Music NotesMarching BandMarching Band is on Tuesday after school 3:30pm and Friday Mornings 8am. There will be a meeting in Room 201 this Friday (1st half of lunch). All boys in the Marching Band, STAGE and CONCERT BANDS are to attend this meeting. Award Scheme PointsThe 2012 Award scheme closes on Friday 30TH of November. If there are missing entries, please come to the music staff room. Boys who do not attend Marching Band Rehearsals will not get their points for 2013. There are NO EXCUSES for not attending or arriving late to ensemble rehearsals. ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM. (unless stated otherwise). Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% of ATTENDANCE is required. PLEASE REMEMBER to pack up after rehearsals (tidy up the room/and stands back on rack). EVERYONE needs to help and not leave it to one or two boys. THANK YOU boys for your co-operation! Amnesty International ConferenceReport on the Amnesty International conference at Redfern Community CentreFriday the 19th of October found a small group of Year Ten students from Sydney Boys High School headed to a seminar by Amnesty International to better their understanding of, and position to take action against, human rights abuses throughout the world. For those who don’t know, Amnesty International is a Non-government, Not-For-Profit organisation with over three million members worldwide, whose focus is "to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated". Amnesty was founded in 1961 after the publication of a letter headed “The Forgotten Prisoners” by Peter Benenson in ‘The Observer' and since has campaigned tirelessly against human rights abuses, receiving both the Nobel Peace Prize and the United Nations Prize In The Field Of Human Rights. Upon arrival we were treated to a lecture by several members of Amnesty International on the topics of what Amnesty is, what they are doing throughout the world and their campaigns against human rights abuses, as well as the abuses that we would be taking ‘actions’ against that day. Shortly after this, we were split into groups to take action against various abuses, the first of which was the “Free Pussy Riot” campaign. Pussy Riot is a feminist, Russian, punk-rock band that was recently imprisoned for singing 'Virgin Mary, redeem us of Putin’ in Christ the Saviour Cathedral on 21st February 2012. The ‘action’ that we undertook was standing together holding ‘Pussy Riot’ masks over our faces all bearing the slogan “Free Pussy Riot” which would then be compiled with other photos, as well as letters and emails, that have, and will be, sent in by numerous people throughout the world to be then sent to the Russian Ambassador in support of the band’s freedom. The rest of the day was spent similarly, completing actions including: letter writing for the protection of indigenous peoples in the Niger Delta, whose land had been affected by oil spills, creating video messages in support of Girifna (a peaceful student-led activist movement being oppressed in the Sudan), learning about Malala Yousufzai, a fourteen year old girl who was shot in the head for speaking out against laws forbidding women from attending school, and sending messages to the Prime Minister of Pakistan in relation to her plight, following the tale of an Afghani asylum seeker and the perils he faced in his journey to Australia as well as the treatment he received upon arrival here, and sending letters to our local Members of Parliament asking them for information about, and to take action on, the current plans to send asylum seekers to Nauru. The day was greatly enlightening, allowing us some insight into some of the less observable human rights abuses that have been occurring throughout the world, and how we can take action against, and raise awareness about, such issues and encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, it allowed us to get a sense of the extent to which such abuses were occurring and how free we are, living in a country where you can speak your mind about politicians and political parties, and have a voice when it comes to oppression and human rights violations in society and the country as a whole.

HPV Vaccination for BoysHPV vaccination for boys to commence in NSWBoys in NSW high schools will be offered human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination from 2013 to provide protection against developing infections that can lead to cancer. In 2013, the 3-dose course of vaccine will be offered to:
HPV vaccination has been offered to female students in Year 7 since 2007. In 2011, 81% of Year 7 girls received at least one dose of the three-dose course of HPV vaccine. HPV is the name given to a group of viruses that affect both females and males. Most people who are sexually active will have a genital HPV infection at some time in their lives. HPV infection usually causes no symptoms and goes away by itself. However, in rare cases infection can cause life-threatening cancers. Almost all cases of cervical cancer and genital warts are due to HPV infection. HPV also causes cancers in other parts of the body, including the vulva, vagina, penis and anus. The vaccine is highly effective in preventing the main types of HPV infection and is most effective when it is given to people before they are exposed to the virus. The vaccine is registered for use from 10 years of age and is only provided free for male students who commence the course in Year 7 or Year 9. Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents in early 2013. To consent to vaccination, parents are advised to read all the information provided, complete the Consent Form and return it to their child’s school. Students in Year 7 will also be offered vaccination against other diseases, including diphtheria-tetanus-whooping cough (dTpa), hepatitis B and varicella (chicken pox). President: Ian Sweeting President’s ReportThis year, despite a number of challenges, the P&C has continued to provide a high level of support to Sydney Boys High School and its students. One of these challenges, common to P&Cs generally, is the necessary renewal of positions on the executive as parents come to the end of their time at the school. Consequently, this year (as will the next) is a period where the knowledge required to operate within the complexities of the school environment is transferred to the incoming parents on the committee. Notwithstanding this, I believe the committee has this year achieved a significant number of positive outcomes which include:
The above outcomes would not be possible without the commitment to the school and school life displayed by so many of our parents. In particular, we owe a debt of gratitude to the parents on the P&C executive who give up so much of their valuable time to be involved. Thank you to Geoff Andrews and Jason Chen (Vice Presidents), Anne Wall (Secretary) Richard James (Treasurer) and Julie Connolly (Assistant Treasurer) for their work this year. Nan Chen (BNO Coordinator), Sachiyo James and Nina Liu (P&C Catering) were everywhere in 2012, from the Welcome Day to Orientation Day and everything in between. Usha Arvind has taken on the Student Wellbeing Representative role with enthusiasm. Jason Chen has again coordinated the Parent Mentor Program with little fuss. Thank you to you all. This year the P&C says goodbye to a number of active and generous parents as their sons finish their time at High. Jeanette Brokman, Debbie Dukes and Karen Chiam have made significant contributions in a number of capacities both within and outside of the P&C over the years and we thank them for their time and generosity. We trust that you will enjoy life after High. This year sees the retirement of Julie Connolly, Geoff Andrews and Richard James from their most significant roles on the P&C. The commitment of enormous amounts of their time and energy to the school over many years, both within and outside the P&C, reflects their altruism and sense of service. The school and P&C were fortunate indeed to be in receipt of their contributions. The significant amounts of money noted in the reports and raised in support of the school is a result of our parents’ generosity, whether through parking duties, volunteering for various fund raising activities, donating their efforts to the BNO, through parent contributions or their work in the canteen. Special thanks must go to the Canteen Sub-committee, led by Sharon Hughes, who together with the permanent Canteen staff and our large group of parent volunteers has provided some $70,000 in disbursements for school projects in 2012. The canteen staff and volunteers radiate warmth, energy and enthusiasm and are a significant resource for the school. As well as a fundraising role, the P&C provides an important link between the parents and the school through its participation in a number of High governance bodies. This year, the P&C was represented on the 探花视频 Foundation by Geoff Andrews as Chairman and Julie Connolly as Secretary. The Foundation carries out the important function of managing and generating revenue from assets including the Tennis Courts, Outterside Centre, Fairland Pavilion, and the High Store as well as administering Great Hall and COLA bookings. Thank you to both for their contributions to the business of the Foundation. Thank you to Julie Connolly, Jeanette Brokman, and Deborah Dukes who represented the P&C at School Council meetings. At Council, the P&C representation provides an important role of offering a parent and community perspective on School policies. The P&C was also represented on the Sports Council taking a leading role in supporting the changes to the school sports programs. Thanks are due to Anne Wall, Julie Connolly and Geoff Andrews for their efforts. During the year, the parent community also participated on selection panels for the appointment of teaching positions within the School. A large number of parents have given their time for both the selection panels and the associated training. Thank you. Ultimately, all elements of the school family are committed to the one goal of providing a high quality, academically challenging and enriching educational experience to the students at Sydney Boys High. Consequently, there is in evidence a high level of respect and co-operation between the P&C and the School Executive and Staff, the School Council, the SHS Foundation, and the SHS Old Boys Union. We would like to thank all of these individuals and organisations for their positive engagement with the P&C throughout this last year and we look forward to a productive 2013. Finally, on behalf of the P&C, I would like to offer our thanks to Dr Jaggar for his commitment to the school and his ongoing support of the P&C throughout 2012. P&C Thank You PartyA reminder that this year’s P&C Thank You Party will be held in the Great Hall on Monday 17 December at 6:30pm to 9:00pm. There are a large number of parents and staff at High who contribute in a multitude of ways to the school throughout the year. The P&C would like to acknowledge these invaluable contributions and the P&C Thank You Party is one we can do this. We would ask anyone in the school family that has helped out in any way this year (whether at a Parking event, Open Day, Orientation Day, manning the barbecue or the door, helping at the canteen, catering and cleaning up or one of the myriad other ways which keep the ship afloat) to come along and share a light supper, refreshments, some pleasant conversation, and let us say “thank you” to you and your partners. Sydney Boys High TennisHigh vs Shore1st Grade
In the final match of the trial season, High headed out to Tennis World to face a strong Shore
outfit, boosted by the return of their number 1 player who had been out for six months due to
injury. The boys were looking to end the trial season on a high note after numerous strong
performances going into this matchup. It was a tough start for us in the doubles, with our new
doubles combinations in trial resulting in only 1 win out of the 3 close doubles matches. With
Brian unavailable, number 1 doubles combination of Pat and Carl played a good match first time
together to go down in a close one 4-6 5-7. New number 2 doubles pairing of Frank and Adam showed
encouraging signs to take out the first set, however fell short in the super tiebreaker going
down 6-4 4-6 6-10. New number 3 combo of Josh and Eddy went the distance to come back from 0-5 in
the super tiebreaker to clinch the match in 3 sets, 7-5 4-6 10-7. In the singles, Pat was able to
grind it out to overcome his out of form opponent 1-6 6-4 6-4. In the number 2 singles, Frank
played well in patches; however fell short in his second 3 setter of the day, 2-6 6-2 3-6. Adam
fought hard to save multiple match points; however he also went down in his second 3 setter of
the day, 3-6 7-6 4-6. In the number 4 singles, Josh played a controlled match to edge his
opponent in straight sets 6-4 6-3. Carl showed glimpses of brilliance in his debut in 1st grade
however was unlucky in the end, going down 1-6 1-6. Unfortunately, Eddy ran out of time to
complete his match as a result of the lengthy five 3 set matches that only saw him take to the
court with a little over an hour to play his match, resulting in a draw 4-6 2-3. The final result
in the tight contest that featured five 3 set matches saw High falling just short to Shore in the
final match of the trial season with the final score 5.5 matches to 3.5 matches. After an
excellent trial season that saw only narrow losses to Newington and Shore, the boys will be
looking to regroup for this week in our home season opener against Joeys. For more info check out the tennis website at:

SHS RowingSt Joseph’s Regatta ResultsFor the second year, Joeys hosted their GPS regatta at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. With the travel to Penrith and boats to rig, de-rig and load on the trailer, it meant an early start and a later finish, but coaches and rowers got involved with good spirit and camaraderie. It was terrific to see 100% attendance by the Y9 quads and Y10 eights.

Scoring This week had HIGH 1st Grade up against Shore, with the injured Geoff Gerlach recovering and starting in his first game this season with a massive 26 rebounds. This is a crazy statistic and this effort led High to an 11 point victory to place them at 4th-6th on the table. If they beat Joeys next week, then there would be potential that 1st Grade would once again regain 4th position on the 1st Grade ladder. (Which is their term 4 goal) JUNIORS: MAKE SURE YOU COME AND SUPPORT 1ST GRADE FOR THEIR LAST HOME GAME OF THE YEAR. 1st Grade needs everyone’s support.

Sailing: High TideSydney Boys High School Sailing24 November 2012 The final round of the Saturday Sailing Series was sailed on Rose Bay in again very light and shifty winds of around 7-9 knots from the N, turning to the NE and shifting back to the E at times. The two races held were to decide the final places in the competition and High sailors were competing for podium and top ten finishes in the final races in the series. After the points were counted, High sailors were placed 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th in the competition’s final top ten places. This was a very consistent result with David Evans, a previous winner of the championship, sailing well to fill a top ten finish to the year of Fleet racing. Marcus James and Dallas Yan were sailing well, only to be beaten into fifth place in a tight finish at the end of the series. Connor Robinson and his crew sailed consistently and intelligently to also finish in the top ten places with a creditable sixth place in the series. Tim Pilien continued to improve his boat handling and his starts to the races. His good finishes this week have improved his overall standings in the series and gained him a deserving eighth place. Daniel Fang, Tiger Zhang, Darren Tiang and crews both had good second races and finished respectably in the middle of the fleet. Hayden Rabone and Vincent Xu and crews both improved their positions with favourable places in the last two races. Both sailed consistently again and they seem to be gaining more confidence and enthusiasm as each week of the regatta progresses The presentation at the Woollahra Sailing Club was well represented with all high sailors present. With their boats secured on Rose Bay Beach, the boys were treated to a barbecue and a raffle of sailing goods. Thanks to Sydney High Old Boy Malcolm Maiden, who was the Officer of the Day for the term on the start boat (at left) and Richard James ( our ex-Parents Committee President) for helping out with the places and flags. The SBHS Sailing Committee AGM was held at the DBSC sheds and it was encouraging to see parents enthusiastically filling all positions on the committee. The remaining weeks of sailing will concentrate on Teams Racing and putting both a senior and a junior Teams Racing Team up against Scots and Ascham in Rose Bay on Saturday.
