Orientation DayMany thanks to the students who participated in Orientation Day and helped our 2012 students and families feel welcome. It was great to see the large number of both junior and senior students become involved. The school tours were popular again this year and both the senior and junior tour guides did a wonderful job. I would especially like to thank the senior students who assisted our Administrative Staff in and around the Common Room. Your help was invaluable and allowed us to move through the enrolment process as quickly as possible. Once again, there were many compliments given on the evening by both staff and new families regarding our senior students. Thank you for doing such a fantastic job. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Mr Con Barris, Mr Jamie Kay, Ms Ingrid Hybler, Ms Mina Genias and our Program Managers and MICs for organising the students and activities. Thank you also to the staff and students who assisted with the set up for the day’s events and to our P&C parents who provided refreshments throughout the afternoon for our new families.
A special thank you must go to our Administrative Staff. Thank you for your hard work during the
long weeks of preparation and your fantastic efforts on what is our busiest day of the year. In

Julie Connolly Orientation Day Thank YouSachiyo James and Nina Liu coordinated the P&C catering for parents during Orientation Day last Tuesday. The P&C refreshment stall was a lively and welcome gathering point for parents and boys who will join the High Family in 2012 - a great first impression for newcomers. The Canteen stall right alongside was also a friendly and welcoming meeting place for new parents. The whole atmosphere was terrific. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped out on Orientation Day –new parents and boys felt very welcome and immediately joined in the friendly atmosphere. P&C Executive 2011-2012The P&C Annual General Meeting was held last Wednesday. Congratulations to the incoming P&C executive for 2011-2012:

Foundation Representatives: Ian Sweeting, Geoff Andrews, Julie Connolly The P&C Annual Report and Financial Statements were tabled. The 2010-2011 year has been a productive one for the P&C. Highlights and achievements include:
The time and effort expended by the P&C Executive is tremendously appreciated. Thank you to Geoff Andrews and Seh Hang H’ng (Vice Presidents), Anne Wall and Deborah Cassell (Secretaries) and Richard James (Treasurer) for their energy and support throughout the year. Thank you to Fabienne Ovadia (Student Wellbeing Committee Representative) and Ian Sweeting (Car Parking Coordinator) for their valuable contributions in these capacities. Sachiyo James and Nina Liu coordinated the P&C catering for parents during Open Day, Orientation Day and other P&C events with great warmth and enthusiasm. Jason Chen expertly coordinated the Parent Mentor Program with appreciative feedback to the P&C from incoming parents. Thanks to all. Year Group Parent Reps also attend P&C Executive meetings each month. Their contributions and support have been invaluable in assisting the P&C to identify specific Year issues. With input from Year Reps, the P&C now has in place an annual calendar for parent and school communications, which includes scheduled dates for each Year Group to meet with their Year Advisor. As a result of feedback from Year Reps, there is now increased time between subject selection meetings for parents and the student submission date for these choices, to allow family discussions about the importance and implication of these decisions for future studies. This year the P&C says goodbye to a band of very active and generous “retiring” parents as their sons complete studies at High. Fabienne and Charles Ovadia, Deborah Cassell and Seh Hang H’ng have all made enormous contributions in many capacities to the P&C’s work at High. Thank you so very much for all that you have done. You will be missed. Of particular note is the work of Charles Ovadia who initiated our ongoing annual whole School community event and pioneered the successful New Parent Mentoring Program. And above all Charles can always be counted on for a cool head and sage advice. Thank you to Fabienne for thoughtful and focussed work on the Student Wellbeing Committee and to Deborah and Seh Hang as tireless and supportive P&C executives over many years. P&C Funding Contributions to School ProgramsFull details of P&C income and disbursements to the School during the year are outlined in the Treasurer’s Report. However we’d like to acknowledge that the ongoing high level of financial support for School programs is made possible through the financial generosity of parents and through the giving of their time. Special thanks to the Canteen Sub-committee, led by “retiring” parent Katrina Morrow, who together with the permanent Canteen staff and our large group of parent volunteers, have delivered over $90,000 in disbursements this year. The dedication and energy of the Canteen team continues to produce outstanding dividends. Warmest thanks to Katrina Morrow for many years of enthusiastic and professional leadership of the Canteen Committee. P&C EventsThank you to the team of organisers and chefs for delivering another fantastic whole school community event. SBHS Big Night Out held in March, was a great success with food stalls, music and dance from many cultures represented in the School. This function brings together an enormous number of generous parents who may not otherwise have an opportunity to become involved in the school community. The event continues to be well supported by families cooking and donating food and families attending. February’s Welcome Information Night for new parents was also well attended. The P&C trialled a more formalised and informative New Parent Function to assist new parents in becoming immediately involved in the School community - putting an emphasis on the importance and benefits of co-curricular involvement for both boys and parents. Feedback was positive and Year 7 parents seem engaged with the school. Co-curricular Sub-committeesFrom the start of the year, P&C Sub-committees took on an expanded role in the financial management of Co-curricular programs, working closely with their MICs for improved management outcomes. These improvements are demonstrated with 10 of 14 Sub-committees providing annual reports and season reviews for tabling at the annual general meeting. In total, Sub-committees raised over $160,000 in car parking revenues to provide coaching, equipment and facilities for each activity. This revenue is down on last year with the loss of pre-paid Swans parking but we have taken steps to reverse this trend including the P&C being responsible for the financial administration of parking events from 1st December this year. Capital CampaignCapital Campaign 2011 has been low key, as the Working Party for our joint project with SGHS has focussed on steps to obtain government funding for the project. However a major initiative to change the method of asking for voluntary contributions for the joint project was approved by the P&C at the August 2011 meeting. This year and for at least the next two years, each family are directly asked to make a major capital works voluntary contribution to the SBHS Building Fund of $500 per year or join the monthly giving program at $50.00 per month. This method has already achieved greater contributions to the Building Fund than the level achieved in recent years. P&C ProjectsThe P&C Executive and Year Group reps worked hard through the year on several ongoing P&C objectives and projects that will carry over into 2012. These include:
The P&C has active representatives on key High Family governance bodies. The P&C was represented on the 探花视频 Foundation by Geoff Andrews as Chairman and Ian Sweeting. Sincerest thanks to them both for their contributions to the business of the Foundation managing Outterside Centre, Fairland Pavilion, the High Store and administering Great Hall and COLA bookings. Thank you to Charles Ovadia, Geoff Andrews, Jeanette Brokman, Deborah Dukes and Anne Wall who represented the P&C at School Council meetings. At Council, the P&C contributed a community perspective on various School policies and continued to work for improvement in cleanliness of school grounds. During the year, the parent community also participated on selection panels for the appointment of teaching positions within the School. There is a great level of cooperation and common purpose between Dr Jaggar, the School Executive and Staff, the School Council, the SHS Foundation, the SHS Old Boys Union and the P&C. We thank all of these individuals and organisations for their interest and support of the P&C throughout the year and look forward to our combined efforts during 2012. Thank you to all in the High community who have assisted in some way throughout the year. Every contribution great or small is vital, significant and valued. Our School community is noticeably and directly benefitted by your involvement.

Reading TorqueThis Is Not An Exit - ‘American Psycho’, a novel by Bret Easton Ellis When I first heard that Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel ‘American Psycho’ could only be sold shrink wrapped and for sale to over eighteens, I had to grab hold of a copy. ‘Naked Lunch’, ‘Lolita’, ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘Junky’ are all examples of transgressive literature that I have readily cherished. ‘American Psycho’ however is not the chef d’oeuvre that it is so easily labelled as. Patrick Bateman is a suave and psychopathic serial killer who stalks the streets of New York at night in search of a victim. He is narcissistic and materialistic and spends most of his time working out, killing, purchasing and eating. ‘American Psycho’ doesn’t have a beginning or an ending, there is no resolution and there is no “exit”. Instead we are given 400 pages of utter boredom. I admit there are flashes of genius contained within the leaves of this novel, but the reader has to wade through countless dinners, orgies, murders, inane conversations, band overviews and an exorbitant amount of various other minute descriptions. Having read Ellis’ other works I know that ‘American Psycho’ is a work of a genius, but is it a work of genius? It is possible that there is a covert Freudian analysis that I am missing? Unless I see it from the eyes of a well read, well-bred critic it is likely that I will never know. There has been a significant amount of furore surrounding this novel, both positive and negative; including numerous pleas by the women’s liberations groups and other scathing reviews that the book has introduced “serial killer chic” to the world. Most of this uproar however is simply hype. The murder and sex scenes are graphic but does this mean that other novels such as Vladimir Nabokov’s novel ‘Lolita’ (which has been described as a masterpiece of lyrical prose) be relegated to the banned books pile? Would we be no different to the Nazis, who burnt so called “degenerate” art and literature?
I recommend Ellis’ other works such as ‘Less Than Zero’ and ‘Lunar
Park’ because this novel is seemingly a novel written for the critics, rather than
something that is meant to be read and enjoyed by the general public. Just a final brief note to
Ellis, books are meant to be enjoyed not endured.
What’s up in the McDonald Senior Library?As we approach the end of the year activities in the Senior library tend to be focused largely on exam preparation and study. The Year 12s have now completed their HSC exams and are having a well-deserved break before they receive their results. They drift in to clear library loans and say hello reporting on their visits to the beach, plans for trips around Australia and for some, overseas, and searches for jobs. Some mention a strange feeling of abandon, disconnection and disbelief that their years at Sydney Boys are at an end. Already the next group of upcoming HSC, this year’s Year 11 students are conscientiously beginning their studies for their last year at Sydney Boys and Year 10 are completing the final School Certificate exams ever! Reminder to all students – Please return all overdue items this week. Library clearance sign off is necessary in order to receive school reports. The library has a collection of new books and DVDs to be put on display and some others have arrived and once processed will be added to our expanding collection. There should be some new fiction and high interest non-fiction titles to entertain during the summer break. So as soon as all overdue books have been returned most will be able to borrow during the holidays.

From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.

Music Notes Senior Strings PerformanceThe Senior Strings performed stunningly last Monday evening for the retirement celebration of Emeritus Professor Miraca Gross at the University of New South Wales. It was an honour to play for Professor Gross who founded and developed extensively the Gifted and Talented Program in Australia. Well done to all the boys in the ensemble for representing High proudly. Jazz Workshop & Concert in the CourtyardThere will be a Jazz workshop for our Jazz in the Courtyard concert on Sunday the 20th November. The workshop will be held from 1pm-3pm followed by the concert in the courtyard at 4pm. We invite you to come along and enjoy the afternoon with us, and also to please bring a plate to share. Music Awards AssemblyThe Annual Music Awards Assembly will be held on Tuesday the 22nd of November in the Great Hall at 10am. The Music Assembly acknowledges our Music students’ achievements and accolades throughout the year. We would like to invite you to join us in recognising the wonderful talents at Sydney High at the assembly. Spring Music FestivalThe Spring Music Festival for Orchestras, Concert Bands and Small Ensembles will be held on the Tuesday 22nd November evening at 6:30pm following the Music Awards Assembly in the Great Hall. We invite all families and friends to come along and enjoy listening to our large ensembles perform. Mr B.Hayman’s teams of the week; 14 As & 15s State Knockout side!The 14As had their first win! High 37 v Shore 32; Jerry Gek - 8pts, Jason - 8pts, Aiden Karahasan - 8pts All but one player scored in the game! High were up the whole game except for when there were 3 mins left and it was tied. A classy layup, then a free throw, then a final layup sealed the deal. We played the game the right way (SBHS way) with good rebounding and team passing to the open man to win the game. 15s Knockout team win the State Final!Westfield Sports High rolled out their superstar giants and we defeated them after losing to them by 30 points the previous day! Michael Chang, Stephan Bell and Jack Hutchinson out-rebounded and aggressively fronted in the post stopping a few nationally selected forwards, including a 6’6 Sudanese boy, from scoring. Aidan Thom defended a NSW TAP selected player, plus attacked the ring with reckless abandon. 15s Captain, Mitchell Flynn, and Finals MVP, Nate Sutton, controlled the game in the big moments. True character that can only be developed through SBHS sporting endeavour was on full display.

SBHS Rowing CommitteeSenior Head of the Parramatta ResultsLast Saturday 5 SBHS crews rowed a gruelling 4.5km time trial race down the Parramatta River, with 115 crews from many clubs and schools. Well done to those rowers, and results are below.
Melbourne High Exchange - Wed 16 to Sat 19 NovemberWe have had 28 Melbourne High boys rowing and racing with our Year 10 eights on the Parramatta River during this week. After Wednesday night, when all boys camped at the sheds, Sydney High boys billeted the Melbourne boys for the Thursday and Friday nights. Thank you to those families. Upcoming Events –

High TideSydney Boys High School SailingRound four of the Saturday Point Score Competition started with the one thing that had been missing in the earlier rounds, good, steady wind. High endeavoured to beat its benchmark of three top ten finishes per race out of thirty two Pacers. The highlight this week was the added competition to the Pacer fleet of one of the Ascham crews. Marcus James/Julian Edgtton were the best of the High sailors this week, including finishing 2nd after a reasonable start and having three top ten finishes. Ennes Mehmedbasic/Gavin Sutton were closely second overall with three top ten places, the best a 5th in the second race. They were unfortunately forced over the line early in the third start and had to start again, but their tenth place was a credit to their quick recovery in this race. Bart Daniels/Toby Funston sailed well in the early races with positive starts, but found themselves in a difficult position within ten metres of the finishing line and let six boats sail under them to the finish. The results for Week Four are summarised below.
Thanks to the other sailors who were reserves this week and to Mr Matsumoto for kindly driving them around to Rose Bay. Racing Rule of the week: ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012 Part 2: Section A, Rule 42 Propulsion Only wind and water can be used to increase the speed of a boat. No pumping, rocking, paddling, repeated tacking or no excessive body movement may be used to propel the boat.
