Public SpeakingLast Saturday night saw two of our students compete in the state finals for Rostrum, Voice of Youth. This took place in the Legislative Assembly Chamber of the State Parliament House. Andrew McNaughton in Year 9 represented High in the junior division while Khushaal Vyas in Year 12 spoke in the seniors.
While both boys spoke exceptionally well, Khushaal was named the outright winner of the senior
division. He is now off to Canberra next month to represent the school, and NSW, in the national
finals. Making it to the state finals alone is a huge achievement and both students are to be
congratulated for their fine efforts in public speaking.

Australian Scout AwardKai Matsumoto (Year 9) received the Australian Scout Medallion on 9 June 2013. Kai has been involved in a variety of community and volunteer work through Scouting for the last 10 years and has been the Chairperson of the NSW Scout Youth Council.

Proud School PilotOpportunity to share your views on the Proud Schools PilotDear Parent, As you may be aware, Sydney Boys High School is one of 12 schools participating in the NSW Proud Schools Pilot. The Proud Schools Pilot is an initiative of the NSW Department of Education and Communities, which aims to support schools in providing a safe environment for all students, including those who are same sex attracted and gender diverse. The pilot was initiated following a decade of research by La Trobe University, which indicated that same sex attracted and gender questioning young people experience better education, health and wellbeing outcomes when they feel safe and supported at school*. The pilot is supported by current Education Minister Adrian Piccoli. We would like to provide all parents with the opportunity to comment on this pilot, and on our schools approach to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for same sex attracted and gender diverse students. SBHS DebatingWe have come to the end of Term 2 now which means we are 2/3 of the way through the debating season. A big congratulations to the Year 12 PDC team who are now at Semi Final stage in the Year 12 PDC competition. I wanted to take this opportunity to ensure that everyone is clear about Award Points. I will allocate award points at the start of Term 4. The maximum number of award points for debating in all Years is 30 points. The award points for coaching are based upon a regular attendance at debating through the whole 3 term season. There are 20 allocated for Year 11 and Year 12 and 15 allocated for Years 7-10. In addition Award Points are given for debating (1 per after-school competition debate) and for chairing (1 per after-school competition debate). PDC team members get 5 points however far they get in the competition. In addition I sometimes offer award points for other areas such as those boys who came to watch the Year 12 Eastside Final got award points (and I can be flexible with these and give them to you from High Spirit which actually means you can go above your maximum of 30!) It is important for you to keep a personal record of the amount of debates etc that you take part in. I, of course, have a record but sometimes there are last minutes changes to the team make up or someone can't make it to Chair and these changes may not be recorded because it is so busy. At the start of Term 4 I will put the Award Points up on the notice board and ask students to check their allocation. Any problems MUST be reported to me then before I submit them onto the system. I am still concerned about the lack of student and parental email contacts I have. which is a wonderful night to mark an end to the season.
ASX Share Market GameSemester 1Over 400 students participated in the Semester 1 Share Market Game no doubt motivated by the great success our students have had in recent years, reaping significant financial rewards for themselves and the Social Sciences Faculty. Unfortunately many of our players were ambushed by the bears and were unable to recover sufficiently to win prizes this time. This Game has been an interesting one – we saw the market fall during the first weeks of the Game, it then slowly moved upwards with some days being more volatile than others. By the end, the All Ordinaries wasn’t far from where it started.
Each student had a nominal $50,000 to invest.

Football: The World GameHigh Football takes part in historyOn November 16th 2005, Australian Football created history by qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 32 years, defeating Uruguay to a sold-out crowd at Stadium Australia. 8 years later, and the Socceroos were at it again, needing a win to guarantee their ticket to Brazil. In conjunction with Football Australia, 40 boys were given the opportunity to participate in a pre-match lap of the hallowed turf, getting a perspective of the stadium traditionally reserved for a select few. With over 3500 students from schools all over NSW participating, it was truly a major spectacle and enjoyed by all. A big thanks to the staff of Mr Smith, Ms Evans, Ms Millar and Mr Jauregui for their assistance and to Football Australia for providing the opportunity. AAGPS NewsCongratulations go to Arjun Punekar (Yr 12), Michael Cui (Yr 11) and Daniel Arzani (Yr 9) for their selections in the combined AAGPS Representative squads last week. Arjun was selected to captain the 2nd XI team, but was later promoted to the 1st XI team – a great reward for his performance this year. Daniel became only the 3rd Year 9 boy ever to represent the AAGPS at 1st or 2nd XI level – a fantastic achievement and a base from which he can improve in the coming seasons. Melbourne Sports ExchangeA combined team of Year 10 and 11 boys was selected to represent football for the annual Sports Exchange between Sydney High and Melbourne High. With a collection of boys from the 1st and 2nd XI as well as some 16As players, it was a strong squad and the result was a fair reflection of the quality of the game with High running out victors 3-1. Played on Melbourne’s main oval, flowing football proved difficult due to the muddy pitch. However, High adapted better to the conditions and showed a higher level of skill to atone for last year’s defeat. Michael Cui (Yr 11) was awarded the man-of-the-match for another strong showing in defence, whilst Adil Nadir (Yr 10) and Jesse Cooper (Yr 11) provided the impetus going forward. CIS CupHigh progressed to round 3 of the CIS Cup Knockout by defeating a spirited Grammar team 4-2 in dour conditions last Wednesday. With constant rain in the lead-up to kick off, it looked like the fixture may need to be postponed until the all clear was finally given and High took full advantage, out-thinking and out-playing their traditional rivals. An excellent squad performance ushers High into round 3 to meet Newington College early next term. ENSEMBLE REHEARSALS ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM. (unless stated otherwise). Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% of ATTENDANCE is required. PLEASE REMEMBER to pack up after rehearsals (tidy up the room/and stands back on rack). EVERYONE needs to help and not left to one or two boys. THANKYOU boys for your co-operation! Please remember PRACTICE DAILY, if only for 20 minutes is required for you to develop your awesome musical skills and make your music tutor happy. Practice makes PERFECT!!!!! You need JavaScript enabled to view it SGHS-SBHS Joint P&C MeetingThank you to the parents who attended the SGHS-SBHS Joint P&C meeting last Wednesday evening in Campbell Hall in the Girls School. There was a strong turnout from both schools on a cold and wet evening to hear from Dr Ramesh Manocha on the benefits to students derived from the use of meditation techniques. Thank you to the SGHS staff and members of the P&C for their work in arranging this pleasant and informative evening. Our apologies for the mistake in previous High Notes which identified the venue as the Multi-Purpose Hall. Upcoming P&C General MeetingsAs advised last week, the next P&C general meeting will be held in Term 3 on Monday 12 August at 7:30pm in the Staff Common Room. Please take the opportunity to come along to at least one meeting a year to ensure the decisions of the P&C properly reflect the views of the parent body. For your information, issues that the SBHS P&C is involved in this year include: providing new SBHS decals (signage) for the school’s vehicles; organising the 2013 Year 12 exit survey; liaising with parents on Year group information evenings; improvements to the parent mentor scheme; changes to the management of parent contact details for co-curricular sub-committees; liaising with the Old Boys Union on a proposed OBU seminar later this year; and providing input into the GCEE project. The remaining P&C general meeting dates and times up to the end of the year are as follows:
