High Notes, Vol 14 No 38, November 29 2013

From the Principal
High Talent
Congratulations to Marcus James (SHS2013) whose major work,
Syncretism, was selected for exhibition at ARTEXPRESS this year. Congratulations to our
Year 8 debating team: Akheed Ahmed Ramzi, Louis Saunders and Hugh Bartley. The boys won the
University of Sydney Union Debating Competition. There were 120 competitors in 34 teams, so their
win was significant. Well done, boys! Brendan Hancox (Year 11) and Madison Wu (Year 10) played in
the Millennium Marching Band at the Schools Spectacular this week. Great job, boys!
Laptop Lockers for Year 9 2014
When students bring their own devices in
2014, there will some boys concerned about the security of their equipment. The school purchased
a number of small lockers specifically designed to accommodate laptops/tablets. These lockers are
available for hire for $5 per year. The token charge is for administration and to cover possible
damage to lockers. Current Year 8 students have first priority. Students supply their own
standard padlocks. The lockers can be hired by registering your name with your Year Adviser. As
soon as the cash register reopens, the first 48 boys to pay their $5 will get possession of the
lockers for 2014. If the demand increases beyond supply, more lockers may be acquired. The
lockers have camera monitoring in the area for added protection.
Reports
All boys in Year 11 have now officially completed their
requirements for Preliminary and collected their reports. There are still too many Year 9 boys
who have not completed Clearance Forms. Mr Barris will be issuing Detention Notices to those boys
during next week if they persist in their failure to comply. Years 7 and 8 boys should have their
reports, please ask your son for his.
Year 7 Mathematics – Problems and Solutions
A concerned parent wrote
to me concerned about the font size of materials supplied to their son. Questions and worked
solutions were reduced and copied and sent home with boys as two or three to a quarto page.
Parents of Year 7 are advised that these materials are supplementary to the actual problems and
solutions located on the student R drive. Students are expected to use the online facility to
access past papers and solutions. Teachers have been trying to help boys by giving them a hard
copy of online materials. Given the difficulties expressed by parents, teachers have been
requested not to provide this service.
Record of Student Achievement
The Record of Student Achievement is a
credential that replaces the School Certificate for school leavers at the end of Year 10. Even
though none of our students will be requiring a Record of Student Achievement, we are still
required to submit to the Board of Studies grades A-E representing individual progress made in
each subject. Grades for Year 10 were submitted on Friday.
Boggabilla Exchange
We were visited by students from Boggabilla Central
School this week. Eight boys and seven girls made the 4-day trip this year. They stayed at the
Outterside Centre and with billets during their stay. It was great that the weather stayed fine
so that they could enjoy the sights. Mr Kay, Ms Powell and Mr Barris organised and managed the
exchange. This program has become a fixture on our calendar and is much anticipated by students
from both schools.
Student Award Scheme
The Student Award Scheme has now closed for points to
be earned for this calendar year. All students will have their points calculated as of this date.
Year 11 Prefect Interns will have their final points calculated and must have qualified to
continue as Interns. The 2014 Scheme commences on December 1.

LOTS OF NEW RESOURCES
Keep an eye on the several display shelves for new
resources. On the advice of our new Library Prefect, William Wu, I have moved the new book
display stand to the entrance of the Library so look there for the latest new books to come out
from processing.
The Popular Books display stand will be filling up with some very interesting Non-Fiction for the
thinkers and considerers. If you want to have a look at this reading material you might like to
aim to skim read if immersing yourself in a large non-fiction book would occupy too much time.
Remember that there is never any compulsion to read a whole book. So keep an eye out for
interesting browsing material on this stand for the next six months or so.
OVERDUES ROUNDUP
There has been an end of the year round up of students
with very overdue materials. I apologise to parents of students whom I contacted and thank them
for their intervention in returning over $1000 worth of resources which may never have arrived
back. WOULD ALL STUDENTS BE AWARE THAT IF THEY HAVE LOST A BOOK THEY CAN REPLACE IT WITH A
BOOK FROM HOME IN GOOD CONDITION THAT WOULD INTEREST OUR BOYS. If you supply the Portal with your
personal email address your overdues can be sent to you more effectively than at present.
PERSONAL EMAIL NEEDED – YOUR PORTAL - YOUR DETAILS - FROM ALL
BOYS
With the beginning of “Bring your own device” next year
communication between your teachers and you will be much easier if you put your personal email
addresses into the Portal – my details. Our Libraries would like to tell you that your
reservations have arrived and to ask boys with reserved books to return them quickly when
finished. We can also automatically tell you when books are overdue. Our Libraries look forward
to being more efficient on your behalf.
HOLIDAY READING AND DVDs
Lots of old favourites - new to our Library - will
be going on to the new fiction stand, the newspaper display table and the spinner in the next few
weeks. Now that exams are over it is time to rev up your reading rate. Being obsessed with books
has very useful advantages such as extending your vocabulary, drilling you with expression and
grammar painlessly and in so doing improving your writing and structuring skills. Be sure to
stock up with 10 books for the holidays. From now on books borrowed are due back when we
return from holidays.
SUCH BEAUTIFULLY BEHAVED AND HARD WORKING SENIOR BOYS
It has been a real
pleasure to have such studious Senior Students in the Junior Library while the Senior Library has
been occupied with exams. Congratulations to the boys and to Mrs Gordon who has trained the boys
to behave appropriately during class time in the Library.

High Tide
Sydney Boys High School Sailing
23rd November 2013
After a Friday night of strong winds, electrical storms and torrential rain, Saturday morning
broke with beautiful clear skies and light winds. Double Bay was littered with sunken and broken
loose yachts.
New skippers York Wang and Louis Ye sailed well in the light NW breeze to record some impressive
first up results, in some cases beating much more experienced sailors in the program. Angelo Yan
and his crew of Daniel Liang sailed consistently in “Southy” to impress the coach and
MIC watching with interest.
Tiger Zhang, helped ably by his crew Long Do, finally showed some of the promise that they are to
be future podium contenders as long as good starts are made in races. His fourth around the top
mark and his defence of his position around the course was pleasing to see. Kai Matsumoto/Kai
Huang and Arthur Chao/Wen Tao Ruan and sailed well again going through the fleet after slow
starts.
Probably most pleasing from the MIC’s perspective was the ease with which the Year 7
sailors had sailed home as skippers. Although the wind was rather light, it gave them a good
chance to grab the helm and indicate their levels of skill, at what can be sometimes an extremely
difficult activity. All Year 7s passed their first “test” successfully and both the
Coach and MIC were seen to be smiling by the time they had made it back to Double Bay Sailing
Club.
Dexter Gordon “the super –sub” again volunteered to skipper when one of the
boys was unable to sail through illness and impressed again with his results in the races and his
commitment to the sailing program. He was helped by Max Wharton-Jones as the crew.
Pre-start manoeuvres by the Saturday yacht racers, always need to be watched carefully by sailors
coming back to Double Bay. Here Sydney High boats on port tack give way to a (much bigger) yacht
on starboard tack. Arthur Chao takes evasive action and gives room for York Wang and Daniel Liang
(in 16) who watch intently and Ethan Tay and Vincent Xu (20) maintain their course, whilst seeing
how things develop.

The school managed to hold out very well against a strong team in the AAGPS, King’s,
especially in the lower age groups to record a great improvement from Term 1, particularly in the
15s sector compared to their records in earlier in the year in the 14s division. The 13s also
managed to play very well and see drastic improvement in their transition to the 14s this time
round. 1st Grade was playing in the Raschke Cup, and 2nd Grade in the Yeend Cup during the
weekends so they did not play this round of the GPS Competition.
In other news, Mr Hayman and the Basketball Committee have also installed 4 brand new rings on
the courts during the weekend, so have fun when balling during the breaks on the new rings, and
hopefully the better equipment would encourage more of you to go back onto the courts during
breaks. As a senior, I’ve been seeing significantly less basketball on the courts from the
seniors recently. Make the new rings an incentive to get back onto the court and enjoy basketball
a lot more casually. I have been unable to provide a High 1st Grade player profile this week due
to exams, but they will come back next week.
Good luck to all players for next week’s game!

Captain of Cricket report:
Due to rain last Saturday, and the one before
that, only 1st and 2nd XI were able to get on against the Scots College. However, during the week
a combined 15s side were successful in their first match of the East Coast Cup; largely thanks to
Vishal Nomula’s 75, and Tully Moffat’s 5-for. With that being his fifth 50 of the
season, Vishal continues to exemplify why he is regarded as one of the best batsmen in the school
at the moment; and will soon result in a call up to the opens sides. Next week the 1st XI leave
for the annual Five Highs carnival in Adelaide, looking to win the tournament this year, after
coming ever so close last year, with a loss to Adelaide on the final day. However, along with the
main trophy we will also play for the Cec Rubie Trophy and Volkov-Kourtesis Cup, which are both
played for during Five Highs with Melbourne High and Adelaide High, respectively. This year also
sees the side strengthened by the return of Agnish Nayak and Oliver Meroni; as High will finally
play boys who have just graduated – yet due to the rules of the tournament, are still
eligible for selection.
Tushaar Garg
1st XI
TSC 228 all out. (T.Garg 3-45 (16), S.Arvind 2-25 (6)) vs High
8/50
After winning the toss, High elected to bowl on a clear morning. Tushaar struck early, as Jesse
took a specky at 2nd slip to have one of the openers on his way in the fourth over. From the
other end, High looked to take Scots by surprise, and did so by opening the bowling with the
deceptive mediums of Jesse Cooper. Although, the real surprise came when Vishnu showed both ends
of the bowling spectrum; varying between long-hop’s and absolute gems, yet had two of the
most destructive batsmen in the GPS back in the pavilion in his first spell. The flair and
versatility of High’s bowling was on display as efforts from Barry Dao, who also took 2
wickets in his lone spell, and Sudarshan Arvind’s tight off-spin eventually had Scots
reeling at 9/129. However, through some smart batting Scots were able to take the last wicket
stand to tea. Following, the break and a slight rain delay, the runs piled on as High were unable
to take the final wicket; resulting in a last wicket stand of 99 before Allen Chen finally had
one caught at mid-wicket. The chase started poorly with two wickets being lost to the first two
balls of the innings, the ever-reliable Vishnu also fell in the following over. At 3/6, High did
not stand a chance of getting through the afternoon against the pace of TSC (with one of their
opening bowlers clocking 135 km/h last year). Some sensible, albeit slow, batting from Tushaar
and Yiutao got High through the first hour, but both soon fell to ridiculously poor shots in such
a situation and left High in dire straits at 7/35. The recently promoted Shashank Nampalli showed
why he can claim a spot in the 1st XI, by seeing through the last half an hour of play unfazed,
alongside Barry, to leave a mammoth task for both batsmen next week.
2nd XI

Another win! This is a huge encouragement for our junior team, especially only
two weeks before heading to Melbourne for Australian Volleyball Schools Cup! To be part of the
largest schools sporting event in the southern hemisphere, the boys are excited! Cheer up and
keep the High Spirit!

1st Grade
An eager Sydney Boys side travelled to King’s in the hope
of challenging last year’s champions. Just as we began to warm up the heavens opened making
the tennis court surface unplayable. We were delayed for a couple of hours, then the weather
cleared up and finally we began to play. However King’s proved to be far too strong for our
side and outplayed us in all three doubles despite respectable efforts. In the singles matches it
was more or less the same situation. King’s were just a bit too good, winning the important
point which in tennis makes all the difference at the end of the day. Not the greatest of starts
to the season but one that we can certainly build on next week and then next year with what can
be expected to be a far stronger High side.
Adam Smagarinsky
First Grade Captain
2nd Grade
Second Grade played their first match against King’s for
the first game of the competition season. Unfortunately, it was a poor start for us as we did
suffer a bad loss. The matches were postponed due to the wet weather and it was tough to maintain
the concentration. In the doubles, Calvin and Ervin along with Junjie and Wangyu held up well
against King’s for a few games but lost concentration and lost in straight sets. In the
singles, Junjie played well, losing the first set 2-6 but coming back to fight for the second
set, only losing by a small margin. Second Grade was off to a slow start due to obstacles such as
exams but will catch up in our tennis as they are over.

16 As
After some terrible weather, the 16As were lucky to play on Saturday.
The day turned out fine and clear and by then we were pumped to play after missing out on playing
in the previous week which was rained out. This week, our opponents King’s looked to start
with a win to reinforce their previous win in our last encounter. We got off to a very evenly
skilled pair of doubles matches with our A1-A3 as Garry Huang and Preetham Kadappu starting
strongly winning a hard fought 6-4 win. However, on the other side, our A2-A4 with Anthony Yu and
Alex Liang began with quite a struggle going down 3-0 within a few minutes of play. But through
some great teamwork and impressive individual play, we managed to fight back, but it just
wasn’t enough, going down to a very close 4-6 loss.
Our fortunes turned in the singles with impressive wins from both Garry (A1) and Preetham (A3),
winning 6-2 and 6-4 respectively, giving us an edge over King’s for the final result.
Unfortunately, As reserve, Thomas Nguyen lost 6-3 for our 3rd singles match and, now the points
were getting tighter. Anthony played a hard-fought match with each not willing to lose service
games. But in the end, Anthony just fell short and lost 6-4.
The overall result just a single game in favour of High with a total of 29-28. A well-deserved
win this week, boys, and yet another encouraging result. Next week, we face Scots where we hope
to build on our success.
Anthony Yu
15 As
The match against King’s was the first one without our captain,
Wanyu Tang. He has been promoted to Second Grade. Congratulations, Wanyu! With his success, the
remaining players were determined to show their worth. Everything was with us: the weather and
the never-ending support of our parents. Everyone tried their best, putting up a formidable fight
against King’s. Ting Li (A4) was able to win 6-4. Despite all our efforts, that was our
only win of the day. There were some close losses, with myself losing in a tie-breaker 5-7 and
the first doubles pair going down 4-6. However, the only thing that truly mattered was the fact
that everyone had tried their best. With that in mind, the 15As will be heading into the next
week with more confidence.

also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9662 9300 and dial
“1” for the absentee line.
If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris,
Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office
immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the
name, date and roll class of your son
printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main
Office before he leaves the school.
If your son has early leave due to a medical appointment you are required to produce a note from
the provider.
