High Notes, Vol 14 No 33, October 25 2013

From the Principal
High Talent
Christopher Chen (Year 11) was awarded a High Distinction and
gold medal in the Chemistry Olympiad – a very significant achievement! Not to be outdone,
Edric Wang was awarded the same in the Physics Olympiad. No one can recall when High boys
achieved at this level in two competitions simultaneously! Congratulations to our House Captains
for 2014. The student leaders elected were: Eedy - Andrew Dao; Fairland - Andrew Tayeh; McKay -
Naga Koneru; Ruby - Joshua Leo; Saxby - Tushaar Garg; and Torrington - Michael
Hamilton. I hope all students will respond well to the leadership in activities by these student
representatives.
Year 9, 2014 Mentors
In 2014, there will be 30 new enrolments into Year 9.
It is always difficult to transition to a new school, so we need people to help us make the
orientation to High as smooth as possible. In past years, Year 8 boys have volunteered to act as
Peer Mentors for the incoming students. Some High boys already know students enrolling in Year 9
as they have played with them in a sports team or went to the same primary school, or live in the
same suburb. Some new boys have had visits to the school or have had holiday training sessions
with our boys. The role of Peer Mentor is not very onerous. We need boys familiar with the
routines and policies of High to share these with new boys and to act as a contact when
information is needed. Usually boys swap phone numbers and the Mentor makes contact before school
starts and then is available in the first few weeks of term to act as a support person for the
new enrolment. School Service Award Scheme points are issued in recognition of the efforts made
by effective Mentors. If you would like to help, please contact your Year 8 Adviser – Mr
Kay, Ms Menias or Ms Berger.
High Runners Club
In order to build long distance running capacity in the
school, we are sponsoring the High Runners Club on Friday mornings. It commenced last Friday. Old
Boy, Adam Booth is leading the group of runners to help with motivation and to set some
benchmarks for their running. There is no charge for this activity. We are trying to build the
depth of our distance running. Come and join in!
Light Rail Update
The Light Rail Project has received submissions from SBHS
relating to our concerns about safety for our student travellers. Suggestions to move the tram
stop further south were viewed favourably as was a suggestion that a footbridge should be
constructed to allow students and even patrons to cross safely both Anzac Parade and the bus way.
The Project has no funds to construct such a bridge. The definition design and Environmental
Impact Statement will probably be made public in early November after which a four-week public
consultation period will ensue. Major works on the light rail are planned to commence in 2015
with an anticipated completion date in 2019.
Properties Update
The Assets Management Unit is spending the 2013
allocation c$67k on priorities determined by the school. Protective maintenance has been carried
out on all north facing windows in Killip Wing. They have been repaired and painted. There will
be further work done on the main building to replace the guttering which is now not up to code in
size and run-off carrying capability. Due to the HSC examinations and the need to restrict noise,
the repairs to the Cutler Drive will now commence on November 7.
Weights Room Rules 2014
On August 17 last year I set out the Weights
Room Arrangements for 2013 in High Notes. I have reprinted them with adjusted figures to
reinforce the policy. Some people claimed this year they were unaware that there was a payment
deadline. Administration of the program is greatly assisted by a very large number of yearly
members. Families have plenty of time to decide whether they want to join up to the program for
all of 2014 or prefer to pay by term.
In the last couple of years there have been many cancelled invoices and re-invoices and
accompanying paperwork surrounding access to the weights room. Boys pay for a term and change
their minds and want the whole year. Some pay the whole year then want to opt out later. These
transactions are time consuming and costly. Students who wish to use the supervised weights room
in 2014 for the whole year should indicate their interest by commencing attendance in
February. All regular users of the weights room during
February will be invoiced $190 for unlimited use of the
facility for the rest of the year. They will be required to pay by the end of
February to take advantage of this heavily discounted rate. There will be no further
opportunity to access the yearly discount rate after that time. Existing users who have not paid
$190 within 14 days and any new users of the facility will be invoiced on the
basis of $80 per term.

‘Bring Your Own Device’ Program Update
In August, the Sydney Boys High School Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program was
launched. A letter was sent to all Year 8 parents and an advertisement placed in High Notes
outlining the program and inviting your feedback.
As a reminder: In 2014 students in Year 9 will be expected to bring their own computing device to
school every day. The BYOD Program is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to
make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances.
Last Opportunity for Comment
Since the launch of the program, we have been refining the program policies, developing
operational protocols and analysing your feedback. Soon the program will be finalised for 2014.
All comments and feedback must be received by 30 October 2013.

DISPOSING THANKS
Removing quite beautiful illustrated but out of date books
from a school library is rather distressing for a Librarian and I would like to thank my very
professional, teaching colleagues for responding to my emails to look over books from their
subject area and take them if they felt they could be useful for teaching and for diagrams. I was
particularly heartened by teachers in Science and TAS as well as English who took very valuable
and beautiful books for their classrooms. It is really great to see this support for literacy of
all types of literature.
HOUSEKEEPING IS VERY NECESSARY
In the modern school library which is looking more and more to the provision of relevant (and
instantly available from home) online library resources it is very necessary to remove older and
space consuming resources in a timely manner. It was rather amusing for me to speculate on
whether our Library books were more popular when we threw them out and students and staff
“rescued” them than they were when they were in the Library. However, it was
really great to see the books going nearly as fast as we disposed of them from our disposal
shelves.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHECKING UP ON THE LIBRARY CATALOGUE WITH EVERY NEW TOPIC – all
resources topic tagged for you
It is easy to “Google” your topic as you
learn it, to find out if the Libraries have a specifically curriculum related website, W drive
film/DVD, or book on Library Enquiry - which is available from Student Portals. It is
particularly important for Senior Boys to use the Library Catalogue now that we have 2 Libraries
- they share a catalogue. There are senior resources in the Junior Library due to book
space considerations. There can be a surprising number of resources under “social
justice” for example. All Library resources are tagged with up to 8
or 10 subject/topic tags so you can use them for your assignments and homework.
SPARE THE TIME TO LOOK OVER OUR “NEW RESOURCE” EMAILS – THE LIBRARIES
ARE VERY ENRICHING
Since some time last year both Librarians have made use of
Library Thing to collect new resource book covers to email to students and now
we have adopted the same visual communication with faculty staff. If you spare
the time to click into these you will have some idea of the range of resources our Libraries
have. Our libraries can be a very enriching experience if you have the time in your busy lives to
browse a little for pleasure (or homework).
NEW RESOURCES OUT THIS WEEK IN HIGH NOTES
Parents can see what is happening
with their Library Fund donations if they glance occasionally at the Library articles in High
Notes. Our Librarians go to a lot of trouble to communicate what is being purchased or processed
for both Libraries. Resources from the valuable Greg Babic Bequest are now beginning to come onto
the new resource displays as you will see from the following list of new resources out this week.

High Cricket
Captain of Cricket report:
Last Saturday was the second round of the GPS
for all age groups teams, playing T20 matches, and showing much needed fight against arch
rival’s Grammar. For the first time in many years High completed a clean sweep in the 16s
with honourable mentions to Vivek Kashyap for his calm hand in controlling the As’ innings,
and James Pope who bowled a very fiery spell early-on. The 1st and 2nd grade sides competed in
the second week of their respective T20 tournaments, with both playing well and unlucky to finish
the tournament winless. Some good performances have reflected the effort and time put in during
the preseason, which included a successful trip to Darwin. Both sides will come up against
Newington in a one-day trial this weekend, before the first official game of the GPS season. In
other news, the High cricket community would like to congratulate Vishnu Avudainayagam, Raycole
Dai (Randwick-Petersham), Shashank Nampalli (UNSW) and James Pope (Sydney Tigers) on their
selection in their respective sides for the prestigious AW Green Shield competition, which is
described as the premier U16s contest in Australia. We would also like to wish Vishal Nomula,
Tully Moffat, Raphin Hossain and Eli Hall the best of luck in their on-going trials for the CIS
U15s representative side.
Tushaar Garg
1st XI
Game 1 – Shore 5/102 (R.Sura 2/19, A.Chen 2/20) DEF High 83
all out. (T.Garg 25, L. De Fonseka 18)
Following some positive performances in the prior week’s T20s, High came out firing against
Shore. Lasith beat the bat on numerous occasions and is back at his best following time off from
cricket, troubling batsmen with his raw pace and bounce. However, credit must go to Raunak Sura,
who made the initial break through, and then Allen Chen who tied down the batsmen with his
accurate leg-spin. After holding Shore to 105, High batted well early on, but then lost three
wickets in four balls to leave the chase in a disastrous state. It was up to Tushaar and Jesse to
play calm hands, and despite both getting out due to minor brain-snaps, guided High to within 20
runs of the oppositions total.
Game 2 – King’s 4/154 (T.Garg 1/19, S.Nagaraj 1/32) DEF High 5/106 (T.Garg 30,
J.Cooper 22)
It seemed High had switched off for the start of the second match following an hour’s
break, as King’s won the toss and took advantage of some excellent batting conditions and
pitiable fielding. However, when Sagar was brought on he was not afraid to toss the ball up, and
consequently dictated terms with the batsmen; getting a brilliant stumping in that time. Some
wayward bowling towards the end of the innings let King’s get away as they posted 154.
Raunka Sura and Aditya Koneru came out with all the shots early on, with Raunak dispatching the
King’s opening bowler for consecutive boundaries through the covers off the 2nd and 3rd
balls of the innings. Another mini-collapse followed, and Tushaar was at the crease. He flicked
and drove with superb timing to hit a run-a-ball 30, but once again found himself back in
pavilion, not due to good bowling, but a lapse in concentration. Co-captain, Jesse Cooper then
came to the crease and provided a mix of his aggressive flair and quick running to hit 22 off 16.
Although High were defeated, they held their heads high and will go into next week with many
positives.
2nd XI
Game 1 – High 45 (N.Selvakummar 23) DEF BY Scots 46/1 (J.Huang
1-1 (4)
A disappointing batting performance by High, setting a total for the first time this season,
featured a combination of rash stroke play, economical bowling and variable bounce from the
pitch. The top order crumbled with a quick succession of early wickets, but Niroshan's
counterattacking 23, including 3 boundaries, was a positive to take out of the innings. The Scots
opening batsmen were troubled by a fantastic spell of swing bowling from Jackson Huang, who
finished with incredibly economic figures. Unfortunately, the small target of 45 was not enough
for High's bowlers to work with, who were, however, able to keep Scots in the middle for almost
13 overs.
Game 2 – Newington 104/6 (A.Dao 3-17 (3), S.Arvind 3-26 (4)) defeated High 89/5 (S.Arvind
45)
High capitalised on their decision to send Newington in, as Jackson and Jason produced
outstanding spells that mounted pressure on the opening pair. The fall of six late wickets,
between Barry and Sudarshan, restricted the flow of runs. Overall, it was an excellent bowling
and fielding effort from High. Jason and Michael started the second innings positively, while
Sudarshan and Marc's aggressive strokes made sure that the required run rate stayed manageable in
the middle overs. Unfortunately, a minor collapse initiated by Sudarshan holing out for 45, led
to an increasingly difficult equation for the lower order to handle and High fell agonizingly
short once more of a well-deserved win
4ths – HIGH 3/104 (14.3 overs) (Y.Kulasinghe 51 n.o, R.Saha 16 n.o) DEF
GRAMMAR 4/103 (20) (K.Robinson 2/6 (4), B.Lee 2/17 (3))
16As –
High 6/102 (32) (V. Kashyap 24 [58], S. Nampalli 18 [47], T. Moffat 18* [16]) DEF Grammar 69
(24.2) (J. Pope 3/13 [6], V. Kashyap 1/0 [0.2], R. Hossain 1/12 [3])
A steadfast batting performance from High saw them post a very respectable 6/102 off their 32
overs, with Vivek and Shashank providing a great platform for the middle order to accelerate
towards the end of the innings. The bowling effort got off to the best possible start, with two
fantastic direct hit run outs. A regular stream of wickets during the middle overs, aided by a
dominant fast bowling spell from James, saw High bowl Grammar out for 69 in just under 25 overs.
With the GPS season and Barberis Cup on the horizon, the team is looking towards a very
successful season.
16Bs -
High 9/106 (32) (F. Alam 38, S. Sooriakumar 17, D. Fu 11) DEF
Grammar 105 (21.1) (S. Sooriakumar 3/17 [4.1], T. Khan 2/13 [4], A. Deep 2/22 [5])
The first game of the season ended in a close victory for the 16Bs against rivals Sydney Grammar.
Having won the toss, and electing to bat we were off to a very shaky start. Our top order having
collapsed was rescued by Fayez Alam with his personal top score of 38 runs. Solid batting
performances by Saiharan and Denny Fu had also helped to reach a total of 106 runs off 32 overs.
When it came to bowling after the break, we had managed to grab 4 wickets in the first 16 overs,
with Saiharan falling a single wicket short of a hat trick. At drinks, it seemed very unlikely
that we’d be able to defend our total, as the opposition only required a mere 19 runs off
16 overs, and still had 6 wickets in hand. Despite this, a tremendous push by our bowling attack
and a newly inspired field had taken wicket after wicket, seizing the win by only a single run,
leaving Grammar all out for 105 within 24 overs; a brilliant effort.
15As –
We got off to a promising start against Grammar being none
down at drinks with Harishaan and Louis combining for a 50-run stand. However, the slow run rate
meant that the batsmen had to play more aggressive shots and this led to the fall of numerous
wickets. The lower order steadied to give a low, but defendable, total of 105. The bowlers bowled
economically, but poor fielding meant that the game slipped away from us, despite a four wicket
haul to Harishaan.
15Bs – High 54 all out. (R. Prabhu 12) DEF BY Grammar 4/55 (B.Graham 3/12)
14Bs – High 51 all out. [28] DEF By Grammar 5/53 [18] (M.McGregor 3/7)

After a disappointing result last week a more experienced and
knowledgeable High team hosted Sydney Grammar for the second round of the trial season. Josh and
Adam headed off strongly and began an early lead however were unable to capitalize. In the second
set trying to implement the style that we had been training however were unable to reclaim the
set. Eddy and Matthew were also unlucky but improved their doubles play from last week. Richard
and Carl were too good for their opponents in a close three set match as their volleying and
control over the ball was too much for their opponents. Richard’s singles concluded as a
tie due to time restrictions, however in the singles despite evident improvements in all our
games we still have a lot of room to progress and hopefully get some more wins and play some
better tennis in the coming weeks.

2nd Grade
Second Grade Encountered Grammar for the second round of the GPS
season. Through much training and dedication, Second Grade was rewarded with improved results.
Junjie demonstrated his ability in doubles with Ervin by coming back from a first set loss of 1-6
to fight back in the second, only just losing it by a tie-break. Our singles showed the most
improvement, with Junjie, Bohan and Calvin playing close matches of respectable scores. Jason was
the one that pulled out with a win this week. Although it may not have been his desired way to
win, he still claimed the first set 6-2 and claimed the second with the opponent retiring.
Overall, second grade played well and we have seen a drastic improvement from last week. If this
continues, we may be able to get a respectable rank in the GPS.

Playing with a home court advantage, the results produced on last
Saturday were not as expected. Losing both doubles in double breaks, the team had to rely on
winning their singles matches to secure the win. Unfortunately, this was not the case with two of
the four singles being lost, one being won (6-2), and one unfinished match. We will be looking to
improve on this result in the coming matches.
James Chee
6th Grade
Saturday saw High’s 6th grade team field different players
against Grammar, so for the most of us it was our first game of the season and our rusty match
play was evident. Despite this, we did not lose a match. Sarangan having not played for almost a
year dropped down 1-4 before coming back to win 6-5 in a tough match. In the other three singles
Allan, Karthik and Kevin cruised through 6-0, 6-2 and 6-4 respectively, and in our two doubles
matches we won 6-2 and by forfeit. We hope that these successful results will be reinforced next
week and that we continue to improve and gel as a team.

16 As
Last Saturday, the 16 As faced rival team Grammar in the second week
of the Term 4 Summer Split. With a slight roster change including the introduction of A Reserve
Thomas Nguyen, we were eager to get on the court. The first doubles match featured Garry Huang in
A1 and Preetham Kadappu, the new A2. It was a very close and intense match, but resulted in a
High victory, 6-5(3). Due to a lack of players on the Grammar side, they had to forfeit their
A3-A4 doubles match. Even with major improvements in our singles game, the Grammar players still
proved to be superior. Garry, playing the A1 position, lost 1-6. Anthony Yu, who played in the A2
position for singles, also fell short with a 0-6 defeat. Alex Liang played A3 for Preetham, and
won in a very close match, 6-5(3). Thomas, the A Reserve, played in the A4 role and lost his
first match of the season, 3-6. Once again, we were mainly behind in the singles matches and we
hope to improve our individual performances. However, our doubles were once again dominant and we
hope to continue this superiority throughout the season.

16 Bs
The second trial match of the season was against Grammar at their
courts at Weigall. The team was enthusiastic to get going as we all hoped for a win. However,
things didn’t really go very well. The B1 doubles were quickly dispatched 6-0 and despite
an early head start, the B2 doubles lost 6-2. And things went further downhill from there, with
every single singles match being lost with no more than 2 games taken from each set.
Unfortunately for us, we were simply heavily outclassed by Grammar, and we hope to improve on
this result with hard training over the next few weeks.

15 As
This week we played Grammar at Moore Park. With slight changes to the
teams, including Ting Li becoming our new A4 we were uncertain of how we would perform. The great
weather in the morning provided perfect match conditions and we managed to put intense pressure
on the opposition team. The doubles were all very close. However; our teams weren’t able to
seize many match point opportunities. In A1 and A2 double we lost 5-6 with a tiebreak score of
2-7. In A3 and A4 doubles we also lost 5-6 but with a tiebreak score of 6-8. In singles, A1
performed excellently with a dominating match win, 6-1. A3 was close to victory but was unable to
finish his opponent earlier in the game and the opponent managed to pull off a 5-6 victory with a
tiebreak score of 6-8. This week’s results show some improvements as we had better scores
than the previous week.
Wanyu Tang
15 Cs
The 15 Cs pulled off some pleasing results this weekend against
Grammar, with a nail biting 6-5 win in our doubles and three clean wins in our singles.
Outstanding tennis by the team, and hopefully we can keep this standard up in future
matches.

Last weekend, Sydney Boys played at SBHS tennis courts against Sydney
Grammar. Unlike the previous weekend, we played better and won a lot more matches. A1 and A2
doubles we lost 6-4. A1 singles we won 6-2 and A2 singles we won 6-4. A3 and A4 doubles we lost
7-5. A3 singles we won 6-1 and A4 singles we lost 6-4. Overall the A team beat Grammar.
Congratulations and best wishes for next week

Last Saturday, Sydney Boys played Sydney Grammar at Sydney Boys
Tennis Courts. Our B1 and B2 won with a score of 6 - 3. Our other doubles team, B3 and B4 lost 3
- 6. On our singles B1 won ending up with a total score of 6 - 4. B2 unfortunately lost 4 - 6.
And our B3 and B4 both lost with a score of 4-6. Overall as a group we improved from last week
and just lost to Grammar totalling the scores up. Good luck and keep up the good work.

In Firsts Anto Wu provided one of the highlights of the day going coast to coast, beating three
players off the dribble and finishing left handed at the ring over the remaining two Grammar
defenders. The 14s age group is improving; Nirvan Chand pulled in a huge number of rebounds. The
15s age group held on thanks to several hustle plays, including 6 steals by Elliot Love. The 16s
age group also managed a close victory with Albert Yang finishing the coach’s set play
consistently with his left hand around the ring to seal the result. As an early notice,
Shootin’ Hoops is managed by a Year 12 student each year as the editor; I am now looking
for someone to take over the role as editor for Shootin’ Hoops after my HSC. In the
meantime, I hope to go over some procedures in writing Shootin’ Hoops so that you can do
that yourself when I’m gone (trust me, it’s not hard and is fun). Please go to Mr B
Hayman in the PDHPE staffroom if interested. Train hard for next week’s game boys!

2014 New Parents Welcome
A very warm thank you to the group of Year 7 parents involved in the organisation of the 2014 New
Parent Welcome. This is an important date in the calendar for the P&C and the school, and the
interest and effort invested by this group will no doubt translate into a successful event.
Parking
With the end of the year approaching, parents are reminded that a number of valuable parking
events, including the Sydney Ashes test, will be held during the holiday period. With many
families away at this time, it is very important to help with these important fund raising
opportunities where you can. Please keep an eye out for requests from your son’s
co-curricular group during the break.
