From the Principal

High Talent
Well done to our Eastside Debating team (Wilber Koslowski, Khushaal Vyas, Connor Robinson and Albert Chau) who finally defeated their nemesis, SGHS in the final last Friday. In the FED debating Final, Year 9 (Max Koslowski, Albert Yang, Thomas Shortridge and Thomas Nguyen) were successful also. Given that High runs multiple teams and rotates members, the whole program is showing great strength and depth in debating. Congratulations to all teams who competed. Geoffrey Gerlach was selected in the All Schools team basketball team. Congratulations, Geoff! Well done to Kevin Robinson (Year 10) who has been selected in the NSW Under 16 CHS Volleyball team. Thank you to Jerry Phillipson, Eamon Kelly, the mufti day volunteers and to the boys who gave to the Boggabilla Central School project. The day raised $2113.50 which will be useful in restoring the agricultural education program at Boggabilla.

Tax Time and the Governors Centre Project
We are at the stage of appointing a Project Manager to move the design and DA application process along for the Joint Project. High will need to have its finance in place sometime in 2014 as we expect to secure a DA by mid-year and the construction phase will be ready to begin, subject to a full deposit of the contract costs in advance. We need everybody’s help to get there. Thank you to the 600 families who have donated so far and to the 130+ people who are using our ‘monthly giving scheme’ to help. If you have been thinking about making a donation but haven’t gotten around to it yet – now is the time! In the month of June donors get maximum benefit from making tax deductible donations if they promptly lodge their tax returns in July. Don’t let down those who have already donated. The High community needs to step up its support for the project right now!

Reports and Parent Teacher Nights
Students in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 should have their reports. If parents could talk with them about these reports before coming to Parent Teacher Night – Years 9 and 12 for June 18; Years 7 and 11 for June 24; Years 8 and 10 for June 26 – it would lead to a more informed conversation with teachers. I still have too many reports left over from the four Years. Urge your son to come and collect his report, please!

Grease is the word!
The joint production of Grease with SGHS is running next week from Thursday, June 13 until Saturday, June 15 staged in Campbell Hall at SGHS. A great deal of effort has gone into this production which I am sure will be very entertaining. It is a very rewarding exercise for the two schools to collaborate so closely on a major undertaking. Give the boys and girls your support by booking a family ticket to go and see the show.

Painting and carpeting
In recent weeks the 2012-13 DEC maintenance budget of some $67k has been utilised to paint corridors, ceilings and classrooms and to carpet stairwells and rooms. The main building now looks much smarter in its internal appearance. The 2013-14 maintenance assessment will be carried out soon.

Security
An extra double gate was installed at the Moore Park West fence to facilitate a more rapid evacuation from the site in case of emergency. The security gate at the corner of the UTS gym has been reinstated and a post and chain set up at the corner of the tennis courts near gate 1. We need to secure our site against the large number of users of Bat and Ball and Moore Park West (and commuters and occasional campervan squatters) who feel they have an entitlement to park on our site. Parking control will be made easier as the site can be opened in stages to accommodate traffic flows. There will be inconvenience caused, for which I apologise to parents and regular users of our site. However, we need to be able to guarantee that when we want to use our parking capacity, it is available.

Booking interviews with your son’s teachers

This year we will again use a web based electronic scheduling system for arranging interviews.  This produces better results for all participants, especially more compact time schedules for both parents and teachers.  The system works as follows –

• On Tuesday 11 June all parents of boys in Years 9 and 12 will be sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at .
• On Monday 17 June all parents of boys in Year 7 and 11 will be sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at .
• On Wednesday 19 June all parents of boys in Years 8 and 10 will be sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at .

 

• This email will be sent to the address currently held by the school.  If you have not received this email by the following day (12, 18 or 20 June) or, if your email address has changed from what had been previously advised to the school, you should notify the school at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it advising of this. Please indicate your son's name and roll class or date of birth so that the information can be forwarded to you.
• On the Edval website you will see your son’s teachers listed and you will be able to select those with whom you require an interview. (If you hover over a teacher’s name, the subject involved will be shown.)  At the same time you can indicate your availability between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
• Once the majority of parents have requested interviews, the overall schedule will be generated by the school and your individual schedule should be available for you to download and print from two days before the interviews.
• Boys from all Years will be dismissed from class at the conclusion of Period 4 on each day.  School Special buses will run to normal schedules and there will be supervision in the Junior Quad of boys waiting for these buses.
• Interviews should not exceed five minutes’ duration.  If there is insufficient time, a further appointment may be made for a later date, or contact by telephone arranged.

SBHS Debating

It was a wonderful end to the Eastside season with a lot of support for our boys.  Thank you so much to everyone who helped out to make the evening a success.

Many congratulations to the Year 8s who narrowly missed out on gaining the title, but have debated marvellously throughout the season.

Many congratulations to the Year 12s ( Wilber, Khushaal, Connor and Albert) who gained a well-deserved win and kept the Year 12 Eastside title for the fifth year running.

In FED the Year 9s were able to win the title. Very well done to Max, Arthur, Thomas S and Thomas N.

Unfortunately the Year 11s and Year 8s were unlucky this time. However, with teams that have rotated throughout the season we have done REALLY well. You should be very proud, boys. Any boy that debated in the FED competition in these Years has done well.

This week we can breathe a temporary sigh of relief as the after school competitions have stopped for a while.

Da Vinci Decathlon 2013

On Tuesday 28th May Year 7 students and Year 8 students represented High at the annual Da Vinci decathlon held at Knox Grammar. This event consists of tasks across a number of disciplines performed under pressure and completed to a time limit. Success requires a great deal of teamwork (something our lads have in bucket loads!) The results were received with great excitement as we heard that Year 7 had overcome lack of experience to achieve a 1st place in English, 2nd in General Knowledge and 2nd in Geography. Congratulations to Justin Lai, Tony Xu, Raymond Li, Arunan Srirengan, Telly Tselonis, Oliver Avdi-Ohlsson, Dev Lalwani and Alexander De Araujo. Special thanks must go to Ahad Zafar who mentored the boys during training sessions. His experience and advice greatly assisted their preparation.

The Year 8 team of Ahad Zafar, Lucas Wong, Corey Won, Kurt Wang, Wanyu Tang, Akeedh Razmi, Wesley Yu and Hugh Bartley showed how important team work is. They were really well organised and worked efficiently throughout the day. Their best result was a 1st in Mathematics. Outstanding! Although they were disappointed not to gain a medal, the boys should be pleased with their effort. I want to thank all of the students involved in da Vinci for being really impressive ambassadors for the school.

On Wednesday 29th, it was the turn of Years 9 and 10. Unfortunately, we have had to rebuild teams from last year due to a clash with Music camp and the Boggabilla visit. Subsequently, we suffered from lack of experience.  We were represented by an enthusiastic but disappointed Year 10 team consisting of Jun Park, Adilmorad Nadir, Leonard Mah, Kevin Liang, Luke Hoad, Nader Haider, Thomas George and William Chang. On the ‘plus-side’, it was nice to be able to give other students a chance to represent the school and the boys had an enjoyable day.

It was left to the Year 9 team to bring home the trophy and they didn’t disappoint. The announcement ‘1st place to Sydney Boys’ was music to our ears and the boys were rewarded for a sustained effort in every task throughout the day. Congratulations to Stratton Vakirtzis, Anthony Rusli, Fayad Morshedi, Vishal Karnamadala, Aiden Karahasan, Preetham Kadappu, Manning Blackall, and Taj Ali Khan. Fantastic result.

I want to thank all of the students involved in Da Vinci for being really impressive ambassadors for the school. It’s a privilege to be associated with them and I’m very grateful to their families for the fine job they’ve done raising their sons.

2013 National Chinese Eisteddfod

My Experience

Starting in Year 7, I began competing in the Chinese Eisteddfod which is an annual poetry competition. The National Chinese Eisteddfod is one of the largest Chinese poetry competitions outside of China and has been running for over twenty years. It is a competition that allows people of all ages to enjoy and learn about the Chinese culture and language. This competition not only teaches you the language but many other important virtues such as hard work, persistence and confidence.

Hard work is necessary and important for anything you do. There is a saying that says there are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure. Working hard is not easy and it doesn’t mean that if you work hard, you will succeed, but if you are not dedicated, the chance of your winning is even smaller.  This year, I tried my very hardest and as a result I obtained 3rd Prize for my individual performance. This has taught me a very important lesson that people who just sit making no effort achieve nothing.

Even though I do not speak Mandarin at home, this has not disadvantaged me. It really doesn’t matter what you start off with but what really matter is what you end up with. Through persistence and determination, anything is possible. By participating in this competition, I developed a certain degree of confidence. Confidence is very important as it can aid you in both schoolwork and in life. The National Chinese Eisteddfod is a great program for those students who want to develop their confidence.

The Chinese Eisteddfod also gives you a great amount of satisfaction and enjoyment. Ms Zhang, an extraordinary Chinese teacher, has helped me to enjoy and develop my Chinese skills. Her dedication to this program is invaluable and has helped me to get the most out of it.

Finally, even if you do not win, it really doesn’t matter. What really is important is to enjoy the whole process and learn from failure. In Year 7, I was unsuccessful and I told myself this year to take pleasure in this competition and try harder. Therefore, the results changed. I believe that the Chinese Eisteddfod Competition is an excellent program for anyone to take part in. It teaches you many important values and the enjoyment it provides is immeasurable. With the experience of Ms Zhang, you are bound to succeed!

NOVEL TO FILM FESTIVAL – BEGINS FRI LUNCH, CON’T TUES LUNCH.
The brand new film just out of the cinemas we have to show you is the film version of the Booker Prize winning novel The Life of Pi. The Andrews Library’s very big screen will show the first half this at lunchtime this Friday and will show the second half at lunch on Tuesday. (Our library will be taking advantage of the long before school periods on the 2 Fridays coming to create another 2 sessions)

Our Library bought 4 brand new book versions - they all went out immediately.  However the novels can be reserved.  The Senior Library also has 2 new copies of the novel.

THE GREAT GATSBY – There are 3 copies of this classic American novel between the 2 libraries. Baz Luhrmann did a fine job of the movie. It is the rich society that is over the top, not Luhrmann’s sets and costumes.

OTHER RECENT FILMS FROM NOVELS IN OUR LIBRARY ARE THESE: (DVD donations welcome though!)
Inkheart, The Kite Runner, The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Romulus, My Father, The Da Vinci Code, The Wind in the Willows, Snow Falling on Cedars and Australian Rules.

However after our Library’s decision to toss out of all Videos we are looking a little light on for DVDs.  If families are throwing out DVDs suitable for our students would they like to donate them? 

It is our library’s practice to annually purchase good quality films for the boys.  We do tend to support the novel to film philosophy and also try to purchase film classics.

TIGERS (AND OTHER PRIZE WINNERS) THE TIGER’S WIFE – Tea Obreht
I have just finished reading a recent purchase – The Tiger’s Wife, Winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction 2011, which is a debut novel by Tea Obreht.  This novel would be a great study for the faculty shared theme of “War” as it revolves around the intergenerational humanitarian response to war by two doctors in a mixed Muslim/Orthodox Yugoslav family.  Perhaps even because it explores such a horrific theme this novel harks back to folk tale and village superstition and the sacrifice of newcomers when the going gets too tough or inexplicable.  This turns a bloodthirsty topic into a lyrical tale and demonstrates for our generation how fairy tales evolved.

Our Library has made a point of purchasing prize winning books.  These can be found by those who like to read really worthwhile literature by putting in the search term, “prize winning books”.

Football: The World Game

Weekend Results

Week 3 of the trial season saw a full weekend of home fixtures against The Scots College. With midweek training hampered by wet conditions and the threat of more rain hanging over Saturday like a cloud, it was with great relief that we were able to get all matches played, with McKay 3 making its illustrious debut as a football pitch. The postage-stamp-sized field saw some cracking matches, with the 16s playing out some tight fixtures.

The match of the round came from the 15As, defeating Scots 2-0. However, with some slightly more composed finishing, it could have been a tennis score. The boys played some fantastic football against Scots with goalkeeper Kalem Best reduced to a spectator for the majority of the match. The defence of Christian Haddo, Nafis Rahman and James Pope was fantastic as a unit while Thomas Nimac was awesome controlling the midfield. Not only did they display their skills, but also their spirit, with spectators from both sides commenting on a fine example of the Sydney High spirit. It shows that a quality passing game and wing play produces results and this team is clicking so well that a lot of these boys will be knocking on the door of the Opens squads next season.

The 15s age group were the standouts, going the weekend undefeated and recording an aggregate 19-1 scoreline against teams from Scots, Shore and Barker – Kabir Agrawal the major contributor with 6 goals for the Cs. With more performances like this, we can expect him to be knocking on the door of the Bs and As soon.

Down at David Phillips, a man-of-the-match performance from debutant Jason Lim in goals kept Scots at bay and earned the 2nd XI a hard-fought 0-0 draw. What Jason lacks in height, he certainly makes up for in his technical ability and courage, time and again coming off his line to deny each forward thrust from the Scots strikers. The 1st XI were narrowly denied a result, going down by the barest of margins against a Scots team full of talent. Both teams will feel they should have scored more, with Agnish Nayak pulling off some fine saves in both halves. The best chance of the game for High fell to Jaan Pallandi, after some magnificent build up play from Daniel Arzani and Adilmorad Nadir, but unfortunately the ball fizzed just over the crossbar.

With the upcoming long weekend, there are no games this Saturday. The photos [available in the PDF version of this edition of High Notes] are a little fuzzy, but if you can name all 4 players, you’ll go into the major prize draw at the End Of Season Dinner.

A MESSAGE TO ALL PLAYERS AND PARENTS

All players must arrive and be ready at least half an hour before the match’s scheduled kick off time. A 9am kick off means you are at the ground and dressed no later than 8:30. Arriving 5 or 10 minutes prior to kick off is not fair to your teammates or your coach. Your coaches need to be able to prepare you physically and strategically for your game.

In the event of bad weather, please make sure you check the school’s website prior to leaving home.

High vs Grammar

The trial against Grammar was very competitive for most teams, with a win, a draw and many other close games. The highlight of the day was the 13As who left the Grammar team in their wake as they piled on four tries to one in a performance that displayed their excellent handling skills and great cover defence. The Opens teams performed well in some very tight encounters.

Press release from the GPS

For the upcoming 2013 GPS Rugby season, a pilot scheme in which players in the Under 14 age group who weigh 50kg or less, may be allowed to play down an age group.

Players will have to register and weigh in on (June 14) and again on (July 20).

This is an initiative to allow smaller boys to play and enjoy Rugby, an essential principle of GPS sport.

First Grade Report
In the final game for this half of the season against Riverview, we were looking forward to trying to maintain our winning streak. The Second grade game just before was an excellent display of skill and determination, with SBHS taking the first two sets before Riverview rallied to win the third. The fourth set was very tight, but seconds just managed to just edge it out.

As such, we felt a little nervous – we knew we would be in for a difficult game. Luckily for us, we overcame a shaky start in the first set to win the set with ease. Feeling good, we started the second set strongly and took a strong lead which we defended to win the second set convincingly. Coming into the third set, we knew that an early lead would be necessary so as to not turn the set into a competition as had happened in the second grade game. Unfortunately we weren’t able to do so early on, but through the middle we managed to create a small buffer. This allowed us to run some combination plays, giving useful experience for the upcoming CHS tournament. We managed to maintain the lead and then win the set. In all, it was a pleasing game, winning in straight sets.

Second Grade Report
On Saturday 2nd grade played Iggies, eager to continue our streak of winning in straight sets after the previous two matches. We started out incredibly strongly, getting to 10-0 in the first set with Niyaz’s accurate serves and George guarding the net and making sure nothing got past. While we were unable to keep up the trend, we did win the first set 25-13, a strong start against our toughest opponent yet. In the second set Iggies came back stronger and a few falters from us meant we dropped more points, but we were still able to snag a win for the 2nd set at 25-18. The 3rd set was where we fell apart, communication suddenly ceasing and making too many unforced errors. Iggies took full advantage of this temporary lapse in concentration and took and held the lead, until we had lost the set 18-25. It had been a steady trend downwards since the first 10 points of the match, and we were eager not to let it drift into 5 sets. We made sure to take our time in the 4th set and it paid off, finally winning 25-21. While we had won the match, it was disappointing to have lost our streak of straight set wins. For now however we remain undefeated, which is certainly something to be happy with. This match also marked the last GPS match for this term, and so for the few weeks remaining before holidays we will be training with the sole intent of beating Grammar when Saturday sport resumes in week 1 next term.

Junior Fencing

School Championships

On Saturday last week, the Under 15s Foil fencers went to compete in the School Championships at Marrickville for their individual competition. This event contained many of the finest fencers in Australia including students from strong fencing schools such as Sydney Grammar and St Aloysius and members from the National Squad. Despite this, High was able to do quite well in both the Poules and Direct Elimination.

The highlight fencers of the day were David Zhou (10R), Marshall Wang (10R), Julian Tu (9E) and Jonathan Tran (8M) who all ranked in the top 30 of the Poules. Specific credit should go to Jonathan who ranked highest in our school at 18th despite being younger than most competitors. All of these guys made it past their first round but lost in the second with the exception of Marshall who will now proceed to the finals this Saturday.

Overall, it was a pleasing performance despite the odds and an impressive start to the first School Championships of the year.

Regional Cross Country

Congratulations go to the following students have successfully competed in the Zone Cross Country carnival and are now selected to represent SHS at the Regional Cross Country Carnival on Friday 14th of June, 2013. A school bus will take competing students to the Cross Country venue, The Boulevard, Miranda.

Students are to collect a permission note and information sheet from Ms Dam or Mr Kesting in the Industrial Arts staffroom and return it by Tuesday 11th of June.

Year 7 Information Evening

Joint SGHS-SBHS P&C Meeting

A reminder also that the next P&C General meeting is the joint SGHS-SBHS P&C meeting which will be held Wednesday 19 June at 7:30pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall at Sydney Girls High School.  The guest speaker at this year’s joint meeting is Dr Ramesh Manocha.

Note that there will be no P&C general meeting on the Monday prior as a result.

Blood Donations

Save A Life – Donate Blood 14 June at SBHS Great Hall

The Red Cross mobile unit will be visiting us again on Friday 14 June (the same day as Y10 Science excursion).  This term they will be set up in the Great Hall.

Family members, staff and students over 16 are encouraged to donate by making an appointment on the bulletin board outside Room 506.

• Appointment times are at 10 minute intervals from 8.30am-4.20pm.
• Students should attempt to make appointments for themselves during lunch, recess and free periods.
• SGHS staff/students will be invited to book any remaining available timeslots from Friday 7 June.
• Walk-ins will be accepted if time permits.

The duration of your pre-donation screening process will be drastically reduced if you include your previous donor number when reserving your appointment time.  All donors must complete a comprehensive questionnaire before eligibility to donate is determined.  Red Cross medical staff will follow stringent screening procedures used in medical facilities.  Permission notes are not required.

The most common factors that will determine if you can or cannot give blood follow.*

Before giving blood:

1. DRINK UP - In the 24 hours before donation, especially in warm weather.  Also, drink at least four good-sized glasses of water/juice in the 3 hours prior to your visit
2. EAT UP - Make sure you eat something in the 3 hours before donating
3. BRING ID – Please bring at least one form of photo identification

Most people are able to give blood if they:

• bring photo ID
• feel fit and healthy
• are aged between 16 and 70
• weigh over 45kg (over 50kg if under 18)

You may be temporarily unable to give blood if you:

• are on certain medications or antibiotics
• have a cold or feeling unwell in any way
• have certain medical conditions
• have recently had surgery

You will not be able to give blood if you have:

• visited or lived in the UK for a cumulative total of 6 months or more between 1980 and 1996
• engaged in male to male or other specified at risk sexual activity in the past 12 months
• recently been pregnant or given birth
• had a tattoo in the past 6 months
• ever had a serious heart condition
• ever had a serious blood disorder or disease
• ever “used drugs” by injection or been injected with drugs not prescribed by a doctor or dentist
