From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications. Cash Register WindowPlease ensure that all students have the correct money when making cash payments at the register. Remember payments can be made before school, recess and lunchtime. Thank you for your cooperation. First AidNotice to All Parents It is a parent responsibility to notify the Front Office First Aid Staff if your son has a medical condition which requires medication. All medication such as Epipen’s need to be clearly marked with your son’s name and have a current expiry date. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Music NotesSunday ConcertA concert will be held on Sunday 18th of November for all ensembles from 3pm-6:30pm. Jazz bands will perform on the Courtyard followed by Stage Bands and string ensembles in the Great Hall. All staff, students and parents are welcome. Bring a plate, blanket and drinks to this casual concert and listen to their final concert for the year!!! SYOThe Sydney Youth Orchestra (SYO) is now looking for young string players. If you are interested, please come to the music department more details. Marching BandThe Marching Band will resume as of WEEK 6, on TUESDAY and FRIDAY AFTERNOONS, after school. Ensemble RehearsalsPlease check the timetable and arrive ON TIME! There are NO EXCUSES for not attending or arriving late to ensemble rehearsals. ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM. (unless stated otherwise). Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% ATTENDANCE is required. PLEASE REMEMBER to pack up after rehearsals (tidy up the room/and stands back on rack). EVERYONE needs to help and not leave it to one or two boys. THANK YOU boys for your co-operation! Please remember PRACTICE DAILY, if only for 20 minutes is required for you to develop your awesome musical skills and make your music tutor happy. Practice makes PERFECT!!!!! SBHS DebatingMIC ReportWell I expect everyone thinks that because coaching finishes at the end of Term 2 there is no not much happening on the debating front in term 4. This could not be further from the truth we have been very busy during the last five weeks. The first important announcement is the debaters of the Year for 2012
Year 7 Akeedh Razmi The second important announcement is our new Debating Prefect for next year is Khushaal Vyas. I am looking forward to working with Khushaal, but also will be sad to say goodbye to Christopher who has been a superbly passionate Debating Prefect and has not only ably assisted me over the last year, but has also pushed through a number of new initiatives such as the Debating Club and the show Debate in term 1. We are lucky that Christopher and four of the other Year 12s are keen to come back to coach at High next year. We were really pleased to see that our Year 10 team made it through to the PDC Year 10 Grand Final and it was awarded to the opposing team on a split decision over a very minor point within the whole debate. So a very close call, but unfortunately Lokesh, Peter, Stephen and John were unable to bring the Teasdale Cup to High. Meanwhile we have established a Years 7 and 8 House Debating Competition which will run on Fridays. Thanks to all the Year 10s and Year 11s who have offered to adjudicate these debates. I will announce the winners in the final High Notes this term. In addition we have four Year 8s coming along with me to the Janine Best Debating Competition at Hurlstone Agricultural School. With some better navigation skills (to get there in time!) and a knowledge of the topics beforehand we are hoping for a little but more success this year!
Some of you will be considering your future in debating next year. It is important for you to
think what you got out of the program this year before you commit to continuing. You have to
commit to a lot of hours after school, on Fridays and so you have to feel that the benefits are
worth it. Next year we will be trying a new system from the beginning of the year as we will be
organising our groups according to interests and abilities. So if you only want to come to
debating to learn some skills, play some debating games etc that is fine ( as long as you are
always well behaved) and we will put you in a separate class to those students who know that they
want to take part in competitive debating. So have a good think about this as I will be
asking for this information at the very start of next year.

Orientation DayMany thanks to the students who participated in Orientation Day and helped our 2013 students and families feel welcome. It was great to see both junior & senior students become involved. The school tours were popular again this year and our tour guides did a wonderful job. I would especially like to thank the senior students who assisted our Administrative Staff in and around the Common Room. Your help was invaluable and allowed us to move through the enrolment process as quickly as possible. Thank you for doing such a fantastic job. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Mr Con Barris, Ms Julie Eggleton, Ms Annalise Mack, Mr Mick Aldous, our Program Managers & MICs for organising the students and activities. Thank you also to the staff & students who assisted with the set up for the day’s events and to our P&C parents who provided refreshments throughout the afternoon for our new families.

AAGPS First Grade Table
This week against Riverview was one of the tougher games for High, although most of the Opens teams and the 16s age group managed to pull through especially strong to claim some very good wins for High. It is also worth noting that the 14Bs and Cs teams tied in regular time. A very promising outlook for High’s younger generations. Keep it up! For 1st and 2nd Grade, this week’s performance has been none other than some of the very best basketball this season so far. 1st Grade managed to keep up with the HUGE Ignatius team the whole game, losing with a less than 10-point margin. For 2nd Grade High still remains strong at first in the table, with 5 wins and 0 losses. MR B HAYMAN’S TEAM OF THE WEEK!- SUPERSTARS OF 2ND GRADE An amazing display of skill and teamwork was on show by our side last Saturday as they defeated St. Ignatius in the top of the table clash at second grade level. Point guard, Bailey Musulin (personally undefeated at SBHS) and Stefan Bell (19 rebounds, 100% shooting in the game) were the outstanding players on the day. In my opinion, the whole team is performing well under the experienced guidance of coach, Mr A Hayman. As a school we need to work on our boxing out for rebounds and transition defence across all grades. Often we participate against longer, more athletic somatotypes who can more naturally rebound and run. Skill development in these areas at training under game realistic circumstance is vital if you don’t have the luxury of a Stefan Bell on the boards! 1st Grade Player Profile
Name: Nathan Sutton Why you started basketball: I started because my brother Josh had started a few years before and it looked like a lot of fun. My parents also played at reasonably high levels, with my dad playing a lot in America and my mum being on the state team when she was younger. Basketball also a very good way to keep me fit. Most appreciated value of High basketball tradition: It is definitely the passion involved in it. I’ve been around some of the best players the school's ever had and just seeing the passion they have for representing the school and wanting to try their best is an inspiration. Favourite basketball move: People who have seen me play will know that I love a running pass fake on a drive. It’s kind of my go-to move to get past a help defender

High TideSydney Boys High School Sailing10 November 2012 Rounds Four and Five of the Saturday Points score Term 4 Series were sailed on Double Bay and Rose Bay in two very different conditions. Round Four (Sydney High’s own regatta) was sailed in very light and shifty winds whilst Round Five had plenty of wind, about 12-16 knots from the SW to S to SE to S constantly shifting. Sydney High sailors achieved mixed results in both these races. High sailors gained a 5th, 7th and a 9th place in this regatta. David Evans and his crew sailed the most consistently this week with a 6th and a 7th placing in the two races held. Tim Pilien sailed well with Steven Chung and Patrick Han to respectable places of 13th and 10th placing in fleets of over thirty boats and good placings were achieved by Marcus (6th in the first race), Darren Tiang (12th) and Connor Robinson (11th). Hayden Rabone sailed competitively for his first race on the helm and better results are anticipated from him in future regattas. Race 1 was a challenging race with a shifty wind gusting over 15 knots and considerable wind chop. There were a couple of capsizes and some good individual sailing performances, but Sydney High lacked the consistency and starting ability of the Cranbrook machine in these conditions, who occupied the first 3-4 positions at most marks. Sydney High, Ascham and Scots were blown out of the water. Race 2 had some better Sydney High starts with Connor Robinson and David Evans on opposite sides of the course, both doing the right thing, by covering the leading Cranbrook sailors and seeking advantage of the numerous wind shifts. Other High sailors were less impressive with sailors not using the rules and calling “starboard” on other schools and then doing so on teammates. This sort of action is counterproductive to the team and High sailors will have to make more of an effort to perform as a team in future. Even with a couple of poor seamanship decisions being made on the course, some good sailing was observed this week. Vincent Xu impressed with a solid start to his Saturday racing as a skipper. Vincent has shown promise on the training days and has now stepped up. Angelo Yan now knows to check that his boat does not have water in the bow, otherwise it will be difficult to control the boat. Sailors are reminded that as part of their instruction it is the skipper’s responsibility for the proper rigging of their boats. Any problems on the course are extremely difficult to correct on the water, before a race. A reminder that the Sailing AGM is on the 24th November 2012 at DBSC sheds at 8.30 am. All welcome.
