From the Andrews Junior LibraryThanks to 2012 Library Monitors and Office BoysAs this is term 4 and we may forget to do this, our Library staff would like to acknowledge the incredible assistance we receive every year from our 240 Library Monitors. These boys put every one of the 9000 or more books our students borrow per annum back onto shelves. This year the boys have put subject added entries onto 700 Links for Learning Websites- a job that is close to being finished. They have also looked up every one of our 2058 websites on our OASIS catalogue to find out if they were still working. They do numerous other jobs that make us much more effective as a Library, such as making up our new books window displays. We would also like to thank the Office Boys who come up in period 6 and shut and lock all our windows, turn our computers off, put books away and tidy up the chairs and newspapers. This is again saving our staff 50 minutes of repetitive work per day and gives us extra time to accomplish other tasks. The beautiful grace the boys display when they help us is a joy. Thank you to all our helpers! Coming up in Term 4The last half of the Fiction Stocktake and the Film Festival and a final run at Literacy Circles for Years 7&8. Donation ThanksMany thanks also to Ms Meredith Thomas, who has worked on a temporary basis in the Library this term, for her donation of books and DVDs. Thanks also to the Heatrick family who donated more books again this term. Also to Ms Kilmore from Maths for her recent donation : From the CanteenThank you for supporting our canteen throughout the year. We are very fortunate to have one of the few school canteens not privately owned. This means that all profits are returned to the school and are used for extras not provided by the Department of Education, which benefit all of our sons. Canteen has been able to give the P&C a further $40,000.00 this term, making a total of $80,000.00 for the year. We are so fortunate to be able to make this large amount of money, whilst still providing healthy, home-made food choices for our sons at very affordable prices. This would not be possible without the professional running of the canteen by our fantastic, hard-working Managers Karen and Tracey to whom we are extremely grateful. We are losing a number of Year 12 parents this year and in order to continue to raise this much needed money for the school we are seeking some new volunteers. If you have any time available, please contact the canteen on Ph: 9360 4027, even if you can only help one day a term it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to our volunteers last week.

Sharon Hughes High TideSydney Boys High School Sailing20th October 2012Sydney High sailors achieved mixed results in Round Two of the Saturday Points score Term 4 Series sailed on Rose Bay on Saturday morning in very light and shifty SW to W winds. Earlier, the Christening and Naming Ceremony for the new Pacers “Moves like Jaggar”, “Don Roach” and “Narrina” had seen a large crowd of sailors and their parents at the Double Bay Sailing Club sheds. This allowed Sydney High to field a ten boat fleet for the first time and the start this week saw a larger fleet with thirty boats from four schools (High, Scots, Cranbrook and Ascham) contesting the second round. Bec Loder and Lailie Walker (SGHS) sailed the most consistently this week with a 6th and a 7th placing in the two races held. David Evans and his crew were also very consistent (8th and a 9th). Tim Pilien sailed very well for a 13th and 10th placing and good placings were achieved by Marcus James (6th in the first race), Darren Tiang (12th) and Connor Robinson (11th). Hayden Rabone sailed competitively for his first race on the helm and should show improved results in future regattas. 27th October 2012Round Three of the Saturday Point Score Series saw an increase in wind strength compared with previous weeks and with this 10-15 Knot SW to SE wind, the racing was more exhilarating. Both races were typical long course fleet races, with a triangle, sausage and triangle course to the finish. The Cranbrook and Scots boats took an early lead off the start and looked very comfortable in these conditions. They were closely followed by Bec Loder, David Evans, Marcus James and Tim Pilien. Things were tight at all marks and boats sailed well to anticipate and avoid penalties. The best sailor was Bec Loder with a sixth placing, David Evans and Tim Pilien in the top ten. With the absence of at least three normal skippers this week, the junior skippers were given the chance to perform well in the difficult conditions. Race two was an even better result from Sydney High sailors with a win both due to excellent sailing by Bec Loder, with Lailie Walker (SGHS) as crew and the disqualification of other boats for being OCS or over the line at the start and failing to return and start again. David Evans sailed well with Tom Du to claim a fifth place and Tim Pilien and Daniel Fang an sixth and eighth place Both this week’s races achieved the MIC benchmark of three in the top ten places in each race. A number of skippers have sailed well this week at training. Vincent Xu has moved confidently into one boat and displayed a reasonably high level of competence whilst sailing on both Saturdays and Thursdays. The student roster put into place this week was not successful and so all students will need to turn up for Saturday Sport this weekend, unless they have been granted leave and possess a note (with a very good excuse). Students that cannot adhere to this policy will need to find another sport to compete in this Term. Next week it is essential for all boys to turn up, as it is our Regatta for the Saturday Point Score Series. Sailing will be conducted on a course within Double Bay and it is hoped a better result will be achieved. A number of sailors will be needed to help on the start boat and the laying of marks. A final reminder that the Sailing Dinner will be this term and that further details will be advised soon. It is anticipated that it will be held at the DBSC clubrooms. It will be a plate dinner where everyone brings a plate of food.
Thanks to those sailors who did extra this week by turning up to increase the numbers sailing,
even though they were rostered off. Their help is very much appreciated. Basketball: Shooting HoopsHigh vs. KingsTerm 1 2012 Results

AAGPS First Grade Table
This week our 1st Grade side had pulled off their first win of the season against King’s! Having lost to the same team by only one point at the Sydney School’s Shoot out in the holidays, it was sweet revenge for 1st Grade when it counted as we won by 11 points this time round. Characteristics of the King’s School in any age group are their gigantic size that tower over many of our High players. However, this week our Opens still managed to do extremely well having only 7th and 8th Grade losing by narrow 3 point margins, with Captain Weber Liu of 7th Grade extremely apologetic after stacking it in the final seconds and throwing the game away. Following this, we have another match report from the captain of 6th Grade, who’s on a fiery winning streak since the beginning of the season:
Entrenched on a two-game winning streak, the 6th Grade Basketball team embarked on a long
road trip to the King’s School for Round 3 of the GPS. Captain Kenneth Ho was quarantined
from the team after failing to overcome influenza. After a one-week hiatus, speedster Terence
Pham was reinstated to the starting line-up. Head Coach Mr W Baldock looked for a boost from new
acquisition Marshall Li, and was extremely satisfied when Marshall continuously blocked out all
the space in the key. Former All-Star Andrew Wu continued his renaissance with another vintage
Air Wu performance, bulldozing his way to the bucket relentlessly, whilst also utilising the
fly-swatting technique in defence. During the second half, Andrew Wu’s jaw dropping finesse
held the King’s School at bay. In the closing seconds, Sydney High held on tenaciously,
passing the ball around to burn the last 40 seconds of the game away. We also have Mr Hayman’s team of the week:I was very impressed with the 14As who tied the second half of their game 14 points all. I’d like to see us break the Kings full court trap consistently next time. Most of the schools we play against have been practising for a number of years together when we meet them in Year 7. Such a close, tied game in the second half is a great result for us going forward. This week we will be playing Sydney Grammar. Grammar has been an arch rival to High in basketball and academically. We look forward to seeing High winning most of this Saturday’s games, with the lower grades possibly pulling off their first win of the season if they haven’t already won!! Remember to use your time well and prepare yourself both mentally and physically this Saturday for a big game ahead. Good luck!
~ Go HIGH! Sydney Boys High School RowingBack to the Sheds Regatta 2012High Rowing welcomed Old Boys, parents, and supporters to the Rowing Sheds last Saturday, 27th October for the Back to the Sheds Day. The day started well with beautiful weather for the High Challenge rowers to finish off their six week rowing program with a mini regatta right in front of the sheds. Congratulations to all 3 crews who rowed their best on the day and entered the spirit of the event with some colourful rowing outfits and crew names. Our Captain of Boats, Alex Pereira, welcomed old boys back to the sheds and thanked the High Rowing Challenge crews for their donations. Then it got serious with the feature race of the day - the Best of the Old Boys challenging the School VIII. Congratulations to the Old Boys crew (which included some very recent Old Boys!) who had to put in a powerful and less technical race to beat the current School VIII over 500m for 2012. Old Boys – Vlad Boulavine , James Gerofi, Isaac Eveleigh, Jack Musgrove, Dom Edgtton, David Andrews, Andrew Blomberg, Tim Gollan and coxed by Gareth Deacon. School VIII – Alex Pereira, Nelson Tang, Steve Comninos, Daniel Keogh, Ashley Chan, Ronald Tran, Kin Pan, Brandon Vu, and coxed by Dan Tam. A highlight of the day was the short ceremony to celebrate new signage provided by SHS Foundation -'The Outterside Centre' at the entrance to the centre, and 'Sydney Boys High School Boatshed' on the riverside of the sheds. Geoff Andrews, Chairman SHS Foundation, unveiled a portrait of Bob Outterside, Principal 1977 – 1992, to be mounted next to Jim Budge, as recognition of Bob’s outstanding contribution to Sydney Boys High School over many decades. 1st Grade
The boys were in high spirits for the upcoming trial match against King’s, however missing
our captain Frank Zhang it was always going to be a tough match. The doubles combinations
worked well together to bring High to a 3-0 lead at the start of the day. The number 1 pair
consisting of Patrick and Brian won in straight sets after a close second set tiebreak to end the
match 6-4 7-6. Adam and Josh fought back from a set down to win in a nail biting 3rd set
tiebreak with only 2 points being the difference 4-6 6-2 10-8. After losing the second set Ian
and Eddy regained their focus and overcame their opponents in the 3rd set tiebreak. In the
singles, Brian played a tough opponent and overcame many mental barriers to win his match in a
deciding set 4-6 6-2 6-4. After an awesome first set Pat’s scorching forehand began missing
only marginally, causing him to dig deep and defeat his opponent in a 3rd set 6-1 6-7 6-3.
Josh played a solid match, not giving his opponent any chances of getting on top, winning in
straight sets 6-2 6-4. Grinding his opponent down, Adam played an awesome match only dropping 3
games to overcome his opponent 6-2 6-1. After losing a close first set, Eddy played controlled
and aggressive tennis to dispatch his opponent in a quick 3rd set 5-7 6-4 6-2. Filling in for
first grade, Ian faced a tough task in his singles going down to a formidable opponent 4-6 2-6.
The final result showed High on top of King’s with a score of 11-1. This is High’s
first win over King’s in a number of years. The boys will be looking forward to our next
match against our long-time rivals Grammar. 2nd Grade
2nd Grade headed to King’s in round 3 of the trial season fielding an inexperienced
team, looking to improve on the performances of the previous weeks against Joeys and Newington.
The doubles matches were close and competitive. Number 1 doubles Richard and Carl fought hard to
win the second set after losing the first, but were unable to close out the match in the super
tiebreaker, going down 3-6 6-4 8-10. Number 2 doubles Ryo and Calvin played well but could not
overcome their opponents, losing 4-6 6-4 6-10. James and Bohan played together for the first time
at Number 3 doubles, and could not maintain their level of play after a close first set, going
down 4-6 0-6. In the singles, Richard played a solid opponent with a strong serve, and was unable
to win some key points, going down 2-6 4-6. Carl played a very consistent opponent and took the
first set, but lost the momentum in the second and third, losing his second three-setter in as
many weeks, 6-4 1-6 1-6. Ryo performed well and had good rallies, but was outplayed by a quality
opponent, 4-6 2-6. Calvin took the fight to his opponent and claimed the first set, but let the
match slip after a close second set, going down 6-4 5-7 2-6. James played well against a solid
opponent and unfortunately went down 4-6 2-6. Bohan had a tiring match with long groundstroke
exchanges, but lost to a more consistent opponent 4-6 2-6. Although the end result was a loss,
our team gained valuable experience and will train hard in preparation for next week’s
fixture against Grammar. For more info check out the tennis website at:
15s Tennis played the King's School last week with all losses. The scores
in doubles As were 1-6 (A1+2) and 3-6 (A3+4), Bs both 2-6. Some of our singles were closer to
success, the closer matches were 5-6 for Preetham Kaddappu (A3), 5-6 Anthony Yu (A2) and 4-6
Rick Song (B4). Good luck for next week when we try to play more consistently.
