High Talent
Congratulations to Jerry Phillipson and the Community Service team who collected $2214.75 for the Queensland Flood Appeal. This money will be added to a parking day collection to help restore facilities in Queensland schools. Thank you to all the boys who attended the ‘Convo at Clevo’ session. This is a great way to help people in the local community build confidence in their conversational English skills.

ACARA - My School website
As from next week, the ACARA My School website will go live, with a suite of extra features and updated statistics. Of particular interest is the financial data which tries to equate the various aspects of government school funding, such as: staff salaries and support staff wages, cleaning, staff on-costs, property maintenance and apportioned Central Administration costs, with those sustained by non-government schools, excluding boarding. In 2009, it stated that recurrent income per student at High from all sources was $11,407. Capital expenditures were $1,301,855, including $252,221 provided from school funds.

NAPLAN test results are now compared from Year 7 2008 to Year 9, 2010. The results are displayed in the various skills in graphs, in numbers, in student gain (in band terms). These results are plotted beside Statistically Similar Schools and against Australian schools as a whole. In the Similar Schools reporting, our school’s performance is compared to statistically similar schools. All the schools displayed were ‘substantially below’ the school’s average in numeracy (Years 7 & 9). One caught up in Year 9 grammar & punctuation and spelling, and one surpassed us in reading and writing by Year 9.

There is significant hype in the community about the enriched data about to be displayed on My School. Parents will find considerable information about our school on this site. However, much more information is available in our Annual School Reports and on our website. Our aim is to be transparent about everything we do.

Lak Saviya Foundation
The Lak Saviya Foundation is the Year 10 community service project. The Foundation’s aim is “to uplift the economic and social standards of the needy in a sustainable manner”. Its slogan is: Helping the needy to help themselves. Its focus is in Sri Lanka where it recently donated 50 bicycles to a new village without public transport and thirty-six hospital beds for Jaffna General Hospital. Each year, Year 10 students raise money to help the Kahawa Rathanasara Maha Vidyalaya school, devastated by the 2004 Tsunami. Internet facilities were connected last year enabling the school to communicate with boys at High, thanks to the generosity of High boys. The current project is to help fit out a school library. I urge Year 10 boys to make an effort to raise money for this worthwhile cause and to maintain the links with students who are learning to master English and the Internet simultaneously.

Budget Seminars
Thank you to all the 35+ staff and parents who gave up their time to come and learn about how the school’s finances are managed and to appreciate how we can work cooperatively to deliver the best quality and most comprehensive programs possible, without overspending negotiated budgets. My thanks to Sharon Kearns for designing the monitoring spread sheets that all program managers and treasurers will use to monitor income and expenditure for their activities. Valerie McKinnon has emailed the worksheets and amended the files once Program Managers sent them back. The next step is to fill in and return the spread sheets that will be sent out by email after the 20th of this month. By next week I will have completed an update of the whole school finances and this will be loaded onto p:\ drive finance 2011 for access by staff and in the ‘Program Director’s Repository’ for access by offsite personnel.

When the CEPS statement comes in towards the last week of each month, data on wages transactions for each activity will be available, once the information is processed by Mr Dowdell and Ms White in accounts. For queries about wages from the transaction lists, Program Managers and Treasurers can email Valerie McKinnon who will send a worksheet attachment with a breakdown of all transactions for the month for that activity. Let’s work together to do the most we can but within our means!

Peer Mediation at SBHS

Hey got a problem? Get peer mediated!
Peer mediation is a program run by a select group of Year 11 students which seeks to solve conflict between students without getting teachers involved. The program seeks to help the students resolve their issues while under the guidance of the Year 11 students. The program is confidential and stays between the peer mediators (Year 11 students) and the students who have a problem with each other.

How it works
When two students have a disagreement they are to email the following address: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   requesting a Peer Mediation session. From this point Ms Barr will receive the request and will appoint two Peer Mediators to accompany the disputers in a closed off room, whereby the two students will eventually resolve their problem and sign an agreement to not create more problems with each other.

The Debating Season begins

The debating season began last week with SBHS debating Scots College. The education debates ranged from Should Cyber bullying be the responsibility of schools? to should Public School teachers get performance based pay? Whilst the Juniors lost each of their debates, our Seniors did very well with Years 10, 11 and 12 winning each of their debates.

It was good to see some of the younger debaters watching the older boys. This is something I would really recommend, as they can learn so much from our more experienced debaters.

The coaches and either myself or Ms Quick attend the debates and it is great to see some parents attending. This is a great way to show your support of the Debating program at High and to support your sons.

Nominations are invited from those members who consider themselves fit enough and having the necessary skills for the 2011 Adventure Training Award. They need to complete the nomination package and lodge at the Orderly Room NLT COB HT Parade 15 Mar. The ATA assessment will be held in the Buckland Army Training Area, Tasmania over 16 – 23 Apr. We have done well in this assessment in recent years and cadets aged 16 or over are urged to consider nomination for the assessment.

The assessment IS tough and arduous. Those cadets who succeed at ATA wear their badge with justified pride.

Year 7 Camp

Last week the year 7 students went off to The Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens for their orientation camp. Thankfully the weather held up and ended up being perfect conditions for three days of action up the coast.

The boys were involved in a number of activities to challenge them and expose them to things they may not have experienced before. These included:

• Abseiling
• Sailing
• Leaping from vertical poles
• Ropes courses
• Raft building challenges
• An obstacle course in mud and water
• The giant swing

Amongst all these activities, the boys managed to meet many of their peers and start to develop friendships with those across their year group. With more outdoor education activities for them to be involved with in coming years, the boys will have many more opportunities to get outside and challenge themselves in rewarding activities with their new friends.

Tennis Report: High vs Joeys

Tennis report High vs. Joey’s High tennis continues its winning streak and convincing form, by defeating Joeys 10-2 on Saturday. High tennis is now coming second behind The King’s School. Conditions were difficult on the day. The wind was swirling making it difficult to adjust and the sun was more demanding than expected. So we were pleased to have such a great start with winning all three doubles a feat that high has not been experienced in a long time. We all walked into each singles match feeling that extra advantage from being up 3-0. Patrick and Frank were first to dispatch their opponent; though their opponents weren’t very strong. An easy match does boost their confidence a great deal. Lachlan who had played three setters in the past two rounds demolished his opponent with a 6-0 6-1 win. George had a good win on Saturday, he found himself up a set and down 5-3 at one stage of the match looking at a long three setter but came back to win the match 7-5 giving us a 7-0 lead on the day. Unfortunately Robert and myself lost our matches and as a result ruining “David’s perfect score card”. But it wakes us up before we play the harder teams, Robert and I will be putting in a lot of hard this week to redeem ourselves this Saturday against Scots. This is an important match as Scots are coming third but we feel confident we can make that gap between 2nd and 3rd larger.

Fitness Assessment February 2011

The PDHPE Department has again assessed the physical fitness levels of our students, Years 7 – 10. The most important health-related test is the 1.6km run for cardiovascular endurance. Our standard Moore Park West course was used for the assessment.

An assessment of 90% or better required a student to run the 1.6km in a time of 6 mins 30 secs, approximately, depending on the age of the student. An assessment of 50% or better, required a time of between 7 and 8 minutes, depending on age. A result of 10% or less means the 1.6km run was completed in a time greater than 9 mins 30 seconds. Each student in Years 7 – 9 should have a copy of their assessment schedule and results for February 2011 in their PDHPE theory books. Parents are encouraged to review their son’s results with them.

There were some outstanding performances again this semester including, Elias Hall (7S) 6m 41s, Wesley Beare (8.6) 6m 04s, Eugene Lee (9.1) 5m 24s, Jonathan Clements-Lendrum (10.1) 5m 14s.

It is interesting to compare a Year group over time against themselves, as well as against previous Year groups. It would appear that Year 10 is fitter than when they started in Year 7 but not as fit as when they finished Year 7.

Again this year there is an incentive for boys to achieve and maintain a higher level of aerobic fitness. If a student can reach his personal goal time on the fourth 1.6k run or run under 6 minutes, he will receive an extra 10% towards his final PDHPE grade which equates to one assessment grade. Each student should be aware of their goal as they are posted in Room 901. Hopefully every student will take advantage of this opportunity.

Sydney Boys High School Vs. Shore and St Joseph College

MIC Cricket Report
Our 1st XI fought hard against a strong Shore team. Congratulations to S Sooriakumar for the terrific 1st innings bowling figures of 5 – 33. The 1st XI has played well each week and was able to dismiss the opposition in their last two games for 108 and 83. This placed the team in a winning position each week and they are always giving the opposition a competitive game. They are a young and talented team and won their first Davidson Shield game by being convincing winners over Alexandria Park. The U15A team had a fantastic win against the Shore School last game. Congratulations to Ned Anson who scored his second century this year and to Jesse Cooper who scored 82 runs. Together the boys made over a 200 run partnership and passed the Shore total of 235 with only 4 wickets down. This team also had the better of Riverview and Iggies were lucky to come out with a draw. Our 4th XI still remain undefeated after 10 games against all the GPS Schools in their competition. This is a great effort! A special mention to the SBHS 5th XI, U14A and the U13A teams who also played strongly against Joey’s/Shore last week. Well done to all of our cricket teams for your effort over the last couple of games. I hope you are all looking forward to the Annual Cricket Dinner on the 30th of March. High set about trying to keep Shore batting as long as possible. With Shore at 2/98 at the start of the day in reply to our 76, Aadil Ansareen and spinner Sai Sivayogarayan produced an opening spell that had the Shore coach in disbelief. Shore was only able to score 12 runs off 10 overs, losing 2 wickets in the process. Declaring at 8/166, High set about chasing down the deficit. Lahiru and Al started strongly; however, we lost two quick wickets. Then came to the crease Daniel Smith and Aadil Ansareen. Both batted with great confidence and composure to see High get to 4/76 at tea, almost having wiped the deficit. With Daniel on 42 and Aadil on 12, after the tea break High lost 6/10. Unfortunately the tail was unable to support Kumudika who attempted to bat out the day.

We won the toss and chose to bowl, having them 3/10 with Ishmam having 2/2 from his first few overs. With 32 overs to chase the runs, our main concern was holding wickets. Ishmam made a quick 23, but with our top order dismissed cheaply we were 4/55 after 10. Kevin and Shimon then dug in and put on over a hundred runs in the next ten overs to ensure victory. Kevin played brilliantly for 43no and Shimon made 57no. Another win for the mighty 4ths to keep our undefeated season going.

5th XI - Shore 6th XI - 5/119 defeated-Sydney Boys' 5th XI - 7/118 Jason PHAM – 39, Nicky PINIDIYA – 18, Francis LIN – 18. Suman PRUSTY - 2/20 (3), Jason PHAM - 2/26 (3), Lawlex CHUNG - 1/24.
High looked steady with the bat early, losing only 1 early wicket, before Pham got the scoreboard going with a quick 39. A patient middle order allowed the team to amass a respectable total of 118 with the loss of only 7 wickets. Aggression with the bat was much improved and, paired with appropriate shot selection and technique, could see this side reach even higher totals. In the field the attitude was much more positive and this showed with the team getting 5 good wickets with only 7 sundries given away. While Shore chased the total down, this new found accuracy from the bowling attack could see opponents restricted to lower totals for the rest of the season.

We were outclassed by a few Shore players including a special leg spinner and keeping which saw 9 wickets and 4 stumpings. Although we were disappointed with the end result, we are encouraged by our clear understanding of how to improve and move forward. The team has agreed to address our preparation for the next game by learning from this defeat.

16B XI St Joseph SJC 5/180 def. HIGH 51/10 (V.Bhakri 2/26, R.Chen 2/25, and A.Joseph 28
Joeys won the toss and batted on an absolute belter, but tight bowling from the start put High on top as Joeys entered the first break at 3/63. Two quick wickets soon followed and High were right on top. Vasu Bhakri (2/26 off 5) and Ricky Chen (2/25 off 6) were the pick of the bowlers. But a 6th wicket stand allowed the total to blow out for them to score of 180. We tried our best with our batting, but their bowlers were too good on the day.

16C SJC 6/173 defeated SBHS 9/72 (Peter 18n/o, Burton 10, Kevin 8, Sunchit and Jackson 2 wickets each)
The match started with Joeys winning the toss and electing to bat. Jackson destroying the first wicket boosted our morale, but the game continued at the same rate. We lost a wicket almost immediately in the third over. The team rallied and tried their best to stem the very good bowling attack.

15A XI SYDNEY HIGH 15 As 4/235 defeated Shore 234 ( N.Anson 115*, Cooper 82 )
It was a great partnership of over 200 runs between Ned and Jesse that won the game against the Shore team with a great display of batting. We were able to dismiss the opposition last week for 234 on the small McKay 2 field. A great team effort! The team is playing some terrific cricket and we all enjoy playing each week.

Despite Joeys amassing 210 runs, High's bowling and fielding effort for the large part was very promising on a very small ground. The standout bowler was Michael who bowled the spell of the year, at one stage having 2/0 off 3 overs. Along with Sagar and Sid, they both brought High back into the game as Joeys collapsed to 8/110 with the batsmen having trouble with anything that wasn't gun barrel straight. Unfortunately some late hitting allowed Joeys to put on 100 runs for the last two wickets and wrestle back the momentum in their direction. High's innings got off to the worst possible start with Sam and Sagar being dismissed in consecutive balls to leave High at 2/6. This set the tone for the innings, with High losing wickets consistently to eventually be dismissed for 69.

When Vishnu A and Thomas G were at the crease High really looked to stop any flurry of wickets. They managed to hold it out until the next drinks break as we reached 3-84 after 32 overs. Then a great deal of misfortune occurred as Thomas was run out after making an amazing 8 off 51 balls a brilliant debut for our team. Realising the task at hand Marc B and Varunan M both generally aggressive batsmen controlled their game and played beautifully putting the team at ease and leading us to 7-142 at the final drinks break. We were all out for 159.

14C XI St Joseph’s 1st Innings - 7/143 Mike Liu - 3/17 (6), Yilun Zhou - 2/15 (6) - def.-High 2nd Innings - 7/68 (32) Alif Khondaker - 28 After winning the toss and electing to bowl, High faced a barrage of heavy hitting with Joeys reaching 51 after 6. However a great comeback through the tight bowling of Mike and Yilun saw High recover, conceding only 25 runs in the next 10 overs. High continued their accurate bowling and were able to restrict Joeys to 143 after 32, a run rate 4.4 an over. However, the total was too great as High struggled to keep up with the required scoring rate. Alif was the standout with the bat with his score of 28 containing many singles (the key to chasing big targets). The team can be proud of batting their allotted overs, the manner in which they bowled to their field and strategies.

13A XI St Joseph’s 160 vs. High 129 on McKay 3. T.Nimac 3/14, H. Puvanrenthiran 28, J.Pope 24. This was another big improvement on our team performance from last week. The High team kept Joey's total down on a small ground to have them out for 160. High started their batting well by being 0/42 and 2/92 before a middle order collapse. This team is starting to come together and enjoy their cricket immensely. It is great to have an enthusiastic group of parents each week who get behind the team and special mention to Mr Nimac for scoring and Mr Pope for helping to umpire. Trainings have been changed to Monday afternoon at 3.30 – 4.45pm

13B XI St Joseph’s College (5/183, Louis Shtein 3/26 (4 overs) Ihsan Mohamed 2/35 (5overs)) defeated High 2/75 (Nafis Rahman 25 retired, Fayez Bin Alam 16 retired, Taj 5) Having lost the toss with Joeys electing to bat, High was looking towards putting on a much improved bowling and fielding performance. The fielding practice during the week definitely paid off as High took the majority of their catches in the outfield. Special mentions must go to Louis and Ihsan for their tight line and length bowling. In reply, High were once again patient and disciplined with their batting, rarely producing any rash and unnecessary strokes. Once again the opposition were unable to bowl us out as we accumulated 75 runs with the loss of only two wickets.

Sydney Boys High School Sailing

The second weekend of the Tri Series was sailed on Saturday 26th. Very light conditions with wind under 5 knots provided difficult conditions for sailing early in the morning, and shifting winds made for a difficult course.

Three races were sailed in both the Pacers and Laser classes. High was represented by six boats in the Pacers and one in the Lasers. In the Pacer races, High had a range of results from podium places and tail-end finishes. A bit more consistency would be hoped for but overall, the sailors did fairly well.

Connor Robinson was a standout not only within the High boats but the whole Pacer fleet, finishing all three races with great places and textbook racing. Later on in the morning a light north easterly blew in making racing slightly easier however the course remained difficult. Poor starts and some bad decisions on the upwind legs saw chances for better results go to waste in the Laser fleet. In both classes, we need to improve our technical sailing to see better results in these tricky low wind conditions.

High takes on Scots this week which looks to be an extremely exciting game and so if you’re at Scots, don’t even hesitate to think about whether you should go, just get to their gym to support our First Grade and Second Grade teams, starting from 10:00! A win for our First Grade team could seal the GPS premiership for the season!

Mr Hayman’s Team of the Week - The 15As!!!
Supporting the Juniors is important; Byron Chen knocked down six of his eight shots and got the team off to a good start, before Nathan Sutton was on fire knocking down two big three point shots giving Sydney Boys the lead at the end of the first half. With ten minutes remaining in the second half, Joey's had fought their way back to tie the game 29-29. Then Mitchell Flynn, the team’s high scorer caught fire, hitting the team’s last four shots. Three of his shots were three pointers making a total of seventeen points for him. They defeated Joey's 55-37.

High's come from behind draw was helped by the addition to our squad this week of Shaun Fletcher and Shaun Pak. The extra numbers gave us the last quarter edge to come back from 4-1 down. The match began quite evenly but High failed to convert while Knox took an early lead. They took advantage of holes in our defence which was at first below standard. Down by a margin of 3 at the change of ends, we needed to tighten our defence while staying in touch with the score. This cause was helped with some envenomed shooting from Brendan Hancock to open the second half. However, each time we found the net and seemed to get back in the game, Knox were quick to open the margin back up.

We were unable to get within a goal of them until the last minute, when it seemed unlikely we could stage a comeback. The offensive teamwork between Brendan, Samuel, Jeremy and Oliver managed to produce two last-minute goals even as Knox put all effort into hanging on. It was another promising result leading into the Sydney East group stage of the CHS knockout, which takes place in 2 weeks’ time.

16s v St Joseph’s College
Won 5 – 3
Saturday’s game against Joeys was very eventful for the 16s Water Polo team. Expecting things to go the same way as every other game, we were down 0–2 at the end of the 1st quarter. Things, however, began to change during the next two quarters where we were able to level things 3-3 with one quarter to go.

Feeling energised and motivated by the prospect of our first win we kept fighting and were able to maintain the majority of possession for the final 7 minutes of play. Only giving up the ball a handful of times, Eric Li managed to evade some tricky defence and score. Finally a scoreboard where we were in the lead!

With only a minute to play Darren Chien swam his way up the pool and cemented our victory with a very smart goal. It was a great team effort but special mention must go to Eric and Darren for scoring the goals and to Andrew Fong for his brilliant debut in goals.

Congratulations on a well-deserved win, let’s keep the momentum rolling for the final 4 weeks of competition.

Shore Regatta Results
All Years 8, 9 and 10 crews competed in this regatta at Hen & Chicken Bay with mixed results. The Year 8 quads definitely showed some improvement as they became more familiar with the weekly racing. With two Year 9 1st quad rowers out, and a few other Year 9 boys sick, crews had to be rearranged which affected results across the squad. On the other hand, we had both Year 10 Eights racing this week. Unfortunately, no margins or times were recorded this week.

Sydney Rowing Club Regatta Results
Our 1st and 2nd School Eights raced at SIRC for the last time before the Head of the River. The times were a little slower than the previous week but areas for improvement are identified.

This Week, Saturday 5th March - Joeys Full Regatta at Iron Cove.
All Junior and Senior crews will be racing at Iron Cove this Saturday. They will need to be at the sheds on time as they have a longer row to the start line. The official parent spectator area with commentary, programs, coffee and barbecue is at Rodd Point, off Henley Marine Drive.

It is a very special opportunity to celebrate the efforts and achievements of our boys as well as acknowledge staff, coaches and supporters.

All crews will be introduced on the stage and there will be speeches by -

SBHS Cricket will celebrate the 2011 cricket season at the SBHS Cricket dinner on

Celebrate another fantastic year of basketball at High by organising your team to attend the 7th Annual Basketball Dinner and finish the year in winning style!!!

Every team will receive trophies for the Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player. 1 minute speeches will be made by staff members about their age groups and players will be able to show their thanks to them as well! The team with the best highlight footage of their season will show off their talent on the big screen. There will be a raffle and auction for huge prizes. Be there to win any of the following: Gourmet Food Safari Wine, Courtside Corporate Box tickets to the Sydney Kings last home game and more…..
