From the OfficeCash Register Opening TimesDue to the change of bell times the cash register will be closed at 2.00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays. Before school and first break register times (be it recess or lunch) remain the same on these days.
There are now 2 cash registers open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday. The second
register is located opposite the Deputy’s Office (Mr Barris).
SHS RowingNewington Regatta ResultsThis was a full regatta last Saturday with all 20 High crews racing. Regardless of the terrible weather, it was a good start to the year with improved times from the senior/Y10 crews, and some competitive racing from the Junior crews. All regatta entries and results can be found on the Rowing NSW website – Taree Summer Camp ReportAfter the success of last year’s trip to Taree, the Sydney Boys High Senior Rowers travelled up north in January in expectation of a tough 5 days of rowing. The Croker family were once again hospitable enough to let us use their facilities; camping outside their house, giving us electricity, shelter and amenities, and even giving us a tour of the oar factory. On arrival, the boys set up their tents, rigged up the boats and prepared for our first row in the sweltering heat of the nation’s highest recorded temperature. Throughout the week we raced and trained in combined crews, mixing the 1st VIII, 2nd VIII and 1st IV in every conceivable class of boat to challenge our skills and strengthen our teamwork and promote unity in the sheds. A real focus for our workloads was internal competition and race experience, with heavy workloads at dawn pitting members of the 1st VIII in long racing pieces against each other in fours and singles. These long, intense races designed by 1st VIII coach George Barris, sought to perfect our technique under pressure and fatigue, powering through physical and mental boundaries on the water. The 2nd VIII trained and worked mainly in single sculls under the watchful eye of our newly appointed Head Coach Beryl Crockford, who flogged them with time trials and 25km rows, improving their sculling technique and fitness immensely. Our 1st IV, comprised of new rowers, trained diligently in solitude on our early days in camp, before joining in our races and demonstrating levels of technique and boat speed well beyond expectations. Old boys Pravin Radhakrishnan and Gareth Deacon trained them in pairs and singles to improve their blade work and understanding of the rowing stroke.
Overall the camp was a great success. The hard work and long, exhausting hours improved all
rowers individually and brought them together as crews. Despite the heat, the weather stayed calm
and offered flat water for our training. Special thanks must be made to the entire Croker family
for letting us camp, the wonderful parents who gave up their time to travel up with us and cook
our food as well as the coaches and the MIC of rowing, Julie Blomberg.
Basketball: Shootin' HoopsAAGPS 1st Grade
AAGPS 2nd Grade
1st Grade and 2nd Grade suffered close losses to Iggies this week, although this still places High on the same rankings in both the 1st and 2nd Grade tables. Last Saturday was a trial game against Iggies so only As and Bs played. High 1st Grade is still currently 4th on the AAGPS 1st Grade table, a very strong result that places High above the halfway line by more than 88 points For High. 2nd Grade suffered their first loss of the season by 2 points last Saturday, but this still places them equal 1st in the GPS. This Saturday is a full school match-up against Newington, good luck to all teams in this matchup and make sure you cheer on High1st and 2nd Grade!

Swimming NewsSchool Swimming Carnival 2013The school swimming carnival was held on Monday the 4th February at Des Renford Pool, Maroubra. The threat of bad weather did not hamper the enthusiasm for the carnival which was well attended with over 900 boys showing up. It was great to see so many boys participating in so many events. This year, we have discovered some extraordinary talent, especially in the intermediate years, with many school records broken. All results/records can be viewed on the school website listed below:

The GPS relay (4x100m) medleyA promising HIGH team was unable to overcome a strong Newington team who went on to win the event. Congratulations to them. However, SBHS finished a pleasing 3rd. Well done, boys. GPS Captains dinner (St Ignatius)Monday night 4th Feb 2013 Congratulations to George Dzero, Dominic Mah (Co Captains) and Darren Chien (Vice captain) who represented our school with such pride at the captains dinner on Monday night. They were all fine ambassadors for the school. George’s speech emphasised the importance of training, HIGH’s improvement in swimming, commitment and never give up attitude and always perform to the best of your ability. Well done.
SBHS DebatingWelcome back debating families and a special hello to all the new debaters and their families who are joining us in Year 7 and in other year groups. Last year nearly 250 students took part in the Debating Program at High. It is the biggest school program in NSW. In 2013 our Year 12s Debaters won the Premiers Debating Challenge for the whole of NSW and our Year 11 Debaters won the GPS competition. It is very exciting to be part of debating at High and I would say that last year we had our most successful in terms of junior debaters supporting senior debaters on Friday evening competition nights. Over the next few weeks I will explain the Debating Program, but for today just a few important dates. Our first parking event is on 10th February (2-5pm). Parking is an important way for us to raise funds for debating. We get allocated a number parking events in the year. These events are run with the help of volunteering parents and boys. It is a fun activity to do as a family. You will either be accepting money and issuing tickets or showing the drivers where to park. There is plenty of help and support available for those parents and boys who are new to parking. If you are able to help, please respond to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The first week of debating coaching is on 15th February from 3.25 until 4.45 for Juniors and until 5 for Seniors. You must make sure that you have signed up on the debating notice board (outside the Drama Room) for a place in a debating group. An important event for parents is the 28th February. On that date we will be holding a Debating Supporters Group meeting form 6pm until 7pm and then from 7pm to 8pm will be an Information Evening for Parents so that they can find out about the Debating Program at High. Please come along if you have any unanswered questions or would like to find out more about Debating at High. Most importantly if your son is involved or thinking of getting involved in debating this year then you must sign up for the Debating emails. Each week I communicate with boys and parents via email about the up and coming week and give out important notices. Please email me on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. If neither you nor your son is on the emailing list then it is highly likely that he will miss out on important opportunities that arise in debating.

to working with the boys, the parents, the coaches and the PDC teachers for another year of
success.
From the CanteenWelcome to all our volunteers for 2013, in particular all the new parents to the school. Canteen provides a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents, find out what is happening at the school and provides significant contributions to the P&C to fund worthy projects which benefit all of our sons. If you can spare a day a month to help out please contact the canteen on Ph: 9360 4027. Your sons will love to see you there. Don’t miss out on food you want! Keen to try out the fabulous range of food in our canteen but keep missing out?

Music NotesWelcome Back!Hope you have had a wonderful and relaxing break over the holidays and are refreshed to start an exciting new year with us in the music program. Ensemble rehearsals have commenced as of this week. Please check the 2013 music ensemble schedule as there have been minor changes from last year. Australian Youth Music Festival 2013During the holidays, Oliver Kirk (Year 12) performed at the Opening Ceremony of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Oliver was a featured soloist in a number of musical items. The event was truly a spectacular event which was televised internationally. It was a vibrant and exciting celebration of youth, designed to welcome Athletes from all countries. Congratulations to Oliver on such an outstanding and sophisticated performance!!! Marching BandMarching Band has commenced this week. Many boys have forgotten that all ensembles have started this week and that includes Marching Band. Marching Band rehearsals are on Tuesday after school from 3:30-4:30pm & Friday morning 7:45-8:45am. We only have 8 weeks to refine the music and have you marching for Anzac Day. Ensemble RehearsalsAll ensembles have commenced as of this week. Morning rehearsals start at 7:45am unless stated by the music teacher/tutor conducting the ensemble. All rolls will be taken and remember this will go towards your Awards System. You are ONLY allowed to miss on 2 REHEARSALS per term. BE CAREFUL!!! Please remember to come to all ensembles on time and help set up. Most importantly, please remember to PACK UP. Stands on stand racks and not left on the side, chairs stacked up. Thanks boys! First Round Auditions were held Calling for expressions of interest from all Musicians, Dancers, Actors, Singers and…PERFORMERS! Only students from Years 9, 10, 11 & 12 Call Back Auditions will occur on Tuesday 12 February at the Great Hall. Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday afternoons and some Sundays in Campbell Hall, SGHS. Attendance at all rehearsals is compulsory and not negotiable. A nominal participation fee will apply to successful candidates to help cover costs. The production will be staged in Week 6, Term 2 2013.
