Die Deutsche FrageEin deutscher Staatsmann und ein Gericht mit seinem Namen – a German statesman and a dish that has his name – was the challenge last week. On Monday Vyaas Rajan (Yr 7), Wilber Koslowski (Yr 10) and James Goh (Yr7) had figured out that the Statesman had to be Otto von Bismarck and the dish “Bismarckheringe” – marinated herrings and definitely an acquired taste (you can get them in major supermarkets in the Eastern suburbs).

From the CanteenDid you know that …..
Both our President and secretary are finishing at the school this year, so it is important we have new people come onto the committee so the canteen operation continues to run smoothly. We are very fortunate to have excellent canteen managers and the committee essentially are there to help keep the canteen running in the best and most efficient way possible for the benefit of the boys and the school. The general committee help with stocktakes, assisting with volunteers, Open days etc. The positions of President and secretary are quite straight forward and involve doing High Notes, minutes of meetings etc. These are positions that do not take a lot of time as everything is in place to keep things rolling along so to speak. Being on the canteen committee is an indirect and easy way of helping make a significant contribution to your son’s education at high school. Please phone Canteen on 9360 4027 if you are able to help. Our next meeting is Friday 9th Sept in the Boardroom (Admin building) so please come along - we would love to see you.

From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.
The Governors' Centre for Excellence in EducationAn SBHS and SGHS Joint ProjectDear Parents, Staff and Students At last week’s School Council meeting followed by the P&C general meeting, parents and other members of the school community were presented with details of The Governors’ Centre for Excellence in Education, a joint project with Sydney Girls High School. The project is a major undertaking with an estimated cost of $8 million. The Governors’ Centre for Excellence in Education is a once in a generation opportunity to build a landmark facility to enhance the educational opportunities for current and future generations of students of both schools. To strengthen the joint application for government funding, both school communities need to demonstrate substantial financial commitment to the project. Each school has set a target of accumulating $2 million in its building fund. The Girls School is ahead of us in saving to reach their $2 million target. We need to catch up. The SBHS Building Fund currently has $1.1 million. The School Council and P&C considered many options to accelerate the accumulation of capital for this joint project. They have agreed that the school should introduce a voluntary contribution of $500 per annum for major capital works to be invoiced now for this year and at the start of Term III in each of the next two years, with the option for each family to pay $500 each year in a lump sum or join the monthly giving program at $50 per month. All contributions will be fully tax deductible.
You will shortly receive an information package for the project and an invoice for the voluntary
contribution. The High family and I seek your support. Together we can achieve our target and
build this landmark education facility. The Governors’ Centre for Excellence in Education is a once in a generation opportunity to build a landmark facility to enhance the educational opportunities for current and future generations of students of SBHS and SGHS.
SBHS DebatingThis week debating at St Ignatius was disappointing for many of our debaters. In particular it is a shame that Firsts and Thirds lost. However seconds continue with their unbroken record of success in GPS – which combined with their very successful run in both the FED, Eastside and PDC competitions means they are definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with next year. In addition there were wins from 7A, 8A, 9A, 9B and 10B – so well done boys. We only have two more weeks of debating left. Both of these are home debates: firstly against Grammar this Friday and Newington next Friday. Both events are keenly anticipated and I urge all Junior debaters (especially those with ambitions to be in the key teams in the future) to make a special effort to come as spectators for the Senior debates. One of the Year 10 parents was telling me that after his son had watched his first Senior debate his debating skills really improved and he says this is definitely due to seeing and listening to the older boys. I am in the process of allocating award points for debating. Students need to check on the Debating notice board to see that they have the correct number of points and see me if there are any mistakes. Twenty points are available for attending coaching regularly all year and then there are additional points for taking part in FED, Eastside, PDC, Les Gordon, UNYA and GPS comps and chairing debates – one per debate (either as a debaters or as chair). Those students who have helped me organise the home debates nights get 5-6 award points per night for community service. In total 30 points can be awarded for debating. This is the last week of coaching for non GPS debaters and I will be using it as an opportunity to check roles for award points. I must say that some Junior debaters have not even taken part in one debate (outside of coaching) this year. There is absolutely no excuse for this as, in addition to the huge number of competitive opportunities we provide, I have provided 3 opportunities for social debating against Reddam House, Rose Bay and SGHS. This suggests that some students are attending coaching just for the award points and I have a strong suspicion that these are the boys that don’t take the coaching sessions as seriously as they should. Next year I will be looking carefully at Year 8s and Year 9s to see which boys are not taking debating seriously and will ask them to leave the program (whether they have made or co –payment or not). Many of our coaches: Kevin Yu, Michael Coutts, Lucian Tan, Ellie Bath, Shaun Crowe, Nina Ubaldi, Blaise Prentice – Davis and Alice Dixon will be leaving this year. This is very sad for me and for the students as they are an extremely experienced and talented group of debaters and coaches. They promise me it was nothing I said! It is important that your son thanks his coach and says goodbye properly (whether they are leaving or not) and a good opportunity to do this is at the Debating Dinner.
Finally it is the school Open Day next Thursday and I would like some help for our promotional
stand from some debaters. Also if there is anyone with good computing/creative skills could they
please help me improve on the leaflet that we have. Thanks.

Music NotesHSC Music Showcase Concert & Visual Arts ViewingThe HSC Showcase Concert will be held next Tuesday (30th August 2011) in the Great Hall combined with Visual Arts Viewing from 5pm. We would like to invite you to attend this wonderful evening celebrating the talents of our Music & Art students. Art viewing will commence at 5pm followed by HSC Elective Music Students performing from 5:30pm and light refreshments served at the conclusion. Annual Music CampThe Annual Music Camp held last Tuesday to Thursday was a great success with over 150 students involved on the 3-day camp. All students rehearsed intensively with the music tutors and learned new challenging repertoire culminating in an exciting Camp Concert upon return. The evening began with the Training Concert Band making their debut and concluded with a combined finale of all musicians performing Orff’s Carmina Burana – O Fortuna which called for an encore. Thank you to all the parents (for organising the BBQ and feeding the boys), and music tutors and staff who helped in making the camp run smoothly and a huge success. Manly Jazz FestivalThe Senior Stage Band has been selected to perform at the Manly Jazz Festival this year on the October Long weekend. They will perform on Saturday 1st October at 1pm in front of the MANLY COUNCIL CHAMBERS which will be the YOUTH and COMMUNITY JAZZ stage. Over a hundred audition recordings were sent in to the selection panel and we are very proud to have our boys performing in one of top Jazz Festivals in Australia. JesterfestJesterfest High School Band Competition is on again for the third consecutive year. The events will be held at Winmalee High and will give bands the opportunity to showcase their place in the NSW Music Industry. Jesterfest is the campaign for the Erik Hausoul Sarcoma Foundation raising awareness on Sarcoma in general and Osteo-Sarcoma in particularly. Volleyball - Round 10This was the final round for the GPS Competition 2011. It’s become a tradition that our final match is played against Grammar, at home. It’s an old rivalry that brings out some excellent matches and great atmosphere. Saturday’s games were no different, with the added benefit of the junior competitions adding to the excitement. Grammar always puts its very best players against us and the match is far from a foregone conclusion. Grammar brought a very large Seconds squad to meet us. From the whistle it was clear that this team had some excellent players and were out to upset our winning streak. Points were hard fought for and it was only slowly that our Seconds managed to pull ahead, finally sealing the first set 25-15. A second, even closer set followed. It was clear that with their rotations they had a set of fresh players to call upon but we just managed to hold on to the set. A final set went our way relatively easily to see the Seconds again at the top of the ladder with 24 points whilst an increasingly strong Riverview claimed second place with 20. . If the Seconds game was going to be tough it was very clear from the outset that our Firsts had one of the biggest challenges they’d faced this year. Grammar stormed out to take the early points. High gradually pulled level and then ahead. This was soon reversed and from there on, the lead changed several times. Only a massive spike finished the first set in our favour when it could have easily gone the other way. The second set started as a repeat of the first with a strong Grammar lead slowly eroded to allow us to run out a more comfortable result. Set three, again a tough one was closed out quite effectively. For those who just look at the numbers it can seem like another easy High win but when you are playing on the court it is entirely different. Grammar, given a few errors on our part would have easily taken it out in 5 sets. The GPS competition is getting stronger and there are now few teams against whom we can feel relaxed. Talk of improving the coaching standards amongst other squads means only more pressure next year, not less. Amongst the excitement we mustn’t forget the juniors. They bring a huge amount of noise and excitement to a gym that can be eerily silent for some matches. It gives the teams great match practice as well as getting the sport into the junior levels – it’s an unmatched development opportunity for all schools joining in. This time, Grammar brought 2 squads with their ‘A’ team taking their match 3-2 whilst our ‘B’ team won 3-1. The statistical analysis of matches also finishes this round. It’s been a trial this year but a very successful one. It has identified key areas of strength and, more importantly, weakness so we can put our limited practice time to maximum use. Students can see how they are progressing and what they need to focus on. Off-season refinements will continue but this has proven to be of great benefit to us. Our final statistics are:
