High Notes, Vol 12 No 7, March 18 2011

From the Principal
High Talent
Congratulations to Declan Gorey (Year 12), who was awarded a Gold
Certificate in the Australian Mathematics Olympiad competition, ranking him third in a field of
118 invited mathematicians from around Australia. Well done to Jesse Moffatt on his 101 not out
off 20 overs in a mid-week Davidson Shield round 2 win. At the Australian Junior Championships,
Ivor Metcalf was second in the U17 110m hurdles (14.78) and 7th in the U17 high jump (1.88m);
Anton Brokman placed third in the U16 800m (2.01.97); Frank Torok was fifth in the 5000m running
a school record 15.12.05; and Adam Booth 10th in the 2000m steeplechase (6.44.7).
Congratulations, boys! Well done to Ashwin Rudder who represented High in the winning NSW Public
Schools team in the Commonwealth Day 2011 Schools Challenge debate at the NSW Parliament. Well
done to Vyaas Rajan (7S) who has shown initiative in raising money to aid the victims of the
Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
Queensland Floods Appeal
Thank you to all boys, staff and parents who were involved
in organising or contributing to the parking event and Mufti Day held recently. As a result of
your efforts SBHS has contributed $4,233 towards the reconstruction and refurbishment of
Queensland schools.
New Bus Driver
Our bus driver for 2009-10, Peter Hatch, moved to Tasmania where he
has property. We welcome our new driver, Kevin Eadie. Kevin is driving our boys around to their
venues. He has also agreed to drive for occasional outside hirers. We have worked out a cost for
hiring the bus with cost recovery for the driver on top. We are pitching our pricing to provide a
service to other government schools. In doing so, we hope to earn enough to cover a proportion of
our service costs. If you know of a school that has a need for a bus and driver, call 0418169095
for details. I know that all members of the school community will treat Kevin with courtesy and
respect as he carries out his duties and will follow his instructions and respect the vehicles he
drives.
How are schools funded?
In 2007-08, 3.4 million students were being educated at a
cost of $41 billion in 9562 schools employing 3% of the Australian workforce (337000). The
majority of students are enrolled in government schools (66% in 2009). From 1999 to 2009 student
numbers in schools increased by 233,300. The independent sector attracted 140,395, the Catholic
sector 68,667 and the government sector 24,239. State and territory governments provided 89% of
funding for government schools ($23.5 billion 2007-08), $3 billion coming from the Australian
Government. It funded non-government schools with $6.1 billion (42% of total funding), while the
states and territories provided $2.2 billion (15%) and private income in the form of fees and
donations was estimated at $6.3 billion. Private income accounted for 58% of independent school
funds, but only 28% of Catholic schools income.
Non-government schools are funded to meet a proportion of recurrent costs from the Australian
Government through the Schools Assistance Act 2008. The Average Government School
Recurrent Costs (AGSRC) amount for secondary students was $11,393 in 2010. Non-government schools
receive recurrent funding within a range from 70% AGSRC for those communities with SES profile of
85 or lower to 13.7% for SES scores of 130 or higher. The AGSRC is used as an indexation factor
– the percentage change in per capita state and territory expenditure between two financial
years. However, ‘funding maintained' independent schools have their pre-SES funding
entitlements preserved at their 2000 level of funding, with full indexation. ‘Funding
guaranteed’ schools have their 2008 per capita entitlements guaranteed until their
2009-2012 SES score funding plus indexation equals their 2008 funding.
The effect of these exceptions is to preserve the status quo for independent schools until
increases in indexed funding catch up to their 2008 levels. Funding anomalies exist.
The Flat during lesson times
Noise on The Flat, particularly coming from the
basketball courts, is disturbing the learning of students in nearby rooms such as 801 and 802.
The Executive agreed to ban ball games from The Flat during lesson times. Senior School boys have
free periods on particular days for a variety of reasons. However, they are not entitled to
disturb the learning of others during their free time. We have financed a senior library for boys
in Years 10-12. We ask that boys ‘extend their learning day’ by using this facility
if they happen to have free time. If the Senior Library is full, the Junior Library is an
alternative. Boys working quietly in the McDonald Wing courtyard will be tolerated. Boys who
cannot get themselves motivated to work during free periods and want to play ball games must move
to Moore Park West to do so during lesson time.

What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library?
Now that we are well and truly into the new school year it is obvious that the libraries at SBHS
have an even bigger role to play in the education of our boys in that they make use of our
facilities more than ever for serious study and research.
Often in the morning the McDonald Senior library has over 100 students in the library, many of
whom are studying, reading or researching. Many are discussing their work in groups but the fact
is the majority of them are actually working. Students using the library throughout the day
during lesson time, when they have a study period, make good use of the library for their study
and assignment needs. We are privileged here to have students who are highly motivated,
interested in learning and self-disciplined enough to prepare them for the future world and of
course in the short term to complete their HSC successfully.
Our online facilities have expanded with the provision of more databases and hard copy
resources designed to enrich the curriculum and the literacy of the students using them. Online
databases now available to students are: JSTOR, Encyclopaedia Britannica, EBSCOHost databases,
Proquest.
Students are also encouraged to join the State Library which provides access to many more
relevant and useful databases accessible to members outside the library. The teacher librarian
started the school year working collaboratively with a Year 10 class in an innovative research
assignment in Geography. Hopefully, the students gained skills and knowledge of the information
and research process which they can apply to other subjects and research assignments.
In the Senior school all Year 10 and 11 students have laptops which are used in study periods as
well as while they are in class. Year 12s have access to 25 desktop computers and at times they
use their own laptops. Both laptop and desktop computers are linked to the school and DET network
enabling them to access resources, classes (on Moodle), the Internet, and other resources through
the network. They can also save their work and/or scan documents to their own folders.
This school provides many fantastic tools to enable students to learn in the 21st century way as
well as amazing teachers to guide and teach students the skills and knowledge they require to
achieve success in their learning. The library’s job is to provide resources and guide
students in the use of them as well as encourage and support reading and enquiry.
Literacy is at the core of policy and the development of a balanced library collection
including up to date online resources and access to web 2.0 tools at point of need in the
research process as well as a dynamic and relevant book, magazine and DVD resources are
absolutely essential to encourage real deep and meaningful learning.
Reading for information and interest including enjoyment of good quality fiction and
magazines form a basis for successful literacy. Much research in the field of literacy affirms
the view that students who read for any reason will be more successful in their learning at
school and achieve more success in life than those who do not.
To do well in the HSC English course, students are encouraged to read widely and not just the set
texts. Our task in the libraries is to provide a varied, interesting and quality collection of
books to encourage wide reading. In my experience as a teacher librarian, students who have
immediate visual and physical access to quality books will tend to read when the opportunity is
available. E-books are now more accessible and are available through our library catalogue
further expanding access to books! Our students get excited by the addition of new books and
other resources. Both digital and hard copy book resources have their place in the school library
of today. .
The libraries are an essential and central place in the school that can remove barriers and
constraints to learning and provide “the learning intersection between print information
and the development of expertise of learning with and through information and IT tools.”
(Ross Todd, Envisioning School Libraries for the Future…, 19/11/10)
Research in the field of school libraries promotes the idea that school libraries are spaces
where: “reading, literacy, inquiry, thinking, imagination, discovery, experimentation and
creativity are central to students’ learning and development in all curriculums and
learning for life.” (from notes taken at Conference attended “21C School Libraries
– Getting into the Action” from Learning Commons Treasury by David Loertscher

Thanks for library donation
Many thanks to Ms Brokman, mother of Anton Year 11 for her wonderful donation of 33 books in
great condition.
If anyone has an annual book clean out our Library really appreciates fairly new (less than 15
years old) books. Our office boys will assist you to lift them from your car.

From the Canteen
Canteen closes at Warning bell
When you are collecting your lunch order, it can get
quite crowded and busy. Dr Jaggar reinforced that those who arrive first should be served first
and that all boys should stand in an orderly manner to avoid pushing anyone in front.
Thank you all for your assistance in this regard – this will help us get your lunches out
to you more efficiently.
Win a $10 canteen voucher for your son……
We realise our canteen
volunteers are priceless and we could not possibly afford to pay them all. However to show our
appreciation for their help, we offer a $10 canteen voucher to a volunteer once a month. When you
attend on your rostered day, sign the duty book and you will be included in the draw for the
voucher.
And the winner in February was Rita Shackel
Make sure your son goes to canteen to enjoy the benefits of your labour - we know he will make
good use of the voucher. Thank you, Rita, for being a part of our happy band of volunteers.
Our thanks go to these people as well who helped out last week in canteen: Pauline Chan, Pam
Jepson, Usha Arvind, Yoshie Kita Leong. Robyn Gordon, Jenny Wong, Mehrnoosh Johnstone, Elsa Li.

SBHS Debating
Tonight both debates are home debates. It is important that all debaters and chair- people
bring a plate of food to share. This is our way of reciprocating the generosity we receive when
we go to other schools to debate. It is preferable if we get both savoury and sweet food. This
way we can provide High Boys and our guests with a real supper after all their hard work. Of
course, we welcome parents to the debates and to the supper afterwards. The Parents Support Group
is always looking for parents to get actively involved and this is an ideal opportunity to
support your sons and meet other parents involved in debating.
Eastside
Round 3 of Eastside saw the traditional rivalry with Grammar reignited for 2011. Our junior teams
found arguing in favour of taxing rich nations to help poor nations reduce emissions a tough ask,
and Grammar’s recent strength at junior levels continued, although our Year 8s grabbed
their first win.
Another interesting topic faced the seniors: providing compensation to mining companies for
losses stemming from the carbon tax. Year 10 fell for the first time this season, while the Year
11s rebounded from last week, and the Year 12s continued their solid run.
It would be great to see some juniors staying back to watch the seniors next week, as we take on
rivals Sydney Girls at home.

FED
I have two students helping now on Home Debate Nights and I am very grateful to
them. They are David Wang and Raymond Hua. You did a great job last Friday. Thank you.
We had some new students and some old hands take on the role of Chair people last week. This is
an excellent way to improve your debating skills. Well Done to you boys.
And, finally, congratulations to our FED debaters this week. Years 8 – 11 comfortably won
their debates. It is a shame about Year 7, but Year 11 must be praised for fielding two teams,
one to debate St Josephs’ Year 11s and another to debate their Year 12s.

Thomas Whalan Cup – Round 1
Opens v Newington College
Lost 11 - 5
High took on a strong Newington team on Saturday and played two very tight
opening quarters to be level 4-4 at half time. We took a 1-0 lead early and Brendan Hancock
continued to equalise every goal Newington scored. In the second half we failed to maintain the
defensive intensity, but a strong counter-attack kept us in the game. Only in the last quarter
did the scoreboard slip away, ending at 11-5. Goal scorers this week were Samuel Beston, Jeremy
Dobrowolski and Brendan Hancock (3).
Earlier in the week, our squad travelled to Sutherland to compete in the group stage of the CHS
Knockout. Our 3 games were against Cronulla High, Sydney Tech and Woolooware. Cronulla beat us
7-1, going on to take out the group undefeated. The highlight of the day was a close-fought win
over Sydney Tech 5-4. They were an aggressive opponent and desperate to win. Backing up on this
success, High kept a very strong Woolooware team to a close 5-2 loss to end the day on a very
positive note.
Samuel Beston
16s v Newington College
Lost 9 - 2
Having played Newington in the final round of the GPS/CAS competition the
week before and losing 16 – 2, we weren’t exactly thrilled at the opportunity to play
them two weeks in a row. However, as we continue improve every week, we were able to have a 7
goal turn around in 7 days. Our defence continues to improve each week. We mark man on man across
the pool and make our opposition work for their goals.
Newington 16Bs won every game in the GPS/CAS competition by more than 10 goals, so it is a credit
to our dedication and improvement that we were able to keep the score in a respectable single
figure defeat. Special thanks to Darren & Max Chien, Shaun Pak and Shaun Fletcher for playing
in the CHS knock-out team at Sutherand Pool on Tuesday.
Tennis report
King’s vs High
High was defeated 11-1 on Saturday. We are now in threat of not finishing second, but we are
confident with the hard work that we will put in over the next couple of weeks that we can reach
this goal. A lot of hard work was put in last week, lots of hours, lots of sleds runs suffered.
We expected more from ourselves but unfortunately the only match won was my singles match. Every
person fought as hard as they could and were mostly in a winning position; at the end of the day
the end of the day that’s all you can ask for against a team as strong as King’s. We
face Grammar this week and it is an important match for us to take back our second spot. We
expect a big win and pressure is on for Patrick and Lachlan to perform.

High bounced back from last week’s loss against Scots (without Andrija, Craig and Eamon) to
beat Kings by 68 points (with a full squad) and in the process pass 1000 team points for the
season. The ladder is still very close with Newington and Scots only one win behind meaning that
the final two matches against Grammar (home) and Newington (away) will be crucial in deciding the
premiership winners. To be guaranteed as outright premiers High must win both of these games, so
come along and support your school in their bid to make history and win the premiership for only
the second time. One loss will allow High to be Co-premiers. Regardless of the GPS result, for
High to qualify for the Nationals in Championship Division they must continue to win the CHS
Knockout and win the state final VS the CIS Champion. (It is a good chance it will be

Old Boys, Parents and Friends Day
This Saturday we play Grammar at Sydney High, 10am for 2nd grade and 11:15 for 1st grade. As it
is the Year 12s last home game it would be great to get as many supporters as possible to the
games. If you are a fan of Sydney High basketball and want to show your, support-please attend
this Saturday.
To Our Junior Teams
Congratulations to all our junior teams who have shown an immense improvement across the season
thanks to the persistence of their coaches. It is particularly satisfying to see our 15 and 16 As
win because these players are the future of High basketball. Work hard and you never know where
you will end up in the future. Mr Hayman is watching everyone every week and notices your talent

Sydney Boys High School Sailing
Saturday’s racing was sailed in pretty much no wind, with a sea breeze only filling in well
after lunchtime. Because of this, racing was called off with only one race sailed that day.
Saturday saw the return to the normal Schools’ Point Score racing after the Tri Series for
the last three weeks.
The absence of Cranbrook made the fleet significantly smaller, with around 15-20 boats in the
Pacers as opposed to the normal 30. On a day with such little wind, a well-timed start and clear
wind (no boats covering you) was absolutely crucial. David Evans slipped into a space right next
to the start boat with about 20 seconds to the start and was able to get off the line ahead of
most of the fleet. Bart Daniels had a good start as well but picked up many places on the first
work to the top mark by keeping on the windward side of the fleet and maintaining boat speed. In
frustrating conditions, many crews were penalised for paddling or rocking the boat and in a good
show of sportsmanship, High were not penalised. Encouraging signs also came from Darren Taing and
Tim Pilien who finished in mid-fleet positions after only a few Saturdays at the helm.

Sydney Boys High School vs The Scots College the Kings School
MIC Report
Congratulations to our 1st XI team for a great victory over the Scots
College 1st XI on Saturday. This was a great result for the team which has played well all
season. They also had a big win in Davidson Shield over South Sydney last week by 6/322 - Jesse
Moffat 101 not out defeated South Sydney 47 2/1- Sai Sivayogarayan. Sydney High is also
consistently starting to get some good wins in the other age group teams. Well done to all of
these teams who won their game last week - 3rd XI, 16B, 15B, 15C and 14C. The 14A team also had a
good contest by drawing their game. Each team has improved on their performances throughout the
season by some good coaching and some inspirational play by the players on a Saturday. With two
weeks remaining it would be good to finish the season off on a high note by performing strongly
over the next couple of weeks. Good luck to all of our teams in the last game(s) of the
season.
D Smith.
1st XI
Sydney Boys High 10-259 (82 overs) Owen Duffy 62, Sudam Dias 39, Jesse Moffat
39, Michael Phung 36, Oliver Meroni 25, Siva Sooriakumar 22 and 6-60 (20 overs) Owen Duffy 18 no,
Oliver Meroni 17, Jesse Moffat 10 defeated Scots 10-168 (54 overs) Saif Haque 5-47, Jesse Moffat
3-27 and 9-210 declared (40 overs)
Siva Sooriakumar 3-32, Saigf Haque 3-70, Jesse Moffat 2-43) on the first innings. With a mere 39
runs to win, victory was well within sight. Jesse Moffat looked to take us through to the total,
but lost his wicket after accumulating 39 runs. With Sudam Dias’s entrance, his partnership
with Owen Duffy pushed us through to beyond 250 runs, well beyond the target of 169. Owen
achieved his maiden half century on 62 not out, with Sudan a quick firing 39. With Scots looking
desperately for an outright victory, we were sent in again with 20 overs to play. Although
looking slightly unsteady on 6/60 at the close of play, we were able to secure our first win in
the GPS competition this year!!
2nd XI
Scots 8 dec 218 defeated Sydney Boys High 10 /22 and 10 /116
After being in competitive position Day one at 1/6 (9) and Lahiru Katupitiya and Sachin Dhingra
at the wicket for Day 2, there was great team optimism. On arrival at the ground the optimism
turned to utter disappointment with a pitch inspection that was on the border of abandonment for
the day. However, the contractor Green options put in an extra effort with the roller and
provided a damp wicket. Our 1st Innings was a disaster, with the top four batsmen having to play
on an unpredictable pitch which bounced, slid on grassed areas, with balls staying low due to
hitting wet patches. The 2nd innings started on a pitch that had extra time to harden and to the
credit of the team, they set about the task of minimizing the final result to avoid an outright,
loss but having to bat for just on 3 hours, and later failing to hold on by 38 minutes from
stumps. Good application by Daniel Smith (54), Nathan Kok (28), Ahdil Ansareen (9), Krishan
Sivayogarayan(6) and on debut, Ned Anson (5) were the major run contributors as we battled it out
for 43 overs.
3rd XI
Sydney Boys High 10/190 and 0/36 Pasan Pannila 63, Dhruv Gupta 53, Ryan
Mcdonald 1 &24*, Allen Fu 21, Lalitha Katupitiya 8&8*) Defeated Scots College 112 and 110
outright.
High continued in overcast weather, continuing to bat from last week with Dhruv and Pasan at the
stumps. Within a few overs, Pasan had hit his half century and within another over, Dhruv had hit
his half century. Two overs later, Dhruv had played a shot straight to point where it was taken
quite comfortably by the Scots fielder. With our team being seven down, Pasan made a great effort
and got himself to 63 where he then played a shot up in the air and got caught. Sending High out
to bowl, Shumit and Pasan had a great bowling attack taking out 4 of their early batsmen, which
included a spectacular super human effort from Samir Kinger who literally dived 3 metres forward
to take it one handed. Soon followed by a marvellous catch from Dhruv Guptaa with a front knee
slide, taking it comfortably in the hands. With a few dropped catches in the field we lost
concentration and they made a further 30 runs in the last 3 overs before finally dismissing them,
sending High out to bat again and we chased down the 30 required.
4th XI – Game was washed out.
5th XI
Kings 8/140 (20 overs)( Mark 3/21 4 overs, Michael 2/19 4 overs, Nicky 2/23 4
overs, Shabash 1 stumping- Jesse awesome catch) defeated High 5thXI 9/92 (20 overs)(Jason 39,
Andrew 16, Michael 14)
This game was one of the closest of the season, with High starting off with an early 2 wickets,
only to have poor middle overs, with a bowling fight back after drinks turning into our strongest
bowling performance of the season. Unfortunately our batting let us down with a middle order
collapse starting with a poor run out. A late fight back got us to almost 100. With some work in
the nets for our batting, there is a good chance for a win before the season is over.
16A XI
Scots 10/132 defeated High 6/121
Today we started off wonderfully at 3 for 103 Scots were looking dangerous and we needed to take
some quick wickets. Just when we needed them Visakan and Anirudh came in and tore through their
middle order with Anirudh taking 4 wickets and Visaken taking 4 wickets to have them all out for
132. We started our innings terribly with Kritman, Anup and Agnesh getting out in the first 5
overs. Then Shiv and Thilan had a little partnership of 20 before Thilan was caught at short
cover. In came a determine Safat and Shiv and Safat survived two drinks breaks before Safat got
caught at mid off after scoring 26. We lost a couple of quick wickets before Shiv and Visaken
took it into their stride to bat out the whole day. At the end of the day Shiv ended up with 50
not out and Visakan 11 not out. With High at 6 for 121
16B XI
Sydney Boys High 4/75 Luong 36 Puvanendran 17 Joseph 10 defeated Kings 74
Luong 2/3, Chen 2/17, Liu 2/19.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bowl, High got off to a good start with a wicket in
the first over. High tore through the first 6 wickets without a run to the bat. As the next
batsmen came in High needed to keep the energy up to restrict the opposition to a low total. A
partnership of 33 had Kings back in the game, but the bowlers were patient, held their line and
length, and finally had Kings all out for 74 with solid fielding. Going into bat, opener Jian was
unlucky to catch an edge down leg to the keeper in the first over. However, the remaining batsmen
held their heads, with Luong capitalizing on a drop catch to contribute an aggressive 36. The top
order kept the strike and the scoreboard ticking over and after a short rain delay, chased down
the target with Puvanendran scoring the winning runs with a hard and flat 6. A convincing win
boys!!
16C XI – No report issued
15 A XI – No game BYE
15B XI
High 4/103 off 20 overs Aditya Koneru 41, Lasith De Fonseka 21, Jesse Cooper
14 defeated Kings 8/92 off 20 overs Sai Vimalanathan 1/10, Haotian Zhang 1/15, Jackson Huang
1/16
After agreeing to play a Twenty20 match, High won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that
would prove difficult to score on. A solid opening partnership off 33 between Lasith and Aditya
laid the foundation for High's innings, allowing the remaining batsmen to put the pressure back
on the bowlers and fielders by running very aggressively, as boundaries were very hard to come
by. Through this aggressive running, High was able to score a very important 37 runs off the last
5 overs and went in to their bowling very confidently. Kings began their innings very positively,
going hard at anything short or wide and were scoring at a run ball for the first 4 overs.
However some changes in length brought High back into the game and wickets began to tumble as the
batsmen struggled to adjust to the slowness of the pitch, with High restricting Kings to 3/28 off
the last 8 overs, ending up victorious by 11 runs.
15C XI
High Won with 3/172 Jesse 59, Sunchit 30, Tushaar 28 defeated Kings 6/110
Alan and David 2 wickets each
The game was a 20/20. Kings won the toss and they elected to field first. Our openers got 53 runs
for us with the opposing teams giving us a few wides and we lost our first batsman at 1/66. Aaron
hit many singles playing it safe and a 4. Sunchit on the other hand played attacking and got four
4's and a massive 6! This eventually led to his downfall with him being caught. Jesse then came
in and played massive shots and made 6 4's and also 6 6's! This was also his downfall after being
caught. Tushaar and Alan kept the pace going with Tushaar getting 3 6's and 2 4's. Alan made 2
4’s.
14A XI
Scots – 10/277 (56.3) DREW with Sydney High – 8/219 (70)
Sudarshan Arvind – 37, Marc Betbeder – 35, Raunak Sura - 25 (not out), Varunan
Murugananthan – 22, Vishnu Avudainayagam – 17, Niyazul Bari – 15, Kevin
Robinson – 14.)
We started off the day in a wonderful fashion, Marc proceeded to make 35 before he was caught and
we reached 3- 65. Vishnu and Sudarshan took High to 4- 122 by the next drinks break. Soon after
drinks Sudarshan was out LBW and Varunan came to the crease. Varunan and Vishnu batted well
taking us to 5 -163. Here Vishnu was run out for 17 and amidst the confusion Varunan was caught
for 22. Here at 7- 165, Raunak played an incredible innings playing 98 balls and scoring 25. He
was supported by NIyazul who made 15 and Thomas George who stayed in for 5 overs holding us out
for a draw. Tahmeed who generally opens was very kind in standing down at 11 to allowing others
to have a chance. In the end we made it to 8- 219 a good draw, but if it weren’t for the
silly run out we may have done better. Great game Boys! Thanks again to Anthony Allingham for
coming to the game and supporting us.
14B XI
The Kings School 10/145 Raycole Dai - 1/19 Anthony Huynh - 3/13 Niyaz Mostafa
- 2/10 Shreyas Pulapaka - 2/16 defeated Sydney Boys High 10/105 Anthony Huynh – 23 Kevin
Dang – 14 Shreyas Pulapaka – 13.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl High began well having Kings 2/12 after 5. However a
drop in the standard of fielding and bowling saw Kings lift the run rate get to 2/100 (15). High
managed to fight back and take the final 8 wickets for just 45 runs. High began disastrously with
the bat, slumping to 4/12 in the 3rd over. Impressive hitting by Kevin Dang and Anthony Huynh
rescued the innings and saw the score pass 60. Although the required scoring rate became too
great a task, the team did well to pass 100 at a more than competent run rate of 4.3. The slight
improvement required in fielding, line and length bowling and match awareness will see the team
chasing easier scores of at least 20-30 runs less.
14C XI
Sydney Boys High 3/88 Alif Khondaker – 20, Niroshan Selvakkumar - 18*,
Ian Zhou – 17 defeated The Kings School 8/83 (21) Yilun Zhou - 2/10 Siddarth Subramanium -
2/0 Sharek Khan - 2/4 Anthony Taing - 1/2
After winning the toss and electing to field, High began disastrously with Kings racing to 1/30
after 4. Impressive swing bowling by Siddarth Subramanium and some tight line and length by the
support bowlers saw the run rate reduce and wickets being taken. High went to the main break with
the momentum as Jimmy Zhou seized on a tough slips catch on the last ball of the innings. High
never looked under any real threat in their innings as Alif Khondaker and Ian Zhou steadily
pushed the score along. Niroshan Selvakkumar finished the game with a bang, hitting a six to seal
the victory!

The BNO team has put together a terrific menu for us all to enjoy at Big Night Out – 5.00pm
Sunday 27th March – two and a half weeks away! Tickets for our only whole school family
event are now on sale at the General Office. $20.00 each now or $25.00 at the door. Send your boy
to school with your ticket order.
We would like to pre-sell as many tickets as possible so we know how many people we are catering
for. Your whole family is welcome – terrific value with 3 courses and a full schedule of
entertainment including music, dance, theatre and games for just $20.00 a head - BYO drinks or
available for purchase on the night.
The success of Big Night Out relies on the whole school family pitching in to share the many
cuisines on offer. In the menu below, are the contact details for the parents who are
coordinating each of the food stations. We really need your help now to make sure we have
enough food to share.
Have a look at the menu and make contact with one of the parents below to tell them what you can
contribute or cook and when you can bring it. Something as simple as flat breads for the Greek
BBQ, vegetables prepared for the BBQ or your specialty cake. Keshani, a Year 12 parent from last
year, is coming back again to help us by coordinating the curries but she needs her team of
cooks! 10 people making a curry for 10 will get us there.
You may even like to add something the BNO team hasn’t included. Donations of food are more
than welcome and we can also reimburse for the cost of preparing meat curries, lamb, etc –
just keep your receipts and give to your coordinator on the night. Each of the food stations also
needs a team of parents to help serve and check tickets on the night. Please contact the parents
below to nominate a time that you could help out during the night. The more the merrier.
We really look forward to seeing as many families as possible on the night – and we need
your cooking skills!
