High Talent
Darren Chien (Year 12) and Kevin Guo (Year 8) placed second in the 200m breaststroke at the All Schools carnival and were invited to represent NSW at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide. Both boys are congratulated for their wonderful achievements in swimming this year. Geoff Gerlach was named in the starting 5 for the CIS basketball team. Well done, Geoff! The High Sailing team finished 6th in the NSW teams sailing championships, completed last weekend. Well done to Marcus James, Connor Robinson, David Evans, Kai Matsumoto, Tiger Zhang, Thomas Shortridge and Bec Loder (SGHS). In the National Latin Examination, High students earned 15 gold medals, 15 silver and 6 Magna Cum Laude awards. James Chen and Dominic Mah qualified for scholarships to study Latin in the USA. In the Australian National Geographic Geography Competition High came 4th in Australia, based on the best 5 Intermediate and the best 5 Senior students’ performances. Good job, boys! Long serving P&C member from the past, Simon Chan, Director of Art Atrium, was the recipient of the inaugural NSW Premier’s Multicultural Award for Arts and Culture. A deserving recognition of his work for the arts!

BYOD Planning
David Isaacs (SHS 2003) delivered a comprehensive outline to parents at the P & C meeting of the school’s post Digital Education Revolution plans. For his presentation, go to the Parent Portal, click ‘School Reference Documents’ and then the ‘BYOD Information Folder’. We will have to support existing DER devices issued to students in Years 9-12 until those students leave the school. At the local level, we have to make policy about how students support and extend their learning by bringing approved devices to school. David explained that the school had assessed the equity implications of a policy involving student (really parent) supplied approved devices and had a concept plan about how to deal with the issue.

For 2014, the school decided against a requirement to bring your own device for all the Junior School 7-9, instead focussing on getting the transition right for Year 9 students. Year 9 teachers have already modified the curriculum for the DER policy implementation. Students in Years 7 and 9 will be learning under the syllabuses and programs developed for the National Curriculum, containing ICT goals and activities. All students will be encouraged to bring their own devices but it will only be mandatory of Year 9 in 2014. The key issue is what will be needed on the devices to be used at school? David explained that we have a process in place to determine what uses teachers require of the devices. At present internet capability for research and file storage and word processing for file creation are all that are obviously needed. By July we should be in a position to give more details to parents. While at school student usage will be controlled by DEC internet access protocols but at home the BYODs will be free to access any sites. The future of the DEC wireless network supplied to schools has not yet been determined. We will keep you informed as we firm up the policy details. Rest assured that our ICT Department will deliver the most workable solution for our boys and their teachers.

Class by Local Selection
Over the last few weeks I have received 13 emails of support for the proposal from staff, with no negative assessments. There was a concern about how this action would affect local comprehensive school enrolments. My argument is that The P & C discussed and ratified the ‘Class by Local Selection’ proposal with 15 votes for and 4 abstentions. By email I had 5 messages of support. I received one letter from a student, Nelson Tang, opposing the proposal on the grounds of equity. He represented the views of around fifty Facebook friends. His main argument was that everyone, wherever they are in Sydney, should have an opportunity to access one of our 180 places in Year 7 by means of an open and fair competition in the SSET test. The counter argument is that politicians have opened up a large number of extra places in NSW schools over the last 5 or 6 years that were not there before. The availability of selective school places has become a political rather than an equity issue. He was also opposed to positive discrimination on the basis of where you reside, meaning people with the means to live near High were advantaged over those who could not afford to live in the area. This view is opposed by the notion that local communities need access to local schools. The population around High is growing rapidly but public education opportunities are static. Given that 30 possible places for local area students won’t do much to fix the problem, at least it is a first step. Another high school in the area is the long term solution for a growing population of inner city dwellers.

These issues were canvassed at the School Council Meeting, also held this week. The School Council unanimously supported the Proposal. The main benefits to High of having greater than the existing c10% of its students living ‘locally’ are that more students (and their parents)  may have more time to engage in the activities of the school. High has now developed an impressive infrastructure of facilities, resources, personnel and programs to accommodate 1,000 boys doing many activities. We produce all-rounders and we want to attract more all-rounders, or those who want to develop as all-rounders, to the school. As a consequence of this level of support I have written to the Director of Business Services requesting implementation of the proposal for the Year 7 intake of 2015.

SHS Debating

GPS trials continue this week for Years 9 and 10 and start for Year 8. Next week Year 7 trials will start. Years 11 and 12 will begin a little bit later this term.

Years 7, 8, 9 and 11 are through to FED Semi Finals.  These take place over the next two weeks. It is important to know when and where you have to be if you are in a team for this.  This week Year 9 are debating in the FED Semis at St Joseph’s and next week the Year 7,

8 and 11 are debating at Newington.

It is round 7 in Eastside this week. We will be at SCEGGS. I will be accompanying the boys and am looking forward to seeing our Year 12 team debate.

Communication when exams are on is difficult so you must sign up for the teams email. It is disappointing how many families do not receive emails and how many emails get sent back to me because the addresses are incorrect. In addition check the notice board and daily notices.

I would like to thank Eden Freiburg for her generous gift of table cloths and tea towels. We will be using these to make our sumptuous debating supper even more splendid. Thank you.

Next week I am off to Armidale and Boggabilla and I have been very impressed with the number of boys who have been keen to get involved in debating whilst we are up there. I have even had boys coming to ask if they can come along just to debate. It’s a long trip for a debate, boys! Unfortunately TAS do not have a very big debating program so it looks like there may only be one or two debates.  This enthusiasm for debating is wonderful to see.

Football: The World Game

Welcome to the 2013 football season and what a season it is shaping up to be.

Firstly, I would like to welcome the Year 7 boys and their families to football at High and hope that it will be an enjoyable six years of football aimed at skill development and fun.

With the introduction of the new School Sports Policy, we have taken a giant leap forward to ensure that every boy at every level is given the best possible coaching by employing the services of Mr Soccer, the premier football coaching company in Sydney. Led by former Socceroo Mark Robertson and in conjunction with ambassadors Lucas Neill (Sydney FC and Australia) and Kyah Simon (Sydney FC and Australia), their professional and highly qualified football coaches, in conjunction with staff and Old Boys, will design and implement a program specifically catering for your son’s skill level.

Senior Fencing

AJ Rae National Qualifier - Sabre and Epee

Sabre
High came into our first competition without touching a sabre for 6 months and one footwork session up our sleeves. With two national sabre fencers in the other two teams, High's focus was to treat this as a warm-up competition for our upcoming season of fencing. Our first match was against Newington and after a slow start, YiuTao and Ian were able to capitalize on their weakest fencer to level the scores. Although High lost 45-32, there were many positives throughout the whole match. In our second match of the day, we were up against a stronger team. After a fine effort from the whole team, we lost 45-22 with our heads held high and looking forward to the upcoming season.

On the 4th of May, the SBHS epee team went to the AJ RAE National Qualifier in Marrickville. We were looking forward to the opportunity to qualify for nationals.  We managed to qualify beating the SBHS B team 45-24. The A team comprised of Andrew Cha, Ashley Chan, Kritman Dhamoon and Hayden Rabone. We all performed well, considering the fact that it was our first week back and that we had not had any training. We have been invited to compete at a national level in Brisbane in August and look forward to opportunity to compete.

May P&C General Meeting

Thank you to those parents who attended the P&C General Meeting on Monday of last week at which two presentations and discussions were held.  David Isaacs from the school’s IT department advised the meeting on the school’s plan to institute a “bring your own device” policy for next year’s Year 9 boys, replacing the now defunct Digital Education Revolution laptops.  We thank David for giving up his evening to give this informative presentation.   For those who weren’t able to attend, David’s presentation is available on the Parent Portal at Reference Documents>P&C Presentation-Proposed BYOD Presentation.  As well, Dr Jaggar presented on the school’s plans to introduce a Year 7 “Locally Selected Class”.  The drivers and detail of the proposal were discussed at length, with the meeting ultimately supporting the plan. The proposal is available on the Parent Portal at Reference Documents>Locally Selected Class Proposal.

We encourage all parents to attend at least one of these meetings per year to ensure that the decisions of the meeting are representative of the views of the parents, on whose behalf they are being made.

Meeting dates are generally the second Monday of each month in term at 7:30pm.  Confirmation of the dates, time and location of the meetings is available on the school calendar at

Joint SGHS-SBHS P&C Meeting

Please note in your diaries the date of the next P&C meeting.  This is the joint SGHS-SBHS P&C meeting and will be held Wednesday 19 June at 7:30pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall at Sydney Girls High School.  The guest speaker at this year’s joint meeting is Dr Ramesh Manocha who is a practising medico and researcher at the University of New South Wales. Dr Manocha’s main area of research is meditation and its potential application for mental health and wellbeing in schools. Dr Manocha will be speaking on the topic Dealing with Teenage Stress and Enhancing Academic Performance which will deal with the rising tide of mental, social and emotional challenges affecting young people in our increasingly complex world. It will provide accurate information and reliable advice on how to deal with these unprecedented challenges.   We look forward to seeing you there.

ANNUAL MUSIC CAMP 2013

Music camp will be held at Collaroy Centre (Homestead Avenue Collaroy Beach) from Monday-Wednesday (27th - 29th May 2012). All students in the Music Performance Program attend the 3-day camp with Music Staff and instrumental tutors rehearsing new repertoire that will be performed at the Camp Concert at 6pm upon return to school Wednesday afternoon. Buses will depart from Drivers Ave at 8am on Monday 27thth May, please ensure you are there with your instrument and luggage by 7:45am.

SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD

The Senior String Ensemble will be performing at the Sydney Eisteddfod (“The Concourse”, Chatswood) on Monday, the 20th of May 2013. Good Luck!

ENSEMBLES TERM 2

There are NO EXCUSES for not attending or arriving late to ensemble rehearsals. ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM (unless stated otherwise). Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% ATTENDANCE is required. PLEASE REMEMBER to pack up after rehearsals (tidy up the room/and stands back on rack). EVERYONE needs to help – it shouldnot be left to one or two boys. THANK YOU boys for your co-operation

Remember that ensemble attendance go towards your AWARDS SYSTEM. Rolls are taken and you are only allowed to miss on 2 rehearsals per term!!!
