High Talent
A fantastic effort by Ivor Metcalf at the CHS Athletics
Championships – 4 gold medals: long jump, high jump, triple jump and hurdles! Well done to
Scott Renzenbrink for his gold medal in the 200m and Ervin Zhou for his bronze in the 90m
hurdles. Congratulations to Riley Irwin, John Seroukas, Lokesh Sharma and Peter Stephens (Year
10) who won the Sydney East Regional Final of the PDC Teasdale Cup debating competition against
Sydney Girls. There was great news for Wilber Koslowski who was awarded the SAGSE Scholarship for
a three month exchange in Germany. Condolences to the Opens basketball team who were beaten in
the NSW Championships after winning the CHS Knockout. Without injured players Craig, Geoff and
Matthew the team struggled to get rebounds. It was great to get as far as they did this year.
Congratulations to Jack, Eamon, Mitchell, Jasper, Daniel, Blake, Scott, Nathan, James and
Christian. Last week High competed in the NSW Schoolboys Shield for table tennis. Glanden Zheng
and Edward Belokopytov won silver medals and qualified to play in the national championships in
Perth. Congratulations to them and the team for a strong performance. In tennis news,
Brian Tran won an International Tennis championship in Slovenia. At Port Stephens, our Stan Jones
Cup Knockout tennis team drew in their opening match against Epping Boys 4 sets all but were
beaten on games won. After two easy victories against Narooma (8-0) and Albury (5-1) the team of
Patrick Rynsaardt, Frank Zhang, Lachlan Day and Adam Smagarinsky played off for 5th in NSW in the
consolation final, defeating Farrer 5-1.
Open Day
Louise Graul organised another well-attended Open Day on Thursday
last. Thanks to her and all the parents, staff and volunteer boys who gave up their time. There
seemed to be a lot of interest in the school and the gathering of >200 in the Great Hall,
appeared positive about what they experienced. In my address I outlined 7 features of the school.
Our Junior School initiative of 3 Year Advisers and support from Learning Curve and Elevate
Education is an important program for 2012-2014. Our curriculum structures are interesting with
purposeful grouping, banding, streaming in mathematics, telescoping in stage 5, the 2:3 elective
system and acceleration. I stressed the access to activities that the school provides. A central
program at High is personal skill development through competitions for individuals and teams,
leadership opportunities, organisation roles in various groups, performance opportunities in
drama, tournament of minds, public speaking and debating, and organisation of events such as
mufti days, volunteer work, or talent quests. We push citizenship through our Year Projects, the
Community Services Committee, Amnesty International and volunteer work. I think that our process
for recognition is a prominent aspect of life at High. High Notes, High Flyer, the Awards Scheme,
honour boards, memorabilia displays, artworks and scholarships all recognise and acknowledge the
achievement of our boys. The final aspect of High that was emphasised was its uniqueness in its
access to GPS and CHS competitions in sports, debating and chess as well as its shared campus
context with SGHS.
Year 8 Student Mentors
At this time of year we are again asking boys in
Year 8 to act as mentors for the incoming group of Year 9 boys in 2013. Mentors are usually
assigned to new boys from the same suburb or to boys who are interested in the same sports or
activities. The task involves making contact with a new enrolment boy via telephone, skype or
email and familiarising him with what goes on in first term at High. As a follow up,
mentors provide contact details so that new arrivals can ask them questions about any aspect of
school life that they might like to know about. Mr Codey will be coordinating the mentor program
for Year 9, 2013. Award Scheme points are available for volunteers.
Year 12 Reports
All Year 12 boys should have their reports. They were
discussed during school time from Tuesday to Friday this week with most boys. Boys who have not
yet collected their reports will have to make appointments with the Principal on Monday or
Tuesday morning.

SAGSE Scholarship
AND THE WINNER IS …
Wilber Koslowski (Yr 11) who has been awarded a
SAGSE scholarship. He will leave Sydney at the end of November 2012 and return at the end of
January 2013, spend two months living with a German family and go to school with his host sister
or brother. The students (about ten from all over Australia) also have a winter camp where they
get to know each other. The group then travels to Berlin where they attend a reception at the
Australian Embassy. During their free travel time they can explore more German cities, castles,
the fast trains, the food, the hot drinks and the cold, cold weather! Sounds good? It is –
almost all costs are covered by the scholarship – but not any excess luggage on the return
trip if they have bought too many souvenirs!
The Society for Australian-German Student Exchange scholarships was founded in 1967 in Melbourne
and there is a lot of information if you google SAGSE. You don’t have to be perfect in
German - you will be by the time you get back – but you need to be an all-round good
scholar as you are going as an ambassador for Australia. Those of you who met Rouven Stubbe might
know that he was here as a German exchange student of the same scheme. And Andre Brokman had also
been a recipient of the scholarship in 2009. If you are interested and approaching Year 11, start
practising by saying: Ich bin ein Austauschschueler!

Debating Parents & Students
I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the
2012 Annual Debating Dinner, from setting up the hall, the purchasing of last minute shopping
items, manning the door, the clean up and anything else related to the evening. Your help was
greatly appreciated. This is my last year at the school and I hope that you all keep the
debating tradition going strong and support the DSG as I have for the last 6 years.
Congratulations to each and every boy for all their hard work during the year, you should all be
very proud of yourselves.
Last but not least, I would like to say thank you to Dr Jaggar for his continued support of the
debating programme and Ms Powell who has taken the debating programme to a new level with renewed
enthusiasm, and to Lorraine Dwyer in the Front Office for your endless help to me over the last
few weeks. THANK YOU.

Thank you to our volunteers last week. Unfortunately on Friday we had no volunteers
available, so a big thank you to Usha Arvind for coming in at the last minute and to Nada Andrews
who came in before work to make the sandwiches and rolls. Unfortunately when we don’t
have enough volunteers we are unable to provide all the usual favourites. If you have any
available time to help out in the canteen please give us a call on 9360 4027. Any help

HSC Music Performance Exam

Twighlight Soiree
A soire will be held next Wednesday 19th of September in the Great Hall from 6pm-7:30pm. All
students, staff and parents are welcome!!! The following ensembles/bands will perform on the
night: Jazz Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra, Senior String Ensemble, Senior
Stage, Choir and also a special performance by one of our own Year 12 HSC Music boys =D

Instrumental tutors have been talking to the music staff and are concerned with some of the boys
as they’re not prepared for their lesson .Please remember PRACTICE DAILY, if only for 20
minutes is required for you to develop your awesome musical skills and make your tutor happy.

High vs Grammar
The last GPS game was very competitive for all teams, with the effort of the round going to the
successful 15Bs. Support for the 1st XV was as its best for the game against Grammar. With many
of our team playing their last game for Sydney High the team went down narrowly. I hope everyone
enjoyed a wonderful season.

15Bs report
After what was, by far, the best and most intense training
session the 15Bs had undergone all year on Thursday, it was clear that we were up to the
challenge of playing against Grammar in what would be both the biggest game of the season, and
the last for long time coach Samson Lou. In what was, as quoted by assistant coach Michael Wong,
‘the best half of rugby played this year by this side’, the 15Bs showed the virtues
and characteristics encouraged by High Rugby for decades, leading to an emphatic try by Brian
Chan. Off the back of continuous forward ball and quick hands to the wings, the 15Bs squad
maintained constant control of the game, leading to a score line of 12-5 after a bumbling run by
forward Michael Jun to snatch a second try. However, with less than 10 minutes left, High showed
resilience under constant pressure with Grammar beginning to mount a comeback as Bailey Musulin
and Niyazul Bari made, what was, the play of the game; a try saving tackle and subsequent
grounding in the very last run in order to secure the last victory for Coach, Samson Lou.
SBHS Rugby Dinner 2012

WHO? Players, parents, coaches, friends and supporters. Players to wear school uniform.

WHY? To acknowledge the commitment and achievements of all our players and because
friendships made through High Rugby last a lifetime.

SBHS Football Dinner 2012
SBHS Football will celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge
coaches and supporters at the SBHS Football dinner on Thursday 20th September. .
Players are asked to take responsibility on a team-by-team basis for end-of-season gifts to their
team’s coach. Please take the time to do this as the coaching staff put in a fantastic
effort each season.
The dinner will be held on Thursday 20th September, in the Great Hall at 5.30pm Vegetarian
food will be available.
The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult and student. Children under 11 yrs old - $15.
Payment for the dinner must be made at the Main Office by Friday 14 September.

This is a 'Learn to Row' for the adults ... parents, friends, family, old boys and work

Enjoy early morning rowing for 6 sessions with experienced coaches and coxswains.
Enter your own crew of 8 or join others in a crew. If you can't make a week we can provide a sub
for you.
It all culminates with a fun mini-regatta on Saturday 27 October.
Donation: $300 per seat (tax deductible)
