High Talent
Congratulations to Fayed Morshedi (Year 8) who achieved the top score in
NSW and ACT in the ICAS English Competition. Well done to our Intermediate and Junior A Chess
teams. They have won their Regional Finals in the Inter Schools Junior Chess League competition.
Prefect Intern Elections
Year 11 students have put their names forward for placement
on the Ballot Paper for the election of Prefect Interns for 2012-3. Students have to qualify
before their names can be added to the Ballot. The first hurdle to jump is the Student Award
Scheme requirement. Candidates have to demonstrate how they will achieve a Platinum level award
by the end of this year. Students enrolling after 2008 need equivalent progress of one award per
year. The second benchmark is attendance. School role models cannot have unexplained absences or
a record of a lack of punctuality. Potential candidates have known this since term 3, 2011.
Likewise, there is an assumption of academic competency in a selective school underpinning the
role of School Prefect. Students with unresolved progress issues are unsuitable for the role of
Prefect as all their energies would be needed in meeting the school standard. The academic
cut-off score for 12 units is 441. Students below this score at their last report are vetoed.
They need to appeal to the Principal and attach at least one letter of support from a teacher
indicating improved progress. The Executive will be considering candidates at their meeting next
week. Mr Dowdell has informed applicants that they have not qualified.
HSC Practicals
As the Trial HSC continues, some students are actually sitting for
HSC practical examinations. On Monday afternoon the Drama class was assessed for its pieces. On
Friday Music 2 students had their compositions recorded. On Monday, Design and Technology
students have to submit their major works and Visual Arts students have to hand in their bodies
of work. Let’s help out our boys where we can so that they can meet their deadlines.
GPS Debating
It was great to have a home debate evening where the first grade was
done and dusted by 9:10. It was good that competitors, parents, visitors and staff could enjoy a
debate and get a reasonably swift result and adjudication. I hope that the changed length of
speeches and the immediate adjudication provisions will make home debates more attractive to the
High community. We have another home debate this Friday. Both our first and second grade teams
are undefeated this season in GPS and I’m sure they would really appreciate your support.
Scholarship Applications
Application forms are now available for both the Phillip
Day Memorial Scholarship and the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation Scholarship on the school
website. These scholarships are open to students who will be enrolled in Sydney Boys High in
2013. Applications close on November 30. I urge more boys to go to the website to find out about
the scholarships.

Educational Access Scheme (2013)
Most institutions that participate in the University Admissions Centre (UAC) have an Educational
Access Scheme (EAS) for applicants who have experienced long term educational disadvantage. To
qualify applicants must demonstrate that their educational performance during Years 11 and 12 or
equivalent has been seriously affected by circumstances beyond their choice or control.
Students applying for Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for Universities in 2013 will need to
download their booklets and application forms from the website:
If you require a Statement of Support from the school counsellors, your EAS form will need to be
in to them with all required documentation by beginning of week 8, term 3 (or before if
possible). The responsibility for sending the finalised application to UAC by closing date at end
of September 2012 rests with the individual student.

SBHS Debating
We have 3 more weeks of GPS to run and this week is our last Home debate against St
Joseph’s. I am hoping to get a big crowd to watch the Firsts Debate. I really recommend
that you come and see this phenomenal team in action. This home debate and the last debate
against Grammar are two that I would really encourage you to watch. In addition our seconds
remain undefeated in GPS and so we should have a big crowd to watch them as well.
We did well last week winning 10 out of the fourteen official debates. Well done boys and a
particular thanks to the Year 9s and 10s who put the rooms back for us. That really helps me at
the end of the night. Also a big thank you the Chair people - it was great to see so many new
faces doing this. Chairing is a great way to learn better debating skills and if you are in Year
7 you can do that in pairs and both get award points! Also a massive thanks to my three helpers:
Calum York, Nathan Kong and Oliver Long who really do a fantastic job of helping me out from 3.30
until 10pm. I am especially grateful for the vegetarian kebab they get for me!
Have you remembered to pay for the Debating Dinner yet? This is a fantastic night to celebrate
our achievements and this year we have the usual Debater of the Year prizes plus each debating
coach is nominating someone to win a $20 i tunes voucher. That means lots of prizes. Also you
will have fun watching the coaches in their debate plus a lovely meal AND all for $20 - what a
bargain!
Advance warning that because many of our coaches are going to Canberra for their own debating
competitions on August 31st there will be some changes to debating coaching. At the moment I am
definitely suspending all non GPS debating in Year 9 and above for that week only.
I look forward to seeing lots of you on Friday night.

MIC Debating
1st grade knew last week against Kings would be a difficult debate, with their team having made
the ISDA finals earlier in the year (the competition for private schools). With the easier
negative of having all juries made up of retired legal practitioners, we put in a solid team
performance in front of a packed crowd in 205 to secure a unanimous decision. Credit must also go
to our 3rd grade side who stepped up to seconds whilst the Year 11s were away at MUNA and managed
to win also. Today against Joeys is our final ever GPS home debate, and we would love another
large crowd to turn up to support us!

School Spectacular
Oliver Kirk in Year 11 has been selected as a featured artist in the “School Spectacular
2012.” Also, he was selected through a video audition to perform in the Bondi Junction
Westfield dining precinct on Friday and Saturday nights.
HSC Music
The HSC exam will be held in the first week of SEPTEMBER, so start gearing up, keep practising,
and prepare for the HSC performances.

Saturday 18 August Highlights
- 1st grade defeated Grammar 15-13 in the 5th set. Grammar came fired up for a big game but
High was able to hold on. It was a very close match.
- 2nd Grade defeated Grammar 3-0 in an excellent display of high quality volleyball.
- The 14As celebrated a big win after moving up a grade to play the Grammar Junior B team.
This Saturday is the last GPS volleyball round for the juniors. It is a home game and First Grade
need to win this match against St Ignatius to be GPS Champions.

High vs King’s
The fourth GPS game was very competitive for most teams, with 6 out of 14 teams winning and the
15s getting another clean sweep. After a narrow win in Round 3 the 1st XV were overrun by a very
quick King’s 3rd XV.

15As Rugby
Josh Leo continued his try scoring feast this weekend adding another five
tries to bring his tally of tries this season to over 20. The game against King’s this
weekend was again played in windy conditions but our team mastered the difficult conditions
quicker than the hard tackling King’s side. Anthony Chen scored a flamboyant try using his
unique step which baffles all on the field including his team mates. James Tinker converted 6
from 8 to add to the points tally. The support play of the team featured with many try assists,
most notable being the inside ball to Sam Musgrove for his second try under the posts. It was a
real team effort with the side concentrating on skimming and sealing the ball effectively in all
situations. We managed to set our defensive line quickly which prevented King’s from
scoring. Jackson Tan continues to impress with his grass cutting style of tackle which halts the
attack immediately. Bennette Jiang has mastered the offensive tackle with devastating effect
often sending the opposition behind the advantage line. Jesse Nixon played a real tight forwards
game and worked well with Damian Duong in close. Having trained our special D defence it was very
encouraging to see it work so effectively. Howard Gu took some exceptional hitups from the ruck
and made sure we always retained the ball. Daniel Ahn showed the benefit of training by taking
the high ball in blustery conditions with ease and turning defence into attack. Michael Hamilton
dominated the lineout and was virtually undefeated at the front. Rex Yi proved essential to our
defensive pattern by consistently trailing and picking off the inside runner from King’s.
This saved many line breaks due to his consistent effort. Our next challenge is Joey’s but
the improvement in the team has been consistent.

The 2012 SBHS Football Dinner
SBHS Football will celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge
coaches and supporters at the SBHS Football dinner on Thursday 20th September.
Players are asked to take responsibility on a team-by-team basis for end-of-season gifts to their
team’s coach. Please take the time to do this as the coaching staff put in a fantastic
effort each season.
The dinner will be held on Thursday 20th September, in the Great Hall at 5.30pm Vegetarian food
will be available.
The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult and student. Children under 11 yrs old - $15.
Payment for the dinner must be made at the Main Office by Friday 14 September.
Boys to wear school uniform at the dinner. Soft drinks provided. Parents may BYO wine and beer.

Information Forum: Proposed Changes to Implementation of Sports Policy
There was a very strong turnout of parents, boys and staff at the Sports Policy information forum
held in the Great Hall on Wednesday 15 August. The number of parents who attended and spoke
passionately to the topic highlights their interest in the school’s sports programmes and
underpins the importance of parent involvement in the proposed changes. Ultimately, it is the
parents and boys who have the most to gain from improvements in the delivery of the programme and
their participation in the process is fundamental to ensuring a successful outcome.

Cyber Seminar
Rachel Powell, Head of History at Sydney Boys is organising a seminar for parents presented by
Cyber expert Robyn Rishani on Thursday August 30. The presentation will be held in the
Great Hall starting at 6:30pm.
Robyn’s presentation is aimed at helping parents understand the cyber world that our sons
inhabit and will address issues such as, alternate online identities; cyber bullying; gaming
addiction and its prevention; online security and parental monitoring. These are live issues for
many school families and we strongly recommend it to all parents.
