High Talent
Well done to Dexter Gordon (Year 9) on his recent selection to perform at the Festival of Instrumental Music –The Acacia Concert at the Opera House. Congratulations to Shobhan Baranwal (Year 10) on his selection in the Senior State Wind Band. Sanishka Balasooriya (7E) has just published his first book on the iBookstore, a work of children’s fiction entitled The Secrets of the Portal. Congratulations, Sanishka! Well done to the Intermediate and Junior A Chess teams who have won the Region and now will contest inter-Regional semi-finals. Ray Cheng and Andrew Tayeh (Year 10), Leonard Mah and Shuxiang Wang (Year 9), Manil Abeysekera, Johnson Lin and Andrew Wu (Year 8) and Wesley Yu (Year 7) will represent High in the state semi-finals.

National Tree Day
Last Friday, August 27 was National Tree Day. To celebrate the occasion, a teacher and parent (who wish to remain anonymous) organised a planting day in conjunction with SGHS. More than 45 trees and shrubs were planted. Mulch, gloves, trowels and spades were donated by Bunnings Warehouse and most of the trees by the City of Sydney Council. Thank you to the boys who worked as volunteer gardeners on the day: Frank Zhang, Daniel Cordas (Year 11), Oliver Long (Year 10), Danel Jiang, Kevin Jia Liang, Aidin Karahasan, Raymond Mo and Simon Shields (Year 8).

We have a team of people working to enhance our environment. I urge the school community in general to respect plants, trees and garden areas. Please stay out of areas with barriers erected to protect plants, trees or grass to help stabilise growth. It is up to us all to keep our environment clean and attractive.

Year Advisers Appointed
As part of our Strategic Plan to enhance gifted attainment we appointed three Year Advisers to assist with the transition of our new students into Year 7. The success of this intervention has resulted in it being continued in 2013. The Year Advisers for Year 7 in 2013 are: Julie Eggleton, Mick Aldous and Annalise Mack. Carrying the experiment forward into Year 8 for 2013 will be Jamie Kay, Mina Genias and Betsy Berger. We are hopeful that the reduced ratio of students to Year Adviser will help us to address any pedagogical, behavioural or personal issues that may arise in the first two years of high school. I congratulate our Year Advisers on their appointment and wish them well in their endeavours to help our boys.

Double Bay Sailing Club Refurbishment
This Saturday marks the opening of the improved facilities at Double Bay Sailing Club. As well as new toilets, showers and change rooms, facilities for meetings have been extended and the storage capacity for SBHS boats and equipment has been enlarged. We will now be able to store and use 12 Pacers at the facility. Just in time for the summer season, our boys will enjoy greatly the improved venue for sailing. Thanks to SHSF Inc for facilitating funding of part of the refurbishment. Carrie Waring did a great job in assisting DBSC to access a community grant. Adam South helped a lot to make our area of the facility much more functional and accessible. The members of DBSC, led by Mark Bethwaite who managed the project, gave a large number of volunteer hours to complete the upgrade on time.

Visual Arts and Music Showcase
Some very interesting and diverse artworks were on show in the Great Hall on Monday evening. The students from HSC Music classes also showed of their talents as they performed their examination pieces to a small but appreciative audience. Our boys will be assessed for their performances on September 4 (Music 1) and 10 (Music 2 and Extension). Good luck to all candidates!

A Parent Information Evening will be held on Monday 10 September in the Great Hall at 6:00 pm to discuss the subjects studied by boys in Year 9 2013.

Year 10 2013 Parent Information Evening

A Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 4 September in the Great Hall at 6:00 pm to discuss the subjects studied by boys in Year 10 2013. Subject Acceleration (in subjects such as Modern History, Geography, Music etc) has been offered to Year 10 boys in past years. In 2013 Year 10 boys will study 3 electives (possibly including an Acceleration subject). The options available to boys for 2013 will be discussed at the meeting. The main focus of the meeting will be relevant for boys interested in subject acceleration.

Junior Library Chess Blitz

THINK YOU’RE A CHESS GOD? That you’re the best in your grade, or even in the entire school? Prove it in the “Professionals” Junior Library Blitz Chess Competitions that will be held throughout the year!

OPEN TO CHESS CLUB! Starting next week (week 8) the Year 12 Competition will be held at recess and lunch during Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Competition may continue into Week 9 depending on the number of players. If you would like to participate, sign up at the circulation desk in the Junior Library ASAP.

In term 4, the competition for other Year groups will be held in the week following the yearly exam period for that particular Year group. Winners will have boasting privileges and can participate in a final competition between the Year group champions at the end of the year to determine who the best in the school is! Keep an eye on the daily notices to stay informed!

Proud Schools

Sydney Boys High School is one of the 12 schools chosen to be part of the Proud Schools pilot project. To find out more about the project please read the attached media release which will appear in the next issue of Side By Side Magazine.

Schools proud to be part of pilot
Twelve NSW high schools are wearing their anti-discrimination credentials with pride under a pilot to support schools to address homophobia and transphobia, underpinned by the principle that schools are safe, supportive and respectful environments for all students.

Six high schools from the Hunter Central Coast region and six high schools from the Sydney region are part of the Proud Schools pilot. The pilot is led by the department's student welfare directorate.

The pilot aims to support high school communities to reduce homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism and it is envisaged the pilot will inform a final Proud Schools approach that all high schools can use.

The pilot is being implemented with the assistance of a steering committee with representatives from government and non-government agencies. This provides ongoing consultation with a wide range of agencies.

The high schools engaged in the pilot represent a range of schools, including co-educational, single-sex, metropolitan and rural, comprehensive and specialist.

Developing a framework
The Proud Schools pilot will develop a framework to support high schools to:

• address homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism; and
• provide a safe and supportive environment for same-sex attracted and gender-diverse students.

Pilot schools have undertaken initial planning to identify their core Proud Schools team. This includes identifying other school community members they will consult with along the way as well as local support agencies. When school communities work together real improvements in promoting understanding and reducing discrimination can be made. Schools have also completed a Proud Schools online staff checklist and visits with each of the pilot schools took place in Term 2. These meetings provided informal forums to share planning related to the pilot at the local school level.

As the pilot progresses it will provide support across a range of areas including:

• working with the schools to support them in planning and implementing strategies and initiatives
• professional learning for school staff
• information for parents to build awareness and understanding, and to facilitate and foster positive engagement
• student involvement
• support teaching and learning and whole school community action facilitate and support sharing of good practice.

Branding concepts for Proud Schools have been developed and consultation on these has occurred with the steering committee, the 12 pilot schools and with the Young People Advisory Group from the Commission for Children and Young People.

Work has now begun on the development of material for the department's website about Proud Schools and to support access to information for all school communities in this area.

Wear it Purple Day
Wear it Purple seeks to empower and support schools to be inclusive and safe, creating supportive environments where all students feel they are free to learn, grow and belong.

The student-run, not-for-profit group's annual Wear It Purple Day, where people are asked to wear purple in support of sexually and gender diverse young people, will be held on 7th September. Wear it Purple Day is an initiative that is open to all schools.

Replacement Bus

The school is currently finalising the purchase of a 28 seat Higer Bus to replace our aging 21 seat Coaster which has served the School well for some 16 years. The additional seating provided in the new bus adds capacity to the schools’ ability to support boys’ co-curricular activities. The funds for this purchase are being provided by the P&C which has, with the support of the school, been setting aside proceeds from the canteen every year for this purpose. The P&C would like to note the hard work of the canteen staff; the generosity of the canteen volunteers and sub-committee; the ongoing support of the canteen by parents and boys; and the foresight of previous P&C committees, which when taken together, make these significant asset purchases possible. Thank you to all.

Proposed Changes to Implementation of Sports Policy

Following on from the Sports Policy Information Forum, discussion amongst the various school bodies continues as to the composition of the proposed changes to the implementation of School Sports Policy. As has been communicated previously, parent awareness and involvement in these processes is integral to the proper functioning of a modern comprehensive high school. There is no doubt that in an increasingly busy world parents are sometimes reluctant to take on these additional burdens. Nonetheless, the school has always relied on the hard work and generosity of the school family to provide the unique educational opportunities available to our sons. Consequently we, as parents of the current generation of Sydney High Boys, have a responsibility to provide the support necessary to allow the school to continue offering these opportunities.

The Andrews Library is very grateful to our favourite bus driver, Ken Eadie, for his thoughtfulness in donating to our boys QF 32 by Richard De Crespigny (the story of the pilot who landed the Qantas Plane which had an engine fragment in mid-flight) – a brand new book.

LITERACY WEEK - AUTHOR VISIT
Congratulations to Mrs Suzanne Gordon our Senior Librarian for being the driving force behind the 2 day author visit to Year 10 and Year 8. The visit to the senior year was so successful that Richard has sold 50 books to our boys owing to the interest he generated. Year 8 will have an hour with Richard this Friday – a first author visit for the Junior Library. As you can see from this picture from Richard Harland’s Website, lately Richard has specialised in Steam Punk genre with his World Shaker Series, comprising World Shaker and Liberator. Richard’s previous series was the Ferrin and the Angel Series which we have in the Library. I have spent the last few days re-acquainting myself with Ferrin and the Angel and I am once again taken with Richard’s amusement at and satirising of the absurd in our civilisation. Richard is another Australian home-grown author hitting just the right notes with children’s literature.

What's Up in the McDonald Senior Library?

SF Steampunk author visiting SBHS this week!
Richard Harland the author of popular dystopian novels World Shaker and Liberator and many other titles, spoke to Year 10 students on Monday 27th. His presentation was a smash hit with many students who lined up to purchase one or both titles. Richard explained what Steampunk was and dressed accordingly in Steampunk attire which included an amazing fantasy version of a Victorian top hat, waist coat and tails. This genre is apparently an alternate version of the history of the nineteenth century in Europe. Much of this period was dominated, according to these fictional titles, by monstrous juggernauts of cities which roamed the world crushing all in their paths. Richard will be speaking to the Year 8s this Friday and I am sure that they will be as enthralled as the Year 10s were.

The libraries at Sydney Boys are pleased to organise author events especially relevant during Literacy Week. It has been our experience that authors speaking about writing and promoting reading are quite inspirational for students generally. Richard Harland has developed a website containing many pages of writing tips for all writers of Fantasy and genre fiction. This is a free resource for students and new writers and can be found at:  

Currently we are adding many new titles to the Senior Library collection. They have been promoted on the school website under curriculum link for libraries. However, we discovered that often students do not find this link to our latest new titles if they have no particular reason to go into this part of the website. So, the libraries have located a “New Resources” link on the Library Enquiry screen which opens up when students login to their portal. Particularly useful for senior students is also a direct link to the “State Library E-Resources” also located on the Library Enquiry screen.

HSC Showcase Concert and Visual Arts Display

The HSC showcase on Monday 27th of August was a great success. The artworks were stunning and the performances were a sensational. Such amazing talent! Thank you to all boys and staff who helped out on the night. The sandwiches that were made by Ms May and the boys were delicious. We also had special guests arrive on the night, Miss Lim and Miss Gilmore. Well done, boys! All the best for the HSC!!! =)

High vs Joeys

The fifth GPS game was very competitive for most teams, with the 14s getting a clean sweep. The Opens team found it difficult to match the depth of a strong Joeys program. With two games to go it would be great to see as many people as possible to support the 1st XV in their remaining games.

16Cs Rugby
A 9 o’clock kickoff failed to deter a dedicated 16Cs squad which was still hurting from a heartbreaking loss to The Kings School. Coach Guoxi Bill Wang was left to sweat it out just moments before kickoff, as the try scoring tandem of Mitchell Flynn and Kenneth Ho were unavailable for team selection. A major backline reshuffle ensued. The 16Cs beloved fashion diva, Timothy Chung was thrust into the hot seat of flyhalf, while versatile utility, Alan Chen, filled in at outside centre. In the absence of speed demon, Anthony Tran, hulking winger Peter Vuong would look to stamp his authority on a starting position. In addition, raging bull, Austin Wang would make his return after a lengthy layoff. However, disaster would strike when Austin went down just two minutes into the contest. Further diagnosis would reveal a shoulder dislocation, which dealt a big blow to our championship aspirations. A lack of urgency saw High head into the sheds down three tries zip. A stirring speech by Coach Wang saw a motivated 16Cs outfit hit the ground running in the second half. Before long, attacking lynchpin Dhruv Saggar and hard hitter Webber Liu were bending the Joeys pack backwards. Combining this with Dhruv’s slick hands at the ruck, we had a recipe for success. During the second half, High would pile on three tries. Furthermore, Dhruv was held up several times, much to the dismay of the High faithful. Although Joeys would crash over for two late tries to seal their win, this was an extremely spirited game by the blue and brown. The three well conceived tries are a testament to Coach Wang’s controversial decision to run the attack through Dhruv Saggar. We look forward to a tight contest against Scots College at McKay next week.

High 13As vs St. Josephs 13As

This week saw High’s future 1st graders attain their first win in the sky blue and brown with a hard-fought win over St Josephs. .

After losing to them convincingly (they might have put seven past us) in the practice match earlier in the season, the 13As put in an inspired performance to record their first win of the season on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Joey's. The goal came in the second half from a well-taken penalty from Chris Nguyen, after his earlier goal-bound shot was handled in the box by a Joey's defender.

The game was an even affair. Joey's had chances but Jonathan Zheng, High's custodian, would not be bested, displaying equal measures of courage and skill, protecting the goal like his life depended on it.

It was good to see his hard work pay off: Jonathan has been arriving at matches an hour before kick-off to do goal-keeping training before the rest of the team warms up. Otherwise, it was hard to single out any players in the tremendous team effort: each performing their role for the team. Not only did the boys play some great football, they did themselves and their School proud by displaying great sportsmanship when tested by the increasing frustration that crept into a Joey's team that had been expecting an easy victory.

The result was a great milestone, but in truth it was the culmination of a lot of hard work and perseverance, and the belief within the team -- founded on improvement week by week -- in the processes we follow and goals we set for ourselves. On Saturday, August 25th, playing at home on Mission Field 6, the 13As stood up to be counted.

SBHS Football Dinner 2012

SBHS Football will celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge coaches and supporters at the SBHS Football dinner on Thursday 20th September. .

Players are asked to take responsibility on a team-by-team basis for end-of-season gifts to their team’s coach. Please take the time to do this as the coaching staff put in a fantastic effort each season.

The dinner will be held on Thursday 20th September, in the Great Hall at 5.30pm Vegetarian food will be available.

The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult and student. Children under 11 yrs old - $15.

Payment for the dinner must be made at the Main Office by Friday 14 September.
