 13s are experiencing good wins in their games, a very impressive feat that was certainly much better than when I was in the 13s in 2009. Congratulations to all teams on a great effort this season, and make sure all of you attend the Basketball Dinner if you can! Season stats will also be finalised soon; check back in High Notes one last time before the Athletics season or check with Mr B Hayman to see how your team went

Sydney Boys High School Sailing

Saturday fleet racing concluded this weekend, in light winds of around 3-5 knots from the NW. Sydney High sailors had the best results for the term, helped by the absence of the Cranbrook sailors and the lighter conditions.

Fleet Racing
Two short course races were held with Sydney High sailors achieving outstanding results in both. In Race 1, the most outstanding result was achieved by Darren Tiang who sailed consistently into 2nd position, closely followed by David Evans, Hayden Rabone and Tim Pilien in a fleet size of 26 boats. David had a great start and sailed most legs around the course in the top placing, but was overtaken when forced to Jive on the sausage leg close to the finish. Sydney High gained six out of the top ten positions.

In Race 2 the results were even better with Tim Pilien showing the form of a champion and finding the speed lines needed to win a race. Daniel Fang was also finding form at the end of the season with a splendid second place. David Evans showed his strengths by gaining a well- deserved third and Darren Tiang rounding out a top four success. Great placings were achieved by Hayden Rabone (6th), Kai Matsumoto (8th) and Vincent Xu (10th), making this the best result for the year. Close starts were the order of the day at training

Teams Racing
The Sydney High Team Racing teams sailed well in the conditions against all schools, including the Riverview team, this weekend.  Reasonable results were gained although in this sailing area Sydney High teams need additional training in the areas of boat handling and the use of rules to succeed further in the upcoming State titles, held in week ten. Teams racing training will continue on Saturday in the morning, against Scots and Ascham schools.

WotOpera

Original operas meaningful to the lives of young people

A group of Music and Drama students have collaborated to create an Opera.  Please come along and enjoy the show.

Following its highly successful program in Sydney last year, WotOpera returns with fresh faces and four new, original works!

WotOpera unlocks the creative potential of young people. Over eighty students from four Sydney high schools have written four operas that showcase their creativity, talents and boundless imaginations, the participating schools are:

• Holroyd High School
• Lurnea High School
• Manly Selective Campus
• Sydney Boys High School 

The students collaborated to produce their own stories, then composed the music and designed and painted their sets in a series of four one-day workshops representing just 21 hours! The four schools will come together to perform their individual works at The Seymour Centre.

You are invited to delight in their journey and enjoy their creations on Tuesday 26 March at 7pm.

Proud Schools Celebration

Burwood Girls High School

On February 26th, a group of students from High attended a riot of colour at Proud School’s Celebration at Burwood Girls. Proud Schools is an initiative to end homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism, and to provide a safe and supportive environment for same sex attracted and gender diverse students.

Guests of the school attended a celebratory school assembly including guest speakers, Jayden Ellis and Brenna Harding from Wear It Purple; musical performances by students and a special visit from a drag queen called Joyce Mange. The assembly’s underlying message was that if a student feels included and connected to their respected schools, their education and wellbeing will be greatly improved. It was followed by a rainbow flag raising ceremony and 1365 colourful cupcakes were made for the guests.

After morning tea, programs were organised for students to reflect as individuals and as a group on a range of issues. It was aimed at school environments and providing a safe place for same-sex attracted students. Overall it was an enlightening day for all the students and a big thank you to Mr Walker and Mr Kay for organising the transport and participation in the event.
