Social Science FacultyAustralian Economic and Business Studies Competitions 2012High students achieved great success in this prestigious competition. Daniel Tam (Yr 11) was the National Winner in the Junior Division ($400). Aaron Wong (Yr 10) was a State Winner also in the Junior Division ($200). High Distinctions were awarded to the following students as well as the following prize money;
Flushed with success, students now have the opportunity to reap more rewards in the Semester 2
game of the ASX Share market Competition. Congratulations go to Aaron Hassan (Yr 10) who finished
3rd in NSW in the Semester 1 Game and received a plaque and a cheque for $400. Over 500 students
are registered for the Semester 2 ASX Game. Good luck to all.
Gifted and Talented Co-curricular ActivitiesTournament of MindsThe regional final is on 26th August at Sydney Girls. This year we will be entering teams in three disciplines. Christopher Chiam is facilitating the Applied Technology team of Marc Betbeder-Matibet, James Goh, Dominic He, Daniel Hu, Peter Lin, Stratton Vakirtzis and Madison Wu. Sooraj Prakash is facilitating the Social Science team: Hugh Bartley, Riley Irwin, Kieryn Mascarenhas, Andrew Nguyen, Justis Nguyen, Thomas Nguyen and Lokesh Sharma. Allan Feng is facilitator for team Language/Literature: Ganeshmoor Chandrasekaran, Sunny Cheng, Advait Joshi, Azam Malik, Karstan Michael, Eddy Xiong and Jeffrey Yang. These students are immersed in creating innovative solutions to the challenges which have been posed and they are learning what it means to work as a team, independent of outside assistance. Tournament of Minds is a wonderful opportunity for boys to work collaboratively with students from a range of year groups. (Each team must include 2 Year 7 students.) Wish them luck in their endeavour to complete their respective challenges within the 6 week time-frame which is rapidly expiring! Philosophy Group
The Philosophy core group consists of 3 students (Khushaal Vyas Yr 11, Riley Irwin Yr 10 and
Thomas Nassif Yr 9), who are being supported by the group in their preparation for the
Philosophon being hosted by Ascham on the 8th September. The regular participants in our circles
of inquiry on Tuesdays are: Michael Alexandratos, Marc Betbeder-Metibec, Christopher Chen,
Christopher Ketkeo, Philip Mai and Nelson Tamg. (Other students have dropped in casually for a
session.) This year we have been very grateful for Dr Jaggar’s support in allowing us to
engage a PhD student from UNSW as tutor. Mr Hamish Dunlop was recommended by Dr Karyn Lai (mum of
Toby Funston in Yr 12) who very generously gave her time to prepare students for this event last
year. The topics this year are not for the faint hearted! 1. How can I be happy? 2. Do Animals
have minds? 3. Is it morally worse to kill someone than to let someone die? If you want to know

Educational Access Scheme (2013)Most institutions that participate in the University Admissions Centre (UAC) have an Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for applicants who have experienced long term educational disadvantage. To qualify applicants must demonstrate that their educational performance during Years 11 and 12 or equivalent has been seriously affected by circumstances beyond their choice or control. Students applying for Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for Universities in 2013 will need to download their booklets and application forms from the website:
If you require a Statement of Support from the school counsellors, your EAS form will need to be
in to them with all required documentation by beginning of week 8, term 3 (or before if
possible). The responsibility for sending the finalised application to UAC by closing date at end
of September 2012 rests with the individual student.
PAWS Update
The new People and Animal Welfare Society have got off to a flying start this term! They
have made posters to educate the school community about some of the issues they have been
learning about, had a guest speaker attend one of their meetings and are now organising a raffle
to raise money for Peanuts Funny Farm, an animal sanctuary that also helps children from
dysfunctional backgrounds. Look out for raffle tickets on sale next week – there are some
great prizes to be won!

SBHS DebatingThis week I am very excited to have received the completed First Grade ties. Unfortunately it was a little late for the Debating Assembly and the Hume Barbour final, but in time for the final four GPS debates. The boys will look very smart in matching ties and it makes me pleased that for the first time debaters will receive something to show they represent our school at a co-curricular activity. It’s something for you younger boys to aspire to as these will only be awarded to First Grade debaters. Well done to the Year 11 PDC team who made it through to the regional Final on Friday, but were very closely beaten by SGHS. Agnish, Connor, Wilber and Khushaal have done well debating this term and I have enjoyed watching them in their PDC debates. They have won (as members of the Seconds or Thirds) all of their GPS debates so far and I hope they enjoy continued success. As well Khushaal, Connor, Wilber will be at the MUNA national final this weekend. We wish them all the best with their representation of Iran at the conference. Meanwhile Year 8 lost against Randwick Girls and so are out of the PDC comp, but Year 10 are through to the regional quarter finals. On Friday we had a 75% winning score against Shore. Well done to you all boys. It was an awful night and I was very pleased to see so many parents turn up. I was EXTREMELY impressed with the quality of the debate by our Year 7 debaters. You boys are going to be a force to be reckoned with in later years. Keep up the excellent work. Tonight we have a home debate against Kings and so I hope to see many of you here. Please remember all the new rules regarding GPS and the Code of Conduct. Antony Paul is leaving us this week to go on a foreign exchange. Don’t worry Antony will be back next year and Felix is taking over from him to see out the GPS season. Thanks and Good luck to both of them.
I am selling tickets for the Debating Dinner or you can pay at the office. I am amazed at how
many seats have already gone. If you want to attend you need to get your tickets in good time.
This year we have the coaches’ debate and each coach will be awarding a prize – so
it’s EVEN more of an incentive to come along. In addition it’s a lovely evening to
celebrate your successes which will be fresh in our mind, as it is the day after our last debates
against Grammar.
This week against Kings (at home, don't forget a plate of supper!) marks the midpoint of the GPS
season, and so far our 1st and 2nd grade teams couldn't have asked for a better start, winning
all three of their debates so far. Particularly impressive are some of the results in the junior
years, so it looks like High debating is in good hands for the future. Also very encouraging was
the number of debaters coming to watch the 1st grade last week at Shore, hopefully we can better
that for the last 2 home debates of the season!

Music NotesHSC Showcase Concert and Visual Arts DisplayThe HSC showcase will be held on Tuesday 28th of August in the GREAT HALL 5pm-8pm. This is an opportunity for you to come, hear and view the students work!!! PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT YOUR PEERS!!! Staff are also welcome to see an extraordinary showcase of amazing talent! Term 3 Ensemble Rehearsal TimetablesThere have been a couple of adjustments for ensemble rehearsal times in Term 3. Please check the timetable and arrive ON TIME! There are NO EXCUSES for not attending or arriving late to ensemble rehearsals. ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM. Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% of ATTENDANCE is required. This week, High played Newington in a very close match. The new look High team exceeded
expectations in keeping their nerve under extended pressure. Closely losing the first set, the
team rallied in the second to make the set score 1-1. High closely lost the third set, however
the exuberance and energy provided by the new younger members of the team allowed for a close win
in the fourth set. Going into the decider, we knew the Newington side would give us a dogfight.
However, the spirit of the team was able to triumph, getting off to a fiery start, gaining a
solid lead of seven points which saw us to the win. Notable mentions go to Shawn Norohna who had
a blinder in the fifth and to Jason Lee for backing up after playing a previous five setter for
second grade. Thank you also to those who stayed behind to act as linesmen and scorers. Junior competition

Football: The Onion BagWeek 3 against Shore saw High open its win column for 2012, recording a gutsy 2-1 victory. Back at home on the smaller, faster Dave Phillips synthetic, it was going to be tricky overturning the 2-1 defeat suffered in pre-season against a Shore outfit with a lot of skill. Compounding this was the news that starting striker Oliver Meroni had damaged his ACL in the game against St Ignatius and was out for the rest of the season. We wish Oli all the best and hope for a speedy recovery. On the back of that re-shuffle, Mark Iskandar got promoted from 2nds and Andreas Purcal was left to fill Oli’s boots up front. The message prior to the game was that it will not be the most skilful team who wins today, but the team that is willing to work harder, push for every ball and play the full 80 minutes at the highest intensity. High was first to open the scoring and it came from an unlikely source. With a strong wind at High’s backs for the 1st half, some good build up play saw High receive a free kick in an attacking position. Up stepped Daniel Jones and, whilst the strike was not the cleanest, it was perfectly placed into the far corner and out of reach of the Shore ‘keeper – 1-0. Shore had a free kick in a similar position and if not for the strong hands of Anton Brokman in goal, it could have been all square. Half time came and went with the knowledge that the wind was now in our faces, making our task all the more difficult. However, it was to be High that would be next to score. On the back of a perfectly weighted cross, Arjun Punekar rose above the pack like a salmon leaping upstream to head the ball home. Unfortunately, as is often the case in football, High relaxed and a well-weighted through ball left the Shore striker one on one with Brokman and he made no mistake, halving the deficit. Some stoic defending from High saw them hold this lead all the way to the final whistle, taking the 3 points. Another superb team performance and one that leaves the 1st XI in an excellent position on the table as the only undefeated team remaining. High face another strong test against King’s on the weekend and with the majority of football fixtures taking place at King’s, we strongly urge all boys to come and support the 1st and 2nd XIs after their games. SBHS RugbyHigh Rugby = High SpiritRugby Website: High vs Shore The third GPS game was very competitive for most teams, with 7 out of 15 teams winning and the 15s getting a clean sweep. After a narrow loss in round 2 the 1st XV showed fighting spirit to hold off a rampaging Shore 3rd XV. With only 13 men left in the last ten minutes to defend the line the boys held on to come up with a 19-17 victory. Team reports –Each week one team/age group report will feature in the High Notes with the rest going on .
“Today, we have to win this…” I told the team. We were supposedly
facing a team much faster and stronger than us. We had a strategy to play smart and to work with
our advantages; lineouts, running and our rucking. High lost the flip, and the other team kicked
to us with the wind at our backs. We were all uneasy but when the whistle sounded, we were off
and running. Our forward pack was rucking extremely well, and our backs were not dropping the
ball despite the high wind. Shore scored the first try with an overlap on the wing. We then
scored two successive tries by Elliot and Chris and ran off with high spirits. The score was
firmly at 14-5 our way. We ran on and held our game until Shore did a quick pick and drive and
scored a try. The score was 14-12 and we were feeling a little bit shaky. Shore drove us back and
got a penalty at 5 metres away from the try line. The ref called last play, and we did a
successful tackle and we were holding them back. We then got too many in the ruck and they pick
and drove down the blind side to score a try and a conversion to leave the score at 19-14
Shore’s way. We played an excellent game and we were pleased with our effort. Upcoming games –

Rowing Committee Annual General Meeting
Date: Tuesday 21 August 2012 Come and find out about new developments for the upcoming season. Rowing is a great sport that High provides for your boys. It also relies on parents to help facilitate the program. Every year we need new parents to become involved. All Office Bearer positions will be declared vacant and available for nomination and election.
All parents of rowing students are encouraged to attend the annual general meeting.
