High Talent
In the National Geography Competition, Thomas Nguyen (Year 8) won a prize for 2nd in NSW and 3rd in Australia. Great result, Thomas! Congratulations to Christian Jurlina (Year 12) who was selected in the NSW All Schools basketball team and to Geoff Gerlach (Year 11) who has been selected to play in the Under 18 Australian 3x3 Basketball Championship. Well done to Tom Hughes (Year 11) on his selection in the AIS 26 member touring squad to play rugby league in France, England and Wales at the end of the year. At the Sydney Eisteddfod, our strings ensemble won second prize. Our players were: Toby Funston, Richard Hao, Ken Li, Sagar Nagaraj Justin Ng, Jaan Pallandi, William Tam, Tin Lok Wu, Thomas Zhang, Jonathan Zheng, Frank Zhang and Jaspar McCahon-Boermsa. Congratulations to all concerned!

Prefects Recognition Assembly
The Internship policy at High places responsibility on elected leaders to walk the talk promised in their Prefects pledges and carry out their duties faithfully for three terms. Towards the end of term 2 each year we hold an assembly to present them with their Prefects badges to keep and recover their Internee Prefect badges. This year I am pleased to report that all Internees have earned their badges in performing their duties and representing the school. They received their badges and signed the Prefects Book at the assembly last Thursday. In addition, the prospective Prefects for 2012-13 were informed about the qualification and election process.

Cyber Management Committee
Ms Powell has convened two meetings of a Cyber Management Committee. This High initiative is designed to produce a policy to guide students, parents and teachers in their interactions with the internet, the web and the cloud. The group has canvassed the risks associated with excessive or unsafe use of the internet and established a need for the school to respond to the risks and to raise awareness among the school community of them. The major threats appear to be excessive social networking, gaming addiction, cyber bullying and inappropriate social contact. Apart from raising awareness and empowering students to take responsibility for their internet use, it is hoped that the Cyber Management Committee can play a role in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of students’ research efforts and content creation by offering suggestions and tips on how to access tools online. Smart phones are also highly favoured by students and the Committee will discuss the positive and negative impacts of widespread use of smart phones at school and at home.

Proud Schools update
At a recent meeting involving representatives from DEC, the Proud Schools Pilot team, NSW Police, students, staff and parents, recent developments in training were discussed. A training module for teachers has not yet been fully developed but the Police training module appears quite a useful model to modify for the school context. Our Proud Schools team is committed to raising the issue of feeling safe and accepted at school as a key determinant of academic progress and personal development. Even though the percentage of students affected by mental illness, debilitating medical conditions or sexual identity issues is not large, the effects on those students arising from discrimination, bullying or harassment are very significant and damaging. It is a responsibility of all of us to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students and staff. . Many teachers feel somewhat confronted by issues surrounding mental illness, physical disability, same sex attraction and gender questioning and do not have the training to assist peers or students who are struggling with the social effects of these individual differences. Our first priority is to train teachers, then student leaders. Our key target is discourse. We are asking staff and students to become more sensitive and respectful about the language they use, in the classroom or the playground, irrespective of the intent of their utterances.

Boys with outstanding commitments on their clearance Form are asked to get them cleared and book in for their appointment with the Principal. With Parent–Teacher evenings fast approaching, parents need to know how their sons are progressing at school.

Booking interviews with your son’s teachers

This year we will again use a web based electronic scheduling system for arranging interviews. This produces better results for all participants, especially more compact time schedules for both parents and teachers. The system works as follows –

• On Thursday 7 June all parents of boys in Years 9 and 12 were sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at .
• On Tuesday 12 June all parents of boys in Year 7 and 11 will be sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at
• On Tuesday 19 June all parents of boys in Years 8 and 10 will be sent by email details of the scheduling system and a unique code to be entered at  

 

• This email will be sent to the address currently held by the school. If you have not received this email by the following day (8, 13 or 20 June) or, if your email address has changed from what had been previously advised to the school, you should notify the school at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it advising of this. Please indicate your son's name and roll class or date of birth so that the information can be forwarded to you.
• On the Edval website you will see your son’s teachers listed and you will be able to select those with whom you require an interview. (If you hover over a teacher’s name, the subject involved will be shown.) At the same time you can indicate your availability between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
• Once the majority of parents have requested interviews, the overall schedule will be generated by the school and your individual schedule should be available for you to download and print from two days before the interviews.
• Boys from all Years will be dismissed from class at the conclusion of Period 5 on each day. School Special buses will run to normal schedules and there will be supervision in the Junior Quad of boys waiting for these buses.
• Interviews should not exceed five minutes’ duration. If there is insufficient time, a further appointment may be made for a later date, or contact by telephone arranged.

Emma Kauter – my prac student from the UNSW – has found the correct answer. Yes – it is a helicopter – or Hubschrauber in German, but there had to be a German connection. The engineer Henrich Focke demonstrated the first fully fledged helicopter in 1936 in Berlin. A chocolate bar for Emma!

MIC Report

Many congratulations to Christopher Chiam, Julian Edgtton and Robert Sternhell who won the Sydney South East Barbour Debating competition. We have retained this trophy for the third year running. Our Year 12 team will now go into an inter-region knock out and we are all hoping they reach the Final which will be held at Sydney Uni on 3rd August. There will be limited tickets to watch this debate. In order to obtain one you must see me when I announce it in the Mango Sheet.

This week I am pleased to start announcing the GPS and PDC teams. This week it’s Year 7. Congratulations to all of those of you who tried out. The coaches were extremely impressed with the quality of debating this year. For those of you who didn’t make it – two of our coaches, who made First Grade in Year 12 were not picked for GPS in Year 7. You must not be too disappointed and use the rest of the coaching season to develop your skills further.

Debating Prefect Report

Last Friday for the regional final of the Hume Barbour Premier's Debating Challenge our Year 12 team took on Fort Street to defend our Sydney Region Champions title for the third year in a row. Given the affirmative of the topic "that invasion is justifiable in cases of extreme human rights abuses" we put together one of our most complete performances so far to win at Parliament House. The team of Robert Sternhell, Julian Edgtton, Nicky Pinidiya and myself now move on to the inter regional stage where the top ten teams from across the state compete in the finals series. Thanks to Mr Webb for accompanying us on the day, Dom (our coach) for not only coaching us very well but also coming to watch on the day and the supporters; it's always very comforting to see a strong crowd from High even at away debates.

Theatre Society

This year marks the birth of the Sydney Boys High School Theatre Society.

Thank you to those boys who have already joined. There are still a handful of places left for any boy in Years 10 -12 who is interested in participating.

As a member of this group, you will be invited to attend a number of performances within the year at various theatre companies, including

• Sydney Theatre Company
• Belvoir Street
• Griffin Theatre Company

Why become a member?
All students need to study plays as part of their English HSC coursework, and this is a great way to come to understand theatre forms and conventions, as well as how directors interpret, adapt and subvert a playwright’s dialogue into that of a realised production. As a member of the Theatre Society, you will see a collection of plays in a variety of theatres, in a range of genres and performance styles – a perfect supplement to your English and Drama studies.

To become a member, there is an annual registration fee of $10, along with the cost of each theatre ticket (usually at a specially reduced rate). The first play to see is the American classic Death of a Salesman at Belvoir Street. The booking is for Tuesday, 31st July at 6.30pm. The cost of this performance is $42 payable to the front office by Monday 18th June, 2012.

Educational Access Scheme 2013

Most institutions that participate in the University Admissions Centre (UAC) have an Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for applicants who have experienced long term educational disadvantage. To qualify applicants must demonstrate that their educational performance during Years 11 and 12 or equivalent has been seriously affected by circumstances beyond their choice or control.

Students applying for Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for Universities in 2013 will need to download their booklets and application forms from the website:  

If you require a Statement of Support from the school counsellors, your EAS form will need to be in to them with all required documentation by beginning of week 8, term 3 (or before if possible). The responsibility for sending the finalised application to UAC by closing date at end of September 2012 rests with the individual student.

Sydney Youth Orchestra: Looking at the Stars

LOOKING AT THE STARS was the title of the concert performed by the Sydney Youth Orchestra on Sunday, June 3. A good friend of mine had invited me to go to the concert with her. On a rain sodden afternoon this was my first visit to The Concourse in Chatswood. Apart from the fact that it is a lot closer to home than the Opera House or the Recital Hall it is great venue. We took our places and the orchestra started the programme with Sibelius’ Symphony No 1. The applause following this was very well deserved – they had been magnificent. When the orchestra stood up to bow to the audience I noticed a familiar figure. Excitedly I told my friend that I had spotted one of my students. The concert was excellent and I hope that Ennes forgave me the cardinal sin (which usually only parents commit) of giving him a little wave from the balcony.

Amateur Blitz Chess Championship

After a marathon blitz chess effort over recess and lunchtime for three days, involving 35 participants, we had the classic standoff between a Senior and a Junior in the Amateur (Chess Competition players not allowed to compete) Blitz Chess Competition. The result was a draw between James Chen in 11S and Ryan Chan in 8M. The boys elected to take a box of chocolates for their mother as a prize. Congratulations to both boys who concentrated under difficult conditions in the Library.

Big thanks to William Chan, our library Prefect who oversaw the whole completion and Hubert Suen - Year 12 - who organised the competition posters. Big thanks also to Alan Shi Year 10, Gordon Qian Year 10 and Pete Upatising Year 10, Chess Competition players, who judged and organised the competition and to Ms Barr who loaned us the clocks, boards and pieces.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave

If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

The Principal must approve all leave applications.

What’s Up in the Senior Library?

Senior Library opening hours extended!

Seniors, your student voice has been heard! Starting from the beginning of next term the Senior Library will open longer and will now be available on Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons in Period 6 for the benefit of those who wish to utilise it for study and or research.

Mrs Crothers has generously offered to provide support and supervision during these times. This will be a trial to see how well the library is used. Any student using the library will be expected to maintain an atmosphere conducive to study.

Much has changed in the Senior Library since it started and this is mainly due to input from students recording their opinions and ideas when responding to our survey last year. This year we will also be running another survey so that once again we can gather feedback regarding the Senior Library, its services and possible future developments. So watch out in Moodle for a chance to once again voice your opinion!

SBHS and SGHS Joint P&C Meeting - Wednesday 20 June 7:30pm

A reminder to all parents that next Wednesday night the annual Sydney Girls and Sydney Boys Joint P&C Meeting will be held in the Great Hall at 7:30pm.

It is our school’s turn to host the event this year at which Anna Liu, a social worker, director of PARENTCALM, and mother of two school age children will be giving a presentation on the challenges facing migrant parents and their interaction with the Australian education system. Anna is a social worker who runs the Chinese Family Education Project in Mandarin for Family Services in the St George area and is an expert in bridging the gap between Chinese parenting cultural practices and education in Australian. If you have a Chinese background, grew up in another country, or are just interested in parenting, this should be a fascinating and informative topic.

The presentation should take approximately 30-45 minutes and will be accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation in Mandarin. The presentation will be followed up by a Q&A session and parents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to have their issues or concerns addressed. Sydney Boys High parent volunteers will be serving a light supper on the night, starting at 7:15pm. We look forward to your attendance.

Canteen is in desperate need of at least two volunteers for every1st Wednesday and every 1st Thursday of the month… as we have had a few mums drop out due to different work commitments. If you can help on a regular basis or only now and then please call Karen or Tracey on 9360 4027. Your son will love to see you in the canteen!

Parking is available in the school grounds for volunteers at the Cleveland St carpark or the Anzac Parade carpark. If you have any difficulty please call the canteen and they will tell you where to park.

Volleyball Report

First Grade Tournament

Report On the 25th of May, the first grade team represented Sydney High in the year’s first Schools Cup which was held at Sydney Olympic Park. Following our success in the CHS regional competition, our First Grade side was confident entering the sports centre. As in previous years, the tournament was expected to be tough and with one goal in mind we were set on winning the schools cup once again. With the tournament featuring many of the State’s best sides, winning the gold medal was no easy task and the early start did not help either. With a game at 9.00am followed by a chain of games and duties the team had minimum time to rest up. Despite this, the performance of many of our players did not falter. Our second game against the State’s CHS team was one that was definitely celebrated and being the only team to defeat them, it was a game that undoubtedly presented our potential and dominance in the tournament. Westfields was another team who presented a challenge in the semi finals. The Westfields line up had great scrambling, spiking and serves and without the solid blocks of Ivor and the powerful spikes from Jonathan, Harry, Arash and Aman the game would have been very difficult. However, in the end the First Grade side came out with the win and eventually made it to finals. Due to the shortage of time, the final game against Kelso (last year’s CHS knockout champions) was cut back to two sets with Sydney Boys winning both and taking the gold medal. The Friday tournament was a great success due to teamwork of the first grade side and the support from Mr Kay and Ms Trompetter.

Third Grade Tournament Report

On Friday the 25th of May SBHS’ 3rd grade team travelled to Olympic Park for the All Schools Tournament. Made up of players from Years ten, eleven and twelve and having only been formed in the couple of weeks leading up to the event, we weren’t expecting to beat any world records, but we were confident that we would do well regardless. We lost our first game against Westfields Sports High, although we didn’t let it get to us and in our second game against Baulkham Hills we won the first set 25-23 and the buzzer was called at the second set, while they were up by three points at 19-22. Interpreting this as a win for us, we went on to beat Dungog two sets to nil and were looking forward to being placed 2nd in our heat. Unfortunately for us, though, our second set against Baulkham Hills the previous match was given to them due to their point lead, leaving the set scores at 1-1 and with them being one point up, meaning they got 2nd place. We placed 3rd in our heat and went on to play the CHS team in the next round, where we were unsurprisingly knocked out in straight sets. However for a newly created team and having just started the volleyball season I can honestly say congratulations to the guys and well done; other than a few silly errors here and there we played really well.

Rifle Shooting

Having just competed against Armidale the weekend before, the 探花视频 Rifle Team are once again out to compete in the annual Wingham Rifle Club Open Prize Meeting over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The SHSRC members consisted of Yujin Wu (12, c), Dominic Tran (11, vc), Jacky Yang (12), Bill Deng (11), Timothy Chew (11), Wilbert Wu (11), Jeremy Chan (10), Minghao Wu (10), Evan Han (9), Jack Zhou (9) and Timothy Tran (9), with Desmond Chiang (9) coming along to learn about the workings of a fullbore competition.

Arriving at the range at dusk, we were quick to set up camp, taken aback by the country cold air. Despite warnings of the typical rainstorm, we were surprisingly met with clear bright skies the next day. The team were confronted with some extremely strong competition this year, including members of The Armidale and New England Girls School. There were some excellent results posted for the first day of shooting, especially from those who’ve never shot at an Opens competition before.

Standouts on the day include a 48.1 by Jeremy, 49.6 by Yujin, and 48.2 by Timothy, which placed them 1st in C Grade 300 yards, 2nd in B Grade 600 yards and 3rd in C Grade for 600 yards respectively. As a result, Jeremy won some frying pans, and Yujin picked up 3rd place at day 1 aggregate. Well done also to Dom who scored a 48.2 and 47.2 at 500m and 300m, as well as Minghao who shot 48.1 at 500m. Jack Zhou posted a solid 46.2 despite being his first ever prize meeting. Well done!

After the day’s shooting, it was time to relax and enjoy ourselves, with the Wingham Rifle Club providing boomerang throwing lessons, trivia and karaoke for that night. We boldly yet subtly entertained the clubhouse with our singing, which introduced Sydney High as the stars of the night!

Day two of the prize meet saw an improvement to shooting overall, with six of our shooters scoring better than day 1. In particular, Dominic Tran improved from a 122.3 on day 1 to 133.4 on day 2, and Evan Han improved from 105.2 to 121.4. Congratulations to Jeremy Chan who shot very well on the second and third ranges (500m then 600m), scoring 49.3 and 49.2, and also claiming 2nd place for the 600m range. However having only 44.2 on the first 300m range, Jeremy narrowly missed out on a day aggregate badge.

At the prize presentation, Jeremy Chan collected his 600m range badge, and Yujin Wu collected a grand aggregate 4th place badge. The presentation concluded with another delicious dinner by the caterers at Wingham.

Our yearly campfire with the members of the TAS rifle team concluded the trip. Stories were told over roasted marshmallows, scones on a stick and spuds, and some music was shared. Unfortunately, the time came for us to return to our tents for the last night at Wingham. To mark another memorable trip, the rain finally came.

Thanks to the Wingham Rifle Club for hosting their prize meeting this year. Thanks must also go to MIC of shooting Ms Meaney, and Coaches Justin Hill and Sam Kremer for giving up their entire long weekend to support us throughout the trip. Thanks also to Kevin Chan, Brendan Leo and Joe Banh who also came to support us! Altogether, the team learnt many valuable lessons about shooting and the tradition at Wingham.

Sydney East 7s
On Friday 8th of June the 14s and 16s teams competed in the Sydney East 7s tournament. The 16s team proved too strong for their opposition and won. The 14s team were unlucky as they lost the competition on a count back.

A big thanks to High parents, Mr Lin (father of Peter Year 8) and Mr Nguyen (father of Justis Year 8) for braving the bad weather on Sunday of the recent long week end for parking duty to help raise funds for Tennis. Many thanks also to Dr Yvette Hauser (mother of Michael Year 10). It’s such an effort beyond the call of duty that help makes High such a great place!
