From the OfficeLetters Re Absence/Lateness/Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Barris, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. LeaveIf you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.

Library Donations / ReadingThe Andrews Junior Library is very grateful to Christopher Ketko for his really thoughtful donation of Kevin J Anderson’s Metal Swarm. Christopher had read our series and enjoyed it and wanted the next book in the series so he bought it and read it and then very kindly gave it to us. The Andrews junior library is really grateful for any donations of books less than 10 years old. Paperbacks are very delicate and our wonderful reading boys read them to death. So far this year our High boys have borrowed 5605 library books.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is now finalising and all entrants need to put their
entries in on-line. Mrs Crothers will be verifying all books borrowed from this Library from your
on-line entries.
Basketball AGM

Music NotesAnnual Music CampThe Annual Music Camp will be held from 16th-18th August (Term 3, Week 5) at Vision Valley (7 Vision Valley Rd, Arcadia, 2159 – Phone: 9655-2600). ALL students in the Music Performance Program can collect a Camp Note outside the Music Staffroom. Please fill in the forms and return with payment to the Main Office by Monday 1st of August 2011 as numbers need to be finalised ASAP. Manly Jazz FestivalThe Senior Stage Band has been selected to perform at the Manly Jazz Festival this year on the October Long weekend. They will perform on Saturday 1st October at 1pm in front of the MANLY COUNCIL CHAMBERS which will be the YOUTH and COMMUNITY JAZZ stage. Over a hundred audition recordings were sent in to the selection panel and we are very proud to have our boys performing in one of top Jazz Festivals in Australia. Matthew Krel Prize for Orchestral ExcellenceCongratulations to Muhamed Mehmedbasic (OB 2008) who was a finalist in the prestigious Matthew Krel prize for Orchestral Excellence with over hundreds of entries from all over Australia and was featured on the SBS show In Good Hands last Sunday afternoon. New InstrumentalistsALL New Instrumentalists who began lessons on an instrument last term are encouraged to join the Training Concert Band (Woodwind/Brass/Percussion) and Junior String Ensemble (Strings) this term. SBHS DebatingWelcome back to debating in the second Semester and it certainly began with a busy Friday. We had our annual Debating Assembly to present the First and Second Debating teams. With the Thirds acting as MCs and Paul Hunyor coming to giving his address it was certainly an entertaining and very inspiring assembly. Thank you to Dr Jagger and Nakul who gave excellent speeches and thank you to the Chiam family who attended. We organised a bus to take us to Kings this year and that was just as well, with the rain and the Friday night traffic. I was able to watch the year 10As debate but, as with all our teams, they go the aff side of, to quote Lucian our year 10 coach, an “un-aff-able” debate: “That we should severe ties with China.” So basically all our A teams lost, but all our B teams (who were neg) won.
This week we are at Home. All Home Debaters and chair people are reminded to bring food for our
shared suppers. Please don’t let us down – we have a reputation, for holding the best
suppers, to uphold. Students can bring food to me during the day or parents can bring it in when
they come to watch debates. GPS Round 1 – 22/7/2011
Following the longest preseason of any sport offered at High, the GPS competition finally got
underway last Friday at Kings. After watching the juniors receive a stunningly one-sided topic,
the seniors prepared themselves for another unusual one. However, when revealed, the topic was
the almost-clichéd “That we should withdraw from Afghanistan”. 2nds and 3rds,
on the affirmative and negative respectively, made solid debuts, the Year Elevens stepping
comfortably up to the high level required in Seniors debating to turn out wins. 1sts also made a
strong start on the neg, with a win that we hope will contribute to a more successful season than
last year’s. This week marks our first home debate of the season, as we host Shore. I would
urge you all, both debaters and non-debaters to watch and support all our teams. COMPETITION THIS WEEKGPS 2: SBHS v Shore

Annual High Debating DinnerThe annual dinner to celebrate debating at High concludes the debating season. It is held the week after the final debate of the GPS competition. We are also thanking our staff and coaches for their great work on all of the competitions that High enters in 2011. This year’s Debating Dinner is on
Saturday 10th September 2011 The cost of the dinner is $30 per adult/student. A special price for children under 10 years has been negotiated at $20. Parents BYO. Payment for the dinner can be made at the main office by 2 Sept 2011. NO bookings can be accepted after this date as numbers must be finalised for catering. Drama FestivalLast Wednesday was our 2nd annual Sydney Boys’ High School Drama Festival. This festival included acts from years 7 to 11, ranging from scripted plays to physical theatre performances. These acts were worked on by all drama classes over term 2, putting in countless hours of work. Over 800 students and parents came out to watch over this two-day event through two matinee and one night performance. As soon as school started, the first day back on the Tuesday, rehearsals began to ensure that we were well prepared for our first performance. Ms. Rohr went all out this year with a complete stage setup, professional lighting and a smoke machine. It was a gruelling day with emotions running high, but we eventually got through every play’s practice time. Our first performance sneaked closer that Wednesday morning with last minute review to ensure everything would run smoothly. As the year 7 and 8 classes poured into the hall, the nerves ran high in the gallery as some people had never performed before, especially to a crowd of over 350 people. As the first act began, Year 10’s first physical performance, the energy kept growing through year 7 act, to year 9 “Mumming” plays, year 11’s scripted performance all the way until the very finale. That night, the performance was just as equally riveting and powerful that morning, with a strong turnout and high energy. The next day was no exception either, with year 9 and 10 offering positive reviews towards the plays performed.
Congratulations to all performers on the wonderful job they’ve done and the time and effort
they have put into their pieces of art. Thanks to all those that came to watch and support the
drama department. Thanks to Ms. Rohr who has put countless days into preparation for the day and
made all of this possible. Without her, none of this would have ever happened. This year’s
Drama Festival was a complete success. |

Julie Connolly Request for Helpers – Open Day, Thursday 1st SeptemberThe P&C provides morning tea and conversation with prospective High parents during Open Day. Open Day is Thursday 1st September, 9:30 am to 12:00pm. We need about 6 or 7 volunteer parents to help out on this day.
