Die Deutsche FrageAm letzten Freitag kamen die “High Notes” in der zweiten Stunde in die Klassenzimmer. (Period 2) Ganz viele Jungen hatten die richtige Antwort (very many boys …) Nelson Tang (Yr 10) war der erste Senior, Samuel Gallagher (Yr 9 – and he doesn’t even do German but he had some help from his friend!) der erste Junior und dann noch Wilber Koslowski (Yr 10) (he had spent the whole day at debating and only got the HN on his return) bekamen einen Schokoriegel. (At this rate I need a pay rise!) Die Antwort war: the German soccer team had removable studs on their boots, which could be changed according to the surface conditions, a new invention by Adi Dassler – who founded ADIDAS – and that gave them the edge over the Italians.

New in the Junior LibraryTo see these books in living colour you can read High Notes Online on the School Website. New books are all displayed and available for loan on either the new fiction stand or on the newspaper table if non-fiction. All books on the windows leading to the Library are new this year.

for books read in half a year from our Library: All of these boys are encouraged to enter the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Mrs Crothers will give you a print out of your loans this year to assist you as you pick up your certificates. She will enter all of you in the Challenge. You then log in (use only your name not your student number) and put your books in yourself. You will be messaged in class when your certificates and reading records are ready. The Governors' Centre for Excellence in EducationA SBHS and SGHS Joint ProjectA Capital Works Update from the PrincipalDear Parents, Staff and Students Following on from last week's announcement of the SBHS and SGHS Governors' Centre joint project, I would like to outline our past program of capital works and thank the school family for its generosity in supporting the program to date. The NSW Department of Education and Communities provides SBHS and other NSW public schools with limited annual funding for repairs and maintenance of existing school infrastructure and there is a waiting list for state government funding for new facilities. NSW public schools have adapted to this situation by engaging their school communities to raise funds for the additional capital works necessary to maintain and improve school facilities to a standard our students deserve. During the 11 years since 2000 SBHS has, through a combination of government grants, parent, old boy and community contributions to building funds, invested more than $2.3 million in capital works projects to improve facilities for current and future students. This completed program is a considerable achievement for which I thank each and every parent who over the years has made voluntary contributions to our building funds- often well beyond what the school has asked for. In addition, a further $1.1 million has been accumulated in the SBHS Building Fund, which has provided us with the opportunity to undertake major capital works projects such as the Governors' Centre. The school is currently in consultation with the various school family representative bodies to finalise our funding path for this project and I expect to be able to provide more details of the outcome of this consultation next week.

SBHS DebatingI am still aghast that many parents and debaters have not signed up for the Debating emails. I write these every week and it is my main way of communicating with debaters and their parents about important debating events, feedback on results and important information about teams. This week we had the opportunity to field a third Year 7 team, but nearly lost it because some students had not read the Teams email. A big thank you, by the way, to parents who brought their sons (and in Mr Chao’s case) another boy back to school to debate and to the boys who were flexible enough to move teams. Please sign up to the email by following the instructions at the bottom of the page. We debated Scots this week and I was very proud to see so many boys bringing in plates of food to share. Our supper looked and tasted great. Thank you to Nina, Eden and Norman who did a marvellous job of preparing things for us. I also wanted to thank my trusty helpers – Eamon and Shuming who did an excellent job assisting me on the night and thanks to Samson who stuck around to watch some of his rugby- playing debaters and also ran around opening doors which had mysteriously been locked. Our Year 11 PDC team debated in the Regional Final against Fort Street on Friday and won. Rumour has it that the following debate was to decide who would debate SBHS in the next round, which is at state level and that when the debaters heard that we had won they said “Oh no!”. Our reputation precedes us – Congratulations and keep up the excellent effort boys.
This week we are off to Riverview for our last away match of the GPS season and thus of the year.
The week after is the BIG debating event as we debate Grammar. The Great Hall is booked for the
First debate which will take place at 8pm. All are welcome and all Junior and Intermediate
Debaters who want to improve are encouraged to attend. GPS results of our competition against Scots this week.

Julie Connolly Report: P&C Meeting – Wednesday 17th August 2011We held a well attended and informative P&C meeting last Wednesday with the main agenda items being The Governors’ Centre for Excellence in Education - the joint building project with SGHS announced by Dr Jaggar last week – and discussion and voting on a proposal to alter the way in which the Capital Campaign works now. The deadline for High Notes submissions is Wednesday (before the meeting occurred) so a full report will appear next week. However, we would like to recap the proposal and discussions points for the P&C meeting that was held on 17th August. As you know our school needs more space. The Governors’ Centre for Excellence in Education project will give us more classroom space, an auditorium/lecture theatre as well as debating, teaching, music and drama rehearsal spaces. To strengthen the joint application for government funding, the school communities of both schools need to demonstrate substantial financial commitment to the project. Together, the two schools have set a target of $2 million accumulated building funds for each school. The Girls school is ahead of us in saving to reach this target. We need to catch up. The SBHS Building Fund has a current balance of $1.1 million. Proposal:

Basketball Committee AGM – Monday, 22nd August, 7:00pm - Room 901
The Onion BagFootball UnitedThose at the season launch will remember the presentation by Stuart Meney for Football United. Stuart emailed a request for donations. It reads as follows: Football United uses the magic of football to engage with youth and children in diverse communities in Western Sydney. We aim to build youth and community capacity, improve leadership and responsibility skills and, of course, facilitate free, regular football training. Programs run in Auburn, Fairfield, Granville, Liverpool, Blacktown and Airds supporting youth of refugee, recent migrant and Aboriginal backgrounds. Many youth and children are hindered in their pathway to regular participation due to the lack of equipment. Relying on grants for funding, Football United cannot provide a football kit for each of the 800 or so participants. We provide a t-shirt and shin-pads for each player. As such, with Sydney Boys High School's season coming to an end, Football United are hoping to source as many football boots of good quality that can be donated to some of our participants, as well as good quality shorts. All sizes are welcome. Donations can be made to Mr Gifford or Mr Mulroney, who can pass them onto Football United. Observations from the side line.1st grade suffered yet another agonising defeat, 2–nil, after dominating the early exchanges. Coach Hazrati had to field a weakened squad due to illness and injury and all boys should be proud of their determined effort for the full 80 minutes. Oliver Meroni was twice denied by outstanding one on one saves by an agile Scots keeper. Two opportunistic goals by Scots in the second half sealed High’s fate. The 2nd grade team let a 1-nil lead slip, losing 2-1. High’s goal was scored by Jon Ren from the spot. Fixtures this weekendThis Saturday is the last round of the GPS season. We have matches v Riverview as well as a variety of other schools. Check the school website for details. End of season reportsThis Saturday is the last match of the season. Captains are asked to submit their end of season report for the 2011 Record.
VolleyballRound 9This round saw us against Scots. The issues we had last week with Riverview had gone but we were faced with a new set: most of the Firsts were preparing for Trials and others were involved in other matches. Although this meant a lack of experience it did give the Seconds a chance to move up and also allow others to come into the team. In the end it was a good contest which all enjoyed. The Seconds started strongly and were soon a few points clear. Despite some very good attacks from Scots these advantages were not overcome and we ended up decent winners. Scots Firsts had more experience but they were also without their captain and key player due to an injury in training. The loss was felt by the visitors but they were going to fight for every point with a final score failing to demonstrate the more competitive nature of the game. These official games are often mirrored by junior squads. Some of our GPS schools, notably Grammar, have volleyball squads going down to Year 9 or even Year 8. This means that our junior players have the opportunity to get some match practice as well as have an enjoyable time. The shouts of support from these matches certainly add to the atmosphere in the gym which can be quiet without them. We can report this week that both Junior A and B teams beat their respective Grammar sides 3-1. This week the statistics introduce a number of new faces for both Firsts and Seconds. SBHS RugbyHigh Rugby = High SpiritSBHS Junior Rugby Camp During the recent holidays, SBHS rugby held its junior rugby camp at the Great Hall in what has since been described as ‘the best’ sporting camp ever. This new ‘standard’ of sporting camps saw 13s and 14s rugby players arrive at MPW on a Thursday afternoon to receive specialist coaching supported by the ARU. Following the insightful session, players made themselves comfortable in the Great Hall whilst dinner was being prepared. An obligatory Simpsons episode was shown on the big screen prior to a delicious meal of lasagne and fresh salad prepared by and with many thanks to Mr Hannon, Mr G Barris, Geoff and Nada Andrews. Trivia night followed which not only provided great entertainment, but also provided an opportunity for boys to further their rugby knowledge. A movie was shown afterwards before lights were turned off and murmurs continued late into the night. With another training session after breakfast, players experienced a camp which was fun and fulfilling. This team bonding event only furthered their development heading into term 3. Weekend ResultsRound 6 of the GPS competition saw High play Scots last Saturday. Given the rain that poured down on Friday, the fixtures weren’t looking too promising but on Saturday morning, the sun shone out with all its glory to produce a beautiful day perfect for rugby. Whilst Scots showed why they were becoming a true rugby powerhouse in the GPS competition, High played with spirit and energy showing body language that defied any score line. With little regard for the scores, players ensured their top priority was to have fun and enjoy playing together as a team. Some teams recorded excellent wins, others recorded competitive score lines. But regardless, the comments from parents on both sides were of encouragement and respect clearly demonstrating what High rugby is about. High spirit is alive and well – in the 14Bs, despite being 3 tries down with 10 minutes to play, refusing to believe the match was over, a ferocious maul saw Alex So score his 2nd try of match. This spirit lifted the team to almost score again off the kickoff. Although the team ran out of time, they demonstrated once again with the right attitude and spirit, anything is possible. Upcoming Fixtures – Final RoundBack to McKay Family day: This week we will be playing our last games of the season. All teams will be playing at McKay in what will be another fantastic day of rugby. So bring the family, bring some friends, meet other parents, take some photographs of the boys in action, have something to eat and drink from the canteen and BBQ and be a part of Family day at McKay! For the Year 12 players, it will be their last rugby game playing for High, so let’s create a memorable atmosphere with the biggest crowd of the season for the boys that have put on the High Jersey week in week out over the past 6 years. Those that witnessed the Grammar fixture earlier in the season must agree that a loud and supportive crowd can have a dramatic and positive effect on the players. Even if you are playing an early fixture, we strongly encourage all boys to stay back and support the 1st XV – award scheme points apply if you mark your name off at half time. Also, a reminder that players are often needed to ‘bench’ for other teams playing at later times so please plan your Saturdays with this in mind. Finally, if the weather is wet or threatening on Saturday morning, you should still go to the ground unless the match has been cancelled on the SBHS website . If there is any cancellation, the school will try to update the website by 7:15am.
SBHS Rugby DinnerThe Rugby dinner will be held in the Great Hall on Saturday the 27th of August 2011. However, as this is the same day as the Bledisloe, negotiations are currently occurring to organise a possible shift to an earlier start time to facilitate the live broadcast of the match on the big screen in the Great Hall immediately after the dinner. In the mean time, please write this in your diaries and plan your Saturday with this possible early start. WATCH THIS SPACE for any updates! Help celebrate another great year of High Rugby by attending this fantastic end of season dinner. We strongly encourage all boys AND parents to attend this great occasion. Payment forms have already been distributed, if you require another form - see Mr Stein in the PE staffroom. Get your payments in ASAP as maximum seating is only 220! Moment of the week:14 As – 23 words of colourful language were exchanged after a try was scored by the opposition. The proceeding 10 minutes of play was some of the best rugby played all season.
