Junior Library Amateur Chess Competition
Semi-finalists were: Johnson Lin – Year 7, Jemmy Ma - Year 8, Kit Man Cheng – Year
12, Andy Ho - Year 12 The final which was played by Andy Ho and Kit Man Cheng was won by Kit Man Cheng The Year 12 boys were battling the Junior boys to retain their supremacy and many of the wins were from the clock and not the board. Congratulations to those boys. Well done also to all the entrants who all demonstrated their ability at the game. Come back next year and win. The winners were decided after 8/9 gruelling back to back rounds every recess and lunchtime since last Friday. This competition was designed to give the boys who do not play chess competitively for High a bit of fun with blitz chess. It proved just as popular this year as in past years with 64 entrants (many of them Year 12s competing for the last time). Everyone noticed how involved and serious the players were. The enjoyment was quite riveting.
The competition was played with clocks and was administered by our trusty Library Prefect –
Tim Chan and his Chess expert organisers Anthony Xu and Darwin Shi. Thanks also to Mr Harvey and
the Chess team who uncomplainingly loan out chess boards, clocks and competition players who have
also judged non-stop – eating on the job every recess and lunchtime to complete this long
exercise.
What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library?Library borrowing in the McDonald Library is increasing as students realise that this is now a fully functioning library and that there are many new titles to choose from. We continue to transfer appropriate senior resources from the Andrews library and although limited this year our budget has allowed us to purchase some quality fiction and non-fiction to keep the collection growing and increasing in usefulness to students. Some new books added this term include:
Fiction When Courage Came to Call by LM Fuge – Imm lives on the island of Zamascus and when war comes to his homeland he has to use all his resources to survive. This is another thriller and fast paced read that will keep you reading late into the night! It “grips you right from the first page, exploring the horrors of war and the cost of courage.” (from Readings bookstore website) Spinner: a novel by Ron Elliot – a great story for all cricket lovers about a young boy with an amazing gift and his promise to a dying man.
Non Fiction World Cricket Records 2011 – of interest to cricket fans of which there are many here at SBHS.

Peer Mediation at SBHSHey got a problem? Get peer mediated! Peer mediation is a program run by a select group of Year 11 students which seeks to solve conflict between students without getting teachers involved. The program seeks to help the students resolve their issues while under the guidance of the Year 11 students. The program is confidential and stays between the peer mediators (Year 11 students) and the students who have a problem with each other.

appoint two Peer Mediators to accompany the disputers in a closed off room, whereby the two

SBHS DebatingParents Information EveningThe Debating Supporters Group is holding a meeting at 6.30pm on Thursday 7th April. The purpose of this meeting is to inform parents about the Debating Program at High. It is also an opportunity for parents to meet other parents of debaters and for you to be able to ask any questions you may have to members of the DSG or to me. Please come along and show your support for your sons who are debating. Eastside
The final round of the regular Eastside season saw High hosting SCEGGS Darlinghurst. Our junior
teams performed solidly, Years 7 and 9 claiming wins, and the Year 8s falling to a very strong
undefeated SCEGGS side. Our seniors, debating the omnipresent topic of adopting nuclear power had
more mixed results; our 10s and 11s falling, while the Year 12s continued their undefeated run.
With two wins each, our Year 7s to 10s will need other results to fall our way to make the
semi-finals, while the two most senior teams can look forward to finals debating early next term.
It was again good to see substantial support from students and parents, both at the senior
debates, and in supplying the supper table. FED
With a couple of extra socials on the card the FED round against Newington again proved to be a
solid night of debating. While we saw success in the 8s, 9s (social) and the remaining teams,
apart from the Year 11s who won, fought valiantly to be narrowly defeated. With Newington again
proving to be increasingly tough competition it is certainly shaping up to be a competitive GPS
season. Termly Round-UpI would like to take this opportunity to thank the coaches for their hard work this term; the parents who have organised supper, watched debates and paid their co-payments already and to the boys who have been well behaved, enthusiastic debaters - especially those who have represented High in the competitions.
In particular I want to thank Dana Quick who has been guiding me through my first term as
Debating Coordinator. Her thorough preparation and useful advice has been invaluable. Thank you
so much Dana. I hope we have you around for a few more weeks next term.

Year 9 Old Boy Research Competition - 2011English/History Faculties
First Prize - $100 This competition aims to acknowledge the role of the Old Boys if Sydney Boys High who have served their country. This could be in any theatre of war. Year 9 students are invited to submit a 500 word essay acknowledging the service of any Sydney High Old Boy. Submissions should recount the serviceman's war experience and discuss how this service reflects one of the following themes of sacrifice, loyalty, tradition or pride in being Australia. Entries should be on A4, double-spaced and 12pt. year 9 students will have the opportunity to present their research from the War 探花视频 in Canberra as well as any other research opportunities that are available. All references should be acknowledged. The winning submissions will be entered in the "Australia My Country" competition with the Returned And Services League of Australia during Term 2 with the aim of building a relationship between the local school community and the RSL sub-branch.

Big Brother Spreads Wings The boys conducted themselves in a way befitting students from Sydney Boys. Both boys were polite and courteous at all times and took an active role in all class activities. Their presentation and informal discussion with the boys attending Selective High school in 2011 was most informative and was delivered in a positive manner. Both students participated in activities both with 5/6F and other Year 6 classes. It was a pleasure to have both boys visit. They were outstanding examples of the calibre of student that I have come to expect from Sydney Boys High School.
High Success with High Resolves You are probably aware of the outpouring of positive responses that the 2010 High Resolves group have had over the weekend to their Gender Equality project from last year. Girl Effect posted the clip to their Facebook page, which went out to over a quarter of a million subscribers. Their clip has now had over 5000 hits on YouTube, from all over the world.

Steep Learning Curves This website also contains a link for parents. The material in the planners was written by an experienced teacher and father of three sons and the aim is to empower parents to make a contribution to their child’s education. Parents are encouraged to look closely at the website and the monthly newsletters in which they will find very useful ideas and topics for ongoing family discussion. Later in the year we will be running a competition for students who would like to create a suitable cover for the 2012 planners. This year we have used our pride in our school environment as the focus for the 2011 covers.

Julie Connolly BIG NIGHT OUT – Fantastic Turnout and Thank YouWhat a terrific night was had by all who came to Big Night Out – thank you for your support of this P&C and school family event. Congratulations to the raffle, bingo and heads & tails winners and our sincerest thank you to all the people who donated prizes for the raffle and games. Thank you to all the marvelous entertainers - The Music Department organised the Jazz ensemble and String orchestra. The Henna Tattoo artist has agreed already to return next year. The Napur dance troupe where sensational with three Bollywood numbers and of course Ali and Alex – the stilt walking musicians - where greatly admired. The Icebergs played the night out and sounded fantastic! Good luck to these talented ex-students for their future music careers. In the end we had pre-sold over 210 tickets and approximately 70 tickets were sold at the door – thank you High Family! Congratulations to the History Faculty for the most number of staff attendees. Thank you to the staff of High, who have been involved in very many ways with the organisation of Big Night Out. The Library staff for printing of posters and tickets, the general office for selling and laminating of tickets and all the admin that goes with this, those who lent us BBQs and moved things around and cleaned up the school – thank you. Thank you to Richard James – P&C treasurer – for keeping the finances and cash flow well organised. We grossed over $6,500.00 for the night but the whole point of Big Night Out is to come together as a High community and share our many different heritages through a wide variety of food and entertainment. It was terrific to see so many people involved who do not always have the opportunity to play a role in contributing to the P&C and the school for the benefit of all the boys. Most of all, congratulations and biggest “Thank You”s to our Big Night Team who excelled themselves in their preparation and presentation of our dinner: Sachiyo James coordinated entrees; Min Wang, Keshani Radhakrishnan (with a boy no longer at school !), Geoff Waring and Soogie Sim coordinated main courses; Susan Adams coordinated desserts; Andrew Kirk soft drinks; Chris Andrews (Old Boy Class of 2008) the bar; Nina Liu tea and coffee. And behind these people where teams of fantastic cooks and organisers – rice paper rollers, cake bakers, rice cookers, BBQers, vegetable preparers, curry chefs and so on. Thank you to everyone. Again, it was great to have so many different parents involved in different ways right across the school family, with the common purpose of helping our boys. Speaking of boys - our prefects excelled in the selling of raffle tickets and bingo cards. Cameron Morrison was fantastic calling the Head & Tails game. Shuming, Eric and Sangeeth – and others ! Where terrific calling bingo particularly Shuming with his numbers from 1 to 90 in Mandarin – thank you for being part of the night. Thank you to Charles Ovadia who helped establish this event and in his final year as a parent is always supportive. GPS Head of the River – Saturday 2nd April, Penrith
Rifle ShootingRifle Shooting finished it’s Summer season with a Smallbore Competition, a Fullbore Competition and a celebratory BBQ on the 26th March 2011. The Smallbore competition was very well supported with 34 students competing. Daryl FONG Year 11 was the overall winner shooting with a sling. Newton LE Year 8 won the section shooting with a stand. Congratulations to both boys. High were the winners of the Fullbore competition against Scots under difficult weather conditions. The day was a great success with thanks going to the parent helpers and Old Boys. We hope to hold a competition day once every term.
Shooting’s winter season will commence on Saturday 30th April 2011.

High Regatta Results The day started very early, in the dark, setting up the barbecue/catering area at Bayview Park, and on the water placing buoys for the course. Particular thanks to Anita Bezjak, and the committee, for coordinating the logistics, formulating a roster, and rallying the troops for the catering. Thanks also to old boys, Chris Watson, Con Barris, Dave Luscombe, David Blomberg, Dom Grimm, Shahar Merom, Gareth Deacon and Pat Desmond, and past parents Barry Schilling and Katharine Deacon for helping with the regatta. Our best performances of the day went to our Year 9 3rd Quad, coming 3rd to Riverview and Newington – Brendan Kong, Kohen Lau, Byron Zhou, Chris Wang, (c) Joseph Tang, and the Year 9 1st Quad also coming 3rd to Riverview and Newington, beating Kings well – Brendan Guan, Rex Yi, Andrew Zhang, Steve Comninos, (c) Josh Lane. Saturday 2nd April Races start at 10.00am with the Year 10 Eights. The School Eights race at 11.35 and 11.50 am. It is all over by 12 noon. This is the big day on the GPS school calendar and is quite a spectacle with all GPS schools attending. We have our own decorated marquee with the School Stage Band playing, so put on the blue and brown and come and cheer! All rowing parents are invited back to the sheds for a presentation at approximately 3.00pm to thank everyone involved in the season – coaches, staff, committee, parents and the boys. Combined GPS Team SelectionCongratulation to the following boys who were selected for the combined GPS basketball teams! The trials were held on Monday & the quality of the teams reflects how difficult it is to be selected: Andrija Dumovic, Christian Jurlina and Craig Moller, were all selected in GPS 1sts. The others did not try out due to State Basketball clashes. 1st Grade Ladder
Although we unfortunately lost on the weekend to Newington, High still tied for the premiership with Scots and Newington, and was 1st on points differential, the best result for the school since 1994 in the GPS. Adding our first National Championships and Raschke Cup victories means that this is the most successful season for High basketball ever, hopefully with many more to come. Congratulations to all involved in the basketball program, particularly players from the 1st and 2nd grade team for producing some phenomenal results. The Editor’s Experience by David Li WangThis issue of Shootin’ Hoops will be the final issue that I’ll be writing and so I would like to share some of my experiences of High Basketball. Back in 2006 during my first season, I played for 13Es and was coached by Mr Baldock and like the majority of 13s teams, we lost every single game, but did come close to winning a match. When I played in the 14s Ms Ward was my coach and early on in that season I experienced my first win and a few more followed in that season. In the following season I captained the 15Es, once again coached by Ms Ward and we experienced quite a successful season as our team was quite a potent one, often winning against the Ds and Cs during training sessions. That season will remain as some of the best memories of my time at High, not only because it was the best in terms of my individual performance and our team’s success, but because I was in a team with some of my closest friends and we enjoyed every moment of basketball that we played and because of the competition and enjoyment factor, we were able to lift our games to another level. In the 08/09 season I became the full-time editor of Shootin’ Hoops taking over from Johny Shih. I was picked in the 16Cs and coached by Joel Richards, and although the season wasn’t as successful as the previous season, we learnt a lot as basketballers. As I moved into the Opens division, I returned to playing under my old coach Mr Baldock in 8th Grade. In 09/10 we were the only Year 11s playing in the 8th Grade comp and so needless to say we were unable to defeat some of the more experienced Year 12s in the other GPS schools. However in this 10/11 season, 8th Grade assured Mr Baldock that we would have an incredibly successful season. We set out to win every game but unfortunately due to injuries, we were only able to field 7 players against an Iggy’s 15 man team, narrowly losing that game, finishing the season with 12/13 wins and 2/2 wins against the 1st and 2nd Grade teams of Alexandria Park. I can honestly say I’ve had no regrets during my time with High Basketball, and like myself, I strongly encourage you all to get more involved either through doing scoring on the weekends or supporting 1sts and 2nds on the weekends. High Basketball has truly blossomed in recent years, evident from the exponential growth of accolades and the work Mr B Hayman has done has been phenomenal. I wish High Basketball all the best in the years to come and hope we can continue the legacy of playing hard, playing smart and playing together. Highlights of the 2010/2011 Season
Thank You!A huge thank you to everyone who turned up at the Newington match on Saturday. It is estimated that about 400 students, parents and supporters of High basketball were present at the final game of the season. Although it is unfortunate we didn’t win, your support made the final game a memorable one for all involved. As well as this thank you to everyone who came to watch 1st grade matches during the season. The extra effort you put in certainly went a long way to make the basketball program as successful as it was. The parents of all the players who have supported their sons, must all be thanked, in addition to those parents who have helped out at the Basketball canteen on Saturdays. To all the players who turned up for your matches and training every week: congratulations on choosing the best sport in the school and for your improvement every week. It is very pleasing to see a remarkable improvement from week to week, especially within our junior teams! Last but certainly not least, thank you to Mr Ben Hayman for his dedication and impressive hard work which has made this all possible! GO HIGH BASKETBALL!
Athletics 2011Information for Athletes and their ParentsPLEASE NOTE THAT THE 1500m RACE STARTS AT 8.15AM I would like to warmly welcome all athletes, new and old, and their families to the 2011 season. Sydney Boys High School offers boys the opportunity to compete in the prestigious GPS Athletics competition. The GPS Athletic season is run in the last four weeks of Term 3. The season culminates in the AAGPS Athletics carnival held at Homebush. Here the nine GPS schools compete against each other in two different age divisions (senior and junior). Boys from each Year group represent Sydney Boys in these divisions. They compete in front of nearly 10,000 spectators. The nature of GPS Athletic competition is team oriented with a points system designed to reward a good all round performance from a team rather than one strong individual performance. The coaching staff stresses the importance of this aspect of the competition. Athletics at High welcomes all athletes regardless of ability and it is our aim to develop you as an athlete in your discipline. The strength of our team lies in the enthusiasm of all athletes challenging each other for a place to represent the school at the AAGPS Athletics Finals. There are tremendous benefits to be gained from athletics training; these include physical, mental, social and educational rewards. I hope that you become involved in High Athletics and that it is a rewarding experience in all these ways. Good luck in the upcoming season. Please check out Athletics on our Moodle website. Pointscore: Double points for relays Age Champions: The athlete with the most points in any Age Group will be declared the Age Champion. Champion House: The house with the most points will be declared the Champion House. Age Groups: An athlete ceases to be under 14 on the 31st December of the year in which he reaches the age of 14 years. School Team: The school athletics team to compete at the GPS and CHS competition will be selected on the basis of performances at the school carnival, training sessions and the GPS invitational carnivals. Lane Draws: Will be determined by Marshals for all Heats and Heat Finals. Lane draws for Semi-Finals and Finals will be based on times and announced by the Recorders. 100m Heats/Semi/Finals: The fastest 16 competitors will contest the Semi-Finals. The Fastest 8 will progress to the finals. No points will be awarded for places in Heats or Semis – entry points only. 200m Heats/Finals: The fastest 8 will progress to the Finals. No points will be awarded for placing in the Heats. 1500m, 800m, 400m Heat/Finals: These will be conducted as Heat Finals. Where there is more than one heat, placing will be determined on times. Athletes are advised to run these races to the clock as Heat speed may vary. Relays: House relays will be conducted as 4×100m. House captains and vice-captains are asked to organise the house relays well in advance of the scheduled start.

Directions: Students are to cross the road at lights only. A BBQ lunch will be available for students to purchase prior to commencement of the Cross Country Carnival. It will be held outside the Gym. Stay in school grounds, then move over to the venue when the bell rings. When your race is called go to the starting area whether you are running or not. Non runners will stay in the starting area until directed to move by the Marshals At the finish you will be given a place ticket. If you are in the first 15 places you go to the first 15 table to have your position recorded, then proceed to your House Roll Table. All runners to proceed with finish ticket to your House Roll Table. Tell the teacher your name, roll class and finishing position After the race you will be dismissed by a teacher. NON RUNNERS will have their attendance recorded at a separate table.

Additional Info: You are also invited to join the Sydney High GPS Cross Country Team. GPS Cross Country is a Winter Sport and three age divisions (U14, U16, Opens) compete on Saturday mornings. The season spans across terms 2 and 3 and involves 11 Saturday morning carnivals. All are welcome to join.
Football: The Onion BagNew SHS Football StripThe second and final stage of the phasing in of the new football uniform will take place this year. All players (other than the 1st and 2nd grade teams) will be required to wear the new uniform. Uniforms are to be purchased from the High store. Note: The first trial match this season is scheduled for Saturday, 30th of April. Make sure that you have your new strip by this date. Junior DanceDear Year 7/8/9 Parents, There will be a school dance for Year 7/8/9 students held in the School Hall, Sydney Girls High School on Monday, 4th April from 7:00 pm - 1 0:00 pm. This function is only for CURRENT students at Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls. No other people will be permitted. Staff and security guards will provide supervision and students will only be allowed to leave before 10:00 pm if we can contact parents for permission. Drinks and chips will be on sale in the Cleveland Quadrangle. Students will be allowed to go into the Cleveland Quad from the School Hall and all this area will be secure. We do request that parents are prompt to collect their daughter/son at 10:00 pm. Boys are to be collected in the Boys School Car Park and girls in the Girls School so as to reduce congestion. Please do not allow them to make their own way home at this time of night. Students need to be fully aware of the expectations we have for them regarding acceptable behaviour. Should any incident occur parents will be contacted to collect their child. The NSW Department of Education Guidelines are the framework for conduct of this, and all other social events.
