High Talent
Congratulations to our recent Old Boys (2010), Aaron Ng and Edward Qiu (Business Information Technology), Jeremy Rajendram (Civil Engineering), Kai Lin (Electrical Engineering and Patrick Hsiao (Accounting) who were inducted as UNSW Co-op Scholars, last Friday. These prestigious and highly remunerative Scholarships are difficult to achieve. This is the highest number of successful applicants since at least 2000. Well done to our sailors who performed so well in the term 1, GPS-CAS Sailing Point Score Series- Pacers: 1st David Evans, 2nd Connor Robinson and 3rd Bart Daniels. A great result for High sailing! Congratulations to the 17 members of our swimming team who qualified for CHS; I hope to see some great results after Friday’s carnival.

Key themes in the School Funding debate

1. equity of educational outcomes: the panel believes that differences in educational outcomes should not be the result of differences in wealth, income, power or possessions.
2. recurrent funding: concerns about lack of transparency; the non-government sector wants funding to go directly to the system authority or school; the panel was sensitive to constitutional responsibilities.
3. capital funding: concerns about costs of maintaining and updating ageing infrastructure and learning facilities; praise for BER in primary schools but concerns about pressing needs in secondary schools.
4. targeted and needs-based funding: universal support for targeted needs-based funding to support educationally disadvantaged students, paid in addition to common funding for all students.
5. support for students with special needs or with disability: higher proportions of these students are enrolled in government schools; clear links with low SES and disability; no clear, universal definition.
6. governance and leadership: “ Research has consistently shown that the interactivity of relationships between principals, teachers, students, families and the broader community are fundamental to achieving stronger educational outcomes” (26). The importance of teacher quality was stressed.
7. community and family engagement: Strong views on “the importance of community engagement in attracting students to schools and promoting educational outcomes” (28). Some schools drew a link between effective community engagement and a school’s ability to attract philanthropic giving.

The Gonski Review is scheduled to report towards the end of this year. Submissions are invited. The Selective Schools Principals have commissioned a joint submission to be sent to the Funding Review Panel.

High’s Big Night Out
Try to come and join us at High’s ‘Big Night Out’. The food will be delicious and varied. The entertainment will add interest and colour to the evening. It is a very relaxed and convivial night out for the family. It is a chance to celebrate our cultural diversity and our common interest – the welfare and development of our boys. The event is organised mostly by many emails among volunteers. They donate time, food, cooking expertise and organisation. It is an impressive community effort. The objective is purely to have fun. If the P & C makes some money that is a bonus, but fund raising is not a driver of the occasion. Sunday, March 27 from 5pm.Tickets are $25 at the door.

National Safe Schools framework
The Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA), has published a revised National Safe Schools Framework. The vision is that all Australian schools “are safe, supportive and respectful teaching and learning communities that promote student wellbeing” (p.3). Students and staff need to feel safe and be safe at school. Apart from the usual policies and procedures, the statement also exhorts schools to “actively support young people to develop understandings and skills to keep themselves and others safe” (p.3). The framework is composed of nine elements, each of which has a list of characteristics. The document, under Mr Garrett’s signature, is a thoughtful and comprehensive blueprint upon which school Wellbeing Teams can build their programs and processes . At High we are justly proud of our policies, programs and procedures to ensure the perception and reality of safety. Nonetheless, we need to guard constantly against complacency and refresh our practice. I will be asking the Wellbeing Team to audit our school’s policies and practices against this national benchmark.

Parents are invited to an information evening on Tuesday 29th March 7.00pm outlining Preliminary English in Year 11. An overview of Preliminary Advanced and Extension English will be presented with a focus on the skills required for a successful transition into Year 12. This presentation will take place in the Drama studio 204 – parents and Year 11 students are very welcome.

Thanks to the Class of 2010

The Class of 2010 decided to enhance the learning environment by installing more statues in various places in the cloisters and in the Canteen garden. With the remainder of the money a Trophy cabinet was purchased which will house various school trophies. Parent Information Evenings

• An information evening re English Extension 1 & 2 for Year 12, 2012 will be held on Tuesday 29th March 2011 in Room 204 from 7:00pm until 8:00pm.
• STUDY SKILLS & HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD - If you have a child entering the final years of high school, you are about to discover that the HSC’s challenges and stresses are not exclusive to the students. As a parent, you can and will play an important role in your child’s HSC success. Over the next 12 – 24 months you will need to be a motivator, coach, supporter, tutor and you will have to do all of this without crossing the line and becoming the enemy! Are you ready for the challenge?

On Thursday 31st March 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm in The Great Hall, the P&C will be hosting a presentation to our parent body to make sure that you are ready for the year ahead. The presentation is to be hosted by Elevate Education.

This night is not to be missed and could help turn the next 12 months into a rewarding time for you and your family.

Last week we debated Trinity at High. The Juniors debated “That Medicare should fund treatment for Smoking related Illnesses” and our Year 8s, who were negative won their debate. Unfortunately the Year 7s and Year 9s – who had the difficult job of arguing affirmative, lost their debates. The Seniors debated “That Australia Should Embrace Nuclear Power “and each of our three teams won their debates. Well Done, Boys.

With our double hosting last week it was certainly very busy and it was fantastic to see so many parents around.

Parents Information Evening

The Debating Supporters Group is holding a meeting at 6.30pm on Thursday 7th April. The purpose of this meeting is to inform parents about the Debating Program at High. It is also an opportunity for parents to meet other parents of debaters and for you to be able to ask any questions you may have to members of the DSG or to me. Please come along and show your support for your sons who are debating.

Eastside

After three consecutive away debates, it was good to return to High for the first home debate of the Eastside season. It was particularly encouraging to see large amounts of supper food provided, and that some juniors came to support the senior debaters.

Our Year 8s built on last week to win again for the Juniors and our Seniors debated Legalising euthanasia which is a commonly debated topic, so the senior debates had a higher level of complexity than previous weeks this year. Like last week, our Years 11s and 12s came out on top, while our Year 10s, after a great start to the season, have dropped off over the last two weeks. This Friday is the last regular season round of Eastside; another home debate, this time against SCEGGS. A strong set of results here, and potentially every High team could make the semi-finals

Directions:
After the Athletics Carnival, students are to walk back to school.

Students are to cross the road at lights only.

A BBQ lunch will be available for students to purchase prior to commencement of the Cross Country Carnival. It will be held outside the Gym.

Stay in school grounds, then move over to the venue when the bell rings. When your race is called go to the starting area whether you are running or not. Non runners will stay in the starting area until directed to move by the Marshals At the finish you will be given a place ticket. If you are in the first 15 places you go to the first 15 table to have your position recorded, then proceed to your House Roll Table. All runners to proceed with finish ticket to your House Roll Table. Tell the teacher your name, roll class and finishing position After the race you will be dismissed by a teacher.

NON RUNNERS will have their attendance recorded at a separate table.

Rules:
Everyone attends.
You must run in shoes.
Stay on the course and follow directions from course marshals.
Spectators must stay within 20m of Cleveland St and are not permitted on the course.
Winning house determined by the lowest total of the first ten runners to finish.
To qualify for the Award scheme you must compete & finish.
Top ten runners will comprise the provisional school team to compete at the zone.
Only the first 15 places will be timed.
Cross Country Champions will be selected from this event.
Any MIC ruling is final.

Additional Info:
The School Cross Country is the first qualifying event within the CHS Competition.
The first 10 runners for each age division will make up the school team for the Eastern Suburbs Zone Carnival.
The first 10 runners at the Zone Carnival will compete at the Sydney East Regional Carnival and the first 10 runners from Regional Carnival go on to the NSW All Schools Carnival.

You are also invited to join the Sydney High GPS Cross Country Team. GPS Cross Country is a Winter Sport and three age divisions (U14, U16, Opens) compete on Saturday mornings. The season spans across terms 2 and 3 and involves 11 Saturday morning carnivals. All are welcome to join.

Athletics 2011

Information for Athletes and their Parents

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE 1500m RACE STARTS AT 8.15AM

I would like to warmly welcome all athletes, new and old, and their families to the 2011 season.

Sydney Boys High School offers boys the opportunity to compete in the prestigious GPS Athletics competition. The GPS Athletic season is run in the last four weeks of Term 3. The season culminates in the AAGPS Athletics carnival held at Homebush. Here the nine GPS schools compete against each other in two different age divisions (senior and junior). Boys from each Year group represent Sydney Boys in these divisions. They compete in front of nearly 10,000 spectators. The nature of GPS Athletic competition is team oriented with a points system designed to reward a good all round performance from a team rather than one strong individual performance. The coaching staff stresses the importance of this aspect of the competition.

Athletics at High welcomes all athletes regardless of ability and it is our aim to develop you as an athlete in your discipline. The strength of our team lies in the enthusiasm of all athletes challenging each other for a place to represent the school at the AAGPS Athletics Finals.

There are tremendous benefits to be gained from athletics training; these include physical, mental, social and educational rewards. I hope that you become involved in High Athletics and that it is a rewarding experience in all these ways.

GPS Athletics

The Athletics season is short, but intense, and the boys involved always enjoy the experience. Boys (and parents) considering Athletics in 2011 should be aware of the following points….

• Athletics does not compete with Soccer and Rugby. Boys are encouraged to do Athletics and another Winter GPS sport during the season
• Sprint training for Athletics is held after school on Mondays on Moore Park West and Tuesdays for longer distance training at the same location
• Athletics does not continue as a regular sport after the GPS Championships – 17th September
• Boys are expected to take responsibility for their own training outside these times
• High will host an Invitational carnival this year at ES Marks on Saturday 3rd September.
• If your son is competing in the 2011 season please make yourself available to help at this carnival

The Student Award Scheme and Athletics

Athletes need to satisfy the following 5 criteria if they wish to get the student award scheme for athletics.

1. Athletes must complete five of the six holiday training sessions at ES Marks
2. Athletes need to compete in the 3 invitational carnivals
3. Athletes must complete three athletics training session per week for the 4 week season
4. Athletes must train every Monday or Tuesday in the five weeks up to the start of the GPS Athletics season
5. They must also complete another sport’s training session or a weights session

This may seem a lot of training but in relation to winter or summer sports it is relatively light. Be committed to the training so we can challenge our rivals

Aims of the Carnival

• Promote maximum student participation
• Promote fair competition between athletes and houses
• Promote a sense of pride in the achievements of fellow athletes and the school community.

Banned Items & Activities

• Normal school rules apply
• No footballs or Frisbees on the days of the carnival
• Do not take valuables to this event, as theft at the carnival is a common occurrence
• Athletes are not allowed to run in bare feet

House Rules & Events

• Athletes must run in a least two track events and participate in one field event to get Student Award Scheme points.
• Athletes will go to their designated area on the days of the carnival for roll call (see attached map).
• Athletes will be seated in their designated area before and during roll call. Roll call teachers will not start roll call until everyone is seated.
• Roll call classes will sit in lines – Year 7 closest to the track, moving in ascending order up to Year 12 at the back of the stands.
• Athletes must come to the carnival in house colours or athletic singlets. All athletes must run in house colours. No house colours, no house point. One point will be allocated for each student in house SHIRTS OR ATHLETIC SINGLETS.
• House captains and vice-captains will be asked to organise their respective houses for formal events during the day.

Pointscore:
Points will be awarded for the following places………
1st – 10pts, 2nd - 8pts, 3rd - 6 pts, 4th - 4 pts, 5th - 2 pts, 6th and all finishers – 1 pts.

Double points for relays

Age Champions: The athlete with the most points in any Age Group will be declared the Age Champion.

Champion House: The house with the most points will be declared the Champion House.

Age Groups: An athlete ceases to be under 14 on the 31st December of the year in which he reaches the age of 14 years.

School Team: The school athletics team to compete at the GPS and CHS competition will be selected on the basis of performances at the school carnival, training sessions and the GPS invitational carnivals.

Lane Draws: Will be determined by Marshals for all Heats and Heat Finals. Lane draws for Semi-Finals and Finals will be based on times and announced by the Recorders.

100m Heats/Semi/Finals: The fastest 16 competitors will contest the Semi-Finals. The Fastest 8 will progress to the finals. No points will be awarded for places in Heats or Semis – entry points only.

200m Heats/Finals: The fastest 8 will progress to the Finals. No points will be awarded for placing in the Heats.

1500m, 800m, 400m Heat/Finals: These will be conducted as Heat Finals. Where there is more than one heat, placing will be determined on times. Athletes are advised to run these races to the clock as Heat speed may vary.

Relays: House relays will be conducted as 4×100m. House captains and vice-captains are asked to organise the house relays well in advance of the scheduled start.

Lost 9 - 2
The second last game of the season against the undefeated co-premiers was always going to be tough, and High felt the pressure in the first half, conceding goals steadily without being able to form a play of our own. We got on the scoreboard early in the 3rd quarter with a big 5m penalty from Brendan Hancock. This gave us the boost we needed and our defence tightened up admirably. Offensive chances were more readily created, and on a number of occasions it was only the skilled keeper that prevented a flow of goals. Jeremy Dobrowolski single-handedly found the back of the net over three defenders in the final quarter to give us a very respectable final score of 9-2 against a team that has conceded less than 3 goals on average all season.

Lost 9 – 6
Having played Scots a few times in the season regular we knew what we were up against on a rainy Saturday. Traditionally a very strong water polo school, we showed our supporters and the opposition what we could do when we played as a team. Strong efforts up front by Shaun P, Max and Eric tied in with solid defence in the back by Shaun F and a super-star performance by Hiram in goals kept the score-line at 6 all at 3 quarter time.

Unfortunately lack of fitness and a lapse in concentration allowed Scots to score 3 unanswered goals in the final quarter to take out a well fought out contest. .

We have one final game against St Ignatius and I’m sure the boys are hoping to show everyone how far they’ve come as a team and as water polo players

Canteen Purchases in free periods

Senior Boys, Please note that the canteen staff are happy to serve you in your free period, but this is also when they are preparing food for recess and lunch so you may need to wait until we have finished whatever we are doing. We will try to serve you asap but we could be short handed and the priority has to be getting food ready as quickly as possible sometimes with limited help. Your understanding and patience in this regard is appreciated.

Next week also we will start winding down for end of term, so some items may not be available. .

Remember: If you want to be sure of getting something in particular for lunch, the best way is to ORDER IT.

Riverview Gold Cup Results

On a very rainy and bleak morning there was actually excitement at the sheds as boys turned up looking forward to the long row around to Lane Cove River! The technique and teamwork amongst the crews was vastly improved.

Highlight this week was the performance of our School Eights. The 1st VIII rowed an improved race, threatening Joeys at the finish, and are now in the mix for the Head of the River. The 2nd VIII strongly challenged the Joeys 2nd VIII with a photo finish on the line. Congratulations to -

Rowing Dinner

We had nearly every rower and many parents fill the Great Hall for the Rowing Dinner on Wednesday night. It was a very special night for the boys as they now approach the High Regatta and the Head of the River. I think everyone in the Hall would have been impressed with our rowers. The speeches and presentation of crews were outstanding by Jackson Tan, Year 8 Quads, Steve Comninos, Year 9 Quads, Alex Pereira, Year 10 VIIIs, and Captain of Boats, Jonah Petrie, School VIIIs.

Certificates for ‘Outstanding Contribution to teamwork, training and performance’ were awarded to –

GPS Head of the River

Saturday 2nd April
Races start at 10.00am with the Year 10 Eights. The School Eights race at 11.35 and 11.50 am. It is all over by 12 noon. This is the big day on the GPS school calendar and is quite a spectacle with all GPS schools attending. We have our own decorated marquee with the School Stage Band playing, so put on the blue and brown and come and cheer! All rowing parents are invited back to the sheds for a presentation at approximately 3.00pm to thank everyone involved in the season – coaches, staff, committee, parents and the boys.

Sydney Boys High School Vs. Grammar

Unfortunately, due to the wettest March day in history, all games bar the 2nd XI were abandoned due to unprepared pitches and unsafe playing conditions. Hopefully all the boys can apply themselves in their respective 1 day match fixtures next week and finish off the season strongly for Sydney Boys High.

With this being the last game of cricket ever for many of our 1st and 2nd XI cricketers representing Sydney Boys High, hopefully all the training and hard work put in by the boys over the last 6 years culminates in a win for both the 1st and 2nd XI against Sydney Grammar. There would be no better way to finish off the season and their playing careers!

Here are a few of the outstanding achievements which the Year 12 boys have achieved wearing the brown and blue:

1. Michael Phung was chosen as a representative in the combined Australian 5 Highs team, and was also awarded fielder of the tournament in the 2010/11 season. Michael was also a member of the 3rd placed 1st XI cricket team in the 2008/09 season, playing a key part in the demolition of Newington College, taking 3 wickets in the 2nd innings. Phungy is the captain of the 1st XI this year and is completing his 3rd and final season in the 1st IX.
2. Saif Haque’s 5 wicket haul against both The Scots College in the 2nd XI in the 2008/09 season and The Scots College in the 1st XI(took 8 wickets in both innings) this season culminated in a victory both times. Saif also took a 5 wicket haul against Sydney Grammar School in the 2nd XI in the 2008/09 season, which was inclusive of a hat trick. Saif is regarded as one of the most successful bowlers to go through the Sydney High ranks.
3. Sivasaran Sooriakumar took a 5 for against Shore this season to give the 1st XI boys a shot at victory. His big hitting is also an asset to the 1st XI, being the teams 2nd highest run scorer at the 5 Highs Tournament this year.
4. Nakul Bhagwat was the youngest captain of the 2nd XI - taking over the reins at the beginning of Year 10. His best knock came against Sydney Grammar in the 2008/09 season in the 2nd XI when he scored 70 odd*.
5. Krishan Sivayogarayan holds the highest score in the 2nd XI over a number of years with his 85 against St Ignatius College earlier this year. He also becomes the first player in the school’s history to complete 3 full seasons in the 2nd XI. He is also the highest run scorer in the 2nd XI this year with 210 runs*. He is the captain of the 2nd XI and is also the school’s cricket prefect.
6. Sangeeth Subramaniam’s 49 against Newington College earlier this year was a spirited performance which saw him involved in a 100 run stand with Jesse Moffat. Sangeeth is also the school’s cricket prefect.
7. Since his highly regarded debut Sam Lane is seen as ‘Mr Consistency’ throughout the ranks of Sydney High Cricket. His 48 against Adelaide High saw him save the 1st XI and post a respectable total. He was awarded the prestigious Junior Cricketer of the Year award in 2008 and his ability to constantly make scores in the 20s and 30s has seen him as one of the most reliable batsmen.
8. Kumudika Gunuratne is regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in the 2nd XI competition this season, and often has oppositions questioning why he isn’t in 1sts. He has represented the school at the 5 Highs tournament and in the 1st XI. Whilst his bowling is what brought him to fame, his fielding and batting abilities also amaze, classifying him as the true all rounder.
9. Nathan Kok is another player who is unlucky not to be playing in the 1st XI. Due to his injury prone nature, he has often missed chunks of the season, however has the ability to make constant scores in the 20s. His catches at slip this season in the 2nd XI have also been amazing and had many batsmen speechless.
10. Caspar Price is often regarded by both opposition coaches and players as the ideal opening bowler. His ability to both swing the ball both ways and blast away the opposition with his pace has seen him as the highest wicket taker this year in the 2nd XI. He is also regarded as the team’s biggest hitter, having hit 6s at every GPS ground.

Arriving at Grammar, the boys were met with the surprise that Krishan was available to play, after the 1sts game had been cancelled earlier in the morning. Unfortunately Dhruv Gupta was then to become 12th man. For the first hour, there looked like no stop in the rain until a brief halt saw the groundsman finish his preparation of the wicket and the captains to toss.

High won the toss and elected to bat on what then looked a good pitch. Unfortunately, 5 minutes before the start of play the rain once again began and didn’t stop for over an hour, with the boys taking an early lunch. Almost certain there would be no play on the 1st day, the boys “stuffed” themselves at lunch only to be confronted with the harsh reality that the weather had cleared up and the umpires had decided to play. So at 1:25, after 3 hours of lazing around Weigall, the openers were ready to face the first ball, the conditions definitely favouring the Grammar boys. Throughout the 25 overs we faced, there was a constant drizzle and unfortunately the High batsmen weren’t able to get good value for their shots, with many balls stopping just short of the boundary. Regardless of such ‘obstacles’ High got off to a great start before Al played a blistering straight drive which just brushed the bowler’s hand on his follow through and broke the stumps at the non-strikers end. Grammar went up for the run out and the umpire wasn’t sure.

In true High spirit, Lahiru walked on 14. This brought Krishan to the crease at 1/35. As running between the wickets became harder due to the slippery conditions, sawdust was constantly needed and there were many stoppages in the game. This however, didn’t stop Al, who through an aggressive display of batting reached his 50 of just 59 balls, an innings inclusive of five 4’s and a 6 straight back over the bowlers head. Unfortunately, Hughesy fell for 59 just prior to tea. At 2/95, we were in a strong position, however Grammar took another quick wicket before the break. At 3/106 after 25 overs, with both Krishan(29*) and Nathan(1*) looking strong, the boys were disappointed when the game was abandoned after tea.

Considering the conditions, to be going at almost 4 a over was an excellent effort by the boys. Next week, aggressive but sensible batting is required to see High post a strong total and then declare. A strong effort is needed by both the fielders and bowlers to see High get that elusive GPS victory which has evaded us all season.

SBHS Cricket will celebrate the 2011 cricket season at the SBHS Cricket dinner on

Wednesday 30th March 2011
at 6.00 for 6.30pm pm in the Great hall

The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult and $25 per student.

Players are asked to take responsibility for coaches’ thank you gifts on a team by team basis - captains, please organize.

LAST DAY FOR PAYMENT AT THE MAIN OFFICE IS FRIDAY 18th MARCH. Tickets are limited.

Boys are to wear school uniform at the dinner. Some soft drinks will be provided and students may bring additional soft drinks. Parents may BYO wine/beer, if they wish.

The last weekend of Term 1 competitive sailing saw
SYDNEY HIGH WIN THE SCHOOLS SAILING COMPETITION FOR PACERS FOR THE FIRST TIME !

Term 1 has been a brilliant season for High Pacer sailing, with an overall clean sweep podium finish for Sydney High. This is a fantastic result. High has achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the best schools sailing competition in Sydney in a fleet with some of the state’s best school sailors. Overall results in Pacer division (skipper; crews varied)

Although final results need to be confirmed, many 'new' skippers would also have racked up commendable places, including Darren Taing, Daniel Fang, Ben Hillier & Tim Pillien. Special mention, too, for Ennes Mehmedbasic who had an absolute blinder of a day in the Laser radials, winning both races in the very competitive field. An excellent and much deserved result. Marcus had a welcome return to sailing, but with his injury and a two week layoff still affecting his performance, he seemed to have problems keeping his Laser upright!

We now are shifting our focus to the upcoming NSW Schools Teams Racing Championships in early April and we will be training for this event intensively over the next few weeks.

SBHS Big Night Out is on this Sunday - 27th March, 5.00pm

• We had our last Big Night Out planning meeting this week and we are ready ! - We now just need parents, boys and teachers to buy their tickets.
  Parents have put together a fantastic 3-course menu for teachers, students and their families – fantastic value at $20.00 per person.
• Bollywood dancers, henna tattoo artist, stilt walkers and last year’s Year 12 rock band – The Icebergs – are coming as well as our talented jazz ensemble and string orchestra.
• We are playing Bingo – 2 games for $5.00 and Heads & Tails entry for a gold coin – with fantastic prizes to be won, so make sure you bring some spare cash to be in the running for prizes.

Junior Dance

Dear Year 7/8/9 Parents,

There will be a school dance for Year 7/8/9 students held in the School Hall, Sydney Girls High School on Monday, 4th April from 7:00 pm - 1 0:00 pm. This function is only for CURRENT students at Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls. No other people will be permitted.

Staff and security guards will provide supervision and students will only be allowed to leave before 10:00 pm if we can contact parents for permission. Drinks and chips will be on sale in the Cleveland Quadrangle. Students will be allowed to go into the Cleveland Quad from the School Hall and all this area will be secure.

We do request that parents are prompt to collect their daughter/son at 10:00 pm. Boys are to be collected in the Boys School Car Park and girls in the Girls School so as to reduce congestion. Please do not allow them to make their own way home at this time of night.

Students need to be fully aware of the expectations we have for them regarding acceptable behaviour. Should any incident occur parents will be contacted to collect their child. The NSW Department of Education Guidelines are the framework for conduct of this, and all other social events.
