Presentation Night "Class of 2011, special guest Major-General Smith AO (retired), distinguished guests, prize winners, parents staff and families, welcome to High’s 128th Presentation Night. "The achievements of High boys in 2011 were approximately… sensational. At the 2011 HSC High was ranked 4th on the league table on the back of an outstanding 118 band 6 results in Advanced English, some highest ever mathematics means and great strengths in chemistry. Dennis Kim, Austin Ly, Jeffrey Tang and Max Wei all earned maximum ATARS of 99.95. It appears that 57 boys were ranked at 99 or higher and 89% of the cohort scored 90 ATAR or better. The ATAR average for 207 students was 94.57, a great result, particularly in the year that the first Year 9 class of 2008 graduated. They key to our all-round success was collaboration – by teachers, by students, by parents. "Individual HSC results inside the top ten in the state were: Austin Ly first in physics, Dennis Kim 7th and also Dennis was 5th in chemistry. Derek Wei, 4th in Engineering Studies, Samuel Beston and Jeffrey Tang, top ten in Latin Continuers and also Latin extension for Samuel. There were 7 ENCORE nominations for music and one for ARTEXPRESS. "Declan Gorey was equal first in the UNSW Mathematics Competition and went on to win a silver medal at the Mathematics Olympiad in Amsterdam. Jamieson Thai won a national prize in the UNSW Economics Competition. In the UNSW business studies competition, Jonathan Adhika and Kenny Lau received state prizes. High was ranked first in Australia in the National Geographic Competition for the third time in four years. Ashwin Rudder and Dawen Shi were placed equal first in Australia. Chris Chiam won the Classical Greek reading competition. Nakhul Baghwat won the Trinity Grammar Annual Speaking Competition. "In debating the Karl Cramp PDC competition was won by High for the 14th time but the boys were also GPS second grade champions – a great and rare double. Our chess teams won the Senior and Intermediate divisions of the NSW Interschool competition. Our team won the GPS Championship. The open team finished 4th in the Australian Schools Championship. "The year was important for our social justice programs. Besides the $117k. in money raised, our boys involved themselves personally in many worthwhile charitable organisations and awareness raising projects. Their achievements have raised the profile of the school in the wider community "The standout sporting team for 2011 was Open basketball. They won a GPS Premiership, the CHS Knockout again, the NSW All Schools, the Raschke Cup again and backed up to defend successfully the Australian Schools Championship. Our U15 basketball team won the CHS Knockout. Our Open Volleyball team took out the NSW All Schools Tournament but lost a close 5-setter to Kelso at the CHS Knockout Final. The U16 team won at All Schools and won Division 2 at the national championships in Melbourne. "High boys earned wonderful individual honours in 2011. Chris Morrow won a CHS Blue for Volleyball, toured Thailand with the Australian U19 Volleyball team and won a place in the AIS. Andrija Dumovic toured to Croatia in the U19 Australian basketball team and along with Emmett Naar was selected as an AIS athlete. Lloyd Perris was selected to the AIS for AFL. Amandeep Dhaliwal was selected in the Australian All Stars Volleyball team. Christian Jurlina and Daniel Jones were selected in the CIS basketball team. Combined GPS representatives for football were: Nakul Baghwat, Samuel Lane and Arjun Punekar. Arman Abdollahi and Patrick Rynsaardt made the combined GPS tennis team. Oliver Meroni and Michael Phung were chosen in the CHS cricket team. Congratulations to all our high achievers! "I would like to express my thanks to all our parents who are leaving us tonight and who helped the school in its activities. Without your contributions High could not do what it does. In particular, I would like to thank Fabienne and Charles Ovadia who have served the school so energetically for twelve years – contributing to the P & C, the Canteen Committee, School Council, Big Night Out, rowing, rugby, Parent Mentors and the School Selection Committee. David and Katrina Morrow contributed consistently to athletics, basketball and the School Canteen. Anita Betjak helped in rowing significantly. Deborah Cassells was a stalwart in the debating program and the P & C. "In honour of the Class of 2011’s unprecedented academic, co-curricular and community service achievements, I would like to conclude by posing a few of the big questions that will concern many of you, particularly those who rise to become influential in business, law or public policy. The French poet, Paul Valéry, wrote: “the trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be”. Once there was a societal comfort that the next generation would be guided by the same values, governed by the same institutions and operate in the same economic and social environment, as did the present generation. In the 21st century, the problem is not just unpredictability, it is more like a paradigm shift to uncertainty. Changes everywhere are making the future very much unlike what it was. You will have to help to redefine the context of that future. "What contribution will you make towards living on a fragile, crowded and warming planet? How will you grapple with the problems of global sustainability – ecologically, economically or socio-politically? How will you balance the need for energy, against the problems created by its extraction, such as the coal seam gas mining and north-west shelf gas development controversies. As biomedicine advances you all can expect to live very long lives. What will your attitude be towards bioethical issues surrounding IVF experimentation and designer babies, genetic engineering, organ transplanting or human cloning? Will you work in a modified legal system where universality of application gives way to in a circumscribed pluralism? Will there evolve different legal responses for people of varying cultural, religious and legal traditions? "Geopolitically, you will live through the shift of power from West back to East as the sheer size and energy of China’s economy starts to dominate world trade, overtaking the USA as it struggles with obsolescence and social fracturing caused by the decline of traditional manufacturing in a new world economy. With globalisation of communication via personal devices, will the world move closer to implementing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? Will democracy be the only form of government on the planet by the end of this century? At home, how will you all cope with the marginalisation of Parliament by Executive government and the substitution of spin for debate about policies, legislation and administrative decisions?

SBHS DebatingHello Debating Families I met with all the Junior Debaters on Friday and spent some considerable time telling them about the importance of communication. This week I will begin writing the Teams’ Email which gets sent to everyone on my mailing list. It is absolutely vital that all debating families receive this email as it passes on essential information about the Competitions that we are involved with. Please ensure that either you or your son (or both of you) have sent your email address to me so that I can include you on the email. I also discussed behaviour in coaching sessions which I expect to be of a high standard. The first afternoon of coaching went well and I visited each class. Each week we have a coaching meeting after the students have gone home where our Head Coach discusses, with the Coaches, the progress being made in coaching groups and I will get reports on behaviour. Students who are misbehaving or not taking coaching seriously will be asked to leave. On Thursday 1st March we have a DSG meeting from 5.30-6.30 so please come along if you would like to become an active member of the Debating Supporters group. At 6.30pm the DSG will be hosting an Information Session for parents. This will be a great opportunity for us to tell you about the Sydney Boys High Debating Program and for you to have your questions about debating answered. Our Debating competitions begin on 1st March. The coaches discuss the competitions with students and then on Friday evening I find out who is debating the following week. I will release that information via the teams email over the weekend. IT IS CRUCIAL that students only agree to debate if they know they are free and anyone who cannot debate (due to an emergency or illness) must give me notice so that I can find someone to replace them. Our first competitions are run simultaneously: Friday Evening Debating and Eastside. Sometimes we host the debates and sometimes we are away. I placed the calendar in High Notes two weeks ago and I will be sending it out via email. Most of our debates this year are actually Home Debates, but there are some times where students will have to travel away to different schools. I have booked the minibus to take students to St Joseph’s on 9th March but apart from that I rely on the students either getting public transport to the schools or parents offering to take a team in their car. Boys who are debating at home MUST BRING A PLATE OF FOOD TO SHARE FOR SUPPER. We encourage parents to attend debates and the boys and girls who debate in the competitions really appreciate having an audience. We also encourage the Junior debaters to stay and watch the Seniors debates as they can learn a lot from doing so.

Where & When: Great Hall, Friday, 16 March 8.00am – 3pm Please note an early start. You need to be in the hall before 8.00am. Who can enter: only the students who are committed to represent Sydney High in the interschool competition.
The number of players will be limited to 60. Entry deadline: Friday, 9 March. No entries will be accepted on the day. How to enter: please collect the entry form from Ms Barr at the English Department Staff Room.

GPS Swimming 2012Our first GPS Meet of the season showed that our Swimmers could take the fight to the other GPS Schools. Out of 55 events we had 10 First places, six second placements and 5 thirds. In our relays we came 1st place in 3 out of out of 12 events. However, this was a qualifying Carnival. This week’s Carnival will be a better indication of our real strength but we are in desperate need of 17 Year old contenders as we cannot swim a complete 17s squad – we have only 2 swimmers. We need four with one reserve.
As the GPS report with times is a bit late for this report boys will have to tell Mrs Crothers
their times at the end of each swim.
Peer Mediation at SBHSPeer mediation is a program run by trained Year 11 students which seeks to help solve conflict between students without getting teachers involved. The program helps the students resolve conflicts while under the guidance of two Year 11 students. The program is confidential and stays between the peer mediators (Year 11 students) and the students who have a dispute. How it worksIf you are feeling unhappy with the way another student is treating you, in class, in the playground or on the way to and from school or if you think another student is undermining you behind your back or in cyber space you can do something to stop the problem. You need JavaScript enabled to view it you can request a peer mediation which will result in a resolution and an agreement so that you can get on with the rest of school life in peace. Peer mediations are friendly, unthreatening and quick and have a very high success rate. So don’t put up with feeling unhappy or let things get out of control. Take charge and e mail a request with your details.

Year 10 Rowers Melbourne Trip 2012Last Tuesday, twenty-nine Year 10 rowers left for Melbourne by bus at lunchtime, ready for the second instalment of the Sydney-Melbourne High rowing program. The ten hour drive was split in two, staying overnight at a motel in Holbrook. Arriving at noon the next day at their boatshed, the boys rowed on the Yarra River, welcomed by the spectacular sight of skyscrapers, stadiums and street art as we passed by the CBD. Weary from a day of travelling and sightseeing, we retired to the homes of our billets. On the second day in Melbourne we had three sessions, one of which included a 4km time trial. Eight crews competed, including the three Sydney Year 10 eights (the third of which was split into two quads), the three Melbourne Year 10 eights and a quad. All of the Sydney crews raced well, taking first, second, fourth and sixth place. In the afternoon, the Melbourne boys took us to Crazy Wings, a restaurant where many of our toughest boys were reduced to distressed messes by ridiculously spicy chicken wings. On the final and toughest day the boys raced four times, a 2km, 1km, 800m and 500m. Once again, all of the Sydney High crews raced extremely well. Notably, our 1st Year 10 eight came out on top every time, settling the score with a clean sweep. Finishing off at noon, we spent the day wandering the city, visiting many spectacular tourist sites, playing pool with the Melbourne boys and also visiting an arcade. Rounding off our trip was a barbeque night provided by the Melbourne High fraternity. We were sad to say goodbye to our billets on Saturday morning as we set off for Sydney at seven o’clock.
A big thank you to coaches Shahar Merom and Gareth Deacon, rowing MIC Julie Blomberg and
definitely to the drivers Mr Con Barris and Neville Morgan (Captain of SBHS 1965) for spending so
much time and effort to ensure everything ran smoothly. Without them this trip would definitely
not have been as enjoyable and memorable.

This week Scots play third placed Newington, meaning that it is possible for us to become outright leaders. With the season drawing to the close, every game becomes more crucial so we need YOUR support at all 1st grade games, particularly our home fixture against Kings. Annual Basketball DinnerWith the end of the season coming up, the annual Sydney Boys High Basketball dinner is also approaching. Held at the end of this season, the dinner celebrates the achievements of all teams throughout the year, with awards given to the most improved and most valuable members of each team. As well as this, the highlight is the basketball video for 1st grade featuring some of the coolest moments (lots of dunks and 3 pointers!!!) in this season's games. Keep an eye out in the High Notes for more information regarding dates and times, and most importantly make sure that you're there!

It was a mixed day on the field with several teams scoring fantastic wins, while others squandered promising positions. Congratulations to the 1st XI and their coach Tim Roslin for a very well-deserved win. It’s a great example for all teams that hard work at training pays off in games and with Grammar coming up this week the team finds itself in a great position to storm up the table. Congratulations also to the 15Bs for picking up their second consecutive win and in the process becoming the first junior team to defeat Riverview since 2009.

Athletics 2012Information for Athletes and their ParentsPLEASE NOTE THAT THE 1500m RACE STARTS AT 8.15AM I would like to warmly welcome all athletes, new and old, and their families to the 2012 season. Sydney Boys High School offers boys the opportunity to compete in the prestigious GPS Athletics competition. The GPS Athletic season is run in the last three weeks of Term 1 and the first two weeks of Term 2. The season culminates in the AAGPS Athletics carnival held at Homebush. Here the nine GPS schools compete against each other in three different age divisions (senior, intermediate and junior). Boys from each Year group represent Sydney Boys High in these divisions. They compete in front of nearly 10,000 spectators. The nature of the GPS Athletics competition is team oriented with a points system designed to reward a good all round performance from a team rather than one strong individual performance. The coaching staff stresses the importance of this aspect of the competition. Athletics at High welcomes all athletes regardless of ability and it is our aim to develop you as an athlete in your discipline. The strength of our team lies in the enthusiasm of all athletes challenging each other for a place to represent the school at the AAGPS Athletics Finals. At the end of last year the winter sport MICs had a meeting to discuss how the athletics season could help to get athletes ready for their winter commitments. It was decided that all athletes in A and B teams are expected to train for athletics on Mondays and during sports afternoons. This is pre-season training for your winter sport commitments. These boys should attend the invitational carnivals on Saturdays and they will gain valuable Award Scheme point for their efforts. There are tremendous benefits to be gained from athletics training; these include physical, mental, social and educational rewards. I hope that you become involved in High Athletics and that it is a rewarding experience in all these ways. Good luck in the up coming season. Please check out Athletics on our Moodle website. Age Champions: The athlete with the most points in any Age Group will be declared the Age Champion. Champion House: The house with the most points will be declared the Champion House. Age Groups: An athlete ceases to be under 14 on the 31st December of the year in which he reaches the age of 14 years. School Team: The school athletics team to compete at the GPS and CHS competition will be selected on the basis of performances at the school carnival, training sessions and the GPS invitational carnivals. Lane Draws: Will be determined by Marshals for all Heats and Heat Finals. Lane draws for Semi-Finals and Finals will be based on times and announced by the Recorders. 100m Heats/Semi/Finals: The fastest 16 competitors will contest the Semi-Finals. The Fastest 8 will progress to the finals. No points will be awarded for places in Heats or Semis – entry points only. 200m Heats/Finals: The fastest 8 will progress to the Finals. No points will be awarded for placing in the Heats. 1500m, 800m, 400m Heat/Finals: These will be conducted as Heat Finals. Where there is more than one heat, placing will be determined on times. Athletes are advised to run these races to the clock as Heat speed may vary. Relays: House relays will be conducted as 4×100m. House captains and vice-captains are asked to organise the house relays well in advance of the scheduled start.
Check out Moodle for the most up to date information on Athletics From the 2012 Athletics CaptainI would like to extend a warm welcome to all boys and parents to the Sydney Boys High AAGPS Athletics Season and athletics handbook. Athletics at High has enjoyed a rich history and holds a prominent position within the school, being one of the most prestigious sports in the GPS sporting competition. In recent years under MIC Mr Robert Devlin and strength and conditioning coaches Jason and Josh Tassell athletics at High has been undergoing somewhat of a revival, with the profile of athletics in the school on the rise and our results at the annual AAGPS Championships in the previous years the best that the school has enjoyed for quite some time. At High athletics is a very team orientated sport, with team performance across the board crucial to earning points at the Championships. The goal of our athletics program is not only to compete and win races at the GPS level, but to encourage involvement in the program and for boys to strive for self-improvement above all else. It must thus be emphasised that athletics at High is not a sport only for the elite or talented, but anyone willing to give it a try and put in their best effort. In fact I myself have personal experience with this particular aspect of the program. Although I had enjoyed some success at athletics, and sprinting in particular, in my junior years, at the beginning of high school I began to lose interest in athletics due to poor performances in the school carnivals. I had lost the fitness and discipline I once had and to my dismay honestly thought that my athletics career was over. However at the end of my third year of high school I decided to give athletics another try and became involved in the program offered by Mr Devlin and the Tassells. Participating in the athletics training, along with entering in the school’s basketball competition, I regained the fitness I once had and at the 2010 School Athletics Carnival stunned everyone when I took out 1st place in six out of the eight events that I competed in. With further training in the weeks during the athletics season I then went on to win the 100m event at the AAGPS Championships for my age-group and was runner up for the 200m for the age group above.
All of this happened not because I was the best athlete in the Year since Year 7, but because I
decided to give the athletics program at High a go and see where it would take me. This is the
best advice that I can give to any boy within the school: just give athletics a chance and
realise your potential. Athletics has much to offer as a sport and can bring tremendous rewards
to all participants including not only physical rewards, but mental, social and educational
benefits as well. I believe that only with sustained and widespread participation coupled with
strong teamwork from the student body can High once again return to her place as one of the most
successful athletic schools within the GPS. The coaches and training programs needed for this to

Boatshed Dinner
Wednesday 29th February 2012 The Rowing Committee invites you to the traditional Boatshed Dinner for all rowers. It is a very special opportunity to celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge staff, coaches and supporters. All crews will be introduced on the stage and there will be speeches by -
All rowers are required to attend and should wear full school uniform. The evening is both a formal introduction of our representative crews for this season and a great opportunity to socialise and show support for the boys in the lead up to the GPS Head of the River and the CHS Championships.
The cost of the dinner is $30 for adults and $30 for students. We look forward to a full house with all boys and their parents attending.
