Parent Information EveningsYear 9 2014 Parent Information EveningA Parent Information Evening will be held on Monday 9 September in the Great Hall at 6:00 pm to discuss the subjects studied by boys in Year 9 2014. Year 10 2014 Parent Information EveningA Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 3 September in the Great Hall at 6:00 pm to discuss the subjects studied by boys in Year 10 2014. Subject Acceleration (in subjects such as Modern History, Geography, Music etc) has been offered to Year 10 boys in past years. In 2014 Year 10 boys will study 3 electives (possibly including an Acceleration subject). The options available to boys for 2014 will be discussed at the meeting. The main focus of the meeting will be relevant for boys interested in subject acceleration. Year 11 2014 Parent Information Evening
A Parent Information Evening will be held on Monday 9 September in the Great
Hall at 7:00 pm to discuss the subjects studied by boys in Year 11 2014.

From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9662 9300 and dial “1” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.

Adam Magro (1988) played rugby for the Wallabies and while working in funds management, is undertaking his PhD in Economics. SBHS DebatingI must inform you all that an administrative oversight means that only a limited number of you received invoices for debating and although I can see that some debaters have made their co-payments without an invoice the vast majority have not. The invoices were sent out last week. I urge you to make your co-payments as soon as possible please. Last Friday was the last hosting (apart from when we host the Rep debates) of the season. Despite it not being very successful as far as debating was concerned, the evening went smoothly from an organisational point of view and there were many compliments from our visiting parents and students. A big thank you to Oliver Long who has worked extremely efficiently and energetically all season to make sure all the behind scenes work is completed. He has led a number of boys each week including Chi, Nathan, Jens and Benjamin. The organisation of Home Debates is not without its stresses but these boys have certainly helped make things a lot easier for me. A big thank you to Nina Ilina who has worked so hard each week to make sure our suppers are so well coordinated and the talk of the debating circuit. Any parent who does the right thing by sending their sons in with some supper to share or some money to contribute have helped us in this regard. On top of that there are a string of junior and senior parents who Nina has thanked along the way who gives up some extra time to either help set up or help clear up. On Saturday we had parking and we were really pleased with the turnout of parents and students. Thanks to everyone. I am particularly impressed to see some of you who were at debating on Friday still managed, in spite of all your other commitments, to turn up to help out. Friday 6th September is the last debate of the season it will be an away debate against St
Jospeh’s College. I have arranged transport to take all boys over and the Junior boys back
after their debates via Central. Sunday 8th September is the debating dinner. We have
already sold many tickets to this and I expect to sell out BEFORE the closing date which is
Monday 2nd September.

INTERSCHOOL CHESS COMPETITION 2013 The Junior Grammar A team switched their board 1 & 2 players for strategic purposes and although on board 2 our James Snow had an unfortunate slow defeat, our Board 1 player, Raymond Li seamlessly dominated his game. On Board 4 Sean Zhang beat his opponent and it was all in the hands of Board 3 Wesley Yu. He had a surefire draw, however instead of opting for perpetual check, he went for a win which resulted in a loss for the team. Although the score was 2-2, due to new tiebreaker regulations, it was an unfortunate loss for our Juniors.
Our Seniors were playing Grammar neck and neck for almost 1.5 hours. On Board 3 Michael Cui
eventually lost under time pressure as did board 4 Ray Cheng while Darryl Chan on board 2
outmanoeuvred his opponent and won with style. It was all down to Board 1 Erix Xu, as winning on
board 1 would result in a win under these new tiebreaker rules. Eric had a definite draw but
desperately fought for a win by playing riskily and creating pitfalls. He was unable to convert
the draw as the opponent caught him out on his bluff, and the Seniors stood 1-3 against Grammar
A.
Volleyball NotesGPS Volleyball Results
GPS 2nds Report With Seconds broken up into a number of separate teams, SBHS C at Olympic Park on Friday faced the tournament without a traditional setter. The best we had were Thomas and myself. Thomas nominated me. While my setting wasn’t too jarring, the largest issue was of consistency and of my tendency to step away from the net while setting, meaning I was setting on an awkward angle. Despite this and the lack of time for our outside and middle hitters to adjust to my style, we succeeded in our match against Cabramatta 2-0, with convincing set scores of 25-15, 25-21. However while we were fuelled by this early victory, our success was not to last. Our next match against Rooty Hill began with a very worrisome loss in the first set, 10-25. While we picked up our game and fought back in the second set, it was still not enough to reclaim what we had lost, and we lost that set too, 21-25. We thought we had our final match against Punchbowl in the bag, but were met with surprise when they took the first set and won, with us down 24-26. While we may have finished the second set with a greater than 2 point lead in the end, the timer went at 20-20 in the second set, with Punchbowl winning by default. It was an unfortunate end to the day, with that being our final match.
Having beat Grammar in our previous match against them, we were eager for another win and to
solidify an undefeated GPS status. However despite being at home, we were unprepared despite
having the whole team together again after Friday for the level of play and the audience Grammar
would bring with them. Despite being up in the first set, Grammar fought back, managing to take
the lead themselves and win the first set 21-25. Our serve accuracy was down, as was our
communication levels, and our game was suffering as a result. Grammar expertly defended against
every one of our balls that wasn’t a spike: effectively turning even the best tip to the
back corners into a free ball to use to their advantage. While the second set was closely fought,
Grammar took it to the end once more, 20-25. We were down 2-0, and the pressure was on. We played
better in the third set, tactically tipping it to the setter or just long of him when forced to,
taking advantage of their discovered weakness in covering that area. However while this proved to
be successful and our serving and communication had been raised once more, ultimately it was not
enough, and we lost the third set 23-25. While it was unfortunate to have lost our undefeated
status, Grammar did deserve to win with the level of volleyball they were playing on Saturday.
Despite this, we were consoled and were pleased in the knowledge that we were still the GPS
Premiers given Grammar’s loss of two matches compared to our one.
Mr M. Kay Junior Star Volleyball TeamsCongratulations to our Junior Star Volleyball Teams (15yr & under), who won both Gold and Silver medals at State Volleyball New South Wales (SVNSW) Schools Cups (Tournament #3) on the 23rd August 2013 (see attached photos). It is especially exciting for the young Star Team who are 14yr & under. The team has made big progress in a short four months, from winning no games at Tournament #1, to winning two games at Tournament #2, to finally winning four of five games at Tournament #3 and receiving a silver medal for the team. Congratulations! Thanks for our coach Mr.Michael Kay and every boy in the team.
Junior FencingNational School Championships, Brisbane
Landing at Brisbane airport with 6 hours to kill before the start of our competition, the High
sabre team decided to watch and support our epee team which started before ours. With the system
based on wins/losses and point indicators, we were determined to win at least 2 of its 4 matches
and hopefully earn a podium finish. High was hit with a slow start to the competition, losing its
first two matches 45-37 and 45-32 to Reddam House and Newington College respectively. With our
final two matches against Brisbane A and Brisbane B and in order to finish in the top three, High
had to beat Brisbane B persuasively in order to maximise our indicator, but only won marginally
45-42. After three long matches, our bye arrived at the right time, allowing us to refocus and
watch how the current competition leader, Brisbane A, fence. As this was the last match of the
competition and the one that will decide the top 3, we decided to take advantage of Brisbane A
through their weaknesses, and this was done with Marshall claiming 15 points in one bout, giving
us a marginal lead, with two bouts to go. Down 40-38 with one bout remaining, Ian fenced
extraordinarily earning High a 45-43 victory, but unfortunately High was unable to achieve a
podium finish, eight indicator points behind third placed Newington. YiuTao Wong
