School Attendance Policy (2005) – Leave of Absence In the case of students of compulsory age, applications for student leave in excess of 15 days I a 12 month period may be granted by the Minister for Education (S25, 1990). This power has been delegated to Regional Directors. A special form must be completed and forwarded through the Principal to the Regional Director for approval.

Chartered Accountants Cadetship EveningParents and Students are invited to The Institute of Chartered Accountants – Cadetship Evening on 15 May, 2013 at the Sydney Convention Centre. A cadetship offers students the chance to work while they study a business or commerce degree at university. The Cadetship Evening offers Year 12 students the chance to meet and network with a wide range of employers. There will be information sessions where students will hear what to expect as a cadet from currents cadets. The diverse opportunities available as a Chartered Accountant; presentations from Coca Cola Amatil and Vodafone and how to be successful in the recruitment process by two leading HR Managers. Football CommitteeMeeting 13th May 2013The Football Committee would like to invite all parents and supporters involved in football at High to share their views and ideas for SBHS football. Committee meetings are conducted by the parents for the sole purpose of increasing your son’s enjoyment of football at High. A number of new initiatives have been put in places this season, with the introduction of Mr. Soccer coaching and the increase in training sessions in line with the new Sports Policy. Meetings are held upstairs in the Gymnasium and begins at 5:30pm. All are welcome.
Gifted and talented philosophy excursionOn Monday 6th May year 9 students Mohammad Tajwar ALI KHAN, Manning BLACKALL, Arthur CHAO, Preetham KADAPPU, Aidin KARAHASAN, Visha KARNAMADAKALA, Andrew McNAUGHTON, Ethan MERRICK, Fayed MORSHEDI, Thomas SHORTRIDGE, joined year 12 students Nelson TANG and Khushaal VYAS at Cranbrook for a day of BIG IDEAS presented by Julie Arliss and Jeffrey Hodges of Academy Conferences. The lectures covered topics such as Cogito ergo sum, Future Science (specifically Nanotechnology-its potential and its ethical concerns), self- image and a lateral thinking exercise ‘How many animals did Noah take onto the ark?” Julie’s approach is very ‘user friendly’. She insists on no note-taking, encouraging her audience to think creatively and to be playful with the ideas that she is exploring. This makes for a really exciting and at times exhausting experience as you try to keep up with the pace and depth of her presentations. The enthusiastic participation in the final discussion regarding the outcome of a debate on free will confirmed that, even though it was at the end of the day, the students could not get enough of what was on offer: IDEAS, Big IDEAS.
Vishal Karnamadala is to be congratulated for his outstanding contribution to the discussion on
our behalf. He showed intelligence and composure in articulating his ‘take’ on the
complexities of free will. (It is amazing that Vishal is a year 9 student engaging in thinking at
the level of year 10, 11 and 12 students) All of the students involved in this event carried
themselves magnificently as representatives of High. Well done boys and thank you to Dr Jaggar
for his support and encouragement of philosophy at Sydney Boys.
Intermediate Theatresports ReportIt was a cold night on the 6th of May, and the Sydney Boys High School Intermediate Theatresports Team (yes that deserves a capital) were warming up before the big event. In alphabetical order by their first names, Jun Park, Noah Fowler, Peter Ryan and Tom Nassif were about to step up to the theoretical plate and literal stage in order to compete in the first round of this year’s annual Impro Australia Theatresports competition. Competing against Sydney Girls High, International Grammar School, Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus and Macquarie Grammar School, they were ready. They were cool, calm and collected, which meant that they either were totally prepared and confident of their skills (thanks to their intense dedication and awesome coach Bridie) or they were clueless of the danger zone they were about to enter into. It was obviously the former, and the four men, as they were now men, stomped onto the stage, showing this newfound manliness in preparation for the first round. “I love you,” they all shouted to Bridie (who was now the host) but referring actually to the game they wanted to play and not their feelings for the Wonder Woman herself. They weren’t ready for that just yet, but they were ready for the title of their chosen game, Escaping from Prison. What resulted was an incredibly moving and heartfelt performance from the team, scoring a whopping 9 in the first round and blasting them into second place, behind IGS by a tiny 1 point. By the end of the second round and after a hilarious Genre Replay scene, the boys had maintained their second place, again by 1 point. The top two teams of the night would go through; the rest would have a second chance in the Wild Card round still to come.
Before that though they faced the Open Round, and while by the end of Round Three the team
managed to pull off a realistic rendition of being On School Camp, scoring ten and equalising
with IGS, Sydney Girls had used this round to recover their losses with an incredible 14 points.
Sydney Girls, our allies and also arch-nemeses were now in the lead by and ahead of both IGS and
us in equal second by one point, seemingly a recurring theme throughout the night. This led to
the fourth round, the clincher. The boys improvised their hearts out in an Emotional
Rollercoaster of a Chess Competition, and while they achieved a personal best for the night with
12 points, it wasn’t enough to put them in the top two. After the dust settled, what
remained were IGS and SGHS both on 43 points, with Sydney Boys behind, once more, by 1 point.
While we may have come third, we gained the meaning of life, the universe and everything tonight,
and with it a chance to compete again in the Wild Card round where we undoubtedly will fight our
way to the next round. Well done boys, you did a fantastic job improvising out there.
Music NotesANNUAL MUSIC CAMP 2013 The Annual music camp will be held at Collaroy Centre (Homestead Avenue Collaroy Beach) from Monday-Wednesday (27th - 29th May 2013). All students in the Music Performance Program attend the 3-day camp with Music Staff and instrumental tutors rehearsing new repertoire that will be performed at the Camp Concert at 6pm upon return to school Wednesday afternoon. Buses will depart from Drivers Ave at 8am on Monday 27th May, please ensure you are there with your instrument and luggage by 7:45am. ENSEMBLES TERM 1 All music ensembles have resumed as of Week 1 this term. Please check the timetable and arrive ON TIME! There are NO EXCUSES for not attending or arriving late to ensemble rehearsals. ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM. (unless stated otherwise). Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% of ATTENDANCE is required. PLEASE REMEMBER to pack up after rehearsals (tidy up the room/and stands back on rack). EVERYONE needs to help and not left to one or two boys. THANKYOU boys for your co-operation! Please remember to PRACTICE DAILY, if only for 20 minutes is required for you to develop your awesome musical skills and make your music tutor happy. Practice makes PERFECT!!!!! Remember that ensemble attendance go towards your AWARDS SYSTEM. Rolls are taken and you are only allowed to miss on 2 rehearsals per term!!! The 2013 ensemble rehearsal timetable is provided below:

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CURRICULUM – Both Librarians are attending Library professional development courses this term which are examining how librarians can assist their schools to cope with new syllabuses. Both librarians will be reporting to Term Staff Meetings and to the P drive on any course they attend. Some mention will also be made in High Notes of these courses. New resources which relate to the National Curriculum will be found by entering the search term - Australian Curriculum – Science (English, History etc) into Library Enquiry. CURRENT LIBRARY PROJECTS
