High Talent
Congratulations to Kushaal Vyas who was runner-up in the national Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition. Great writing test results were achieved in ICAS by Year 9 boys James Goh and Vishal Karnamadakala who were equal top score for NSW and ACT, earning a UNSW medal. Well done to Flidon Wang who placed 3rd in the U16 single scull at the JB Sharp Regatta. Steve Comninos and Ray Fang finished second in the 45km Head of the Hunter marathon rowing event. Shawn Noronha competed in a single scull! $400 was raised for the Cancer Council. Great job, boys!  At this year’s NSW Schools Spectacular, Oliver Kirk (Year 12) will be a featured artist – a notable achievement. Congratulations to Harry Park who was selected in the NSW All Schools U15Volleyball team.

Hume Barbour debating success
Our PDC Hume Barbour debating team successfully defended the proposition- ’that we should end the Northern Territory intervention’- in the final of the competition against Penrith High School. Our boys won narrowly in a unanimous decision against a quality team with two stand-out debaters. The winning team was: Wilber Koslowski (first), Kushaal Vyas (2nd), Connor Robinson (3rd) and Albert Chau (4th). High has now won the trophy 25 times since the competition began in 1930.

Rugby Rule Change
Parents of boys who are U14 should be aware that the AAGPS Committee has agreed that if they weigh 50kgs or less, they are permitted to play 13s rugby. Consequently, if your son is smallish but keen on his rugby, there is a safer alternative for him to learn the game by playing down next year.

DEC Student Feedback survey
High has been selected to participate in a Department of Education and Communities pilot of the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW pilot project is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

The survey will provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. An information sheet and consent form about the survey is included in this edition of High Notes. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 16th August. If you are happy for your son to complete the survey, please do not complete the consent form.

I want to assure you that the survey is anonymous and students cannot be identified by their responses. The survey is conducted online and will take around 30 minutes to complete. It will be online between 19 August and 6 September. Two Award Scheme points will be credited to all boys who successfully complete the survey.  I urge students to have their say about many aspects of school life, using this professional, anonymous survey instrument.

Dear Parents and Carers

Our school is taking part in a pilot of the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things.

The survey is completed on-line and will be run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

The survey is anonymous to protect students’ privacy. Students will be provided with a secure log-in and password. The school will not see the responses from individual students. The survey takes around 30 minutes to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours./p>

AAs well as schools getting student feedback, the Department of Education and Communities, through the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE), will run a research project to look at state-wide patterns of student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The research will look at how these things impact on student outcomes, including academic performance. Individual students or schools will not be identified, and all information will be handled in accordance with the requirements of relevant privacy legislation.

This research will help schools in New South Wales to better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will also help teachers and principals discuss what works to improve student outcomes./p>

PParticipating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child/children will not take part if either you or your child/children disagree.

If you do not want your child/children to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form by Friday 16th August.

SBHS Debating

Congratulations to the Year 12 PDC Team who won the Year 12 PDC Competition today and thus allow us to have the Hume Barbour trophy at SBHS for the 25th year since the competition began in 1930.  A massive thank you is in order for Dominic Bowes who has coached this team to success this year. I have produced a display of photos outside the History staff room for anyone who was unable to come and see this prestigious event.

Last Friday was an eventful night with King’s forfeiting Juniors at 5.30, but our boys were able to debate socially and get feedback from GPS adjudicators anyway. In the Seniors our Thirds were unsuccessful, but the Seconds and Firsts won their debates on the topic  " That we should re-elect the Federal Government ". It was good to see Juniors watching the Seniors as this is beneficial for Seniors (who get a big audience) and for Juniors (who get to watch Seniors debate).

This week we are at home to Shore and next week we are away at Riverview.

A huge thank you to Eden Freiberg who bought a whole new set of crockery for the DSG. The Jamie Oliver platters will add flair to our debating suppers which are already looking so wonderful this season.

We have an important change of date to announce for the Debating Dinner which will now be at 6pm on Sunday 8th September.  I do hope this does not adversely affect anyone.

Debating this week saw some extremely phenomenal and encouraging results.

Starting from the Friday debates against King’s, unfortunately our 3rds lost a narrow debate on “That we should re-elect the Federal Government”. However, on the same topic our 1sts and 2nds saw some success. Our 2nds continued their undefeated run with an interesting interpretation of the topic, arguing that we should hold an election now rather than later.

After a disappointing and extremely unlucky debate against Scots last week, our 1st Grade side won a close debate with all 3 speakers producing a nuanced and complex case. A major thank you to all the boys, particular the juniors who stayed back to watch the 1sts. This is extremely encouraging, not only for the 1st grade debaters but also a great experience for junior debaters to hone their skills. Some of the best debaters at High made it a point to watch seniors debate and it has done wonders for them.

On an even more ecstatic note, our Year 12 PDC debating team consisting of Wilber Koslowski, Khushaal Vyas, Connor Robinson and Albert Chau won the Hume Barbour Debating Competition on Monday at the University of Sydney against a strong Penrith High School team. This team has been working extremely hard for this and ultimately saw it pay off meaning the lovely trophy will adorn our school for another consecutive year! A huge thank you to Ms Powell and Ms Rigby is in order for driving the boys to various parts of Sydney for their debates in this competition. A big thank you to the 40 boys from High who turned up to support our Year 12 debaters and I trust it would have been a great experience had by all.

This week we are up against Shore and we wish all Year groups the best for this upcoming fixture!

Tip of the week: SBHS has honed the talents of some of the best speakers in the GPS. It would be a shame if junior debaters missed the opportunity to watch our seniors speak. It provides a great learning experience and a tip that will surely transform you into even better speakers than you already are!

Public Speaking Update

Sydney Boys High students continue to impress the wider community with their intelligent and articulate speeches that they have been giving at various public speaking competitions. Last term both Khushaal Vyas (Year 12) and Andrew McNaughton (Year 9) spoke at State Parliament House in the finals for Rostrum Voice of the Youth. Khushaal won the State final and represented both High and NSW in Canberra where he was named runner-up.

A special mention must also go to Lokesh Sharma (Year 11), who is to be congratulated for his fine efforts in public speaking so far this year. Lokesh was both a regional finalist in the Rostrum Public Speaking competition and runner-up in the Beyond Blue competition, also held last term.

Finally, Vishal Karnamadakala (Year 9) has made it through to the regional finals in the Legacy Junior competition. We wish him all the best for when he speaks next Monday 12th August.

ENRICHED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT – THE BABIC COLLECTION
Conversely over the past 10 years as digitisation has changed the focus of our 2 libraries towards managing online resources, the donations of Old Boys in particular, our staff and our parents, have kept enriching our book collection. 

With very limited space in the Senior Library for books as well as 120 boys, the Junior Library has taken on the role of book repository to some extent and contains many reference books also suitable for senior students.  Our 2 Libraries run on one database and with the physical separation of the Libraries, the use on online search via Library Enquiry from your School Portal at home and in remote classrooms on your laptops, enables students and staff to locate resources.  These resources will include web pages vetted by the DET, Links for Learning which are online teaching resources and referrals to the broadcast materials (documentaries) faculty staff are capturing on the W Drive as well as the book collections of both Libraries.

Last week I mentioned the valuable Babic Collection just donated to the 2 Libraries and this week I thought I would show you a snapshot of these lovely popular non-fiction resources we are adding to our libraries as a result of this donation.  We are very grateful to Greg Babic.

SBHS ‘Bring Your Own Device’ Program

In 2014 students in Year 9 will be requested to bring their own computing device to school every day.

This Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program replaces the Digital Education Revolution scheme that has ended.

What is BYOD?

Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, is a technological trend in education and in the corporate world.

BYOD recognises that technology and choices about technology are very much personal.

BYOD acknowledges technology in education means more than meeting specific curriculum requirements.

BYOD is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances.

How will it work?

In 2014 students in Year 9 will be expected to bring their own computing device to school every day.

We will be making recommendations later this year as to the model of device you may choose to bring.

Or you can bring something of your own choosing that meets our Device Specification.

There is also some software that you have must on the device. In most cases there are free options for software.

You will be required to sign a User Charter that sets out how the device can be used at school.

A member of the school staff, the Bring Your Own Device Service Officer, will be available to answer questions and to give assistance.

However, the school does not manage, support, own or warranty the device - it's your device.

HSC PERFORMANCE MUSIC TRIAL
The HSC music performance trials were held over two days this week with the seniors preparing for their performance exams. This was a great opportunity for the boys to gain more performance experience and conquer their nerves. The students performed at a high standard and are continuing to work diligently. Well Done!

Composition Recording dates: Thursday 23rd & Friday 24th of August (compositions are to be completed and a final copy is to be handed in to Ms Miller (very latest) Friday 9th of August as performers and ensembles need time to practise).

ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM (unless stated otherwise). Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% of ATTENDANCE is required. PLEASE REMEMBER to pack up after rehearsals (tidy up the room/and stands back on rack). Please remember PRACTICE DAILY, if only for 20 minutes is required for you to develop your awesome musical skills and make your music tutor happy. Practice makes PERFECT!!!!!

“Sleeping Rough” for World Vision

On Wednesday 7th August ten boys stayed overnight at school, giving up food, water and a comfortable night’s rest, for their 40 Hour Famine. The boys, who are part of a social justice group at the school, endeavoured to push the parameters of 40 Hour Famine, not only to raise awareness within the school community but to provide a platform that is different from typical campaigns for the famine.

After weeks of planning and campaigning and expressions of interest from media, the boys were finally ready to give up all food, water and usual shelter, for 12 hours. Despite the program not being for the full 40 hours, it gave students, drawn from Years 9 to 11, a new and challenging method of raising funds for impoverished children in developing countries. These boys avoided the temptations to break their fast, finding affinity with students who fast for Ramadan, and an understanding of how difficult it is.

The picturesque city skyline viewed from the school and the beautiful courtyard inside gave some relief to the boys as they prepared for a night on gym mats under the night sky. When the rain kicked in, eyebrows were raised and hope was almost lost, but enough shelter was found under the arches of the walkway and the event kicked on, watched over by Ms Ayre and then Mr Phillipson.

At about 11:30 after all the video-logging and professional photos were taken, the temperature dropped. We consequently cuddled-up, and wrapped ourselves in anticipation of the coming morning. As the sun broke, we awoke to a distinctive American accent (Mr Phillipson). The sunrise gave some relief with promise of food, and we knew that whether we had raised $50 or $500 we had made a difference.

We hope that our overnight event will encourage other students at the school to take part in the 40 Hour Famine at home during the weekend 16th to 18th August.

Yao Ming’s former coach’s visiting Sydney
SHS VS Shang Hai DSS

During the holidays Li Zhang-Min (Ex-NBA Star Yao Ming’s former coach) visited Sydney with his two Chinese youth Basketball teams from Shanghai Xu Hui District Sports School.

A Sydney Boys team was made up with 16 enthusiastic players. They formed this team by themselves for the love of this sport.  These team members included Sydney Boys High future stars; Byron Chen, Li Fang Chen, Daniel Wang, Carl Wang, Andrew Li, Jeffrey Zheng and Kurt Wang. The team played well, cooperatively and with strong team spirit.  After the game Kurt Wang stated that “This has one of the most memorable experiences for us all.”

I believe it was an extremely beneficial opportunity for the boys to play with these Chinese basketball players and learn from their professional coach Li Zhang-Ming.

From the Canteen

Our canteen is one of the few remaining school canteens which is not privately owned and where all profits are returned to the school.  All the boys benefit when the money is spent on improvements to their learning environment and facilities.  This would not be possible without the invaluable help of our volunteer parents.

One of our volunteer mums Minhua Zhang has set up an automatic reminder system to email volunteers to remind them of their rostered day.  This is a very helpful service so as our Canteen Managers Karen and Tracey are not left short handed.  Thank you Minhua for doing this, it is much appreciated.  In order to assist with this, can everyone make sure that the canteen has your current email address.

With the Prefects beginning their Trial HSC exams this week, it is most important that you attend on your rostered day, as we will not have the Prefects to help during the busy periods.

15Bs Report
2013 was a year of major improvements for the Bs. With some new players joining volleyball, we had to adapt to the new teams in time for the games against Grammar and the up-coming Volleyball NSW All Schools Tournament. We managed to achieve this, beating Grammar every single time we met; usually in straight sets but Grammar did sometimes put up a great match. However, in the first tournament, we achieved a meagre result, only managing to  win once, against our 14Bs. The second tournament was a huge turnaround for us. Even without any substitutions, we had a great result in the Round Matches, only losing to Kelso whilst managing to beat Rooty Hill, Wycliffe and our 14Bs. In the Semi-Finals, we just lost against our 15As, only losing by one point when the match had to come to point difference. In the decider for 3rd and 4th we played against our 14 All-Stars. After winning the first set, the All-Stars managed to fight back and win the second set. The third set was very close, only just scraping the victory 15-12, giving us 3rd place, one of the best results 15Bs as achieved to date. Overall, 2013 has been a great year for us and I hope that in the future years Volleyball will get even better than it has been for us and future volleyball players to come.
