High Notes, Vol 13 No 6, March 09 2012

From the Principal
High Talent
At the GPS Swimming carnival at SOPAC on Friday night last, the High
team performed creditably .Kazuo Nakamura (14 years) won the 50m freestyle and 50m fly, was 2nd
in the 100 fly and 3rd in the100m backstroke. Leonard Mah was runner up in three events –
15 years 100m and 50m freestyle and the 50m breast stroke. Darren Chien won the 15-16 100m breast
stroke and was runner up in the 50m. Kevin Guo won the 50m breaststroke and was 2nd in the 100m.
Harvey Luo placed 2nd in the 12 years 50m breast stroke and backstroke. Michael Sawang was 2nd in
the 15 years 50m back stroke and Eugene Lee 2nd in the 16 years 50m fly. Jason Qiu placed 3rd in
the 100m freestyle and Kim Kyne was 3rd in the 14 years 50m breast stroke. Members of the
successful 16 years 4 x 50m medley relay team were: Eugene Lee, Yu Peng Man, Dominic Mah and
Darren Chien. Eugene Lee, Michael Sawang, Yu Pang Man and Leonard Mah placed 3rd in the 15-16 4 x
50 freestyle relay. At the Zone carnival our Age champions were: Harvey Luo (12 years), Michael
Sawang 15 years and the 14 years was shared among Kazuo Nakamura, Jacob Katafono and Adam
Smagarinsky. Congratulations to all our swimmers! Well done to Shobhan Baranwal (10) on his award
of the green (Adventurer) cord from the North Sydney Scouts Association.
From blended delivery to normalised digital pedagogy
Mal Lee, in Australian
Teacher Magazine, term 1 2012, takes up the issue of wasted technology. His main point is
that if teachers are not routinely using technology, then their students, at least at school,
will not use the devices they have been issued with. [ At High we have had a blended delivery
model for some years where teachers control the mix of ICT, traditional instruction and laptop
use.] He applauds the astute 24/7/365 use of technology by some schools in partnership with
parents. He refers to “the evolution of a more networked and collaborative mode of
schooling” - a goal of what we are trying to accomplish at High. Does our school really
work “within a networked operational paradigm”…and have we “normalised
the use of the digital in the everyday teaching of all staff”…and are we
“collaborating every day with our homes” to teach our students better? We have been
stressing a learning model where our teachers collaborate with each other and encourage the
students to do the same. However, in a society in which schooling accounts for only 20% of a
young person’s annual teaching and learning time, what are we trying to do to influence our
students’ learning in the other 80% of their time? Schools are now integrating their
digital and teaching capacity with that of their young people’s homes. Have we a genuine
belief in the value of authentic and open collaboration with students and parents in their homes?
The smart approach to technological advancement is to introduce a policy of BYOT- bring your own
technology. In such a model the school provides the infrastructure and the student’s home
provides the “preferred personal mobile technology”. “Personal choice,
preference and the market determine the choice and purchase of the home/student persona
technology. The notebook is fast disappearing from the market. Our reliance on the ICT expert
model ought to disappear too. I am interested in parent reaction to the possibilities of opening
up more pathways for teacher-parent collaboration in learning. Parents can access a great deal of
information through the Parent Portal about when, where, what and how their sons will be taught
and assessed. Perhaps more structures can be devised to make learning more effective and improve
student outcomes.
SBHS Library Fund Committee
The SBHS Library Fund Committee (K.Jaggar, J. Walker, E.
Sadler) met this week (6/3/2012) to review the progress of the two library program and to assess
future library needs for the school. The 2011 financials for the SBHS Library Fund were: balance
bf $23,217; receipts $125,260; payments $126,625 – books, magazines, subscriptions,
consumables $24181, wages for Librarian, SAO, overtime and archives $100,334; maintenance $249;
capital equipment $1861; and balance cf $21,852. In addition, $8271 was spent from the school
account. The operations of the two libraries are sustainable but ongoing improvement will not be
possible without either a higher overall compliance rate from parent donations to the Fund or a
higher amount than $125 per family to be suggested. It was agreed that a five-year plan for the
libraries was needed. Given the annual expenditure of resources ($113 per student), it was agreed
that an evaluation of the first five years of operation of the two libraries ought to be
undertaken. It would be helpful if the Committee had data on: usage by boys, numbers and high
demand times, student satisfaction – how well they think the libraries serve them –
the adequacy of facilities and resources, borrowing habits and improvements needed. The Committee
was interested in exploring possibilities to expand the supervised area of the Senior Library
during peak usage time to promote more cooperative work but also to allow more opportunity for
areas of quiet study.

What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library
Great new resources are currently arriving in the Senior Library and will soon be
available for loan. As previously announced there are some resources that have been allocated as
“In Library Use” only and are available from behind the front desk for Period loans.
These include popular and recent study guides in the Coroneos Publications series, Cambridge
Checkpoints 2011 and 2012 HSC and new Preliminary (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) courses, plus
English resources on Belonging and Advanced Modules and Electives by Barbara Stanners also UMAT
resources including new ones on order, umat 123.
Cambridge are once again running their Photo Competition where students can win an iPad and have
their photos published on Cambridge Checkpoints HSC 2013 covers! Competition details are at:
Have a look at
the current copies of Cambridge Checkpoints in various subjects for ideas and get snapping!
Recently I have had enquiries about how to purchase personal copies of the Checkpoints books for
$21.00 instead of RRP of $28.00! So if interested, students can purchase the books themselves
through Sydney Books Online @ their website. If you would like to make enquiries you can also
ring them on 02-95593220.

Mr Cipolla
Die Deutsche Frage Im März
Last week’s photo was taken in a large German department store cum supermarket (Karstadt
for those in the know) and I immediately had a mental image of impecunious Aussi backpackers
slaving away in a cool room to produce hand-made Australian ice cream. Not so – the product
comes from Holland and it was identified by Kabir Agrawal (Yr 8)! The price in Euros as
well as the German spelling “Eiscreme” were the clues.
Today’s question once again requires keen eyes and it is a return to more familiar
territory: “Blut wo??? "

SBHS Debating
MIC Report
It was great to see so many new faces at the Debating Supporters Group meeting and the Parents
Information Evening on Thursday. We welcome the contributions of all parents and, in fact, we
cannot function successfully without support from the parent body. If you were unable to attend
the meeting but would like to get involved please do not hesitate to contact me.
One key part of the evening I would like to emphasize is about how parents can support debating
- At the very least please make sure you send food to school if your son is debating at home
and that your son always has a safe form of transport home from the debate.
- Ensure that you have signed up to the Gmail account and regularly check your emails.
- Read the High Notes and talk to your son about the debating program. • You could
volunteer to help out with suppers.
- You could volunteer to do parking
- You could consider taking one of the positions in the DSG.
- Watch your son debate.
- Please pay your co-payments.
A reminder that this week co-payments are due. I have finalised numbers in coaching now and we
have 244 students who are attending coaching each week. This is a huge increase from last year
and a wonderful boost for the programme. Our co-payments represent extremely good value as the
Program runs for 24 weeks and we have such fantastic coaches to support the boys in developing
their debating skills. In addition we enter 4 major competitions more than all other schools.
Please, when you receive your invoice, pay promptly.

Debating Prefect Report
After a long break from debating the first round is always tough, but High managed to start the
year very well last week, taking on Scots in Eastside and Knox in the Friday Evening Debating
competition. In the Eastside competition the Year 7s, experiencing their first taste of high
school debating, managed to grab their first of hopefully many wins, though unfortunately the
Year 8 and 9 teams lost their debates. Similarly in FED we had mixed results in the juniors, with
the Year 7 and 9 teams losing but our Year 8s pulling out a win. However the standout performance
has to go to our senior teams, who won all their debates in both competitions. A lesson for all
our juniors: stick with the debating program and the improvement by the senior years is massive,
and watching senior debates is a great way to learn and improve.

1st Grade
After an ecstatic win over Grammar, the boys headed into the final home match with confidence and
momentum facing a strong Kings outfit. However, torrential rain all week forced the boys to
prepare indoors rather than training out on-court. Saturday didn’t turn out to be much
different with the boys turning up to find the courts under water. After having to dry the courts
the rubber was able to be commenced at 12:45pm. Number 3 doubles, Robert and Adam unfortunately
lost quickly against opponents who were just more experienced and consistent, 0-6 0-6. Frank and
Lachlan in the number 2 doubles trailed 3-4 in the first set before a momentum swing of 6
straight games saw us take out the first set and establish a good lead in the second before rain
affected play, 6-4 3-0 unfinished. Number 1 doubles, Brian and Patrick were looking to fight back
in the second set after losing the first, however their match was also affected by rain, 2-6 1-2
unfinished. After numerous attempts to dry the courts, 3 to be exact, the persistent rain
unfortunately forced the rubber to be abandoned. The final result, 6.5 to 5.5 matches in favour
of Kings, an unfortunate result for the boys with the number 3 doubles going down just before the
rain. However, despite the result High remains in 5th position with an excellent opportunity next
week against Joeys to finish a respectable 4th place.

2nd Grade
On Saturday our team faced a strong Kings side. We were lucky to get on court, there being rain
right up until 11am. In all three doubles matches our team found ourselves on the back foot with
Kings serving big and dominating at the net. We were unable to win any of these matches even
though all our score lines improved in the second set. In the singles Kings continued their good
momentum, and won all their matches easily. We finished the day down 9 matches to 0, a
disappointing score line on our behalf. We hope to improve upon this performance when we play St
Joseph’s College next week in what will be a battle for seventh place.

In the Swim
Swimming Team Meeting
Max Chien, Year 12, was elected to the Captain’s
position and George Dzero Year 11 was elected as Vice Captain. A big thank you to Shaun Pak who
resigned from his Vice Captain’s position as he is already Captain of Water Polo. Thanks to
Ennes Mehemedbasic whose stalwart contribution to the High Swimming Squad will be sorely missed.
Swimmers were asked to assist the MIC by taking on various duties. Swimming will become very
self- serve like a supermarket with swimmers asked to put their own swimming times into
spreadsheets on the R Drive and a “Latest Notice” board being set up on the R Drive
to remind everyone of things needing doing. Thank you to James Chee who is taking on the In the
Swim High Notes Article. (He can do with some help) Year 10s could assist by constructing a
swimming Website?? Any volunteers see Mrs Crothers.
All swimmers are to check their GPS latest Program which will go into the R drive every Wednesday
before a swim. Any swimmer who cannot make it is to find a same age replacement and email this
information to Mrs Crothers before school ends on Friday. Only in severe emergencies are they to
call Mrs Crothers on her mobile before 6pm at the Pool. This mobile number can be found in the R
drive/Swimming/MIC Contact
Combined High Schools Eastern Suburbs Zone Carnival Report – results on Corkboard &
R Drive
The depth and strength of the High Squad was demonstrated by the results of the
Eastern Suburbs Zone Carnival which was held last week. 58 swimmers came in 1st place. 32
swimmers got 2nd place and 7 got 3rd place. These places would be impossible to achieve unless
the boys trained many mornings a week. High is grateful to swimmers and their parents training
commitment.
Swimmers, mindful of a full GPS Swimming Program the next night, and for many a Saturday follow
up with other GPS Commitments, avoided the 200 metre swims but participated with great success in
the other events. The “unreal” trophy goes to Harvey Luo (Year 7) and Jason Qiu
who each swam in 9 events with Kazuo Nakamura (Year 8) close behind swimming in 8 events.

Our dominant performance against Kings last week meant that with one game remaining we are equal
first on the table with Scots. It is possible for us to be outright premiers if Shore beats Scots
this week, which is possible given how close the competition has been this season. For the final
game of the season (and for our seniors the last GPS game they will play in the blue and brown)
please come and support our first grade side at Joeys!!!
THANK YOU
With our final home game for the season completed, now would be a good time to thank all the
supporters who turn up for our home games. It is really important that we create a strong "High"
atmosphere to exploit the advantage that a home fixture gives us and I'm proud to say that the
majority of games have been well attended.

High Tide
Sydney Boys High School Sailing
3 March 2012 Sydney High hosted it first official regatta last week as part of the old
Tri-Series, in Double Bay. The wind was a fresh 10-15 knots with rain squalls frequently moving
across the course. With the additional swell/bump and with the fresher wind Sydney High sailors
were given an advantage of using their home turf, in Double Bay, off Point Piper.
The results were not outstanding although the yardstick of three top ten places was met in the
first “long course “ race was met in the first race. The results in the second race
were less impressive due to bad starts by many High sailors. This aspect of sailing needs to be
improved in the future to ensure a better overall result.
Again the better sailors of Cranbrook and Scots were the ones to beat with Ennes Mehmedbasic the
only standout High sailor this week. His consistency of results should place him well in the
overall point score for Saturdays. Marcus James sailed well to gain a 5th and 13th place and
Daniel Fang and David Evans both managed a top ten finish helped by their crews. Sydney High
crews still need to learn their rules of sailing to ensure that they are not disadvantaged by
other sailors during races. It is essential for skippers and crews to make their courses and
rights known to other boats in the race.
Also High crews must try to think more strategically in their races, not just follow the leader.
Knowledge of the flags on the start boat would also need further study to ensure their
understanding of the course being sailed.
Special thanks to Tim Zhang, Vincent Xu, Dexter Gordon, York Wang and Mr N. Evans who volunteered
their time on the start boat as race officials.

Big Night Out
A reminder that the Big Night Out, our only whole of school social event, is being held on
Sunday 1 April at 5:00pm –just over three weeks away. Tickets for the event will be
on sale at the General Office from Monday 12 March. Tickets cost $20.00 (per head) from
the office or $25.00 at the door. Please remember to send your boy to school with your ticket
order and payment as soon as possible.
We would be grateful if you could buy your tickets at the General Office rather than at the door,
as it is of great benefit to our catering volunteers in providing an accurate number for
catering. Remember that the whole family is welcome. The BNO is excellent value with 3 courses
and a full schedule of entertainment including music, dance, theatre and games at just $20.00 a
head. Drinks will be available for purchase on the night or you may BYO if you prefer. We look
forward to seeing you there.
P&C General Meeting Wednesday 21 March
The next P&C General Meeting will be held in the staff common room at 7pm on Wednesday 21
March.
Please note the date in your diary. At this meeting, parents need to consider the P&C budget
and spending priorities for the coming year. It’s very important that parents take this
chance to have their say on projects the P&C should be considering. Dr Jaggar will address
the meeting on the School’s project priorities for 2012. The P&C Levy, which you pay as
part of your annual fee contribution, entitles you to vote at meetings, including on P&C
spending priorities.
Upcoming P&C Parking Events
Saturday 10 March 7:45pm – Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory (Music)
Sunday 11 March 3:00pm – Roosters v Panthers (Basketball)
Saturday 17 March 7:40pm – Waratahs v Western Force (Rugby)
Sunday 18 March 2:00pm –Roosters v NZ Warriors (School)
We remind parents that parking provides valuable funds for our sons’ co-curricular
activities- so if you haven’t volunteered previously, please consider involving yourself.
It requires no experience and provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy a chat with other
parents (before it gets busy).
