High Notes, Vol 14 No 3, February 15 2013

From the Principal
High Talent
At last Saturday’s SBHS Junior regatta the Year 9 1st
coxed quad scull won their division in 4.06.30. Congratulations to Kevin Fan, Jacob Katafano,
Oliver Lethbridge, Anthony Zhang and Daniel Xu for a highly competitive row. Benjamin
Laird’s HSC work won the Australia Post Sponsor’s Prize at ARTEXPRESS.
Congratulations to Ben!
P & C Meeting
At the February P & C meeting >75 parents
attended. I presented an analysis of the school’s HSC results from 2012. Many parents were
interested in what happened to HSC scores and how they were calculated as ATAR scores. While the
calculation of ATARs by iterative scaling is a very complex process, the results of it affirm two
things: students should choose courses that they like enough to put significant effort into
but should not overreach themselves and undertake courses for which they are ill-suited and
underprepared; and more difficult courses hold their ATAR value down to the 75th percentile.
Quite a number of parents had follow up questions. Much of the information presented is now
available on the website, thanks to webmaster. To view it go to choose ‘Publications’ in
the navigation bar, then scroll down until ‘’ is highlighted.
The page has been updated for the HSC results but we are still waiting for UAC to send the final
information about university offers and acceptances. The information on the destination of our
2012 HSC students should be available and uploaded by the end of the month.
ICT Update
The ICT team was very busy in 2012. The Network infrastructure
modernisation phases 3.1, 3.2 and 4.1 were completed at a cost of $26k. Data projectors and sound
systems were installed in rooms102, 105, 212, 215, 704, 802 and the Common Room ($40k),
completing the 6-year project subsidised heavily by a regular distribution of profits from the
Canteen. A core server and a terminal server came out of warranty and were replaced ($18k).
Desktop computer memory upgrades and hardware replacement were carried out ($13k). Parts,
accessories, printer standardisation and licensing fees cost ($9.6k). The Internet hosting system
was upgraded ($3k). The server room was renovated ($2.5k), cabling was installed in the foyer and
room 304 ($2.5k). Three scanners were purchased to make recording of attendance easier ($1k) The
major cost item was wages and allowances for the three-man ICT team ($187.9k).
The total contribution from the DEC for ICT is in a $44k grant and an annual computer roll out of
40 machines. The TSOs funded by DEC only maintain the DEC issued notebooks for students.
Notebooks for Year 9 students were issued this week. This is the last scheduled rollout of the
Commonwealth program. New solutions will need to be found for ICT access for students in the
Junior School going forward.
The school provides an advanced and reliable network, professional and technical services,
database management and website maintenance. We are totally reliant on parents
paying the technology levy to maintain this level of service for current students. Please make
your contribution promptly this year.
School Council
At the School Council meeting this week the annual budget
was tabled and discussed. Long term financial trends were analysed. The Sports Council, operating
as a committee of the SBHS School Council, tabled a paper on sports development and
administration. School community attitudes towards how sport is administered were canvassed
broadly in 2012 and the Sports Council had many meetings debating the issue. The Sports council
has now identified the issues and presented its finding to the SBHS School Council. At the
meeting, the Council voted to refer the paper to the school with the request that a sports policy
be developed by the school and that it then be referred for discussion and ratification by the
School Council.

SBHS Debating
We were overwhelmed by the turn out to watch the Show Debate on Friday. We had 65 students sign
up to be part of the Year 7 Debating Program and many of you are very experienced debaters. This
year we should have 7 or 8 coaches designated for Year 7 which means we will be able to keep
coaching class sizes small. All this bodes well for a highly successful start for Year 7 2013.
Coaching for Years 7, 8, 11, 12 begins this Friday. If you did not sign up for coaching there
will be no spot for you. Years 9 and 10 starts next week. Coaching will begin in designated
classrooms at 3.25 and will end 4.40 for Years 7, 8, 9 and 5pm for Years 10-12.
For all parents I am attaching a calendar to this week’s High Notes for your reference.
Please keep this in a safe place as all the key events are marked on it. In competitions, if our
name is first this means it is a Home Debate. Junior Eastside debates start at 6.30 and Seniors
at 7.30. Junior Friday Evening (FED) debates start at 7 and Seniors at 8pm. Debaters have to be
here much earlier to be involved in the coin toss and then have one hour of prep. It is a High
tradition that students stay in school after coaching and many of the older boys go to Cleveland
Street to get takeaway food. They are often accompanied by the younger boys until they get used
to going alone. If we have Home Debates then boys are expected to bring some food to share
with our opponent school for supper, after the debate. This is a debating tradition and we expect
all boys to contribute to this. Next week our Supper Coordinators will provide some guidance for
this in High Notes.
An important event for parents is 28 February. On that date we will be holding a Debating
Supporters Group meeting from 6pm until 7pm and then from 7pm to 8pm will be an Information
Evening for Parents so that they can find out about the Debating Program at High. Please come
along if you have any unanswered questions or would like to find out more about Debating at High.
I have received about 4 new email addresses this week which is a bit disappointing as so many new
students in a range of Years have signed up for debating. If your son is involved or thinking of
getting involved in debating this year then you must sign up for the Debating emails. Each week I
communicate with boys and parents via email about the up and coming week and give out important
notices. Please email me on
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
and tell me your son’s name, his Year group and your name. If neither you nor your son is
on the emailing list then it is highly likely that he will miss out on important opportunities
that arise in debating.

This week’s full-school matchup against Newington saw many of our teams emerging
victorious, as per previous matchups against Newington, showing the great strength of our
Basketball program. The 13s saw their first match against Newington this Saturday, and although
the scoreboards show a low scoring 13s age group I was personally there to witness the fiery team
spirit which every single High Year 7 boy possessed as they tried their hardest on every single
possession. Everybody starts off like this; when I was in Year 7 we lost every single game as
well. However, don’t ever be discouraged and as you can see in the 14s, it only takes one
season to come together as a team before dominating in the 14s age group! As can be seen by the
14Es and Fs this week, both teams would’ve scored in triple digits had they been given more
time or played a stop-clock game. Well done to them, and keep working hard! GLANDEN ZHENG
A message from Mr B Hayman, the MIC of Basketball at High: Hang in there 13s -
The schools you play against have been training together for years whilst most of you have not
played sport before! Play hard, play smart and play together and turn it around like our seniors
who lost in Year 7 too but are winning now!

This week’s matchup will be against SHORE. Good luck to all the teams, make sure you train
hard!

SHS Rowing
Sydney High Junior Regatta Results
SHS Rowing hosted a very short and sweet Junior Regatta last Saturday, 9th February, at Hen &
Chicken Bay. The conditions were beautiful, the racing was exciting with great commentary, and
the regatta ran like clockwork thanks to a great team of Old Boys and coaches, who set up the
course at dawn and then ran the regatta. Thank you to George Comninos, and the committee, for
coordinating sale of refreshments and programs to the many spectators.
Our standout performance of the day went to the Year 9 1st Quad winning the last race of the day
in the time of 4.06.30 – Congratulations to Oliver Lethbridge, Jacob Katafono, Ed
Belokopytov, Kevin Fan, (c) Daniel Xu.

1st Grade
After a strong week of training, High headed out to face
competition leaders Newington in a tough matchup for us. It was a disappointing start to the day
with High going down in all three of the doubles matches. Number 1 doubles, Pat and Frank played
an entertaining game of doubles, however were unable to capitalise on critical opportunities in
the match, going down 6-7 3-6. In the number 2 doubles, Adam and Josh showed improved play during
the match, however were let down by their slow start to the match, going down 0-6 3-6. Ian and
Eddy struggled to find their groove in the match, going down 1-6 2-6. In the singles, Patrick
displayed a solid game throughout the match against a much stronger opponent; however fell short
in the end, 5-7 3-6. In the number 3 singles, Adam found it difficult to penetrate his
opponent’s consistent game, going down 1-6 3-6. Josh suffered an injury scare and struggled
to get back into the match, going down, 0-6 2-6. Ian and Eddy played well in short patches;
however were beaten by stronger and more consistent opponents to go down 1-6 1-6 and 1-6 2-6
respectively in their matches. In the number 2 singles, Frank decided to take the long road again
after trailing 5-7 2-4 to fight back to take the match in three sets and prevent the whitewash,
5-7 7-5 7-5. The final result read 11-1 in favour of Newington, a disappointing result despite
the effort put in to training by the boys. The boys will be definitely looking for better results
this week against Shore.

2nd Grade
This week, High went out against the very strong and well known
Newington in their second rubber of the year. Although High did not achieve the intended results,
it was definitely a bigger improvement to last week. Number 1 doubles, Carl and Richard, went all
out against a tough server, and consistent player. It was a close match with High close to
winning the second set, but ended with a 6-4 6-4 loss. Number 2 doubles, Ryo and Calvin, started
off the first set with a close finish, but were unable to keep the intensity in the second
resulting in a 7-5 6-3 loss. Number 3 doubles, James and Bohan, were against tough
and aggressive players and along with the fairly new pair up led to a 0-6 3-6 loss.
Carl played against a strong server and managed well through the first set. However, with the
sudden step up on the second and third set, Carl slowly began to lose confidence leading to a
disappointing 6-1 4-6 1-6 defeat. Richard played against a smart and placement type of player,
unable to keep the ball in play while running side to side on the court, leading to a 1-6 2-6
defeat. Calvin fought hard against a consistent player but was unable to handle the high bouncing
balls putting him on the back foot, resulting in a 0-6 0-6 defeat. Ryo went on to the court with
confidence and fighting hard, but with the opponents strong, fast shots, while also
keeping his consistency, Ryo was just outplayed, losing the match 4-6 4-6. James went against a
solid all-round player who had, while strong, also consistent strokes on all his shots. James
fought back hard but was unable to keep up with his opponent's form, leading to a 2-6 1-6 defeat.
Bohan was against an aggressive net player, which forced Bohan onto the defence constantly,
resulting in a 1-6 0-6 loss. High did not perform the best, but with high spirits, we will push
even harder for our opponents next week.

1st Grade
Ominous clouds and intermittent rain threatened our opening home
match this year against a competitive St Ignatius outfit. However, an unlikely break in the
weather saw play commence at 2pm, with four hours of play left in the day. The doubles matches
had all made solid progress until rain struck again one hour into play. When the matches resumed
shortly after, number 1 doubles combo of Pat and Frank were able to complete the win, 6-3 6-2 by
playing solid tennis throughout the match. However in the other doubles, the rain delay had
negative effects as the number 2 and 3 doubles were undone by some crafty doubles play by their
opponents to go down 3-6 0-6 and 2-6 4-6 respectively in their matches. In the singles, Patrick
continued his stunning form from the preseason to confidently defeat his opponent 6-3 7-5. In the
number 3 singles, Adam used a successful game plan and a patient approach to overcome his
opponent 6-4 6-3. Eddy fought hard to find consistency in his play all match, however came up
short against a quality opponent, going down 1-6 1-6. A dramatic finish to the day’s play
was nearing as the score line read three matches apiece with three singles matches still being
played out as well as time approaching the end of play at 6pm. In the number 2 singles, Frank
fought back from injury and 1-4 deficits in the first two sets to be on the brink of victory when
the clock hit 6pm, having to settle for a draw, 5-7 6-4 5-1. Josh and Ian played some
enthusiastic tennis, however were also unable to complete their matches with their score lines
3-6 1-1 and 4-6 respectively at 6pm. After a weather affected day, the final score line read 6
matches a piece, a repeat of the draw played out in the trial season.

2nd Grade
Second grade started off their first GPS match of the New Year
with disappointing results, however with high fighting spirits. The weather was unfavorable for
the first two hours of the day, only allowing us to start at 2 in the afternoon. Number one
doubles pair; Carl and Richard were against tough and offensive opponents. However, the of
inconsistency along with the very aggressive net play by Ignatius led to an overwhelming 6-1 6-1
defeat. Number 2 doubles, Calvin and Ryo, struggled in the opening set but fought back hard
in the second, managing to take the set in a close tie break. However, their opponents were
strong enough to fight back in the super tie break only just managing to win 10-7. Number 3
doubles James and Bohan was a fairly new pair, and this seemed to cause uneven team work, losing
the match 6-0 6-1. Carl played consistently with his opponent however was seemingly always on the
defensive side leaving the opponent free to attack, losing the match 6-3 6-2. Richard played
against a tough opponent with strong and consistent ground strokes, going down 6-2 6-2. Calvin
started off well nearly taking the first set home yet unable to finish his opponent, losing 6-4
6-2. Ryo fought well and hard against his opponent only just losing the first set but unable to
finish the match due to the time limit, drawing at 7-5 2-1. James performed fairly well against
his opponent but was outclassed losing 6-3 6-4. Bohan started off slightly weak but fought hard
on the second set, unfortunately losing 6-1 6-3. High made a disappointing start off to the year
but will be working harder than ever to improve our performance against other schools.

3rd-6th Grade Tennis Match Report
Our team faced Newington College with mixed results last week. We managed to win two of the four
grades and drew in 6th grade. 3rd Grade played extremely well with only a single loss. 1st
doubles pair had a very narrow victory clinching the tiebreaker 7-0 to win 6-5. However, the 2nd
doubles pair played excellently, winning all three of their matches 6-0 so congratulations to
Denny Dien and Dominic Mah. 4th Grade’s doubles performance was very strong with 2
convincing wins. The 2nd doubles pair also won 6-0 with Andrew Tayeh going on to win his singles
match in the same fashion. Overall, 4ths also won five of their six games. 5th grade lost which
was a huge shock. Only Geoffrey Liu managed to win his singles 6-3 beating the trend. I hope they
will improve their performance next week. 6th grade drew in closely fought matches. They continue
to improve from their so-so performance last term. Congratulations to all the boys who won this
week. I hope to see further improvements in our tennis with training picking up from the holiday
break.

Week 3: SHS vs NC
After last week’s washout, the 16s tennis
team were eager to get back into competition. First up with the Cs and Ds, High was unable to
secure a victory by narrowly losing by one match. However, there were positive displays of
attitude and skill. As for the A and B competition, the team faced a strong and determined
opposition. With an average start, winning only two of the four doubles, High had to fight even
harder for the overall win. An excellent effort was produced by the A2, A3 and A4 seeds who had
easy 6-2 and 6-3 wins. For the first week back into competition, I was very pleased with the
perseverance and focus demonstrated throughout the team and we hope to carry this into every
Saturday match.
