From the Principal

High Talent
At the Head of the Parramatta Regatta last weekend, High won the schoolboy coxed quad. Gold medals were awarded to Tom Luo, Steve Comninos, Shawn Noronha, Ray Fang and Kenneth Liu. Congratulations, boys! Well done to Sherman Du (SHS 2013) who had his film Presence selected for exhibition in OnStage / OnScreen early next year. Marcus James (SHS 2013) has had his artwork Syncretism selected for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS. At the Open High School next month Elbert Ly and Tin Wu (SHS 2013) will be honoured for their achievements in Japanese Continuers (=3rd) and Japanese Beginners (3rd.) at the HSC. Great job, boys! Edward Belokopytov (Year 9) ranked 5th in the ASX Share Market Game. Well done!

Scholarships On Offer
SBHS offers only two scholarships/bursaries – the Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship and the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation Scholarship. All enrolled or enrolling students are eligible to apply.

The Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship is a one-year credit on the school account for $1,500. The Selection Criteria covers talented boys in an academic area or co-curricular endeavour. Good all-rounders qualify as do students with special needs – financial or otherwise. There are many boys in the school who would make good candidates for this award. I urge them to take the trouble to download and complete the application form. The Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation Inc Scholarship is a two-year award with a credit at the school account for $1,500 for each Year – 11 and 12. Only boys enrolled or enrolling in Year 11 are eligible to apply. The criteria for this scholarship are different. It has an emphasis on a prior record of service to others, to the school and / or the community. Boys with initiative, compassion and leadership skills are invited to apply.

Look for the details on the website . Do not assume that you are not worthy or eligible. Applications close on November 29.

Orientation Day
Inclement weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the staff, students and parents who worked tirelessly to make the orientation / enrolment process as informative and efficient as possible. Relocating exhibits and co-curricular stalls to the gymnasium was new but seemed a popular choice. The enrolment processes were completed by 18:40 thanks to the SAS staff. Less than four hours to process over 200 new students seems a very acceptable amount of time. The Great Hall was full for the assembly 4:00-4:45. Many new students and their parents were shown around the school by Prefects. These boys also did a great job assisting the SAS staff in the Common Room as they processed applications. Volunteers who attended the various activity stalls did a good job too, as did the parents who gave up their time. Thank you also to the P & C for providing refreshments. Mr Aldous organised the day very well. All staff and parents responded to our wet weather precaution with a minimum of fuss. Thank you to everyone involved.

Music Awards Assembly
The Music Awards Assembly was held on Tuesday. My address to the assembly is reprinted below:

"Special guests, members of the P & C Music Committee, musicians, tutors, staff and students, welcome to our annual Music Awards Assembly. The Performance Music Program is an important one at high. We have a traditional Marching Band that features each Anzac Day. We have numerous ensembles that have opportunities for public performances at assemblies, in front of their parents and peers. We have musicians who represent the school at school and public functions, in Performing arts Unit ensembles, at Shopping Centres and at private functions, such as the string ensemble at Government House.

"The assembly today has two purposes. First, due recognition is paid to the regular participation by many students in the ensembles of their choice or for which they were selected on merit. As well, the great majority of these participants practised privately with tutors during the season to maintain their performance standard. In terms of hours spent on an activity, music is as demanding as any sport.  Second, we acknowledge those special performers and scholars who have attained excellence in their musical accomplishments. The performance component of the academic music program is enhanced by the participation of these scholars in the performance music program. It is also inspiring for young musicians to be able to be able to perform alongside their more experienced fellow students.

"I want to thank the Music teachers, Ms Lim, Ms Miller and Ms Kim, as well as our professional tutors, for the time they have devoted to training ensembles for performance. Music is important because of the way it frees the soul and releases tension and stress. It also complements ceremonial, celebratory and social events. We often call upon music staff to provide ensembles or individuals to perform for us or others associated with High, usually at short notice. Musical performance is great for brain development, strengthening left and right hemisphere communication. As a consequence, performing music is good for your personal growth and mental health. I encourage boys to continue with their music, even as support players in ensembles. You can have fun, make friends and accomplish something authentic by joining an ensemble.

"We have a program of joint musical / drama productions with SGHS which has enriched the performance opportunities for musicians in both schools.. The tradition of multiple Encore nominations continues this year. High is a great school in which to study music to HSC level.

"Thank you to the Music Staff and Ms Louise Graul for their work in administering the music program this year. The Music Committee raises valuable funds through parking activities. This money is used to provide large instruments for our program and to assist musicians with music scholarships. I thank the Music Committee on your behalf for their support. High produces many outstanding musicians. I congratulate those boys being recognised and awarded today and urge as many boys as possible to engage in musical training and performance. "

‘Bring Your Own Device’ Update

Launching Next Week

In August, the Sydney Boys High School Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program was instigated. A letter was sent to all Year 8 parents and an advertisement placed in High Notes outlining the program and inviting your feedback.

As a reminder: In 2014 students in Year 9 will be expected to bring their own computing device to school every day. The BYOD Program is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances.

Program Launch: 22 November 2013

The program has been finalised and will launch next week. We will have the following information available:

• Final versions of policy documents
• Our recommended devices and their specifications
• A purchasing portal for recommended devices
• Further instructions for obtaining and using a device

All our recommended devices will have onsite warranty where warranty issues can be fixed by a technician at school. Additionally, accidental damage protection will be available as an option on these devices.

All our recommended devices meet the Device Specification of the BYOD program and feature solid state disks.

Orientation Day Thank You

Many thanks to the students who participated in Orientation Day and helped our 2014 students and families feel welcome. It was great to see the large number of both junior and senior students become involved. The school tours were popular again this year and our tour guides did a wonderful job.

I would especially like to thank the senior students who assisted our Administrative Staff in and around the Common Room. Your help was invaluable and allowed us to move through the enrolment process as quickly as possible. Thank you for doing such a fantastic job. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Mr Con Barris, Mr Mick Aldous, Ms Madeleine Rigby, Mr Evan Higgins, our Program Managers & our MICs for organising the students and activities.

Thank you also to the staff and students who assisted with the set up for the day’s events and to our P&C parents who provided refreshments throughout the afternoon for our new families.

A special thank you must go to our Administrative Staff. Thank you for your hard work during the long weeks of preparation and your fantastic efforts on what is our busiest day of the year. All this while dealing with sick students, lost property, absences, lost forms, late arrivals, parents, phones and the numerous other tasks that are carried out by SASS during the school day! ENCORE NOMINATIONS 2013

USA TOUR- EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
The Music Department is planning a Music Tour to the USA (New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Francisco) in 2014/2015. There will be a music committee meeting this term, early December 2013 (tbc) for any parents and students who are interested. Expressions of interest forms will be available soon.

Well done to everyone who participated in the Game. Over the Game period, the market was fairly positive which is reflected in the numbers below:

• The All Ordinaries (XAO) was up 7%
• All sectors ended up in positive territory, the best performing sector was financials up 9.26%
• The worst performing sector was materials up 3.06%
• The top stock was Bega Cheese up 50.34% - not surprisingly all of the National and State 1st place winners had Bega Cheese in their portfolios.
• 67.26% of players finished in profit

Blessed are the cheese makers! Several of our students indulged in the cheese platter of Bega Cheese but not Edward, unfortunately, who led the competition into the closing stages only to be usurped in the final stages by some less lactose intolerant rivals and sadly Edward did not get his just desserts! A great effort to finish fifth in the national standings and lead the Yr 9 cohort who once again performed better than many senior students. The ASX Game is compulsory for Year 9 Commerce students and the game has been played with great enthusiasm.

From the Canteen

The Annual General Meeting of the Canteen Committee will be held on Friday 13 December in the boardroom at 3.00pm.  All positions will be declared vacant.  We are in need of some new support members for the committee.   If you would like to contribute to this committee, please come along and join us. 

We are very happy to be able to donate to the P&C our second instalment of $40,000.00 for the year.  This is money raised from the profits of the canteen and can only be made possible with the invaluable assistance of parent volunteers.  We have one of the few remaining school canteens which is not privately owned and therefore all profits are returned to the school to be spent on worthwhile projects which benefit our sons.

This week saw a greatly improved result against Shore from last season, with the 14s division performing exceptionally well, having only the 14A team lose in a very close match against Shore which first grade came and watched! Opens also had close games, with 3rd and 4th grade losing narrowly on a 4 point difference in games. High 2nd Grade saw co-captain Charlie Shi knock down an impressive 20 points, while High 1st Grade pulled off a massive win carried by High’s star player Mitchell Flynn.

Jack Hutchison

This season Jack has been an integral part of 1st Grade, starting as the power forward of the team. He is an energetic player on both sides of the court, being particularly vocal on the defensive end he brings up team spirit. Coming off two successful seasons in the 15s High CHS Knockout team, Jack looks to bring his extensive experience and knowledge to the High 1st Grade side.

1st Grade
Hoping to further last week’s positive results, Sydney Boys hosted Shore. Yet this was not to be the case. Adam and Josh implemented their tie-break training to win the first set in their doubles match, yet with a change of momentum lost the second set. However, they fought extremely hard in the super tie-break to be very unlucky in an 11-13 loss. Overall 7-6 0-6 11-13. While in the other two doubles we found it hard to gather any momentum being comfortably beaten. In the singles, luck still failed to be on our side with disappointing results across the board. However Adam had another interesting match winning the first set yet was unable to quickly finish off the match and his opponent was able to find his rhythm and win the match. So quite a disappointing result this week however it is still the trial season and is all about learning and improving for the actual season. And if a positive can be taken away from this Saturday it is that Shore may underestimate our ability next time we challenge them and hopefully the score can be somewhat reversed.

First Grade Captain

2nd Grade
High played Shore at Northbridge for another round of the trial season. Although the conditions were hot and windy, Second Grade held out with great singles matches. In all the doubles and through knowledge of previous doubles, it was evident that a lot more doubles practice was needed as we were yet again faced with disappointing scores. In the singles, the number 1 and 2, Richard and Calvin gained promising victories, dominating their opponents and winning in straight sets. Ervin played a tough three setter, gaining the opportunity to win in the third set, but could not finish off and lost to his extremely consistent opponent. Second Grade is showing rapid improvement in the singles matches and soon will be able to claim victory. In the doubles, it is just a matter of time before we master doubles play to start claiming more doubles matches.

Junior Results

U16s Melbourne Exchange
A tennis competition was added recently to the three day sporting exchange program between Sydney High and Melbourne High. The format of the competition was to have a team consisting of four Year 9 players from each school to play each other. On the first day it was the ranked seeds playing each other, with unfortunate results ending with Melbourne on a 3-1 match lead. Sydney High only managed to produce one win on that day with Garry Huang winning a three set match 4-6 6-1 11-9. The second day consisted of the doubles, on which our 1&2 doubles lost 8-6 and the 3&4 doubles won 8-4, ending the day with Melbourne leading 4-2. On the last day we played singles matches against the student we billeted. On this day High was able to produce the most wins with the Adam overpowering his opponent in a three setter 6-4 1-6 11-9, Ervin winning with a score of 7-5 4-6 10-5 and Anthony securing his win 7-6 (7-3) 6-1. With the competition ending in a 5 all tie, both tennis teams went down to Coogee beach for a swim before seeing Melbourne off. The sporting experience was great and we hope this tennis exchange can be continued annually.

U14/15 Top 4 Tennis competition
This Saturday we were entered into the Under 14s and 15s Tennis competition among other GPS schools. The competition was held at St Josephs and during the hottest weather we’ve had since the start of the tennis season. We received an insight in to the skills of the opposition teams that we have no yet played against. Wanyu managed to finish an impressive 3rd overall in the A1 and A2 pool winning the first and second rounds however, losing in the third round. From there, he defeated a Grammar player to finish 3rd. Our other players all performed well. However, there were not many notable performances. Overall, the competition gave us an opportunity to “enhance our own style of tennis”, as quoted from Frank Zhang the former 1st grade captain who came along to provide us advice and tips.

High Cricket

Captain of Cricket report:
For most Group 1 sides, last week was the first day of a two-day clash against the King’s school, with much work to be done in most grades to put High in good stead. Although, with the forecasts of torrential rain in the coming days, many teams will feel hard done by. Once again, the 16As become the feature of the article as they scored the most runs in an innings since 2005 with 296 against TKS. On Thursday and Friday, a combined 15s/16s side captained by Eli Hall returned the Louis Barberis Cup to its rightful home, in High’s foyer cabinets. Melbourne High have retained the Barberis Cup repeatedly since a spirited bowling effort, spearheaded by Oli Meroni (who took 6/23) in 2010, last saw High win the Barberis Cup. The 1st XI version of this rivalry is played at the annual 5 Highs carnival for the Cec Rubie Trophy, which was won by High last year. Over the weekend it was also great to see the well-renowned Chris Kourtesis return to McKay to watch the 1st XI, exemplifying the spirit which High cricket instils within one, as many Old Boys also watched on last Saturday.

High 93 all out. (V. Avudainayagam 30, T.Garg 23) Vs Kings 2/96 (L.De Fonseka 2/25)
High won the toss and elected to bat on a surprisingly nippy McKay wicket. The experienced Raunak Sura was back in the pavilion early after some good seam bowling from the King’s School. At the other end Gautham saw through the new ball and carrying on after being hit in the chest, only to soon be cleaned up by a loopy offie. This saw Vishnu meet Tushaar in the middle, and the pair set themselves for big totals, playing defensively in the first hour then opening up just before lunch. By then the pair had put on 45 runs for the third wicket, before Tushaar was caught at slip 2nd last ball before lunch. Following the short break for the greatest lunch in all of Sydney, chaos struck as High lost 4/6 to, exposing a young middle order to a the swinging ball – High were soon reduced to 6/70. Vishnu, after momentarily stabilising the innings, fell soon after to a mistimed pull-shot. Although Jesse attempted to reinvigorate the innings with his signature quick running and deft shot selection, High were bundled out for 93. In reply The King’s School looked to take the attack to opener Lasith De Fonseka who went tit-for-tat bowling with much aggression and pace to have both openers out before tea. After the break Tushaar changed to around the wicket and had a chance put down at first slip immediately, then another tough catch dropped at point the following over. Although already having conceded first innings points, High must fight for pride next week and reflect on their inability to capitalise on starts; with such potential going to little avail without much needed application.

2nd XI
High 105 all out. (S.Nampalli 63) vs Kings 3/150 (J.Malhotra 3/45)
Sydney High was put in to bat, and got off to a slow start as the temperature increased rapidly. Throughout the innings wickets fell consistently and High weren’t able to create long standing partnerships. However, there were some highlights throughout the innings. A brilliant batting performance by S Nampalli saw him reach an unbeaten 63 runs. He was supported throughout the innings by N Selvakumar, who played a superb innings, boosting High’s total with a quick 19 run blast. At the conclusion of High’s final wicket they had reached a total of 105, with King’s needing 106 runs to secure victory. The King’s opening pair put on a tremendous stand to reach the total with no wickets lost. But High played with spirit and hit back with a succession of wickets skilfully taken by left arm spinner, Jayesh and tight bowling by right arm quick, Michael. At the end of day 1 he finished with 3 wickets and King’s were 3 – 160. All in all the High boys played with great perseverance, spirit and skill

Our openers lasted a few overs before a loose shot saw the first wicket fall, then the boat steadied and both batsmen played sensibly until another wicket fell. Tahmeed and Yoshi then created a partnership of 50. However, Yoshi fell early after drinks. Wickets then kept on falling, with the innings closed for a total of 116. We went into bowl and took a while to get the first wicket, with a brilliant show of fielding saw a run out taken by Tahmeed and Jason Lim. Rick then came on and bowled the opener on his first ball of the over that saw the openers scared by his pace. 2 more wickets followed for Shreyas and Tahmeed, however this wasn’t enough and Shore were able to run down the score with 6 overs to spare.

High won the toss and elected to bat on what promised to be a very bouncy wicket with long boundaries. Disaster struck early as opening batsmen Ian fell for a platinum duck on the first ball of the match. Finding ourselves at 3/7 early on, the task was once again set for Captain and Vice-Captain Thomas and Peter to bring us to a respectable total. A solid thirty run partnership was made before the tail wagged with spin bowler Anthony making nine runs not out. After setting a low total we knew our fielding had to be tight and bowling needed to be full and accurate. All bowlers were up to the task, taking a multitude of wickets and threatening the opposition right until the end. There was much controversy with two fifty-fifty calls going High's way and a feeling of euphoria when square leg fielder Anthony took a diving catch that may not be rivalled in the next decade. Results aside, we left the field confident; knowing that we defended our low total well and that if we play that team later in the season, we can win the game.

High won the toss and elected to bat. We got off to a pretty solid start batting very well throughout the day. A key performance was Peter Yu's 90 runs, which carried the team near 300 runs. Also, James Pope's quick 62, maintaining a strike rate near 100, was another highlight of the day. Overall, Sydney Boys batted very well and has a very good total to defend for the upcoming Saturday.

High bowled well again having lost the toss. Being down to ten men for the second week in a row put a strain on the field and King's got off to a great start. We continued to drop catches and make simple errors in the field allowing their batsmen to make big scores. However we improved later on and managed to bowl King's out with 17 overs to spare. Although the total could be smaller, we did well to keep it to a manageable total

SHS Rowing

Head of the Parramatta Results –

Last Saturday five SBHS crews rowed a gruelling 4.5km time trial race down time the Parramatta River, along with 91 crews from many clubs and schools. We had pleasing results with all High crews passing other boats down the river. Congratulations to all rowers, particularly the School 1st Coxed Quad Scull winning gold medals. Results are below.

• Boat Naming Cocktail Party - Saturday 16 Nov –  (please see invitation and booking form in High Notes). We are naming 5 boats in recognition of outstanding contributors to the High Rowing Program. Ollie Wilson (2002), Cam Lyon (1963), Bernie Desmond, Charles and Fabienne Ovadia, and The High Club are to have boats named in their honour.  Hope you can join us on the evening to enjoy the celebration.
• GPS Scots College 100Years Regatta at SIRC, Penrith - Saturday 23 Nov – All Year 9 Quads, Year 10 Eights, and School Eights will compete in this regatta. This will require a very early start, as the boys need to rig their boats before racing begins at 8am.
• Melbourne Excursion and Head of the Yarra - Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 Nov – Year 10 Eights are travelling to Melbourne to row with Melbourne Boys High and race in the annual Australian classic event, Head of the Yarra, on the Saturday.
• Riverview Gold Cup at Lane Cove - Saturday 30 Nov - Senior and Y9 crews will row from the school sheds to the regatta course, and all parents are invited to St Ignatius College to watch the races.
• Reindeer Regatta - Saturday 7 Dec – Selected Y9 and Y8 rowers will be competing in this regatta at SIRC Penrith.
• SHS Shed Race - Saturday 14 Dec – This is our end of year event at the High Sheds. All crews compete in the handicapped ‘Shed Race’ with the finish line in front of our shed. A delicious barbecue brunch is served for all rowers and families to enjoy under the marquees by the river.
