High Notes, Vol 14 No 10, April 05 2013

From the Principal
High Talent
Well done to our WotOpera boys for the reception they received
by the audience at the Seymour Centre last week. Their rollicking tale of two Russian
Hairdressers who, after being falsely accused of smuggling animal parts and spending time in
prison, are exonerated and decide to relocate to Mexico, was well received. The music, libretto,
sets and choreography were all conceived from scratch in 22 hours and the piece performed in
public. It was a fine display of collective creativity constrained sharply by time. More
importantly, the boys seemed to have a huge amount of fun while performing. Thank you too, to
their mentors Sarah Kim, Suzanna Lim and Jennie Rohr.
Shobhan and Shaleen Baranwal competed successfully at the National Band Championships in Perth.
They performed with the New South Wales Public Schools Symphonic Wind Orchestra in the Junior B
grade section, achieving first place and with the New South Wales Public Schools Symphonic Wind
Ensemble in the Open A grade section achieving 2nd place. Congratulations, boys!
Recent capital expenditures from school funds
During the early part of this
year, several important expenditures were made to improve facilities at High. The much-used Great
Hall Kitchen needed to have a grease trap installed to comply with health and safety regulations.
This was completed in January at a cost of $11,918. In the School Canteen, cupboards were
modified, the hot water system relocated and a new dishwasher supplied and fitted ($3,611).
Security concerns at the COLA led to the installation of a double wire front gate with barbed
wire added on top. The holes in the fence were re-wired and the light switch relocated inside
($3,269). Some long-delayed air conditioning work was done: Room 204, the Board Room, SAM’s
Office, SAO Office, Executive Assistant Office and the Principal’s Office ($15,380).
The Record
Captains of summer sports teams have a responsibility to prepare
a short report about the season their team had. A focus on the positives is appreciated and
highlighting any good individual performances. Reports should be submitted electronically to Ms
May. One enduring feature about The Record is the pleasure gained by Old Boys returning after 30
or 50 years who relive moments of their teenage years through the photographs, names and
summaries preserved in The Record. Co-curricular activities need to submit reports also.
Supporters with good action photographs are asked to email them as attachments to Ms May who
might be able to use any interesting ones in The Record or High Flyer.
The Annual School Report
A PDF version of the Annual School Report 2012 can
be downloaded at .
The report showcases the achievements of our boys in 2012. It contains a great deal of
information about what was learned, what our plans and performance targets are and how our school
operates. I commend it to you.
Values Education
Motivational Media performed their latest production Mad For Life last week to the whole
school in three sessions. Such performances are integral to our policy of developing student
awareness of life’s complexity and of preparing boys with strategies to deal with life in a
world of challenges and temptations.
Invoices for Summer Activities Co-payments
Families have had invoices
posted for term 1 activities. Despite these charges, most activities are heavily subsidised from
school funds, particularly in direct grants from school funds, provision of MICs, teacher
supervision, WHS compliance costs and parking allocation support. Co-payments are used primarily
for the provision of coaching. In basketball alone, a team of 58 people delivers the program! We
have staff, students, Old Boys, parents and volunteers working to make your sons' school
experiences more enjoyable. It would be appreciated if you could make your co-payments before the
end of term. Thank you.

SBHS Debating
Just a reminder that this week coaching is just for the Eastside teams, but for next week
everyone will be expected to attend debating. In order to qualify for Award Points at the end of
the year you need to show that you have attended coaching regularly (which is why the coaches
take a roll each week) and that you have shown high standards of behaviour throughout the
coaching sessions. I have been asked to speak to four students about their behaviour this year so
far which is not too bad considering we have 250 students stay behind until 5pm every Friday.
However, it means that each of those students has used up their one chance and any more poor
behaviour from them would result in them being asked to leave debating (whether they have made
their co-payments or not).
Everyone doing debating has now received their co-payments so please can you arrange for these to
be paid. Last year we had 100% payment and I will be looking for that again. We need these
finances to continue to provide the fantastic service that we provide.
I am looking for some students to take over the running of the school debating website. There has
been a lot of work completed on this during last year and I thank Christopher Chen for organising
all of that. This is our website: . Please have a look and if you are interested
in being part of a team which updates the information (Award points will be available). Please
come and see me if you are.
Each week I send out an email to debating families. In order to receive these emails please
send me an email to

tell me your name and year group or your son’s name and year group and I will add you to
the contact list.
