Library Committee Meeting
At the Library Committee Meeting held
last Friday, Ms Elaine Sadler (Parent Rep.), Mr John Walker (HT Student Welfare), Ms Veronica
Crothers, Ms Suzanne Gordon (Teacher Librarians) and I discussed the operation of the two school
libraries. The Balance Sheet for the Public Library Fund was tabled and discussed. Balance
brought forward was $21,852.37 to which was added: parents’ donations ($114,166.25), GST
refunds and printing card income ($3,119) and interest ($974.96). Expenditures comprised
equipment, books, subscriptions, papers, teaching/learning resources, software ($32,657.54) and
administration (mainly salaries) $88,000.12. The school bears additional costs of the two
libraries from its No.1 Account. Capital program expenditure was $250. After total expenditures
of $120,907.66 the Fund carried forward its working capital reserve of $19,204.92. The school
account absorbed expenditure for salaries and equipment of c$20k. Direct expenditures on library
services amounted to c$120 per head for every student at High. Income was $96/student. The
shortfall each year is taken from general contributions.
The two Librarians responded to questions about budget items and the mix of expenditures on
software/books and subscriptions. They outlined their budgets for the coming year. There was
considerable discussion about e-books and online learning. Database license purchases needed to
be justified on the basis of student use, cost and alternative access. Access to State Library is
important to many of our boys and our Librarians will do the necessary training now that the help
from the State Library has been withdrawn. The change of timetable and the reduction in Values
Education time have made it difficult for Veronica to give Library training to Junior School
boys. Ms Sadler re-visited her previous suggestion that the Libraries needed a 5-year plan to set
directions for pedagogical and personal development through library services access.
SHSSA AGM
More than a dozen people attended the Annual General Meeting of
the ̽»¨ÊÓƵ Sailing Association last Saturday morning at Double Bay Sailing Club. The
Association membership is open to Old Boys, Parents, university students and those interested in
learning to sail. The Association provides a vehicle for YA membership at a very low cost. The
Association has an agreement with Double Bay Sailing Club to provide boat storage, club house
facilities and safety services for our sailing program until June, 2017. In 2012, two new Pacers
were purchased, bringing the fleet to 10. This year another two will be ordered to allow 24
sailors to compete simultaneously. There are 57 sailors in our program in 2013. I encourage all
sailing parents to join the Association to support their sons.
Financial Forum Reminder
Planning, implementing and monitoring a budget can
be a problem in the complex DEC accounting system. As Principal I am personally responsible for
all monies collected and expended as public monies through the school accounts. I have delegated
authority to MICs and Support Groups to raise and spend money on behalf of the school. It is
important that we all understand how the accountability process works. Please come to the
forum/briefing with your Supporters Group representative or Treasurer on Monday, March 18 at 6pm
in the Great Hall.
Parking Issues
Moore Park West and Bat and Ball Oval are being booked by
non-SBHS people on most afternoons each week. These hirers feel they have a right to park on our
site. UTS has published its booking schedule. The gym is used each weekday from 6pm. SBHS vacates
the gym at 5 and it is cleaned before UTS users arrive. We are locking gates 9, 10 and 1 most
days now. Extra restraints will be needed to section off the site so UTS can have their 30 car
spaces. The result of this increased traffic will be that parents and staff coming to meetings
after 5pm each day may find the premises locked down. If you are having a meeting after hours,
please arrange to have keys to open a section of the site for your parents to gain access.

Family Pass to Luna Park!
The competition closes on Friday, 22 March and the winner will be drawn on Tuesday, 26
March, just in time for Easter.

SBHS Debating
The Debating Season got off to a good start last week. The Juniors were successful in all their
debates in FED and Eastside - very well done and keep it up. The Seniors were less
successful with only Year 10 and 11 wins against Rose Bay in Eastside.
We had a great turn out of food for the supper and many parents stayed around to help. As we have
two competitions running here for the following two weeks we need even more helpers –
especially in the senior years. At the end of the evening we all like to leave as soon as we can
and it took Nina,
Mr Vyas and myself longer to pack away because there was just the three of us adults here. If
senior parents can stay around for a short while after the debate we could really use your help.
It was nice to meet some new parents at the Parents Information Night. This was a great
opportunity to talk through the program (which can seem very confusing at times) and to answer
questions that parents had. I would like to extend a big thanks to members of the DSG who stayed
to help with the presentation – especially when the traffic was so bad and it took many of
you such a long time to get here and back home afterwards.
Our next parking event is on 22nd March and this is an important way to raise money for the
debating program. If you are able to give up some time on that day please contact me via the
Gmail address below and I will forward your contact details on to Sunil Sethi our Parking
Coordinator.
I would like to say a particular thank you to Bosco and Adilmorad who stood in at the very last
minute as some Year 10s pulled out on Friday. This is very bad form and put a lot of stress onto
me and the coaches when we had other things to attend to. If you are unsure if you can
debate, do not sign up and if you find out you cannot debate you must tell me as early as
possible.
Both debates are at Home this week and so I need lots of chair people. It was lovely to see
some new faces in the chair people room last week and of course just as lovely to see some
of the old hands! Double hosting is always chaotic. So in advance I'd like to thank you for
your support. A special thanks to Nathan and Oliver my trusted helpers without whom I
wouldn’t get the job done!

Round 6 of the GPS competition saw High play its final home match
of the season against ultimate rivals Grammar. With 3 out of the 5 rounds being rain affected, it
was no surprise when we arrived at school to find the courts under water. However, with
determination and eagerness to play and pick up much needed competition points, the boys arrived
an hour before schedule to prepare the courts for play. The immense effort from the boys, coaches
and parents saw the doubles commence around our usual time of 12:30pm. It was a tough start to
the day with the boys struggling in the first sets of the number 2 and 3 doubles, despite the
number 1 doubles pair cruising along before a rain delay affected play at 1:30pm. With a lengthy
one hour delay to talk over tactics, the resumption of play saw an improvement in all doubles
matches. Number 1 doubles combo of Frank and Patrick, quickly and comfortably dispatched their
opponents winning 12 straight games, 6-0 6-0. Number 2 doubles, Adam and Ian recovered to find
themselves with a lead in the second set, however in the end were unable to push the match to a
tiebreak, 3-6 5-7. Number 3 doubles, Josh and Eddy fought back after a poor first set to
comfortably take the second, however couldn’t capitalise on momentum, going down 2-6 6-2
2-10. After the doubles High faced a 2-1 deficit and needed to pick up matches quickly in
the singles with storm clouds threatening once again. In the number 2 singles, Pat took advantage
of having no umpire to race through his match, equalising the rubber with a dominating win, 6-0
6-4. In the number 1 singles, Frank capped off an impressive day with a ‘quad bagel’
win, as a result of not dropping a single game all day, dispatching his opponent 6-0 6-0. Rain
once again affected play once again at 4:00pm with High leading the rubber 3-2. However, with
Adam and Josh both securing their first sets in the singles, an effort was once again made to dry
the courts in an attempt to gain more points. As play resumed after another hour long delay, no 3
Adam finished off his match comfortably winning 6-2 6-0. In the number 5 singles, Josh also
completed an impressive win and secured the 3 bonus points for High with the fifth win of the
day, 6-0 6-1. Eddy was unable to hang on till the end of day’s play, going down 2-6
1-6. Finally in the number 4 singles, Ian held on for a tight draw with his opponent 3-6 5-6
unfinished. The final result, High earning a major win over rivals Grammar 8.5 to 3.5, giving us
a major boost of confidence as the season nears it closing stages. The boys will be keen to
finish the season on a positive next week when we travel to face competition leaders,
King’s.

2nd Grade
This week High went out against Grammar, and after a
disappointing cancellation against Scots, Seconds were pumped to play a good day's worth of
tennis against Grammar to make up. However the weather was, once again, not on our side. Small
chances to start the day and matches occurred, yet none were long enough to sustain a warm up as
well as the start of the match. Disappointed that for the second week in a row that the matches
were cancelled, High drew with Grammar 6-6. With Head of the River on the coming Saturday,
seconds will have an extra week of intense training to make sure they are ready for the last
match of the GPS Tennis Season, against King’s.

Riverview Junior Regatta Results
The High Junior crews raced at Lane Cove last Saturday morning in wet, cold and windy conditions,
and results were a little disappointing for the last regatta of the season. A couple of Y8 crews
had gear failures and there was a mix up of crews for some of the Y9 quad events. However, the Y9
3rd quad came 2nd in their heat in a time of 3.38.36, which put them through to the final. They
finished 4th in the final in a time of 3.42.84. The Y9 1st quad came 3rd in their final in a time
of 3.41.99.
Congratulations to Y9 3rd quad – Tony Dong, William Chen, Jiachen Lu, Jason Qiu, (c)
Stratton Vakirtzis, and Y9 1st quad – Kevin Fan, Ed Belokopytov, Jacob Katafono, Oliver
Lethbridge, (c) Keith Chambers.

GPS Swimming
Report – Carnival 3 @ SOPAC
Carnival 3 proved to be more competitive than previous carnivals. The competition is now
intensifying as all swimmers are fighting for a spot on the GPS team. It was great to have
everyone back in good health once more as this proved to be crucial for the relay teams. The most
improved team performance went to the seniors who recorded a 2nd position finish in the 4 x 100
medley relay and some great individual performances. A huge improvement from previous carnivals.
Well done to the boys involved: Dominic Mah, George Dzero, Darren, Chien, Yu Peng Man and Eugene
Lee. The 14s and 15s continued their dominance in relay events. The 14s are: Kalem Best, Luke
Schofield, Kevin Guo and Jason Qiu. The 15s are: Andrew McNaughton, Max Menzel, Kazuo Nakamura
and Christian Haddo. The 13s and 16s 4 x 50 m medley relays both finished 3rd. Impressive
results.
Carnival results can be viewed by students on the R Drive: Sport\Swimming\2013 folder.
Notable achievements on the night included:
- The 15s relay team for winning their event by 8 seconds
- 24 top 3 finishes out of 60 events
- 10 1st finishes out of 60
- The Junior division 12-14 years who have progressed from 3rd to 2nd position
- The intermediate team 15-16 years old who have progressed from 5th to 2nd position.
Great effort boys

There is one more week of the 2012 – 2013 AAGPS Summer Sports season vs
King’s next weekend. All of High’s teams performed magnificently against
Grammar, congratulations to all! Both our 1st and 2nd Grade achieved outstanding results
following their wins against Grammar; 1st Grade could finish the season with a top 4 finish, a
finish which I’m sure Mr Ben Hayman will be very happy with as this was his goal of the
season for 1st Grade this year. Being a relatively new team to play together, 1st Grade grew and
established themselves in a fantastic fashion to do High proud this season. For 2nd Grade it
could be an even better result; AAGPS 2nd Grade Premiers with only one narrow loss to St.
Ignatius breaking their winning streak. The table above shows that High 2nd Grade has the 2nd
best defence in the league and the 3rd highest scoring points; however being able to still come
out on top by so much shows that it’s not about brute scoring and defence when playing
basketball, but about the High motto of playing hard, playing smart and playing
together! Congratulations to both our High open representatives on their excellent results! GPS
1sts- Gerlach. GPS 2nds- Flynn, Kelly, Baraceros.
Remember House Basketball is still on during Tuesday lunchtimes; come and support your house and
be part of the fun! There will still be training for this week, so make sure you make the most
out of it before we go on to the Athletics season. Train hard!

CHS Water Polo
Sydney High went into last Wednesday’s game against Sydney Technical High School ready to
win and move onto the CHS Round Robin. This was a knock-out game, and we knew we had to win!
In the first quarter, both sides played cautiously, but High managed to pull ahead 4-1, due to
our tight defending and swift counter-attacking. Everyone in the team played their best and
communicated well, which saw us increase our lead to 7-2 in the second quarter. Our stamina
outlasted Tech’s, and we began to capitalise on their mistakes, bringing the score up to
12-3 at three-quarter time. In the last quarter, despite a sudden change of playing style from
Tech, our endurance was too much for them, and we out-swam and out-played them at every
opportunity, finishing the game at 16-5.

Original operas meaningful to the lives of young people
Following its highly successful program in Sydney last year, WotOpera returns with fresh faces
and four new, original works!
WotOpera unlocks the creative potential of young people. Over eighty students from four Sydney
high schools have written four operas that showcase their creativity, talents and boundless
imaginations, the participating schools are:
Holroyd High School
Lurnea High School
Manly Selective Campus
Sydney Boys High School
The students collaborated to produce their own stories, then composed the music and designed and
painted their sets in a series of four one-day workshops representing just 21 hours! The four
schools will come together to perform their individual works at The Seymour Centre.
You are invited to delight in their journey and enjoy their creations on Tuesday 26 March at 7pm.

From the Junior Library
INTRODUCING N D WILSON
Occasionally a special writer emerges from the pack
to delight us with a genre we thought could produce no more surprises. So in the past few
years we have seen the emergence of Fantasy writers, Cornelia Funke - the Inkheart
Series, the manic addictive popularity of George R Martin - The Game of Thrones
Series and DM Cornish’s Lamplighter Series. ND Wilson, 100
Cupboards Series, is such a writer and our library is processing this series right now to
put out on the shelves. This is a great junior read with a 13 year old male hero Henry who
has inherited the fiery and magical powers of dandelions??? You will have to read the
series to find out about these. (Not silly at all) Coming to our shelves very soon!!
NEW DIRECTION – STUDENTS CAN TEACH/AMUSE THEMSELVES VIA THE W
DRIVE/PORTAL
In the new resources our library is listing today we are including a
lot of DVD material that the library had collected over time and which is now being placed on the
W Drive for staff and students to access. In the last few weeks while engaged in adding 33
resources to our schools growing collection of educational film material we thought we might
point out to boys and parents that boys can teach themselves some very interesting things by
watching this material on home computers, school PCs or DEC laptops. Thanks to James Rudd
and David Isaacs for finding the software to record educational broadcast material and for making
it easy for staff to choose curriculum appropriate material for lessons. Parents and boys
are recommended to explore the subject material on the W drive. It would beat watching most
popular TV programs hands down. If bored – try the W drive via the Portal.
