From the Principal
High Talent
Congratulations to our athletics team. At the NSWCHS Athletics
Championship, SBHS won the coveted Kippax Cup for Champion Boys School. This was another great
team achievement. Kevin Ni (Year 10) has been invited to be a member of this year’s AOIC
Informatics School of Excellence, to be held in Canberra in December. Just 27 students in
Australia were invited. Well done, Kevin! The U15 CHS Knockout Basketball team has qualified
again for the final round of 8 tournaments to be played in Terrigal next week. Good luck, boys!
At the young Australian Art Awards, Gordon Yuan (Year 9) won a gold medal as runner up for his
entry, entitled A Midnight Read. Great job, Gordon!
UMAT Test Results and coaching
Studies undertaken recently in Australia and
New Zealand, indicate there are few if any benefits to be gained from engaging in coaching prior
to sitting the UMAT test. The UMAT consists of components: interview, logical reasoning,
understanding people and non-verbal reasoning. Under conditions of sustained practice there was
found to be a small benefit for selective school students in the non-verbal reasoning component.
Coached students appear to fail more often than non-coached students during their undergraduate
courses. My advice is that parents would be better off encouraging their sons to spend the
planned extra time that they intended to set aside for UMAT coaching on deepening their
understanding of their HSC courses.
Sydney Boys High Sailing Committee AGM
This meeting was held last Saturday
at Double Bay Sailing Club. President Nick Evans, Treasurer Jojiro Matsumoto, and MIC Graham
Moody presented reports. The sailing program is popular, with 45 sailors registered. Racing is
being held on both Saturday morning and in the afternoon in a teams racing format to allow two
uses of the twelve boats in the High fleet. Sailing Coach, Adam South, requested a continuation
of the boat purchasing program as a few boats were becoming expensive to maintain. The High Club
made a substantial donation to assist the purchasing program this year. The ̽»¨ÊÓƵ
Sailing Association Financial Statement was tabled and discussed. The Foundation loan repayment
is well ahead of schedule. The meeting agreed to partly fund an additional chase boat to be owned
by Double Bay Sailing Club. Access to two vessels will add considerably to the safety and
flexibility of the sailing program in 2014. The sport is in a healthy state – well
organised and managed.
Selective Schools Conference – Part 1
Our first presenter (Julie
Ross, Chatswood) analysed the differences in approach to education in China and Australia,
particularly around rote learning and absorbing teacher directed concepts and content. There is a
questioning of this approach in China where creativity is low in comparison to Western countries,
as measured by patents being registered annually.
Dr Turner (Hornsby Girls) gave a detailed discussion on perfectionism in gifted students.
Perfectionism has good and bad effects. He recommended that selective schools learn how to
channel adaptive perfectionist behaviour and minimise maladaptive behaviour. Imperfection needs
to be modelled so that students understand that it is both normal and acceptable to make
mistakes.
Laurence Derks (DEC – IT) provided some useful information about BYOD. DEC links and sites
include:
and He stressed that Wireless access from DEC
wouldn’t include 3G and that only 5GHz. enabled devices would be compatible with it. Google
Apps will be available to students soon. Microsoft Office 365 will be available for personal
machines too. Students will get Adobe CS6 Master Suite by DEC arrangement with Adobe.
Parents are advised to keep themselves informed about BYOD by accessing DEC and school website
information and by attending closely to device specification information provided by the
school.

Sydney Boys High School Sailing
2nd November 2013
This Saturday started off with the smoke from the bushfires covering the harbour and with only a
little bit of NW wind. With the AGM meeting kicking off in the clubhouse and the sound of fog
horns from ships and Bradleys Head, we launched our boats to sail to Rose Bay. Conditions there
were very similar with the light NW wind just enough to start a race.
However, as soon as the race started, the wind died down to a whisper. We only had time for one
race, although Sydney High sailors managed to get some strong results, with Daniel Fang and
Angelo Yan both sailing into top ten positions.
After the wind had died, we headed into the Rose Bay beach and waited for news about the Teams
Racing. Due to the smoky conditions and the lack of wind, Teams racing was again called off, with
the wind from the NNE appearing just as the twelve boat tow back to Double Bay commenced. Overall
it was a difficult Saturday with poor wind and conditions.

High Cricket
Captain of Cricket report:
Last week High came up against the mighty St
Joseph’s College, and in every age group, showed there is much work to be done if this is
to be a successful season. The 16As continue to break records, becoming the first group 1 side
since 2009 to win three consecutive games. They are also the first age group side to beat Joeys
since 2008. However, in other age groups and Opens, Joeys dominated to once again show their
prowess in cricket. Once again, it was encouraging to see junior players staying back after their
games to watch the 1st XI. In other news, the side that will tour Adelaide in week 9 for the
annual Five Highs tournament has also been released on the cricket website, which is:
Tushaar Garg
1st XI
St Josephs 4/244 DEF High 84 all out.
High started well with the quicks working hard to keep both openers on their toes early on.
However, five dropped catches in the first session defined Highs bowling effort with the openers
reaching 0/130, before Sagar finally got the break through. Had any of those catches been taken,
High would have been in a commanding position as the rest of the Joeys order only managed another
100 runs in about 30 overs; attributable to a spirited effort with the ball by spinners Yiutao
and Allen; as well as Raunak and Vishnu also chiming in for a wicket a-piece. Sudarshan also
bowled very economically, to the content of Dr Jaggar, who looked on from the stands. In chase of
a mammoth total Gautham fell early to a sluggish pull shot, and Vishnu, who looked ever so good
on his birthday, fell soon after to some lazy running between the wickets. Although Yiutao and
Tushaar managed to get some momentum going with a 45-run stand for the 3rd wicket, as soon as
both departed High lost 5/11 to eventually be bundled out for 84. Joeys will be the team to beat
in the 1st XI competition this year, having already won the T20 comp. High must go into next
week’s two-day clash against Kings with a renewed attitude, and ready to win.
2nds – St Josephs 6/260 DEF High 38 all out.
4ths – High 8/135 (32) (T.Hossain 40, R.Saha 29) DEF BY St Josephs 6/136

Sydney High won the toss and elected to bowl. Beginning extremely strongly with an attacking
field set and lots of talk, the wickets began to flow quickly as opening bowler Anant took a
double wicket maiden in only his third over. Followed shortly by Mike’s two quick wickets,
Sydney High were sitting pretty, having Joeys at 5/75 at drinks, an outstanding improvement on
our first two games.
With spin pair Thomas and Anthony resuming the bowling, Joeys lost three wickets and if not for
the half century made by one of their batsmen, their innings was all but over. Eventually, the
Sydney High 5ths reached a personal milestone, steamrolling the St Joseph's batsmen who were all
out in the 29th over. Unfortunately, our batting was not up to par and a game that could well
have been ours to win slipped out of reach as our top order crumbled to accurate, full Joeys
bowling. Special mentions to bowlers Thomas and Anant on their concise overs; and William Chow
for his magnificent fielding which included an extremely difficult take at deep mid-on.
16As -
High 3/199 (32) (V. Kashyap 93 [112], V. Nomula 32 [41], S.
Nampalli 22 [28]) DEF St Josephs 8/166 (32) (J. Pope 2/15 [6], V. Kashyap 2/25 [5], P. Yu 2/30
[4])
High won the toss and elected to bat, after a splendid first session with Vivek and Vishal
batting the first half of the innings out, High was 0/80 after the first session. Unfortunately,
Vishal was bowled for 32. However, Vivek stayed solid. Shashank then came in to score a quick
fire 22 Followed by Karthik who scored a strong 19 not out. In the last over after having an
amazing innings, Vivek was caught on 93. Some great batting performances left High at a solid
total of 199.High's bowling was tight and the fielding was good as well. However, Joey's were
able to pick the gaps and get a respectable total of 1/69 after the first session. High's bowling
and fielding was great in the second session with some outstanding performances by Peter getting
a two wicket maiden and most of the bowlers taking wickets. With some exceptional fielding by
High, the game slowly slipped away from Joeys and by the end of the innings Joeys scored a total
of 8/166.
16Bs – High 57 all out. (18) (T. Khan 19) DEF BY St Jospehs 4/356 (32)
15As –
St Josephs 167 all out. (E.Hall 3/31, R.Hossain 1/21) DEF
High (L.Saunders 42, V.Rajaan 25)
After losing the toss, High bowled first, and were unable to find consistency – bowling too
many loose deliveries early on. The free flow of runs continued throughout the Joeys innings,
attributable to a lack of players. In reply High got off to a slow but solid start, and although
they batted well; were unable to reach the opposition’s total. Special mention must go to
Louis and Vyaas who guided the chase.

This week High played to near perfection, losing just two games this week against St
Joseph’s College. Congratulations to all teams that have won this round!
Meanwhile, we have another player profile to present to you from the 1st Grade team:
Eugene Lee
So far this season Eugene has been a powerhouse defensively. A superior athlete, Eugene is able
to run down even the smoothest of dribblers full court and stop them from scoring. Scoring his
first points in first grade last week he contributed statistically in all facets of the game.
Eugene ensures everyone is working in the weights room and is an integral member of the side.

1st Grade
A great step forward and a good sign for the coming
weeks.
High hosted St Joseph’s for the fourth round of the trial season.
The conditions were made quite interesting due to the back burning occurring on the day. And as
usual the match began with doubles. Josh and Adam looked for their first doubles win however we
did not achieve the desired results and were outplayed by our opponent. Eddy and Matthew also
troubled their opponents but were unlucky. While Carl and James continued their dominance in
doubles carrying the team with a well fought three set doubles win. Adam made his much needed
debut singles win. Matthew again played solid singles to win his match as well as Carl who
continued to be a driving force in the team. This left the total match scores at four matches a
piece with only Eddy’s match left on the court. A must win. Eddy won his first set however
was unable to close out the match but was still a promising show by Eddy. Overall this was an
excellent performance from the team as a whole and a good sign for the upcoming season.
Adam Smagarinsky
First Grade Captain
2nd Grade
2nd Grade played St. Joseph’s at the opposition’s
courts. Although we were playing last season’s victors, we held up as best as we could and
seized two singles matches. Our doubles did not turn out well, losing all three but gaining
experience for future doubles matches. In the singles, Richard and Junjie were the ones to seize
victory. Richard played an extremely good three setter, returning all balls no matter how hard
and won 4-6 6-1 7-5 through consistency. Junjie continued his winning streak from last week and
also won in a three setter, 6-3 3-6 7-5 through sticking to the game plan of being consistent.
2nd grade had showed vast improvement from last season but overall, needs much improvement.
Calvin Zhou
Second Grade Captain
3rd Grade
Looking forward to play against St Joseph’s for the fourth
round of the trial season, Sydney High’s third grade team played the matches of our lives.
Even at 3-3, first seed Andrew Cheung managed to fight off his tough opponent to seal the match
with a convincing 6-3 win. Playing as second seed, I also managed to conceive a 6-3 win. The day
got even better with Daniel Zhang and Andrew Tayeh both winning their singles matches with an
impressive score of 6-1. The thirds also won both doubles matches with Andrew C and I prevailing
6-3. Daniel and Andrew T also managed to edge through their doubles match winning in a closely
contested tiebreak 7-6 (6). This ultimately sealed the deal for the Sydney High third grade team
with a huge 6-0 win over the home team on the weekend. Although it has been a long time coming
for a team to win all matches on the weekend, it was both dedication at training and team effort
that carried the thirds to an unforgettable victory.
James Lin
4th Grade
Sydney High’s 4th grade team played St Joseph’s
College, showing excellent perseverance by coming home with a victory in the scorching
conditions. The day started off with the doubles matches, where High set off to a slow start. Our
number 1 doubles pair, Misha Libman and Pete Upatising, was just edged out of a close game in a
5-6 loss with 4-7 in the tiebreak. The number 2 doubles pair, Leonard Mah and Angus Wu, suffered
an unfortunate 3-6 loss with many unforced errors. Yet, unfazed, the SBHS players fought back and
dominated the singles matches, with Misha Libman, Pete Upatising and Leonard Mah winning 6-3, 6-4
and 6-3 respectively. However the highlight of the matches was Angus Wu outclassing his opponent
in a stunning 6-1 victory. Overall, our team’s effort reflected our dedication in training
to secure our victory but there are still many areas where we could improve.
Leonard Mah
5th Grade
On the weekend Sydney High’s 5th grade tennis team played
against St. Joseph’s College in a tight series of games. After finally having all our
players back after numerous injuries and inconveniences, 5th grade looked to be prepared for the
day’s matches. Despite this William Du and Gordon Qian (5th1 and 5th2) slipped up in their
doubles match losing 0-6. While the day’s singles matches proved to be more fruitful,
William and Gordon still inevitably lost their matches 2-6 and 4-6 respectively. However all was
not lost with Kevin Ni and Sunny Xu (5th3 and 5th 4) managing to scrape a doubles victory 6-4. To
add to this both players crushed the opposition in their singles matches, winning 6-1 and 6-3
respectively.
Jason Garrett
16 As
16A's: This week the 16As played Joeys at home. A minor change in the
makeup of the team was initially confusing but the team adapted well to eventually win the tie.
The A1 doubles with Garry Huang and Preetham Kadappu was a close match-up which unfortunately
ended in a loss 5-6 (3-7). A2 doubles featuring Anthony Yu and Thomas Nguyen was also a
competitive game but resulted in a 4-6 loss. However, the singles rubbers proved to be much more
successful for the team. Garry Huang in A1 played well and won in a tiebreaker 6-5 (7-4.) Anthony
Yu was defeated by a strong Joey’s A2, losing 4-6. Alex Liang in A3 convincingly won his
rubber 6-2 while Thomas Nguyen playing in A4 won in an extremely close tiebreaker 6-5 (11-9.)
With a great improvement in our singles plays this week, the 16As were able to narrowly defeat
Joeys 31-30 overall.
Thomas Nguyen
15 As
St Joseph’s College was our opponent this week and we played at
their courts at Hunters Hill, which made for an early morning for our A team. There was thick fog
earlier in the day which fortunately cleared as the day progressed. The stand out performance for
this term was unleashed as our A1, A2 doubles completely dominated our opponents. Defeating them
in under thirty minutes, we won 6-0. This opened a positive attitude to the day. The A3, A4
doubles was very close on the other hand. The opposition played defensively and we couldn’t
finish attacking without a few unforced errors. We lost in a close tiebreak 6-5, with a tiebreak
score of 6-8. Singles matches started shortly after their coach taught them a few tactics for
singles. A1 singles started off much disorientated for Wanyu and the opponent pushed to a 3-0
lead. Wanyu managed to bring the score closer until the tiebreak where he won, 7-5. George our A2
pushed his opponent fiercely. However, he made numerous unforced errors on his forehand and lost
6-4. Charlie and Ting faced off with more experienced opponents and both lost with scores of 6-1,
6-1 respectively. This week’s match results give us a better insight as to what to expect
in the GPS season. Hopefully, we can learn from this week’s match and next time put a more
skilled effort towards our tennis.
