High Notes, Vol 14 No 12, May 03 2013

From the Principal
Welcome back
After great weather during the break we welcome back staff and
students to term 2. This is the examination and reporting term and gets busy very quickly. Year
12 exams are followed by assessment weeks for all other years. We celebrate athletics at the GPS
carnival on May 11. After that, winter season sports are in full swing. I hope everyone has a
very busy, productive and enjoyable term.
High Talent
Congratulations to Connor Robinson who won best speaker at the
Commonwealth Day Debate. Well done to our CIS swimming representatives: Darren Chien (12),
Leonard Mah & Kazuo Nakamura (10), Christian Haddo (9), Kevin Guo (8) and Allen Guo &
Brandon Yoon (7). Congratulations to Thomas Hughes (12) who was selected in the CIS rugby league
team. Ivor Metcalf was successful in winning a bronze medal in the 110m hurdles at the
Australian Junior Championships held in Perth. Well done Ivor.
Staff Changes
Owen The (SBHS 2001) has been appointed as Science Teacher,
replacing Brian Webb. We welcome Owen back to High. Mr Crouch’s position in Music was
abolished. Ms Lim, Ms Miller and Ms Kim are our music teachers for the remainder of 2013. Ms
Jacqui Chen has been appointed as a Mathematics Teacher, replacing Chris Kourtesis. She will take
up the position full time in January, 2014. Ms Jessica Millar is replacing John Dunne in
mathematics.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN 2013 Information for Parents brochure is now available
().
"The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment
for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. On
Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students will take the 2013 NAPLAN tests.
"NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school
curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing
in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children.
"NAPLAN tests fundamental skills rather than specific content, and as such is not a test for
which students can study or drill. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to
let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do
the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended.
"An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can
use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of
concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with
teachers. More information is available at ."
Staff Development Days
The first two days of term were dedicated to staff
development. Douglas Barton, founder of Elevate Education ran through the programs that
his staff deliver to our students in Year 11 and to nominated academic support students in other
years. There were sessions on ; underachievement, Bring Your Own Device planning; MySchool and
NAPLAN comparisons; the Emergency Management Plan; asthma Awareness / Epipens; and a report from
our ADCO - the antidiscrimination staff representative. Day two was devoted to preparing for the
implementation of the National Curriculum.
Light Rail Proposal Forum
There was a very well attended public meeting in
the Great Hall during the holidays on the NSW Government’s Light Rail proposal. For SBHS
and SGHS, there will be a stop on Anzac Parade, with a ten minute trip to Central. The capacity
of the network is estimated at 9,000 passengers per hour. The route was the most controversial
component of what would obviously be a great boost for public transport. For us, it appears to
cut Moore Park West in half, turning sharply to the left just past gate 10, continuing across the
park and joining with Devonshire Street. Community input will be sought during the planning
phase. Completion estimates are 5-6 years commencing in 2014. If you have opinions on the project
that you would like to express, call 1800684490 or email

Locally Selected Class Proposal
High relies heavily on the participation
of students and parents. Most active parents at our school live locally. Many suitable students
for High live locally but for various reasons are not selected or choose not to accept offers.
The proposal to select one Year 7 class using our established local selection process (used to
fill vacancies in Years 8-12) was sent to the School Education Director, the Director of Business
Services and the Minister of Education. Essentially, the idea is that 150 year 7 students would
be selected and enrol in High in the usual way and 30 additional students would be chosen by our
Selection Committee. Preference would be given to students residing within a 5 kilometre radius
of the school. For comparison purposes applicants would be required to produce a standardised
test result – SSET or ACER scholarship test – before final offers were made.
Alternatively, an entrance test for applicants could be administered at High after the SSET for
applicants who had not sat for the test. The Selection Committee would be guided by a comparative
cut-off score for standardised tests to preserve the ethos of the school as a provider of cutting
edge gifted education. The proposal can be read on the School Administrative Documents section of
the Parent Portal. I welcome your feedback.

Debating
Welcome back to the busiest term on the debating calendar. This is the term where we reach the
finals in Eastside and FED, but more importantly it is team selection for GPS squads and (in
Years 7-10) Premier’s Debating Challenge teams. Unlike in the other competitions where we
have no set teams and there are opportunities for everyone to debate, in GPS and PDC the teams
are set.
In order to choose our teams we suspend coaching for a number of weeks ( time and length
will vary depending on the year group) and students will be given a time to come and prepare for
a debate which they will then take part in in front of a panel of coaches who will be ranking
students on debating abilities.
You may be a student who enjoys coming to the coaching sessions in order to develop your
debating skills because you understand how that helps you achieve better results in all areas of
school and life in the future. You may not want to try out for GPS and that is perfectly ok. You
will not attend coaching whilst the trials are on.
It is very important that students read the Daily Notices, the debating board, the debating email
and listen carefully to their coach over the next few weeks so that they know when try outs are
and to ensure they have a spot – if they want one.
Once try outs are finished and teams are selected there will be changes in coaching groups as GPS
and PDC debaters will be with: Dom, Nina, Anthony, Nakul, Angud, Justin.
This week we have two debates at Home: Eastside is against SGHS (who are having a very successful
run in the competition). These would be great debates to watch and I encourage students to be
part of the audiences. FED is against Barker. Please can I remind debaters and chair people to
bring food for supper and for parents to help out with supper preparation, and even more
importantly, the clean up afterwards.
Finally can I remind students that award scheme points for debating are awarded AT THE END OF
TERM 3 and are only given to students who attended coaching on a regular basis and have exhibited
good behaviour throughout the three terms. If I have to talk to boys about poor behaviour
on more than one occasion they will be asked to leave the debating program and there will be NO
REFUND of co-payments.
Each week I send out an email to debating families. In order to receive this email please
send me an email to

Expectations of all Rugby players:
- Attend a minimum of 3 Rugby training sessions a week as per the age group training
schedule. An additional Strength and Conditioning training is also recommended. Strength and
Conditioning training occurs Monday - Thursday morning 7.00 – 8.45am or Tuesday afternoon
3.30 – 5.00pm.
- Rugby players come to training prepared to train (i.e. have correct gear - Mouthguards,
boots, socks, shorts, jumpers).
- Represent the school displaying a willingness to perform well and with sportsmanship.
- As per the ‘Sports Policy’, students who enrol in Rugby are expected to
attend all training sessions and Saturday games. Students are to report their Saturday absence
through ‘Student Portal’ and follow this up with a signed parental note explaining
the absence by 9am sharp on Monday morning. If students miss a training session they must bring a
note to the box outside Mr Pavone’s office. Failure to do so will incur detention
consequences.
I hope to see you all at training
