Winter Sports Assembly 2012
Special guest speaker, Mr Mark Hughes, Canterbury football great and current Recruitment Manager for South Sydney Club, spoke of his mentors and his membership of great teams. He urged the boys to set goals, be passionate and persistent in what they do and always have fun at sport. My speech to the assembly is reprinted below:

"Special guest Mr Mark Hughes, players, coaches, staff, parents, students – welcome to our Winter sports assembly for 2012. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where we gather, the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, and pay our respects to them and their elders past and present, and to any Aboriginal people here today.

"I am pleased to come to a winter sports assembly with a feeling that as a school we are slowly coming to terms with the changed environment of GPS competition. The whole organisation of sport in our member schools has shifted up a gear. The Corinthian days are over. The culture change has permeated from as down as far as Es and Fs in some GPS schools. We can no longer just attend Wednesday or Thursday sport and turn up on Saturday for our games. Such an attitude just won’t do. Our chances of being competitive in any match, in any sport, at any level will be diminished by the amount of the training gap between us and our competitors. The Sports Council, as a committee of the School Council, has developed a draft SBHS Sports Policy for discussion by school governance groups, staff, students and parents. It is my hope that the directions of the policy are embraced by the wider school community and that its details are discussed in a public forum over the next few weeks so that its philosophy and purpose are understood by our community.

"Cross country running has become quite a high participation sport I am pleased to see. A selection policy applies and only 100 students can be accepted. It is a welcome boost to the demanding activity. Thank you to Rebecca Dam for her organisation of the sport and to Messrs Kesting, Bigelow and Elliott for their involvement in its operation. Fencing is becoming stronger and more diversified with the benefit of its own base in the COLA, the availability of intensive training at UNSW and due to the influence of elite coach Antonio Signorello. More of our boys seem to be medalling now with the added disciplines of epee and sabre. Thank you to Jenni May for her ongoing management of fencing and to Ben Wilcock and Cheryl Chan for their assistance with coaching.

"Volleyball is continues to be very strong, as showcased by its recent CHS Knockout win and unbroken string of GPS victories. Thank you Michael Kay, his coaching staff and Marina Trompetter, for making the program such an icon of High winter sport for the last decade.

"Thank you to Cathy Meaney, Daniel Comben, Sam Kremer, the SBHS Rifle Committee and the Sydney High Rifle Club Inc for the continued success of the High target rifle shooting program. Given the disruption to our program occasioned by the closure of the range at Malabar, our recent co-premiership is a tribute to the resilience of our boys and the strength of the organisation of the sport.

"Our rugby program has been strengthened this year with the appointment of Simon Kacimaiwai as Head Coach and George Barris as MIC.

"I want to thank staff managers of teams: Messrs Cipolla, Pavone, Hannon, Barris, Scrivener and Stein. The coaching support for our boys is impressive. Mick Aldous and David Knox bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program, backed up by the efforts of a dozen Old Boys coaches. Spare a thought today for Marco Stojanovik who suffered a serious injury late in the 2nd XV trial game last Saturday and is still in a High Dependency unit in hospital. His experience reinforces how much we have to stick to routines of looking after each other in team sports – before, during and after the game. Let’s hope his recovery is rapid and complete.

"Association Football has seen some changes this year. Under new MIC Matt Mulroney, the GPS competition program has moved to UNSW’s David Phillips complex with the advantage of an all- weather synthetic pitch. Mehdi Hazrati has returned to coach the first XI with Ian Robinson taking major responsibility for second grade. It is a shame that football and rugby cannot all be at McKay but we have had no luck in our ongoing attempts to have McKay 4 refurbished to an appropriate standard. Thank you to our football staff, including Victor Jauregui-Fernandez as Junior Football coordinator / Assistant Coach, Julie Eggleton, Evan Higgins, Jamie Kay, Mine Genias and Ingrid Hybler for their commitment to Football.

"Today I want you to consider how teams are built and tested. In the 2006 World Cup, Australia played very well against tournament favourites Italy in their round of 16 game and were gearing up for extra time when Grosso penetrated the box and Lucas Neill tried to block his cross but left his feet in doing so, allowing Grosso to fall over and gain what was a very controversial penalty. Australia’s loss was hard for the team to bear, particularly because it had built up so much momentum. Lucas Neill recounts: “We put in unbelievably passionate performances and other supporters were saying they wished their team had that much pride and enthusiasm for the game, and no fear, and enjoyed being there”. The lesson here is that even obvious underdogs can overachieve if the team develops self-belief, passion and a fearless desire to compete. I know the building blocks for such spirit are hard work and mutual support. Play hard, play in the spirit of the game, but above all, be there for your team. Congratulations to all boys selected in GPS teams this season. "

Classical Greek Reading Competition
Held annually at SYDNEY UNIVERSITY

On Tuesday 25th July, 2012, Tim COLLIER, of Year 11, won first prize, (shared with another student-competitor). He read aloud two texts in the original Classical Greek, a passage from Homer’s Odyssey, which he had diligently prepared, and one by the ancient Greek medical scientist Hippocrates (which he had to prepare in c. 20 minutes).

A Fairy Tail In German...

...was the title of the Goethe Institut competition for Year 10 students of German. Sagar Nagaraj wrote a new version of “The Frog King” in which the princess kissed the prince and he turned – into a frog and as with all fairy tales, they lived happily ever after. Sagar did not win the first prize (a trip to Germany), but the jury liked his story very much and he was presented with a highly commended award. We wish him better luck for his application for a SAGSE scholarship next year.

OLYMPICS DISPLAY
Thanks to Julie Maddocks, who is interning as a Teacher Librarian at the Andrews Library, we have mounted a display of Olympics Resources on our Newspaper Table and our Noticeboard this week.

INTERESTING DVDs (FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND STAFF)
This is a reminder to students and staff that the Junior Library attempts to offer a non-fiction learning related DVD collection which boys and teachers can borrow. We have just processed and put out some interesting DVDs about the impact of the Web on many aspects of our lives. These DVDs would suit TAS, Social Science, Values Ed and perhaps Science.

As the Library processes DVD resources related to a particular faculty we advertise by sending a photocopy of the cover to Head Teachers. We would appreciate it if these could be temporarily put on a wall or noticeboard as a visual reminder to teachers to check out our Library Online Catalogue for teaching resources. All resources relating to Science for example will come up under the search terms “Science-DVD” or teaching related web applications under “Science and L4L” (Links for Learning).

SBHS Debating

This week we are hosting our first GPS debate for the season. The debate is against Riverview. We will have a very busy night with two debates for Years 7 – 10 and then four Senior debates. There are new arrangements for GPS debating this year. As follows:

Topic Allocation -
Years 7-10 at 6pm and to Seniors at 6.45pm.
Years 7-10 only 45 minutes prep and Seniors 60 minutes

Reduced speaking times to the following:
Years 7/8: 3 to 4 minutes;
Years 9/10: 4 to 5 minutes;
Senior: 5 to 7 minutes.

It has also been resolved to abolish panel conferences in Seniors and instead ask the most senior adjudicator (the more senior adjudicator in a majority decision) to announce and explain the result.

It is important to understand that these changes have been made by the GPS Debating MICs in response to concerns raised by the Principals of the GPS schools. In particular they have been concerned about overly long speeches and adjudications which have an impact on the finishing time of the evening (which as you know can often be 9.30 – 10pm for Seniors, their Parents and MICs. This is a compromise which prevents us having to run all debates at the same time. High Parents, coaches and I were particularly against this proposal, as we encourage Juniors to watch seniors debate AND this is something I am encouraging you to do this week. The best way to learn to debate is to watch the Seniors.

Last Friday was the first week of the GPS debating season where we took on Newington. The topic area of sport is often one of concern for many debaters, but we managed to achieve some great results with the 7A, 7B, 8B, 9A, 10B, 4ths, 2nds and 1sts all winning. The 1st grade team managed to get their season off to a great start, negating the rather unexpected topic "that high earning athletes should pay a special tax to fund the development of sport" that tested our ability to recall (and at some points make up) examples of highly paid athletes in Australia. It was great to see a large crowd watching us (including some junior debaters), and it would be great if we could repeat that next week in our first home debate against Ignatius!

Term 3 Ensemble Rehearsal Timetables

There have been a couple of adjustments for ensemble rehearsal times in Term 3. Please check the timetable and arrive ON TIME! There are NO EXCUSES for not attending or arriving late to ensemble rehearsals. ALL ENSEMBLES START AT 7:45AM.

Remember a ROLL is TAKEN, and 80% of ATTENDANCE is required. PLEASE REMEMBER to pack up after rehearsals (tidy up the room/and stands back on rack). EVERYONE needs to help and not left to one or two boys. THANK YOU boys for your co-operation!

First GPS game – High vs. Newington

The first GPS game proved successful for all teams who played Newington College. The 1st XV started their GPS season very well with a 19-7 victory over Newington 3rd XV. The success of all Senior grades gave confidence to the Rugby program and the crowd support for the 1st XV saw them lift to see two unanswered second half tries, courtesy of Jasper Garay.

Last Saturday the 13Cs had a comfortable win against TSC 13Is. There were many highlights including the devastating running and try scoring ability of the experienced players Corey Won, Lucas Wong and Daniel Wang. These boys showed the team the way forward.

Other pleasing aspects for me were:

• the solid lineout wins by Hamza Mulla, Matthew Whitaker and Daniel Wang;
• the quick and accurate passing of halfback Raymond Huang which kept Scots on the back foot;
• and the hard running and strong tackling of the newcomers, Eric Shen and Harry Yio.

Congratulations to all players for a great start to the GPS season. Now the challenge for us is to play the same way against 13H and 13G teams.

On Saturday 26th July the 14A and 14B volleyball teams played against each other. The first game was extremely close, but in the end it was the 14As who won marginally with a score of 26-24, an unfortunate loss for the 14Bs. In the next game, the 14As won yet again and were the winners of the day. Both teams put in a huge amount of effort but there could only be one winner. Congratulations to the 14As.

Cyber Seminar

Rachel Powell, Head of History at Sydney Boys is organising a seminar for parents presented by Cyber expert Robyn Rishani on Thursday August 30. The presentation will be held in the Great Hall starting at 6:30pm.

Robyn’s presentation is aimed at helping parents understand the cyber world that our sons inhabit and will address issues such as, alternate online identities; cyber bullying; gaming addiction and its prevention; online security and parental monitoring. These are live issues for many school families and we strongly recommend it to all parents.
