From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications. Notice to All ParentsIt is the parent responsibility to notify the Front Office First Aid Staff if your son has a medical condition which requires medication. All medication such as Epipen’s need to be clearly marked with your son’s name and have a current expiry date. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Sydney Boys High School Drama FestivalJuly 17 - 19 2012Dear Parent/Caregiver, This term in Drama students have been learning many skills in Physical Theatre, Playbuilding, Text Interpretation and Characterisation. As part of their assessment boys are required to devise and present an original piece of theatre to the class. Students will then be selected to perform in the school’s Drama Festival held in Week 1, Term 3. This is our third Drama Festival and it has become an exciting annual event on the school calendar. The festival will include performances by students from Years 7 – 12. In order to prepare for this large scale production participating students MUST ATTEND both technical and dress rehearsals in The Great Hall. Students will need to bring a packed lunch and water bottle. Please note students are to organise their own costumes, sound effects and personal props. The technical rehearsal will be held on Tuesday 17July from periods 3 – 6 and after school up to 5:00pm. There will be a full dress rehearsal during periods 1 - 2 on Wednesday 18 July. Students will perform in the School Matinee for all of Years 7 and 8 on Wednesday 18 July, periods 3 & 4, and then return to normal classes. A showcase will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:00pm. Performers and crew are to arrive promptly at 5:45pm with a plate for supper (biscuits, cake, sandwiches, etc.) Tickets can be pre-purchased at the front office at a cost of $5 for students, $10 for adults and $25 for families. Limited tickets will also be available at the door on the night. There will be another School Matinee on Thursday 19 July, during periods 3 & 4, for Year 9 and 10. Students will then be required to help with the Bump-Out and return to class. Participants are eligible for Award Scheme Points and will be recognised for their commitment at Assembly. This promises to be a fun, lively and highly entertaining event. Your support and attendance is greatly appreciated. Our guest speaker, Anna Liu, provided an entertaining and interesting presentation addressing a number of issues relevant to our schools’ parent bodies. Anna spoke particularly to the issue of coaching, offering her own perspective on its efficacy and impact on teenage development. Once again, thank you to all those parents who attended the Meeting on a cold winter’s night. Unfortunately, the turnout was somewhat disappointing and the P&C would be most interested in feedback from parents as to the issues that may be preventing their attendance at the P&C General Meetings. Regional Cross Country CarnivalThis year’s Regional Cross Country Carnival, as in other years, was a challenging event for High being much more difficult than the Zone Carnival, due to a much harder course and High boys being pitted against the top 10 competitors from other Zone Carnivals. The result was an overall more challenging race against stronger and faster competitors, of whom only the top six in each age group would make it to the next stage; the State All Schools Cross Country Carnival. Following three weeks of continuous rain, we were lucky to be able to have the carnival on a day when the rain had ceased, unlike the Zone Carnival, which had ended up with competitors running in increasingly heavier rain from the 16s onwards. However, the three weeks of downpour had taken its toll on the course, and runners arrived to find the ground underfoot soaked like a sponge, making it slippery and muddy, despite the fact that the sun had come out. The race course itself was 4km of muddy pits, puddles and grass for the 12yrs races up to the 15yrs. Despite this, the runners ignored the terrible conditions of the course during their race, pushing on through the mud as to make efforts to avoid it would have slowed them down and were ineffective anyway. This resulted in many of our runners returning from their race both completely exhausted and covered with mud from the waist down. Luckily, runners were required to wear a borrowed Zone singlet, which was one part of their racing gear that they wouldn’t have to worry about splashing mud on during the race. The races themselves were delayed by as much as half an hour as the day wore on. In the 16yrs race, the standard for making it into the State Carnival was increased when we were informed a runner had already been selected based on his time alone, resulting in only the top five from this race moving on to the next level. By the time the race started, the course had already been reduced to almost purely mud and puddles due to all the other runners from previous races running over it. The 16yrs race was an extra 2 km this time, with runners having to run 6 km compared to the 4 km they ran at Zone. Both Ned Anson and I managed to make the top 10. I finished 7th and special mention to Ned who pushed himself in the last lap to oust another runner and manage to steal 5th place at the last second, winning his way to the State Carnival and defeating a regular state competitor who dropped to 6th place.
High did extremely well in the 17s and Opens races, with Vincent Ye placing 7th in the 17yrs race
and Jonathon Clements-Lendrum winning it for High. As a result High will field the School Team in
the 17yrs race at the State All Schools Carnival. Adam Booth ran a strong race to finish 4th in
the 18+yrs race. Congratulations to all other boys from High who turned up that day to compete
and pushed their hardest, despite the terrible conditions of the course, and to those runners who
qualified for the State Carnival, good luck and run your best.
Volleyball NotesSBHS Junior Tournament
On Saturday 23rd June SBHS Junior Volleyball competed in two closely contested divisions. In the
Year 7/8 division the 14A, 14B and 15C teams played off against each other. The Year 7 teams
proved enthusiastic competitors in their first tournament and played with convincing spirit. The
14A and 14B teams have been very close in training. The 14Bs finished on top at the Tournament.
In the Year 8/9 division the 15A, 16A and 16B teams competed in a round robin competition. The
Year 10 Coaches provided excellent guidance for their teams.
