High Talent Thank you to Mr Hannon (organiser), the history staff (Ms Powell, Davis, Genias and Berger and Mr Devlin) and Ms May and Ms Grace from visual arts, for their running of the history excursion to Canberra. The event ran smoothly and the boys were excellently behaved.
Safety At School The group agreed that three first steps might be effective. First, the School Prefects have agreed to be proactive in speaking to boys in the playground if they hear inappropriate language. They will tell them how their utterances may offend others and that they are unacceptable. Second, the school will conduct an audit of its PDHPE programs to ascertain whether they are meeting the needs of same sex attracted, questioning or transgendered students. Third, training for teachers was seen to be a vital first step in culture change at the school. In Term 3 on a School Staff Development day a session for staff to raise awareness would be programmed.

From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.
‘English In Year 11’ – Information Evening
The English staff at Sydney High would like to invite parents of Year 11 students to an English
information evening on Tuesday 27th March at 6.30 pm in the Drama Studio (Rm 204). The focus for
the evening will be on providing an overview of Preliminary English Courses and assessment to
assist students in making a successful transition into Year 12.

Free 'Research Skills for HSC students' Programat the State Library of NSWThe State Library of NSW is offering free "Research Skills for HSC Students" programs. This free program, which includes an orientation tour, is designed to give students strategies for making the most of our collections. It covers searching the Catalogue for books and other material as well as finding articles in journals and newspapers through electronic resources. SBHS DebatingDear High Debating Parent, Recently you would have received an invoice for the co-payment for your son to participate in the School’s Debating program this season. Please make this payment to the School office as soon as possible. The debating co-payments are scaled to represent the coach to student ratio which intensifies as the students get older. SBHS provides an outstanding program of sport and other co-curricular activities such as music and debating. As a GPS School, High offers our boys opportunities to participate in programs that are unmatched in any other public school in Australia and even in most private schools, where the fees are many times those at SBHS. Moreover, our programs are structured to fit with the academic focus of our students. As a result, High produces outstanding scholar-sportsmen equipped not only for academic success but with the broader skills and attributes to succeed in their careers and their lives. Debating, for example, is an activity which develops the skills of speaking publically, critical thinking and logical argument. These skills are essential for success in most (if not all) future careers your son may aspire to. We have an extremely successful record in debating at High, but in recent years we have noticed a range of our competitor schools have been able to pour resources into their programs, resources that, as a Public School, we simply do not have. If we are to remain one of the best debating schools in NSW it is essential that we get financial support from parents. The School makes a substantial contribution to the cost of providing its fifteen co-curricular programs but is unable to cover the full cost from the relatively low annual contributions it invoices to parents at the beginning of each year. To help provide adequate coaching and facilities, the School Council, supported by the P&C Association, has requested that the School also charge a co-payment per boy for each co-curricular activity. For Debating, the School pays for 18 high quality coaches who have or are currently debating at Inter-University Level and the cost of the MIC – so that she can be released from timetable commitments to organise the program and for limited release time for other members of staff to escort students to debates. Other costs are membership fees for three private and one public competition, regular opportunities for boys to attend additional coaching or debating tournaments at University, social debates with other schools and additional competitions such as UNYA Unlike most other co-curricular activities at High debating runs for three terms. In addition, unlike many competitor schools, we have a very inclusive program which means we endeavour to give as many students the opportunity to debate in competitions as we can. Even after GPS selections have been made we continue to provide high quality coaching and debating opportunities for those boys who have been unsuccessful in this selection process or didn’t want to try out for this competition.

Music NotesEncore ConcertCongratulations to Ennes Mehmedbasic for his outstanding performance at Encore Concert last Monday evening held at the Sydney Opera House. Twenty students were selected across NSW from over 6000 music candidates to perform at this prestigious event. It was wonderful to have 50 of our elective music students come to support Ennes; well done on this excellent achievement; wow!!! Music Performance ProgramStudents in the Music Performance Program, ALL Music Ensembles are now up and running, please ensure that you are attending the appropriate Ensembles as 80% attendance to rehearsals is required for Award Scheme points. The 2012 ensemble rehearsal timetable is provided below:
The Marching Band will be playing in the Sydney City March on ANZAC Day in 2012. Anzac Day Marching Band Holiday RehearsalsMarching Band holiday rehearsal will held in the 2nd week of the holidays on Thursday 19th April 2012 from 10am-1pm with a break in between. ALL students in the Intermediate and Senior Concert Band are required to attend. Please let the Music Staff know if there are any concerns. Annual Music CampThe Annual Music Camp will be held at The Tops Conference Centre, Stanwell Tops this year from Monday-Wednesday (28th - 30th May 2012). We invite ALL students in the Music Performance Program to attend the 3-day camp. Music Staff and instrumental tutors will rehearse new repertoire that will be performed at the Camp Concert upon return to school Wednesday afternoon. Please collect a note from the Music Staff if you have not yet received one and make payments to the Main Office.
探花视频 Cadet UnitLive Fire ShootA detachment of senior cadets with Second Lieutenant Anthony Ho in charge, are off to Holsworthy this weekend to participate in a live fire shoot with the Army’s current service rifle , the Austeyr F88. Other school and community based cadets from the Sydney and South area will shooting alongside In addition to shooting our cadets will join members of Hurlstone Agricultural High School Cadet Unit in several short field exercises. The Austeyr F88 rifle is the standard rifle carried by soldiers on the Australian Army and also used by the Royal Australian Navy, ground elements of the Royal Australian Air Force as well as New Zealand forces. Firing the 5.56mm NATO cartridge, the F88 is equipped with optical sights and a 30 round magazine. F88 shoots are always popular with cadets; before shooting the F88, cadets are required to undergo safety and handling training with the rifle. New UniformsFifteen Phase One recruits have been issued with their cadet uniforms this week. Over the next 2 weeks the balance of our new recruits will receive their uniforms. You will notice our new uniformed members moving about the School on Tuesdays. Cadet VacanciesSome further vacancies are available in the cadet unit for boys aged at least 12 years and six months. This minimum age is set by the Cadet Force Regulations of the Defence Act and not something the Unit or School can change. Currently, we have seven boys under age in “holding pattern” awaiting cadet enrolment. Applicants will find the new enrolment programme has been streamlined and most will not require an outside medical examination. Extracurricular Activities ClashMICs, convenors and organisers are reminded that Tuesday afternoons in term are home training parades for cadets at High. In organising the cadet unit training programme unit staff go to great lengths to avoid clashes with sporting and other extra-curricular activities for our boys. We ask others to remember that Tuesday afternoons are cadet afternoons and to refrain from scheduling competing activities for our cadets. We are told that Tuesday afternoons have been cadet afternoons since 1883 - seems like plenty of notice. Students at High are under enough pressure; we ask that our volunteer cadets be allowed to participate in the leadership programme of their choice without being threatened by passionate promoters of pet programmes
Sydney Boys High School TennisHigh vs St Joesph’s
1st Grade
After a week off due to the Head of the River, High headed out to Joeys in the final rubber of
the season. A lot was at stake on the weekend, with Shore, Grammar and Scots closely on our
tails, with all three schools within 3.5 matches behind us. There was also the opportunity for us
to make sure Joeys got the wooden spoon. The rubber was once again under threat with storm clouds
looming dangerously, but after the courts were dried following the morning shower, the rubber was
able to commence on time. Number 1 doubles, Brian and Patrick got us a positive 1-0 start with a
dominant doubles display, winning 6-2 6-1. Number 2 doubles, Frank and Lachlan continued their
sensation form in doubles with a comfortable, 6-0 6-2 win. Unfortunately number 3 doubles, Adam
and Josh weren’t able to complete the clean sweep in the doubles, going down 2-6 2-6. In
the singles, Brian, Patrick, Frank and Adam quickly took to the court searching for quick matches
to get the valuable points in the rubber. However, a heavy passing shower affected play early in
all matches. After an hour and a half rain delay, the boys were looking forward to getting back
on the court when a controversial decision was made by the Joeys coaches that the courts were too
wet even though it was evident that the courts were dry. The rubber was once again abandoned as a
result of the total playing time on court being less than 3 hours. The final result, High
finishing the season on a positive note despite the remaining matches, 6.5 matches to 5.5
matches. Luckily for us, the other rubbers between the other schools went our way with High
remaining in 4th place to finish the season with 32.5 matches. With the season finished, a
special mention must go to all those involved, MIC of Tennis Mr Wright, Head Coach David Deep, TJ
and Josh Tassell. 2nd Grade
Last Saturday our team faced St Joseph’s College in a bottom of the table clash. To avoid
finishing last overall we needed to win 10-2. In our No 2 and 3 doubles we found ourselves on the
back foot due to a lack of experience and mediocre volleying. This caused us to lose both matches
in quick succession 1-6 2-6 and 1-6 3-6. In our No 1 doubles James Chan teamed up with debutant
Eddy in a close match that we were unlucky not to win, the final score being 5-7 5-7. The singles
matches that followed were interrupted by rain, disappointing as we had several of those matches
under control. James Chan was 3 games away from taking out the match, and No 4 James Chee a
tiebreaker. The final score read 9.5-2.5 in favour of Joeys, leaving us at the bottom of the
ladder at the conclusion of the 2012 season. Next season we will retain most of our players,
which will hopefully help us to improve on this season’s result. End of Season Tennis BarbequeFollowing the 2nd grade rubber at High against Joeys, tennis players from all different Year groups attended the end of season tennis barbeque which was held for the first time ever. There was a great turnout of players and parents who turned up for a fun night of tennis games. The night was a huge success with wide range of games on offer, such as beat the 1st grader, beat the pro who was Catherine Barclay, and also the speed serve. It was great to see all the tennis players from all Years having a good time. Special thanks to everyone who made the night possible. In The SwimQualifying, GPS Carnival 4, St Ignatius’ CollegeThe GPS Swimming season is drawing to a close with our last chance to impress for CIS representation this Friday at SOPAC. As usual, High did not take the meet at Riverview’s Gartlan Centre light-heartedly. This week our MIC wants particularly to thank the Division Swimmers and their parents for their efforts. Some of these boys turn up for one or two swims. Special mention must go to Serag Saleh Year 11 who had the outstanding sportsmanship to fill in gaps in our depleted 17 year old age group. Daniel Wei turned up sick to represent this group last week – huge thanks. Andrew Fong has filled reliably for the 18s. Thanks also to Ming Chin who gave up another activity temporarily to help out. Thanks to Corey Won (12), Jake Davis (15), James Tinker (14) (who is more of a fixture) Michael Jun (15) also and Cameron Ma (12) for filling gaps. Despite the fact that last week’s carnival did not count towards the overall point score, High swimmers put in an Olympic effort. Some of the best performances from our team are as follows:

Unfortunately, despite our fantastic efforts and excellent results, High is unable to take out any of the three GPS Swimming titles. However, we are still proving to be a team to be taken seriously, with the following point score placements:

Last minute changes have to reach Mrs Crothers before 6pm so she can notify convenors at the pool before races begin. There are to be no surprises stepping onto the blocks. Boys who received new caps please pay Mrs Crothers $4.50 at GPS this week. Boys without caps can purchase them from the High Store. Mrs Crothers efforts are improving at giving our reliable fillers in and Division Swimmers more swims. Apologies to anyone she has neglected or offended while learning how Swimming worked.

GPS Premiers (Back to Back) The Editor's Experience by Chris ChiamAs has been the tradition of past Shootin’ Hoops editors, for my last edition I get to reflect on my experiences in the Basketball program. In Year 7, my summer sports days were likely to be filled by "sport development" at the Bat and Ball every week, when Mr Hayman asked if I would be interested in becoming a statistician for our first and second grade teams. Back then my interest and knowledge of basketball went little further than knowing that you scored by getting it in the hoop, but none the less I took up the offer as a way of staying involved in the school. I have to say, that was one of the best decisions I've made during my time at High. Over the years as a statistician, and later on as the editor of this column also, I've become a keen fan of basketball but also gained some great memories; games won with last second shots, the thrill of games going into overtime and watching with awe the ability of our first and second grade sides. The one thing I've learnt, and the message I'd like to pass on to all High boys is this: however you can, become involved with the school in as many ways possible. Whilst my involvement in the basketball program was rather unorthodox, I have no regrets and can honestly say that my commitment to the program was much more rewarding than not participating at all each week. I urge everyone to somehow become involved, whether as a player, supporter or scorer, and maintain the proud tradition of High basketball of playing hard, playing smart and playing together!
