High Notes, Vol 13 No 35, November 09 2012

From the Principal
High Talent
Congratulations to Mendel Liang (Year 11) who was selected for
the Kizuna Exchange Program. He was successful among 600 applicants vying for a two-week exchange
in Japan in December. Year 11 boys collected $6644.10 for the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler
Foundation last Friday. In the circumstances, given the rescheduling and lack of publicity, the
day was successful. The Community Services Committee reports that the total funds raised by our
students so far this year is $118,811. With a couple of events to go, this could be the record
year for raising money for good causes. I am very proud of the character of the students of this
school as evidenced by their expanded willingness to give of their time to help others. Well done
to the boys who were engaged in the Language Perfect competition. They answered over 1.2
million questions and spent nearly 5,000 hours in the contest. Over 75% of language students
answered 500 questions or more. Well done, boys! A great recovery by the first XI cricket
team last Wednesday led to a nail biting victory over Heathcote High in the Davidson Shield
Knockout. The boys showed character to hold on and chase down 192 runs for a well-earned victory.
Good job, boys!
Big Brother Visits
Year 9 boys are currently in a program of visits to
their former primary schools. Sixty students are scheduled to visit 18 schools. William Chow,
Eric Le, Andrew Lu, Thomas Nassif, Anthony Taing, Bosco Tran, Madison Wu and Bill Zhuang visited
Georges Hall PS to bring back their experiences of High to the next generation of potential High
boys. Timothy Tran and Chen Yu Weng went back to Belmore South for their visit. Boris Amromin,
Bennette Jiang and Shayan Vatandoust headed off to Neutral bay PS and Stephen Ngo and Stanley Si
to Bankstown PS. These visits are good for the community profile of our school. Thank you to the
boys involved in the program for giving up their time. Feedback in the past demonstrates that the
primary schools really enjoy the visits and both the primary school students and our ambassadors
learn something in the process.
Year 11 Reports
Negative consequences are now being applied to all boys who
have not discussed their reports with the Principal. Parents are again requested to insist that
their sons comply with school policy and make appointments to discuss their progress with the
Principal.
Year 12 Portfolios
Year 12 students have completed their HSC examinations
and are now presenting their Clearance Forms for signing so that they can pick up their Student
Portfolios. Some students have supplementary documentation for submission to universities. It
would be helpful to them to collect their portfolios before heading off on holiday celebrations.
Behaviour on buses and trains
Parents are requested to remind their sons
that their dress, demeanour and language are all monitored by members of the public travelling on
buses and trains. They find it very easy to use their phones to let me know if boys are not
behaving as well as they consider High boys should. I receive a handful of emails from commuters
each year, not many of them complimentary. Boys need to maintain standards of behaviour while
travelling on public transport at the taxpayers’ expense. Seats must be given up for adults
and stairs must be kept free of boys blocking entrance and exit by paying commuters. Let’s
not forget that there are high expectations associated with attendance at High.

Theatre Society 2013
Come and join the Sydney Boys High School Theatre Society and see a bunch of shows at Sydney
Theatre Company next year.
Membership is now open for any student in Year 10-12, and limited to 30
students!
As a member of this group, you will be attending six plays at the Sydney Theatre
Company
Why become a member?
All students need to study plays as part of their English HSC coursework, and this is a great way
to come to understand theatre forms and conventions, as well as how directors interpret, adapt
and bring to life a playwright’s text into that of a realised production. As a member of
the Theatre Society, you will see a collection of plays in a variety of theatres, in a range of
genres and performance styles – a perfect supplement to your English and Drama studies.
To become a member, there is an annual registration fee of $15, along with the theatre
subscription price of $190.00 (great value for six plays!)
The plays for next year are:

SBHS PRODUCING BOYS WHO LEAD IN SUPPORTING CAUSES?
Last year’s
Library Prefect, Tim Chan, has always been his own man in the fantastic assistance he gave to
Library publicity over the 6 years he volunteered to work in our Junior Library. Tim
invented the Library VIP system which we still use. Tim came up with the idea of
disseminating information about changes via specially produced Book Marks and so on.
Tim was also a keen reader. Tim left school last year and has since been in touch with the
Library about a Website he decided to produce called Love2Read which supports the Year of
Reading. We have asked Tim if he would like to use his website this year to publish our
Year 7&8 Literacy Circles Book Recommendations. The link for Tim’s Website is
Tim will publish our boys work in his blog:
EXTRAORDINARILY GENEROUS LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS.
Our Library would like to
recognise Darren Huang, Year 7, who is one of the most efficient and hard- working Library
Monitors we have ever seen. Darren has already volunteered for 60 hours work in our Library
this year and is on his way to 66 hours. James Chee, Year 9, has also been amazingly
helpful with 24 hours of voluntary work for our Library. When James was in Year 7 he also
assisted us to an extraordinary degree.
AWARD SCHEME POINTS
Library staff have now updated all due points.
Students who would like to complete 6 hours are reminded to act soon. We will continue to
update points. Unfinished points will be taken over to next year.
DONATIONS GRATEFULLY RECEIVED

Orientation Day - Help Needed 4:30pm-6:00pm
Sachiyo James is arranging the refreshments for Orientation Day being held on Tuesday 13
November. Sachiyo is looking for volunteers to serve refreshments between 4pm and
6:30pm. This is one of the first opportunities for new parents to be introduced to the
school family, and as such, a strong turn-out of volunteers should result in a positive
experience and encourage future participation in school life.

This week against Grammar was one of the biggest wins for High this season. Although a few games
had been rained out, out of all the games played - High won 16 out of 20. High
1st and 2nd Grade teams protected our home court advantage, and with a great turnout from High
boys and their parents our 1st Grade demolished Grammar 95 – 38, a nearly 60 point
advantage. Since the jump ball 1st Grade came out strong and never looked back, with the power
forwards Kenny Kuang and Michael Chang dominating the rebounds, while centre Jack Hutchinson
hustled inside to convert many scoring opportunities. MVP of the game Mitchell managed to knock
down 24 points of 3’s and drives through skilful uses of screens, open spaces and
great ball rotation by the team. Guards James and Nate also contributed greatly to the scoring
tally. This win against Grammar is a huge win for 1st Grade and as a result raised the team to
4th position on the AAGPS 1st Grade table, the position that our school wish to maintain, if not
get even higher, during the season. Our 2nd Grade side still remain undefeated, and is once again
led in scoring by Bailey Musulin as per previous weeks at 20 points. Although the 2nd Grade team
had not so good a start as they would have liked, High still managed to maintain the lead since
the beginning of the game and managed to hold on in the dying seconds of the 4th. The rest of the
Opens team also managed to pull off with a win, and it was also especially encouraging to see the
lower age groups winning most of the games that they have been given the opportunity to
play.
A new addition to Shootin’ Hoops suggested by Mr B Hayman starting next week is to
potentially include a player profile of one 1st Grade members each week. Starting next week we
will be interviewing Nathan Sutton, the starting ball-handler of the team, so stay tuned!
This Saturday will be an AWAY game at Riverview. As we do not have a home-court advantage
anymore, we need more than ever the support of the players and parents this week to pull 1st
Grade over the line. St. Ignatius School defeated Joeys and we lost to Joeys- should be a good
game. Good luck to all players playing this weekend, and do not forget to support our 1st and 2nd
Grade team this week at Riverview!

1st Grade
The boys were well prepared for our match against grammar,
although we would certainly miss our captain Frank, and one of our strongest team members Brian.
The new pairing of Eddy and Pat combined well to overcome the number 1 grammar team in a close 2
sets 6-4 7-6. Adam and Josh kept up their solid form to win in straight sets 6-4 6-1. Richard and
Carl, filling in from second grade, fought hard but were unable to come up with the win losing in
straight sets 1-6 2-6. With a 2-1 lead from the doubles the day was looking promising. Patrick
played an outstanding match, making few errors, giving his opponent only 2 games 6-2 6-0. Josh
fought hard in a tough first set, losing in a tiebreak, and was unable to regain form for the
second set 6-7 1-6. Adam played a solid, consistent match, showing his great foot speed and
agility 6-4 6-3. Eddy was too powerful for his opponent in the end prevailing in straight sets
6-4 6-3. Richard had a tough battle, keeping close with his opponent in both sets, but was unable
to get on top 3-6 4-6. Carl played a strong, aggressive match, breaking his opponent down, and
finishing the match in style 6-1 6-2. The boys were thrilled to have beaten their long-time
rivals, and are eager for their next trial game against St Ignatius. Good luck boys.
Patrick Rynsaardt
2nd Grade
This week, High played at home against a strong Grammar team. The
number one doubles of Ian and Calvin had a disappointing start, playing inconsistently and unable
to put pressure on their opponents, losing 1-6 3-6. The number two doubles of Ryo and James Lian
won a tough first set but let go of the second. In the tie-breaker they were narrowly edged out
7-10. The third doubles pairing of Bohan and James Chee were unable to gain momentum and lost 1-6
1-6. In the singles, Ian lost a tough first set but had an error-prone second, going down 3-6
1-6. Calvin put pressure on his opponent in the first but unforced errors handed the opponent the
second, 3-6 1-6. After a tight first set, Ryo became more inconsistent in the second and let the
match slip 5-7 2-6. Bohan had a tough match against his opponent who proved too good, going down
1-6 0-6. James Chee came out strong against his opponent who in return stepped up his game, the
match going 4-6 0-6. James Lian debuted for 2nds and performed very well, his 5-7 3-6 loss
providing valuable experience. On the whole, the day was disappointing as we were unable to be
consistent throughout our matches. The team will be training very hard for our next rubber
against Ignatius.

3rd-6th Grade Tennis Match Report
Last Saturday, our team faced Sydney
Grammar. We managed to win in all four grades for a second time. 3rd Grade started off strong
with wins in both doubles matches very quickly with the opposition fielding only a single doubles
pair. Singles was very close with the exception of a stunning victory by Edward Zhang winning
6-0. 4th Grade’s doubles performance was mixed with a win for only the 1st doubles pair in
spectacular fashion by 6-1. Singles however were all wins with only one narrow loss. 5th grade
was a mixed bag with a very close score but it was Grammar, who only fielded one doubles pair
again, that lost. 6th grade put on a spectacular performance with the boys winning 6 matches to
nil. Both doubles were forfeited by Grammar and the singles were won 6-0 by William Du 6-1 by
Aaron Hasan and Gordon Qian and 6-2 by Jason Garrett. Fabulous work boys! I would like to see a
repeat of this kind of performance in the future.
Edward Zhang
6th Grade Tennis Report
On the weekend Sydney High’s 6th grade
tennis team played off against Sydney Grammar in a crushing string of games. Due to the absence
of a few players, Sydney Grammar had to forfeit doubles, giving both wins to High by default.
However in singles Grammar was swept away with devastating wins from all four of High’s 6th
grade tennis players. 6th1 Jason Garrett swiftly defeated his opponent 6-2 while 6th2 Aaron
Hassan overcame his opponent with ease 6-1. 6th3 William Du even managed to dominate his set in
straight games and 6th4 Gordon Qi also crushed his opponent 6-1, giving all six sets of the day
to High.

16 A’s and B’s Tennis report
The 16 A’s and B’s had
a very tough game last week against our strong opponents from the Grammar school. Our 3rd week of
the trial season looked very promising with all members of our team arriving half an hour early,
warming up and getting ready for the game. However, due to Grammar’s superior strategic
knowledge, they managed to take home the victory. Despite the losses, there were a few wins
including Misha Libman who reinforced our team with a tiebreak of 8-6 and Leonard Mah who stole
the spotlight that day with an outstanding result of 6-2. Although we struggled to find our pace
throughout the games, we will use this valuable experience to outsmart Grammar next term as we
work on our strategy and game play.

Table Tennis Success
Glanden Zheng (Year 10) and Edward Belakopytov (Year 8) recently participated in the 2012
Australian National Table Tennis Championships held in Perth. All the states and territories of
Australia were represented as well as Korea. It was Glanden’s third competition (U/18's NSW
Boys B team) and Eddie’s first (U/15's NSW Boys B team). The first four days were team
events, with the doubles events interwoven between them. The singles events started on the last
two days of the competition, where we got to witness some spectacular Australia vs. Korea
clashes. All in all, it was a very satisfying experience and we were proud to represent the state
at the most important Table Tennis event for juniors on the calendar each year.
