High Notes, Vol 14 No 19, June 21 2013

From the Principal
High Talent
Congratulations to Brendan Kong (Year 11) on his selection in
the NSW U-18 Ice Hockey team to compete in the national tournament. Well done to Shang Lin (Year
8) for his ICAS Competition Computer Skills Test medal for the highest score in NSW and ACT.
Congratulations to Wenbo Gong, Jonathan Freiberg and Chris Ketkeo who have been accepted into the
2013 State Drama Camp. Thank you to Jerry Phillipson and the 63 blood donors for helping out the
Red Cross. Well done to our Football representatives who made the Combined GPS squad –
Arjun Punekar (Year 12), Michael Cui (Year 11) and Daniel Arzani (Year 9). Last week our boys
reached the final six in the mixed-ages division of the Kevin Lee Latin Quiz held at North Sydney
Boys High. The team comprised: Liam Jepson and Thomas Shortridge (Year 9), and Roy Yi, Hugh
Bartley, Kieran Shivakumaruun, Sanishka Balasooriya, George Ge, and Ramachandran Kaniyur (Year
8). This was a very good effort in refined company and in an unfamiliar competition format more
like a quiz show. In the Theatre Sports competition, 36 teams competed for a place in the Grand
Final to be held in July. The Intermediate Team, (Noah Fowler, Jun Park, Thomas Nassif and Peter
Ryan) lost on a tiebreak to PLC, but the Senior Team (Jonathan Freiberg, Wenbo Gong, Noah Fowler
and Derek Sun) won their way through to the final in convincing fashion. Congratulations, boys!
‘Grease’ definitely was the word!
Congratulations to Jennie
Rohr and Elizabeth Surbey for their direction and production of Grease. The music
directors Emily Irvine and Rose Saunders did a great job, along with the choreographers, Anika
Glennie and Jodie Kannar. It was a very vibrant and entertaining show. Our boys who had major
roles were: Jonathan Freiberg (Danny), Noah Fowler (Kenickie), Kai Matsumoto (Doody), William
Chang (Roger), Wenbo Gong (Sonny), Daniel Ahn (Eugene), Derek Sun (Vince Fontaine), Michael Chang
(Johnny Casino) and Hayden Rabone (Teen Angel). Boys in the chorus were: Varunan Murugananthan,
Stephen Ngo, Peter Ryan, Jens Waring and Angus Wu. SBHS band members were: Riley Irwin, Brendan
Hancox, Darren Taing and Steve Comninos. There were other boys in the stage crew and support
personnel. Thank you to everyone involved.
The joint production was a great demonstration of the energy released when our two schools
collaborate to work towards a shared outcome. People don’t always appreciate just how many
people give a great deal of their time to make these productions possible. I hope that our
growing tradition of joint productions can help build a broader and deeper relationship of shared
understanding and mutual trust.
June 30 and the Governors Centre
With the Governors Centre joint project
moving into serious planning stage in which we start to spend substantial sums of money on site
investigations and design, it is even more important for the SBHS community and Old Boy
well-wishers to think about making their tax deductible donations to the ̽»¨ÊÓƵ
Building Fund. This is a once in a generation project that will require a high percentage of our
community to support if it is to be completed. Make your contribution before June 30 for the
taxation benefits. Alternatively, sign up for the monthly giving scheme alongside 150 other
monthly donors as a relatively painless way of helping the fundraising effort.
Community Services Committee Leadership
In the transition phase between new
leaders taking over from Year 12 boys who will cease formal attendance in term 4, the leader
mentors will provide induction, coaching and support to their successors. The new leadership
group for this important and busy committee is: Howard Gu, Chairperson (Shuming Wang), Lokesh
Sharma, Secretary (James Chan) and William Wu/Glanden Zheng, Treasurer (Frank Zhang). I know the
boys taking over the roles will do a great job in 2014.
Parent Teacher Nights
The first Parent Teacher night for Years 9 and 12 was
held this week. It was well attended and ran smoothly in the Great Hall. Parents who did not get
an opportunity to speak to one of their son’s teachers are invited to email or call the
school with a request for an interview or communication by email. Parent Teacher Night for Years
7 and 11 is on Monday, June 24, commencing at 15:00.

Proud Schools Pilot Parent Survey
Opportunity to share your views on the Proud Schools Pilot
Dear Parent,
As you may be aware, Sydney Boys High School is one of 12 schools participating in the NSW Proud
Schools Pilot. The Proud Schools Pilot is an initiative of the NSW Department of Education and
Communities, which aims to support schools in providing a safe environment for all students,
including those who are same sex attracted and gender diverse.
The pilot was initiated following a decade of research by La Trobe University, which indicated
that same sex attracted and gender questioning young people experience better education, health
and wellbeing outcomes when they feel safe and supported at school*. The pilot is supported by
current Education Minister Adrian Piccoli.
We would like to provide all parents with the opportunity to comment on this pilot, and on our
schools approach to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for same sex attracted
and gender diverse students. If you would like to provide feedback, you can do so by visiting
this web-portal:
*Writing Themselves in 3 - The third national study on the sexual health and wellbeing of same
sex attracted and gender questioning young people (Hillier, L., et al. 2010).
For any further information call Mr John Walker, Head Teacher Student Welfare.
Kevin Lee Latin Quiz
Last week on Wednesday the 12th of June, Sydney Boys High entered a team in the mixed-age
division of the Kevin Lee Quiz held at North Sydney Boys High. Our team finished in the top six.
The quiz is held annually to commemorate the life and work of Professor Kevin Lee, a former
Professor of Classics at the University of Sydney.
Students had to answer questions on Latin vocabulary, grammar, derivations, mythology, culture
and …. Harry Potter! When asked to give the name of an ancient Roman poet, our students
answered, ‘Pliny the Younger’, to which the quiz master replied, ‘That’s
class!’ The whole event was both fun and intellectually stimulating. Other participating
schools included Kinross Wolaroi, Frensham, Shore and Sydney Girls High.

From the Canteen
It is with great pleasure that the canteen committee has been able to give the P&C
$40,000.00, the first instalment of our 2013 donation. This money is
raised from our sons’ canteen purchases and made possible because of the fantastic
management of the canteen by Karen and Tracey. We are one of the few remaining school canteens
which is not privately owned and where all profits are returned to the school. All the boys
benefit when the money is spent on improvements to their learning environment and facilities.
This would not be possible without the invaluable help of our volunteer parents.
Apologies if some items are not available this week as we run down supplies before the holidays.
Thank you to our volunteers last week.
Mon: Dongmin Zhao, Yoshe Leong, Usha Arvind, Jeannie Vye.
Tues: Pauline Chan, Annette Ng, Todd May, Melissa Wang.
Wed: Faidha Razmi, Jenny Chiu, Cindy Tseu.
Thurs: Pit Trent, Xing Ping Zhang, Annie Jiang.
Fri: Kati Westlake, Connie Tai, Theothe Tsirbas.

Booking interviews with your son’s teachers
This year we will again use a web based electronic scheduling system for arranging
interviews. This produces better results for all participants, especially more compact time
schedules for both parents and teachers. The system works as follows –
- On Monday 17 June all parents of boys in Year 7 and 11 were sent by email details of the
scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at .
- On Wednesday 19 June all parents of boys in Years 8 and 10 were sent by email details of the
scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at .
- This email will be sent to the address currently held by the school. If you have not
received this email by the following day (18 or 20 June) or, if your email address has changed
from what had been previously advised to the school, you should notify the school at
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
advising of this. Please indicate your son's name and roll class or date of birth so that the
information can be forwarded to you.
- On the Edval website you will see your son’s teachers listed and you will be able to
select those with whom you require an interview. (If you hover over a teacher’s name, the
subject involved will be shown.) At the same time you can indicate your availability
between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
- Once the majority of parents have requested interviews, the overall schedule will be
generated by the school and your individual schedule should be available for you to download and
print from two days before the interviews.
- Periods will be shortened on the day. Period 5 will finish at 2:35pm on each day. School
Special buses will run to normal schedules and there will be supervision in the Junior Quad of
boys waiting for these buses.
-
Interviews should not exceed five minutes’ duration. If there is
insufficient time, a further appointment may be made for a later date, or contact by telephone
arranged.

SBHS Debating
I am pleased to announce the GPS and PDC debating teams for 2013. Congratulations to the
successful students and commiserations to those of you who were unsuccessful this time around. In
many Year groups we had unprecedented numbers of students trialling and for some Year groups the
quality of the debating was so high that it took an extra-long period of time to decide on teams.
I would like to thank the coaches who have been involved in the trials. You will notice that each
Year group has organised things a little differently – some with teams already selected and
some with squads. These decisions have been made by the coaching coordinators who have done an
outstanding, professional job within a very short time frame and I am confident that they have
made the best arrangements to give us optimum opportunities for success in the GPS competition.

High vs Riverview
The first of the GPS games showed the results of many weeks of hard training, with a few wins, a
few draws and many other close games. The highlight of the day was the 1st XV who came back from
7-0 down to draw the game at 7-7.
Team of the week – 14As – A strong attacking effort meant they could
always stay in front of their opposition.
Play of the week – Owen Duffy’s pressure conversion to level the
game in 1st grade.

National School Championships, Brisbane
On Saturday the 15th of June James Siu (Yr 7) and John Tian (Yr 8) went to represent NSW in the
Brisbane Under 15s in sabre and épée respectively.
In sabre, James had an easy time defeating the four people in his poule, the best sabrer only
managing to score 3 points out of 5. He then received a bye for his first round of direct
eliminations. Then, he skilfully dispatched his next opponent in the semi finals with a score of
15-7, an 8 point lead. His next unlucky opponent did not have much of a chance either, losing
15-5 to James in the finals. His gold medal is very well deserved; the result of his effort
during the competition.
In épée, John had a harder time. The first blow was that the intermediates (Under
15s) were placed with the seniors (Under 17s) in the poules. However, he managed to win 3 out of
4 in the poules giving him 3rd place at the conclusion of the poules. John went on to fence an
easy opponent in the first round, winning 15-6. In the semi finals, John was against one of his
best friends during fencing and won 15-8. The finals lasted a full 9 minutes, 11 counting breaks.
The result at the end was 10-10. This led to the final session of 1 minute in which a fencer had
to score a point. This is commonly known has a priority bout, for if no fencer had scored at the
end of the minute, the fencer with priority would win. Luckily, John received priority and wore
out his opponent, giving a 10-10 win to John and taking gold for NSW.
Overall, an excellent effort and result from the boys of High, with two gold medals in the Under
15 national competition held in Brisbane.
