High Talent
Benjamin Laird (SHS2012) has had his work selected for exhibition at ARTEXPRESS 2013. This year 9,568 students submitted bodies of work at the HSC in Visual Arts, of which 412 were nominated. Congratulations, Benjamin! Well done to our School Captain, Shuming Wang, who has qualified to receive a Black Opal award for more than 150 hours of volunteering. The NSW Premier’s Student Volunteering Awards will be presented next week at a special ceremony. Christopher Chen (Year 10) has been invited by the Australian Informatics Olympiad Committee to attend the AIOC School of Excellence, a 10-day intensive selection school to be held from December 10. After success in the Australian Informatics Competition in May and in the Australian Informatics Olympiad in September, Christopher was selected for the next stage, possible Olympiad representation – a great achievement!

The Governors Centre Project
Thank you to the generous contributors who have helped increase the funds the school holds towards the project by $501,690 this financial year (December 1, 2011 to November 30, 2012). We have had donations from parents from $5,000 as a one-off, to $20 per month in the Monthly Giving Scheme. All your contributions are gratefully received. We now have $1.56 million in term deposits, sequestered for the project. In 2013 we aim to reach out to the wider school community to speed up the fund raising effort. We know that SGHS will reach their fundraising target of $4million ahead of SBHS unless we really ramp up our efforts in 2013-14. At present the projected timeline is: 2013 – Appoint a Project Manager and design team, develop a detailed design and obtain a Development Application; 2014 – establish the full project specifications and costs and continue fundraising; 2015 – complete fundraising, commence the tender process and appoint the builder, award the contract and commence construction; 2016 complete the project. We would appreciate assistance from parents with corporate contacts that might have a ‘fit’ with the project parents with connections to Old Boys who might be approached with a promotions package. Year 7 parents should be inspired by the possibility of their sons using the new facility in Year 12. It would be really good if a higher percentage of parents contributed directly to the Sydney High School Building Fund or signed up, as some members of our own staff have for years, to the Monthly Giving Scheme.

Capital Programs 2012
In addition to saving for the future, the school has also spent $393,876 this year on capital programs. A new bus, financed by the P & C and a new towing vehicle for rowing, comprised half of the $227,806 spent on capital equipment. Furniture renewal ($24,186) and ground improvements ($42,681) were important lines of expenditure to improve the learning environment. Building refurbishment is financed from the SHS Building Fund and general service contributions. This year $99,202 was spent on refurbishing rooms, corridors and public spaces as well as on a significant investment in cabling and network distribution upgrades. A further $146,462 was spent on maintaining the buildings grounds and equipment. It would be of great assistance to us in delivering higher quality educational experiences for all boys if more parents understood and supported in full the general service contribution.

The Sydney Boys High School Public Library Fund
The Fund had income of $118,260 in 2012, consisting of $114,165 in parent donations, $3119 from general service contributions and $975 interest. With 21,852 carried forward, $140,113 was available. The school employs a second Librarian and an additional Library Assistant from the Fund. In addition, supervision for extended library hours in the mornings is paid for, along with the part time Archivist. Wages of $88,000 were applied from the fund and supplemented from general service contributions. In library books, subscriptions, photocopying and equipment, $32,658 was spent. In all, $120,908 was expended from the fund, leaving a balance carried forward of $19,205.

This tax deductible fund is a great way for parents to contribute to the research, study and computer access time that their sons enjoy. It would be very helpful if a higher percentage of parents contributed to this very important educational benefit.

Cartoons and Continental Frankfurts

On Friday, November 30, Year 9 and 10 German went on an excursion to the Goethe Institute (which qualified for the intellectual part of the exercise) and then to a restaurant (brains need food - the other one!).

Together with Ms Cook’s French classes we set off – in the wrong direction – and after having circumnavigated MPE, Perry was heard to ask: Isn’t this where we came from? After that it was plain sailing to Ocean St in Woollahra, the location of the GI. Once upstairs in the Reading Room the work-sheets were greeted with: “Do we have to?” “ Ja!”, “Are one-word answers enough?” “Nein!” The boys quickly gravitated to the colourful cartoons, depicting historical, social and cultural events – and there were no more grumblings about the work-sheets.

Then we got a big surprise: Michael, the major domo of the GI appeared with a large box – which contained “Brezeln” (real German ones – note the size on the picture). These were a huge success with the boys – all of whom I had to remind that we were going to have lunch later on.

By train we went from Edgecliff to Bondi Junction (und wir sind schwarz gefahren!) and walked to “The Heart of Europe” Café. The Frankfurts, Kartoffelsalat, Gulasch und Spätzle and for dessert the Apfelstrudel were delicious – but challenging! Even Sagar eventually gave up after having finished off a couple of desserts of boys with limited capacity. Fortunately nobody suffered any ill effects on the trip back into the city (as above!). The people at the GI as well as the owners of the Café complimented me on the behaviour of “my boys” – and I was very proud of their neat appearance and manners. (And now for the commercial plug – do visit the Café in Bronte Rd – their food and cakes are worth it – just ask Garwerd, Mischa, Adilmorad, Aashray, Carl, Jonathan, Tom, Aaron H., Anes, Kenneth, Ivaylo, Sagar, Perry and Aaron W.)

Blood Donors Wanted

The Australian Red Cross Mobile Blood Service will be accepting blood donations in our gymnasium on Wednesday 12 December from 9am-3pm.  The entire SBHS school community is encouraged to participate – including parents.  Students can sign up for an appointment on the noticeboard outside room 207. EVERYONE needs to help and not leave it to one or two boys. THANK YOU boys for your co-operation! Please remember PRACTICE DAILY, if only for 20 minutes is required for you to develop your awesome musical skills and make your music tutor happy. Practice makes PERFECT!!!!!

‘Lord of the Flies’ Production

Year 10 Drama Presents
'Lord of the Flies'

12/12/12

Year 10 Drama presents to you ‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding and adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams. It will be performed on The Flat, on Wednesday, 12/12/12. The show starts at 7pm, but feel free to come along at 6:30pm to get good seats. It is advisable that you get a few friends together and bring a little picnic, i.e. Food, a blanket, chairs. It’ll be a fun night with friends, and a great way to chill out after school. The cost is a gold coin donation to be paid on the night.

‘Lord of the Flies’ tells the story of a group of young boys stranded on an island after their plane unexpectedly crashed. The main cast reads as follows:

The class has been working very hard, following a strict rehearsal schedule with under a term’s time to get this play up to scratch. Ms Rohr has also put in a great deal of time and effort to make sure everything goes to plan. We were split into groups and assigned specific production roles such as multimedia, costume and publicity. Learning lines was probably the biggest challenge of all, with this being the first production for many of us. Nevertheless it is a lot of fun, and we would love for an audience to experience the final product of our hard work.

We hope we can put on a spectacular show for you.  See you all there!

Technology Term and the Digital Revolution

WORKING WITH THE W DRIVE MEDIA FILES

The Junior Library has had a term of no book processing and concentrating on dealing with some new technologies. The Digital Education Revolution has presented our two libraries with great opportunities to change so that we can adapt to an increasingly challenging digital world for teachers and students.

 STUDENTS CAN NOW ACCESS THE W DRIVE FROM HOME VIA THEIR PORTAL & MY STUDENT FILES.

This year we made a decision to remove all videos from the Library and we have concentrated on adding these resources to the W drive. We have 130 catalogued videos and many uncatalogued ones and we have just developed a strategy for continuing this work on a daily basis next year. Many thanks to David Isaacs for his patience in teaching us how to put DVDs onto the W drive.

This year our Library Monitors worked through the Library’s 5000 OASIS educational websites to find sites no longer working. One of our staff is working half a day a week now disposing of these. Thanks to all those boys for tackling this gargantuan job

High Tide

Sydney Boys High School Sailing

1 December 2012

With the Saturday Fleet racing now finished, attention on Saturday mornings has turned to the Teams Racing on Rose Bay In this type of sailing, teams of three boats and six crew race against each other in rounds called “flights”. Rather than a triangle / sausage / triangle type of course found in fleet racing, teams races are held in identical boats around a series of buoys with the object being to minimise points lost according to final placings. In Teams Racing, it pays to know your rules well.

The conditions did not look inviting, with hardly any wind at all as we left the DBSC. The harbour was like glass with the reflections of the buildings clearly defined until we created a series of distorting waves.

The Sailing Coach, Adam’s choice of a new team led by Tim Pilien, with mainly juniors as crew proved to be the correct call, with the junior’s reduced weight, matching the light weights of some of the juniors in the Scots College Blue Team. The first flight started in only a whisper of wind, when the wind did come up from the NE at about 10 knots, the races were very exciting. Vincent Xu and Angelo Yan in our reserve boat were to sail as the third boat position in the Scots Red Team.

The High team consisting of skippers/crew Tim Pilien/ Dallas Yan, Kai Matsumoto/ Dexter Gordon, Daniel Fang/ Edric Wang and Darren Tiang /Thomas Shortridge were able to win most of their races against Ascham and Scots, except against the Scots Blue Team (which happens to be a very accomplished team).

Kai Matsumoto made some excellent starts and used his voice and helm to effect, enforcing the rules and sailing in a very controlled way, trying traps at marks and pushing opposition boats up into the wind (without collision) to gain advantage for the High team. Tim Pilien sailed well and had a number of interesting starts that show that he is serious about starting on the line on time, but he will need to fine tune his timing a little. Darren Tiang with Thomas Shortridge had difficulties with their jib sail not being on tight enough early on and not pointing up high enough, but they also had a variety of opportunities to enforce the rules on sometimes multiple boats.

Last week the juniors had an excellent sail to Steele Point, Taylor’s Bay, the ‘Hockey Puck’, the Candlestick mark and then around Clarke Island to Port and back to DBSC. It was a good test of the juniors’ sailing ability and their boat handling. The seniors’ Wednesday training was hampered initially by very light conditions, but this was turned to advantage with the opportunity for helming taken up by a number of less experienced skippers in the lighter conditions.

Teams racing will continue to be the focus of this week’s training with both the seniors and the juniors. There may need to be alternative transport for the juniors this Thursday, due to bus availability.

A clarification from last week’s High Tide needs to be corrected. Sydney High crews achieved five out of the top ten places in the Saturday Point Score Series. Fourth place was David Evans, fifth place was Marcus James, seventh place was Daniel Fang, eighth place was Connor Robinson and tenth place was Tim Pilien.

Volunteers are still being called on to help with the Thank You to Leaving Year 12 Parents Catering Event. A couple of Parents to help with the finger food and its preparation as well as a few more boys for waiting at the event in the Hall are needed.

This is a major fund raising event for Sydney High Sailing, adding valuable funds to the Sailing program. During Term 4 the PDHPE faculty has been running a competition to design the student workbook covers for next year. There were many outstanding entries, with honourable mentions going to Kevin Guo, Desmond Ho, Jason Loh and Cameron Ma. Our congratulations and Rebel gift voucher go to Jerry Kwak. We encourage more students to express their artistic talents and enter next year’s competition.

Riverview Gold Cup

Results were mixed for the Riverview Regatta held in Lane Cove in front of the St Ignatius College. The School 1st IV had gear failure and had to limp in with only three rowing, and the Y9 3rd quad had to check for a moored boat and didn’t finish the race. The Y10 Eights have been rowing very well, with the Y10 2nd Eight making the final.

Y9 Quads Development Camp

The camp last Friday night was well attended with guest coaches and speakers. The boys had a Friday afternoon row and were at the sheds ready for the Riverview Regatta on the Saturday morning. The camp was a good introduction to the routine and structure of rowing camps with senior rowers helping. It was also a good introduction to camp duties for the parents, which they found pleasant and rewarding. Thank you to those parents.

• Saturday 15 December – SHS Shed Race. This is our end of year event at the High Sheds. All crews compete in the handicapped ‘Shed Race’ with the finish line in front of our shed. All parents are invited, with a barbecue brunch served for all rowers and families to enjoy under the marquees by the river.

1st Grade
After a strong trial season that resulted in a 3rd place finishing, 1st grade headed into the first rubber of the season against Joeys with high hopes looking to replicate our impressive win over them earlier this term. It was definitely a tough day of tennis for both teams in the hot and humid conditions. The day started off well with High winning 2 of the 3 doubles. Number 1 doubles, Brian and Pat comfortably  dispatched their opponents 6-1 6-2. In the number 2 doubles, Frank and Adam played a tight first set and almost completed a miraculous comeback from 0-5 down in the second set, only to fall short going down 6-7 4-6. Number 3 doubles, Josh and Eddy continued to play well together completing another win, 6-4 6-2. In the singles, Brian demolished his opponent with a ‘double bagel’ scoreline 6-0 6-0. Patrick continued his excellent form this term with another comfortable win 6-0 6-2. In the number 3 singles, Frank was unable to capitalise on good play in the first set to go down in his second consecutive 3 set match 6-4 1-6 3-6. Adam played extremely well in all aspects of his game to win in straight sets 6-2 6-2. In the number 5 singles, Josh was unable to overcome a quality opponent going down 4-6 2-6. Eddy was making quick work of his opponent leading 6-0 2-0, however a lapse of concentration and momentum in the match ultimately cost him the match in 3 sets, 6-0 2-6 2-6. The final result, High luckily walking away with the 3 bonus point s with the scoreline 8 matches to 4.  Despite the win, it was a disappointment for the boys as we were unable to replicate a much better performance shown in the trial rubber against Joeys. The boys will now turn their attention to holiday training sessions and the Australian Open camp in order to prepare for the fixtures starting early in term 1.

2nd Grade
Second grade headed to Joeys for the first match of the GPS season. In very hot and humid conditions, High played disappointingly and were unable to improve on our trial season results. The number one doubles of Carl and Ian had a strong start but inconsistent serving and lack of pressure at the net cost the first and second sets. Number two doubles of Richard and Ryo played a strong pair of opponents but handed too many free points, going down 2-6 1-6. Number three doubles of Calvin and James were outclassed by their opponents, losing 2-6 0-6. In the singles, Carl played well against his opponent after a weak start, the second set a tight affair which he narrowly lost 4-6. Richard performed strongly in his match but was unable to finish off points, going down 3-6 2-6. Ian was unable to put pressure on his tired opponent in the first set and played inconsistently in the second, losing 3-6 2-6. Calvin started off well and pushed his opponent in the first, but lost the intensity in the second, going down 4-6 1-6. Ryo performed very well despite his fatigue, playing two very close sets and was unlucky to lose them both 4-6. James struggled against his solid opponent, going down 1-6 1-6. After our disappointing performance, the team will be working hard through the holidays to prepare for our next rubber.

3rd & 4th Grade
After a successful trial season, we headed into the first game of the GPS season against a strong St Joseph’s side with high hopes. However, the erratic weather was not on our side, with the matches starting well after the scheduled time due to the rain. 3rds were overmatched in the doubles, despite consistent hitting and a great display of High Spirit, with the Dominic-James pair going down in a tight 4-6 match. The singles gave us more promising results, with both Andrew Cheung and Edward Zhang playing strong tennis after being behind, despite not sealing victories in 3-6 and 4-6 losses respectively. 4th grade maintained their undefeated streak into the GPS season, with both doubles winning 6-4 in convincing style. They carried their momentum into the singles with numerous closely contested matches. However, it was William Wu who was on top with a dominant 6-3 victory. Well done, boys. Keep up the great work!

5th & 6th Grade
Tennis at St Joseph’s last Saturday was an incredible challenge for all of our players, facing an average of 30-degree heat and very high humidity for the duration of the day. Starting earlier than usual, 5ths and 6ths had the comfort of cloud cover to begin with, albeit still with high humidity, but as the day progressed and it got closer to midday the clouds disappeared and the sun was brutal. As a result, many of the 5ths and 6ths games were lost, but with a few exceptions, including myself and Julian Tang- who replaced Jason Garrett in 6ths for the day due to an injury - and won 6-1. Playing doubles and singles back to back for almost two hours; by the end of my matches I was completely exhausted. My energy in the last few games was at its lowest, with both myself and my opponent only managing to loop it back to the other side. Had we had the energy, a single well-placed shot with enough power would have won the game significantly earlier, but as it was it ended in victory for me at 6-4, and a very long match. 

16s
In hot and humid weather, the 16s tennis team hosted Saint Joseph’s College for the first round of the 2013 AAGPS tennis season. We were anticipating a good start to the day with dominating doubles performances. Unfortunately, this proved not to be the case with none of the doubles in the As being won. However, as we progressed into the singles matches, the team found something special to win three of the four matches, all in very impressive styles. A1 showed exceptional skill to come back from 5-2 down and win the set 6-5 (8-6). Overall, the As drew three sets all with Saint Joseph’s. Hopefully, we can take all of our trial experience into term 1 of 2013.

P&C Thank You Party

This year’s P&C Thank You Party will be held in the Great Hall on Monday 17 December at 6:30pm to 9:00pm.

There are a large number of parents and staff at High who contribute in a multitude of ways to the school throughout the year. The P&C would like to acknowledge these invaluable contributions and the P&C Thank You Party is one way we can do this.  We would ask anyone in the school family that has helped out in any way this year (whether at a Parking event, Open Day, Orientation Day, manning the barbecue or the door, helping at the canteen, catering and cleaning up or one of the myriad other ways which keep the ship afloat) to come along and share a light supper, refreshments, some pleasant conversation, and let us say “thank you” to you and your partners.
