Student Award Scheme – Presentation Assemblies
At the High Senior school assembly, there were 79 awards made to Year 10 students from 2011 and
62 awards to Year 11, 2011. We hope that more boys stay involved longer during their High school
career. It is a good sign to employers of your character and commitment that you can stick with
activities and responsibilities for six years. Overall, participation levels were higher in 2011
than in 2010, despite the fact that electronic recording and verification procedures made
compliance tighter and accountability more rigorous. 
Year 7 CampIn week 4 this year, all 180 Year 7 boys eagerly awaited their first camp at Sydney Boys High School. The boys were filled with mixed feelings. Was camp going to be tiring? Was it going it to be the time of their life? Were they going to miss their family? But the answer to these questions was all going to be revealed in the next three days. As the bus left Driver Ave, the boys waved their final goodbyes and then were happily talking to each other and playing games for the bus journey. After around ninety minutes on the bus, having reached Morisset, the boys enthusiastically hopped off and camp officially began. On the three days of camp, the boys took part in many activities, some of the most enjoyable being sailing at Lake Macquarie, the giant swing and most of all, the commando challenge at night. Many of the activities were very challenging, including the high ropes course and leap of faith. In the end though, most boys successfully completed these activities, in many cases conquering their fears!
By the end of camp, everyone had enjoyed a variety of activities together and got to know their
classmates well. And overall, the feedback was that their first camp at SBHS was a great
experience.
From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.

2012 NSW School-Based Vaccination ProgramThe NSW Ministry of Health has been informed that a small number of Parent Information Kits which contain forms for parents to read and sign for school vaccination may be missing important information. Please check that all information is included in the Parent Information Kits:
If all the information is included and you would like your child to be vaccinated, please read the Information for you and your child sheet, sign the Consent Form and return the signed Consent Form to your child’s school. If you do NOT wish your child to be vaccinated, do NOT complete or return the Consent Form. If any information is missing from your Parent Information Kit, please contact your child’s school immediately and a replacement Kit will be provided.

SBHS DebatingMIC’s CommentIt has been very busy with the organisation for our first debates on Friday. We are hosting both competitions and so it looks set to be a very busy night. There has been a change to the start times for Eastside so it is important to note that Juniors will prep at 5.30 and debate at 6.30 and Seniors will prep at 6.30 and debate at 7.30pm. The times for FED will remain the same: prep at 6pm, debate at 7pm for Juniors and for Seniors to prep at 7pm and debate at 8pm. The Junior Coordinators are going to rotate the teams from each class so that as many students as possible can have the opportunity to debate. Juniors are encouraged to take this opportunity to develop their skills before GPS try outs take place later in the year.
This will be the last week of coaching before Co-Payment invoices are sent out. I have spent time
each week walking around and the behaviour of the boys is excellent. This suggests that they are
all enthusiastic. However, it is early days and you must ensure your son is committed to seeing
the debating program through because if he is being disruptive or not concentrating in coaching I
will ask him to leave – and there will be no refunds for co-payments. Debating Prefect’s CommentAt the conclusion of coaching at around 4:45 anyone debating that night is free to go and have dinner, whether it be bought (the traditional High venue is the Golden Pide on Cleveland Street) or brought in from home. Debaters are expected to be back at least 10 minutes before the distribution of topics, which for Eastside is 5:30 for juniors and 6:30 seniors, with FED juniors being at 6 and FED seniors at 7. Chairpeople need to report to Ms Powell 10-15 minutes before the debate so she can provide them with a bell and timer (keep an eye on the mango sheet during the week to see when there are opportunities to chair, award scheme points apply!). Each team has a responsibility to set up their room for the debate and fix it at the end. At the end of each debate a light supper is provided for debaters. Everyone who debates (including chairpeople) for that week must provide something for the supper. Any food that requires refrigeration can be left in the Staff Common Room fridge on Friday morning, but it must be clearly marked with "DEBATING" so that it is not eaten by mistake.
For junior debaters, your debates finish before the senior debates start. It is a great idea to
watch the senior debates as they are of a very high quality and watching them will help you
improve. If you have any questions about the debate then you can ask the senior boys afterwards,
as they will be happy to help. Competitions

ChessINTERSCHOOL COMPETITION 2012Want to be part of our successful Chess teams? Selection Tournament on Friday, 16 March If you wish to be considered for one of the Chess teams that will represent Sydney High in the Friday interschool competition you must compete in the selection tournament. Where & When: Great Hall, Friday, 16 March 8.00am – 3pm Please note an early start. You need to be in the hall before 8.00am. Who can enter: only the students who are committed to represent Sydney High in the interschool competition.

SBHS RugbyHigh Rugby = High Spirit Year 7 House Oz Tag competitionThe 2012 Year 7 House Oz Tag competition will be running on the 13th and 15th of March at lunch time. The teams will be made up of 9 representatives from each class, with 6 taking the field at any one time. The schedule of events will be as follows:
Rules Senior and Junior Oz Tag competitionsThe junior competition will run from March 21-23 and all students in Year 8 and Year 9 may compete. Waratahs vs Reds GameOn February 25th Year 8 and Year 9 Rugby players went to the NSW Waratahs vs. Qld Reds game and walked onto the stadium as part of the March Past program NSW were running. The boys enjoyed the feeling of being on the field and were able to experience what it was like to be in the centre of such a large stadium. Pre-Season Rugby Training 2012Training has already begun and with the season approaching all rugby players are encouraged to turn up to the Wednesday morning sessions between 7.30-8.30 at MPW. Sydney Boys High School Cricket
1st XI – High arrived early to the ground excited to make it two wins in a row after their success last week. On a pitch that had a bit for both teams, High was sent into the field and started brilliantly. Anirudh took 3 wickets in the opening spell and High was on top throughout. However a large 9th and 10th wicket partnership allowed Grammar back into the game and they were bowled out for 134. However this is as positive as the game got for the High boys. Sydney High suffered a succession of batting collapses in chasing the smallish total, being bowled out for 88. If it wasn’t for a stubborn batting display by Agnish the total could have been much smaller. High bowled to Grammar once more for the last 9 overs and great bowling from the boys resulted in 3 wickets to end the day. Hopefully, we can earn an outright win next Saturday.
2nd XI – On arrival at the ground and with a pitch inspection producing a “bat-first” decision if we won the toss soon disappeared when Grammar won and chose to bat. Our first wicket was a run-out in the 4th over through a superb return from the outfield by the captain Sai and Grammar were 1 / 4. Some untidy bowling produced sundries over several overs, giving Jesse plenty of work behind the stumps and he saved many through his work both sides of the wicket, until Tushaar captured a plumb LBW in the 13th over. Dhruv clean bowled Grammar’s No 4 and 3 overs later Anup had Sachin take a great catch off his bowling. Thilan then checked in capturing the valuable LBW 5th wicket just before lunch, and have Grammar 5 /56 (29) which included 11 extras. The coach changed the team plan at lunch to provide changes of pace in attack and add pressure and doubt at the crease for Grammar’s remaining batsmen, and in an amazing 10 over spell High took 5 /18 with wickets from Thilan, Sai, Tushaar and Dhruv including another run-out. High started their innings carefully but in the 4th over Lalitha (3) was the first to go through a smart catch and we were 1 /11. Tushaar who had been moved to the No.3 batting position, joined Thilan then on 24, and established a solid foundation with great shot selections, sparkling drives and glances until in the 21st over when we lost Tushaar, LBW for 13 within striking distance for a first innings win, with the score at 2 /48. Still needing 27, Shivaangar joined Thilan and in a steady partnership with great control and consistent ones and twos, High passed Grammar's score in the 34th over. Thilan (33) who opened for us and batted through, becoming the architect of the innings, and had added to his 2 wickets in a sustained effort throughout, was our man-of-the-hour. At stumps Shiva 12n.o and Daniel 10 n.o were at the crease and High was 10 runs in front and 6 premiership points to start next week.

16Bs – Looking forward to a good match High marched onto the field. Fielding first was not the preferred option but it looked as if it turned out to be the better option. Despite some early chances for wickets lost, a good pressure was mounting up on grammar with Sai opening up the attack with a maiden and only 3 runs given away off the first over by Haotian. The field soon fired up and we were able to take some catches. We lost our momentum when our bowlers started pitching balls shorter letting a lot of boundaries fly. Jason scraped up a wicket to break a painful silence and soon we were batting. A sluggish start was outdone by a half century from Sai, batting superbly and inspiring others to do better. Batting improved greatly with better timing of shots from batsmen all round despite racking up low scores. Playing to the end High ended their innings with a four and despite the loss, we had a good match. Good effort boys.

15Bs – The week leading up to the game was shaky, with many of our star players getting the call to move up to the A team, but we were still determined to achieve our third win in a row. We lost the toss and were sent in to bowl, getting an early wicket in the 7th over through Yoshika. However, the celebration was short lived, as the two batsmen at the crease took control of the field, taking their score to 102 before we took a wicket. From there, wickets fell in quick succession, but the damage was done, and our total was set to a massive 185 runs. Outstanding run scorers in a valiant chase were Thomas, who showed his usual persistence at the crease knocking a solid 25 runs, and Yoshika who once again dazzled us with a quick fire 22 runs near the end of the game. Our total added to 114 all out, a disappointing loss, but still a great performance by the team.
15Cs –
14As – After winning the toss and electing to bat, High got off to a shaky start, losing their first wicket in only the 3rd over. Unfortunately, Shashank was also dismissed just before drinks after he and Thomas were beginning to steady the innings. A great partnership between Thomas and Karthik which nearly lasted the whole 2nd hour placed High in a strong position. Their 65 run partnership lasted 17 overs. A mini collapse of 5/16 however saw High in major trouble and sink to 7/119 after 42. A great fight back by Raphin and the tail made sure High did not capitulate but survive another 17 overs and add a vital 57 more runs to the total. High on Day 2 will need to bowl consistent attacking lines and pounce on any opportunities if they are to record a win.

13As – Grammar won the toss and asked High to bowl. We started off well until Grammar decided to go for hits. The first wicket went in the 9th over. Then Akeedh Razmi came into the attack quickly taking 2 wickets. They continued to smash but Sidney was brought into bowl where he got 2 awesome wickets. The overs were all gone before we could get the wickets. High came into bat with one thought in mind. Unfortunately one of the openers and first drop got out very quickly. Louis, who was our other opener, batted through the game achieving a total of 50 runs not out. Unfortunately our other batsman got out and at the end we were not able to reach the total.

Another strong win kept High at the top of the table, and leaves us well placed to claim a premiership for this season. However, there are still two more games to go and they are “must wins” for us to remain at the top of the ladder. Come and support our first grade side and join them on the ride to becoming back to back GPS Basketball premiers! (A feat which has never happened before at our school.) Final Home Game of the SeasonThe final home game of the season is this week against King’s, and for our senior players the final game they get to play at High in the GPS. So please come and watch the 1st and 2nd grade games and give our senior players the farewell that they deserve! Annual Basketball DinnerThe date for this year's basketball dinner is 30th March, which is week 10 of this term. Tickets will be on sale soon and can be purchased from the payments office in the foyer. Keep an eye out in the High notes over the coming weeks for more information and an order form, and make sure you buy your tickets early! Sydney Boys High School TennisHigh vs Grammar
1st Grade
1st Grade headed out to Weigall on Saturday to face rivals Grammar in a much anticipated match-up
late in the season. The day started off extremely well with Patrick and Frank, dominating the
number 1 doubles with a strong display of serving and volleying leading to a comfortable straight
sets win, 6-3 6-2. However, the other two doubles were much closer with number 2 doubles pairing,
Lachlan and Rob unlucky to not have won their match, going down in three tight sets, 6-7 6-4
7-10. In the number 3 doubles, Adam and Josh fought back after losing the first set to take out
the tight match in sensational form in the super tiebreak, 4-6 6-4 10-6. After gaining a 2-1 lead
over Grammar after the doubles, the boys went into their singles with extra confidence knowing
that we had our opponents under the pump. In the singles, Patrick had the task of having to step
up to play the number one singles for the second time this season. He put in a solid effort;
however his opponent proved to be too strong in the end, going down 3-6 1-6. Frank raced out of
the blocks quickly in his match leaving his opponent constantly on the back foot, winning 6-2
6-2. Lachlan looked great in the early stages of his match, however allowed the match to slide
out of his grasp, going down in three sets 6-1 1-6 3-6. Number 4, Rob made an impressive return
from injury after being forced out for two weeks due to a quad injury, winning 7-6 6-3. Young
Adam played a highly consistent match to overcome his emotionally unstable opponent, comfortably
winning 6-2 6-2. Finally, number 6 Josh produced some excellent shot making in his match to win
6-2 7-5. The final result, High capping off a sublime day against Grammar comfortably winning 9
points to 3. The huge win over Grammar catapults High, 3 places up the table to 5th, with Kings
and Joeys remaining on our schedule. 2nd Grade
On Saturday our team faced Grammar, confident that we would come out on top if we played to our
strengths. The day started off well for us, with our No 1 doubles combination of Anton and James
Chan beating their opponents in dominant fashion 6-2 6-1. In the No 2 doubles our team fought
hard to get themselves into a tiebreak in the first set, but this was not enough to earn them the
win. After a great performance against Iggies we knew also that our No 3 doubles were a solid
pairing. Although they were able to win a close first set, their opponents fought back, winning
in a super tie breaker. After losing in 3 sets the previous week, Anton and James were looking to
go one better against Grammar. Anton’s attacking game and consistency from the baseline
proved to be too much for his opponent, the final score being 6-3 6-2 to Anton. As the day drew
to a close we were down 4 matches to 2, with James Chan, Ian and James Chee all finding
themselves in close three set matches. From here on Grammar stepped up their game and finished
all matches in quick succession, with the third set scores reading 2-6, 0-6 and 0-6 respectively.
The day ended 7 matches to 2, with Grammar picking up the extra 3 bonus points. Congratulations
to Anton Brokman for winning both of his matches. It should be noted that if our team had won all
4 of our three set encounters, we would have found ourselves up 5 matches to 4 and also gaining
the bonus points. We hope to improve on this when we face the confident outfit of King’s
next week. 16s Tennis
There were more positive results from the 16s this week against Grammar. The highlights of the
weekend were wins from the four As/Ds doubles teams, all won in close tie-breaks. It was great to
see that High could battle it out and take control in tie-break situations, something that
requires a lot of mental strength and courage. The overall game tallies were as follows: As drew
2-2 with 2 games unable to be played because of time constraints, Bs lost 1-3 (with 2 games
halted midway), Cs drew 3-3 (with 2 games won due to forfeit) and Ds won 4-1 with Darren
Li’s game unfortunately halted at 5-4.
Water Polo 2011-2012Congratulations to the Opens and 14 Years Water Polo teams on their great results over the past few weeks. The 14 Years team has won 3 out of their past 4 matches, while the 1st Grade team have had convincing wins in the CHS Eastern Suburbs knockout tournament, beating Sydney Tech and Caringbah before losing to the impressive Kirrawee High team, who are widely tipped to win the state championship. Water Polo runs as a combined GPS-CAS competition, and in the 2011-2012 season High entered a team in each of the three age divisions. We have had a number of new students join water polo this season, especially a large number of Year 12s eager to try something new for their last summer season! All three teams have shown a lot of commitment throughout the season, with all players improving throughout the year. We are always on the lookout for new players, particularly as we are about to lose a number of our valuable Year 12 players, which will open up a number of places in the 1st grade team. Trials for the 2012-2013 season will be held in mid-term 3 this year, so see Ms Davis for a winter training schedule, and start swimming!
AAGPS Head of the River 2012Attendance at the GPS Head of the River is strongly encouraged for all students to support our rowing crews. Attendance by students (in full school uniform) is recognised by 5 points in the School Award scheme. This is a big day on the AAGPS school calendar and is quite a spectacle with all GPS schools attending. It is the day everyone works towards, a day filled with history and tradition, where all schools congregate with school pride. We are there too, with our High chants, colours and banners. If there is one day you should experience while at High it is the Head of the River! Where: Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith When: Saturday 10 March 2012 How: Supporters will depart from the school bus stop on Anzac Parade at 7.45am and return to the school at approximately 1.30pm. Cost: $15 for a subsidised ticket (incl. transport and entry), paid to the school office by Wednesday 7 March.
SHS RowingSydney High Regatta ResultsWhat a great finale to the AAGPS Regatta season. High hosted the last regatta of the season and we achieved 5 2nds and 3 3rds on the day. Not only that, the Boat Race Officials claimed it was the best run regatta in the 2011–12 GPS season … so well done to all who contributed. Our new intake Year 9 boys competed in the 5th Quad division and after only rowing for three weeks put in a great row in a respectable time. Well done to Andrew Lu, Neil Song, Jake Davis, Zac Hung, and the ‘speedboat driver’, George Han-McEvoy. Outstanding performances at the High Regatta -
Sydney Rowing Club RegattaOur School 1st and 2nd VIII competed at SIRC and both crews showed improvement. The 1st VIII raced in a time of 6.29.79 and the 2nd VIII, who have been shaving seconds off each week, did a personal best time of 6.40.28. Upcoming Rowing Events
Rowing DinnerWe had over 200 people, including rowers, parents, coaches and staff, fill the Great Hall for the Rowing Dinner on Wednesday night. It was a very special night for the GPS rowers as they now approach the Head of the River. I think everyone in the hall would have been impressed with our rowers. The speeches and presentations of crews were outstanding by Stuart Benjamin, Year 8 Quads, Jesse Nixon, Year 9 Quads, Ray Fang, Year 10 VIIIs, and Captain of Boats, Andreas Purcal, School VIIIs. This is the big day on the GPS school calendar and it is quite a spectacle with all GPS schools attending. We have our own decorated marquee so put on the blue and brown and come and cheer! All rowing parents are invited back to the sheds for a social afternoon, with a presentation at approximately 3.00pm to thank everyone involved in the season – coaches, staff, committee, parents and the boys.

FITNESS ASSESSMENT FEBRUARY 2012 An assessment of 90% or better required a student to run the 1.6km in a time of 6 mins 30 secs, approximately, depending on the age of the student. An assessment of 50% or better, required a time of between 7 and 8 minutes, depending on age. A result of 10% or less means the 1.6km run was completed in a time greater than 9 mins 30 seconds. Each student in Years 7 – 9 should have a copy of their assessment schedule and results for February 2012 in their PDHPE theory books. Parents are encouraged to review their son’s results with them. There were some outstanding performances again this semester including, Ruilin Zhang (7T) 6m 38s, Adam Smagarinski (8.5) 6m 11s, Luke Hoad (9.2) 5m 40s and Eugene Lee (10.4) 5m 19s. * Fastest times are held by Year 10 Sam Lane (2009) 4m 54s, Year 9 Sam Lane (2008) 4m 53s, Year 8 Eugene Lee (2010) 5m 12s and Year 7 Eugene Lee (2009) and Luke Hoad (2010) 5m 43s.
Mean results for each year group 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012
Year 9 is our fittest cohort at this time of the year and has the highest February fitness mean for Year 9 since 2007. Congratulations. Year 7 (2012) is starting at the same level as Year 7 (2011).
Again this year there is an incentive for boys to achieve and maintain a higher level of aerobic
fitness. If a student can reach his personal goal time on the fourth 1.6k run or run under 6
minutes, he will receive an extra 10% towards his final PDHPE grade which equates to one
assessment grade. Each student should be aware of his goal as they are posted in Room 901.
Hopefully every student will take advantage of this opportunity.

Sydney High Annual Basketball Dinner 2012Celebrate another fantastic year of basketball at High by organising your team to attend the 8th Annual Basketball Dinner and finish the year in winning style!!! Every team will receive trophies for the Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player. 1 minute speeches will be made by staff members about their age groups and players will be able to show their thanks to them as well! (Buy your coach a present) There will be a big screen projection of the Annual Highlight video presentation!
