High Talent
Thank you to Sharek Khan (Year 11) for coordinating the Jeans for Genes Day morning collection by 87 High boys who raised $13,954.85 for the cause. Thank you to Mr Hannon for volunteering his time, too.

Enrolment 2014 progress
Lists of offers and acceptances for Year 7 2014 have been received from the High Performing Students Unit. The process of assessment of applications, data entry, ranking, assessors meetings and interviews for prospective enrolments for 2014, has mostly been completed. Some places have to be reserved if appeals have been notified. Offer letters and Reserve List letters have been sent.

Year 12 Students
Year 12 boys are currently in the midst of their Trial HSC examinations. HSC practical exams for drama have been completed and HSC music composition recording times are scheduled. Major works are due to be submitted for visual arts and DT students. It is a busy and stressful time for our boys. Year 12 parents should have received a letter from the Principal containing information about arrangements after the Trial HSC, the procedure for N awards, scholarship deadlines, reference process and final portfolios and warnings about the consequences of unacceptable behaviour in the last weeks of school. If you haven’t received such a letter, please contact me and I will have one faxed or emailed to you.

Facilities maintenance
DEC has approved funding for drainage works and resurfacing of a section of Cutler Drive in between the boom gates. The works are estimated to cost about $30,000. This area is in serious disrepair and this injection of funds is most welcome. Another critical area of need is the set of windows on the ground floor of Killip Wing facing west. We are negotiating with the Assets Management people for a quotation to repair, encapsulate or replace the ground floor windows. This task will consume all of the remaining maintenance funds allocated to the school for 2013.

‘Tell Them From Me’
I am happy about the level of response to this survey. As of Wednesday, over 450 boys had accessed their user names and passwords in order to complete the survey. The last chance to have your say in the survey is Monday, August 26. Year 12 boys in particular are urged to access their user names and passwords and join in. Two Award Scheme points should be an incentive for some!

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian.  If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required.  Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9662 9300 and dial “1” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly.  Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave

If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave.  Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave.  Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

The Principal must approve all leave applications.

SBHS Debating

At Riverview on Friday we were troubled with ill health which meant that Andrew Liu stepped from Thirds into Firsts. I really thank him for doing this and by all accounts he did a great job, but unfortunately we narrowly lost on a split decision.

I was lucky enough to watch two of the 8/12 winning debates on Friday. The Year 9s were a formidable team showing a great knowledge of current affairs when debating the negative on the topic 'That the police should break up peaceful protests on private land.'   I was very impressed with the standard shown, boys - keep up the great work and it just shows how useful regularly watching The Project is!  All humour aside, it is crucial that debaters keep up to date with current affairs and the news by reading, listening to and watching quality news programmes.

In the Seniors I was happy to see Jonathon, Lokesh and Riley working so well together as a team. Their debating styles are very different, but highly complementary and they have a well deserved unbeaten streak in GPS so far. The topic "That the Police should carry Tasers instead of Guns" was well negated by our team and I thought it was an extremely high quality debate.

Thank you also to Nick Phillis who took Andrew's place in the Thirds team and debated alongside his brother, Sam and Daniel Fang and scored a win. Very well done, boys. I know it is pretty stressful having to debate up - especially at the last minutes, but it is excellent practice for debating and in life!

We have three more debates to go and this week is our last Home Debate and it is always the most exciting of the season because we will be debating Grammar.  The following week we are at Newington and boys will be expected to make their own way there and in the final week against St Joseph’s I have ordered a bus again.

AMATEUR BLITZ CHESS COMPETITION - BEGINS MONDAY RECESS
The draw will be posted on the Junior Library Noticeboard by lunchtime and the new draw posted up after each session. 15 minute blitz chess games will be judged by our Chess experts.  Timers will be used. The competition is sudden death. All Years may enter. Chess club competitors are asked not to enter. The competition will begin at lunchtime and continue at afternoon tea time.

SBHS ‘Bring Your Own Device’ Program

In 2014 students in Year 9 will be requested to bring their own computing device to school every day.

This Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program replaces the Digital Education Revolution scheme that has ended.

What is BYOD?

Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, is a technological trend in education and in the corporate world.

BYOD recognises that technology and choices about technology are very much personal.

BYOD acknowledges technology in education means more than meeting specific curriculum requirements.

BYOD is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances.

How will it work?

In 2014 students in Year 9 will be expected to bring their own computing device to school every day.

We will be making recommendations later this year as to the model of device you may choose to bring.

Or you can bring something of your own choosing that meets our Device Specification.

There is also some software that you have must on the device. In most cases there are free options for software.

You will be required to sign a User Charter that sets out how the device can be used at school.

A member of the school staff, the Bring Your Own Device Service Officer, will be available to answer questions and to give assistance.

However, the school does not manage, support, own or warranty the device - it's your device.

SHS OBU High Achievers Event

Senior students, this is your opportunity to gain valuable insights from some of our School’s leading old boy ‘High Achievers’ at a special event at the School on Thursday, 5 September 2013.

This special evening of presentations and discussions, conducted by the 探花视频 Old Boys’ Union, will enable current students and your parents to mix with and seek advice from successful old boys in business, medicine, law, public service, sport and other fields.

Summary of Sports Policy and Follow up Procedures

Summer sport selections are coming up very soon. Ensure you fully understand what is expected of you if you sign up to a Saturday AAGPS sport.  The full sports policy is on the schools website under the ‘Sports’ dropdown menu.

• If you sign up to a sport you are expected to commit to that sport for the whole season
• All students are to nominate via the online system for the sport and your preferred team; however, final team selections will be subject to selection trials.
• If you select a Saturday AAGPS sport- and you are successful in making a team you are expected to attend all of the training sessions
  • A/B teams- 3 training sessions a week (including 1 sport session)
  • C/D/E/F teams- 2 training sessions a week (including 1 sport session)
  • All other sports- 2 training sessions a week (including 1 sport session)
  • Weights/Sprints etc are counted as a session
  • The MIC of your sport will inform you of when/where your training sessions are. This information will also be in your student portal
• Saturday Absence- If you are absent from Saturday due to a legitimate reason:
  • If you know ahead of time- speak to the MIC of your sport and tell your coach
  • Go to student portal and submit that you will be absent in the week leading up to the match
  • or a minimum of one hour before your game starts on a Saturday
  • Follow this up with a note from your parent/doctor explaining the absence
  • Put the note inside the ‘Saturday Absences’ box outside the PDHPE office by 9am sharp on the following Monday morning
  • Make sure the note has your full name, roll class and dates for your absence
• Training absence- if you are absent from a training session
  • Bring a note and place it in the ‘Training Absences’ box outside the PDHPE office by 9am the next day you are at school.
  • What if you are injured/sick over a longer period of time? – Ensure the note has the full and accurate details on it including your name, roll class, start date & finish date for the absence
• Training days
  • Most training sessions outside of school hours will occur on a Monday, Wednesday (Years 7-9) and Thursday (Years 10-12). Ensure you make these times available for your team training sessions.

GPS 2nds Report
Last Saturday 2nd Grade volleyball played Newington in our rematch for the season. Having defeated them previously 3-0, we were confident in our ability to recreate those results. Beating them in the first set 25-22, we expected the opposition to begin falling apart as they had previously. However, with a few tactical errors and a mix up in the rotation, we quickly began to lose the lead in the second set and were unable to get it back, and the Newington team took the second set 17-25 and had equalised. Our communication had dropped and our passing and hitting ability with it, preferring to take the safer option to tip rather than to spike the ball down. However, having identified these problems we successfully picked up our game in the third set, replying to Newington by demolishing them 25-8.

The Newington team on Saturday nonetheless was quite different to the guys we had played in the first round of the GPS, managing to maintain their morale and ability well into the 4th set. While this was the case, we managed to pull ahead early on and take the set with a decent four point lead, 25-21, and in the process securing the match 3-1. Still undefeated, our next match remains as our toughest challenge against Grammar in the final round of the season.

High vs Joeys

Going to St.Joseph’s is always a difficult day for an opposition school. It was no different for Sydney High last weekend with all teams facing tough games. The standout performance of the weekend was the 15As who came from behind to defeat the St.Joseph’s 15Cs. The 13As and 14As did very well against tougher opponents, playing Bs instead of Cs.

The Saturday morning saw us having our annual face off with the St. Josephs College 15Cs side, and although the distance delayed some people, we had all arrived expecting a good match of rugby. The security guards enclosing the compound could not contain the electric atmosphere surrounding our presence, as we warmed up with extreme content and focus, preparing our bodies, minds and souls for the excruciating challenge that we knew was awaiting us.

The whistle blew, and our battle cries were heard by many far and wide, following the beats of our triumphant footsteps towards our opponent, leaving our opponents with such dread that their once strong legs were quivering. The housekeeping was done, and we got down to brass tacks, as we held our almighty formation awaiting the high ball soaring through the skies, eventually landing within our grasps.

The match was rough and unforgiving from the start, and we found ourselves mercilessly defending in our territory, a very unfavourable tactical position. Eventually, a tireless campaign by Joeys towards our try line paid off, and they found themselves leading on the scoreboard after a failed conversion attempt, leaving the scores at 0-5. This struck the team hard, and redemption was sought by all of our players, as we had tasted defeated too many times, and we were not looking forward to it again.

The kick off saw a new team playing on the field, with speed, agility and aggression. Our subsequent phases and dominant rucking saw us quickly advance in the field, playing the better game of rugby. We were rewarded with a try by Ethan Merrick, our standing fly half, using the wide ball off the ruck to weave through the defence, which was hastily converted with superb execution by Oliver Lethbridge. The momentum kept up, as another try was scored through our team efforts, again converted, leaving the scores at 14-5, a decent advantage heading into halftime.

The break was necessary but brief, as rehydration under the heating sun was the main concern for a team only halfway through the battle. We kicked off into the wind, a factor that would be extremely relevant in the finishing moments of the game. Our spirits were challenged, as try attempts were held off as long as possible with several heroic attempts, a special mention going to Kevin Fan with his spectacular fly kick, ejecting the ball from the hands of an attacker. However, St. Joseph’s managed to score two tries against us, luckily both un-converted, putting them in the lead by a nail biting single point. 

The scrums were uncontested after half time, and several scrums within 20 metres of our try line saw several try attempts by Joeys being blocked by our remarkable defenders. The ball was ours once again however, and we were picking up momentum. Several forward runs got the ball rolling, and gaps opened up on the outside which were remarkably found by our fullback Anthony Zhang, who combined again with our inside centre Oliver to score the try that put us ahead.

The conversion being missed left the scores at a tight 19-15, putting them within winning range of a try, not exactly the safest position to be in. The last play was announced, and a scrum won by our opposition left us in a dangerous situation. The defensive line rushed in with haste, forcing the opposing fly half to kick the ball. But the strong wind carried the ball, luckily, past the dead ball line, and as the referee blew his whistle, we knew that victory had been secured, and we let our tired bodies rest as we congratulated our worthy opposition, and could walk away from the field with a triumphant and satisfying victory against St Joseph’s College.

Tickets are $30 per person, payable to the Main Office. Seats are strictly limited so make sure you and your teammates get in early to secure a spot. Payments close on Wednesday 10th September or when sold out.

Committee Meetings

There will be a committee meeting held in room 901 (upstairs in the gymnasium) on Monday, 26th August at 6:00pm. All parents and supporters are welcome.

The final committee meeting of the season will be held on Monday, 16th September at 6:00pm. This will serve as High Football’s 2013 season review, looking at topics including:

Coaching  -  Grounds  -  Co-Payments  -  Staffing  -  Fundraising  -  Committee Structure

OBU High Achievers Evening

On Thursday 5th September, from 5.30-8.30pm in the Great Hall at the School, the SHS Old Boys Union is running a special evening of presentations and discussions for current senior students and parents to mix with, and seek advice from, successful old boys in Business, Law, Medicine & Health, Engineering & Science, Public Service, Sport and other fields. Speakers include

• Dr Louis Wang - Year 12 Dux in 2000 and winner of the UNSW Medal for Medicine
• Bruce Ramsay - School Captain in 1977, winner of the Honour Cap for his all-round talents and now a Partner with legal firm, Herbert Smith Freehills
• Adam Magro -  1988, played rugby for Australia and now, while working in funds management, undertaking his PhD in Economics
• Nick Armstrong - School Captain in 2001, Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney and CEO and co-founder of COzero, which was ranked first in the BRW Fast 100 growth companies in 2011 with revenue growth of over 600%.

August  P&C General Meeting

Thank you to the parents who attended the August P&C General Meeting.  Topics of discussion included detailed updates on the Governors Centre and Transport for NSW’s light rail project.  Both of these projects will have a significant impact on our school over the coming years and parents are encouraged to attend General meetings to keep informed on these and other issues.

The next P&C general meeting will be held on Monday 9 September at 7:30pm in the staff common room.

Cash Register Opening Times

Due to the change of bell times the cash register will be closed at 2.00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays. Before school and first break register times (be it recess or lunch) remain the same on these days.

There are now 2 cash registers open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday. The second register is located opposite the Deputy’s Office (Mr Barris).
