High Talent
Well done to Brendan Kong (Year 9) who will represent NSW in the Ice Hockey Team at an International Friendship Tournament in Wisconsin, USA in June. Jordan Liang (Year 11) was placed second in the National ASX Competition for semester 1. A great result, Jordan! Congratulations to the Community Service Committee and the students and staff of SBHS & SGHS for their organisation of the fundraiser for UNICEF. Proceeds of $4866.05 can now go to a worthy cause. Thank you to all the boys who participated. Your behaviour on Moore Park West was a credit to you. Congratulations to Nakul Bhagwat (Year 12) who won the local final of the Plain English Speaking Competition. Congratulations also to Kushaal Vyas (Year 10) who won the Regional Final of Rostrum and has qualified for the State final. Last Friday evening our Year 11 and Year 12 debating teams were both successful – taking out their finals in the FED Competition. Well done boys! In last Sunday’s Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon, Francis Torok (Year 12) was the first male finisher U20 in a time of 1:14:29. A great run, Frank!

The National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022
What has been done so far?
The Commonwealth has a role in primary prevention of violence, in particular focusing on young people’s attitudes towards violence and risk taking behaviours such as binge drinking. Helping young people better understand and develop respectful relationships will have positive long term impacts. In April, 2009 COAG endorsed Protecting Children is Everyone’s Business – National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009-2020. In NSW the 5 year plan, Stop the Violence, End the Silence, launched in June 2010, aims to reduce the prevalence of domestic and family violence in NSW and increase community awareness that such violence is not acceptable. Its five key areas are: prevention and early intervention, protection, safety and justice; services and support; building capacity; and data collection and research. The National Plan provides the framework for action by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments to reduce violence against women and their children. It focuses on preventing violence by raising awareness and building respectful relationships in the next generation. The aim is to bring attitudinal and behavioural change at the cultural, institutional and individual level.

‘Australian women and their children live free from violence in safe communities.’ During the next 12 years the Plan has a target to achieve ’a significant and sustained reduction in violence against women and their children.

Indicators of success include:

• Reduced prevalence of domestic violence and sexual assault
• Increased proportion of women who feel safe in their communities
• Reduced deaths related to domestic violence and sexual assault
• Sustainable change must be built on community participation by men and women taking responsibility for the problems and solutions
• Reduced proportion of children exposed to their mother’s or carer’s experience of domestic violence

I think that leading boys schools such as High need to be at the forefront of awareness raising and skill-building to develop respectful relationships. We need to be sure that our culture has changed significantly and is aligned to the 2022 goals of the National Plan before 2014. Mr Walker will ensure that explicit training in respectful relationship building becomes part of our Values Education programs in the future.

Payment of School Contributions, Levies & Co-payments
I would like to thank the large majority of parents who have paid their school contributions, levies and co-payments, set by the P & C Committees, to engage in school co-curricular activities. However, in some summer sports such as tennis, the response has been slow. Co-payments allow us to pay for Coaching Coordinators, Head Coaches and accredited Coaches to teach and mentor your boys in their chosen activities. The benchmark for all co-payments is $100 per season. P & C Sub-Committees may invoice more than that if the needs of the co-curricular activity require it. The Sports Levy pays for the Head Teach Sport allowance, all the MIC allowances, wages processing, major equipment and student insurance, as well as GPS and CHS capitation fees and access to quality venues. The total of these costs far exceeds the money raised by the levy, causing sport to be heavily subsidised from general service contributions. Help us to deliver the standard of teaching and activities coaching that you expect by paying your son’s general service contribution and his levies and co-payments.

The Record - 2004
Thanks to the great work by our Editor, Lynne Williams, and with the assistance of numerous members of staff helping to identify faces from the past, the 2004 Record has been compiled and printed. We now have a complete set 2000-2010 and we also produced one from the previous administration – 1996. If you know of students or members of staff who were here in 2004, please let them know of The Record. Lynne is contacting all students that we have on file who left that year to try and distribute the publication as widely as we can. I want to thank all the editors and contributors who have believed in the preservation of our activities over the last eleven years. Your efforts have meant that High tradition has been maintained, allowing Old Boys, staff and parents to have a quality keepsake of their involvement in a great school.

Die Deutsche Frage Im April Un Mai - Die Gewinner!

Karsten Michael (Year 7) und Michail Schwarz (Year 11) haben die Mai und April Fragen richtig beantwortet: Im April war die Frage: Welche drei Länder (countries) in Europa sind “Weltmeister” (world champions) im Recycling? Die Niederlande (Holland) mit 64.4 %,Österreich (Austria) mit 59.3 % und Deutschland mit 57.2 %.

Die Frage für diesen Monat war: warum ist “Riesling” ein Oxymoron? (NOT because it is a “dry” wine) but for a grammatical reason: der Riese – is a giant, adding the ending “-ling” makes it a diminutive – a little giant.

Die nächste Frage: welcher australische Politiker ist mit einer Deutschen verheiratet?

G&T Conference

On Monday 16th May, High was represented by Christopher Chiam, Jonathan Clements-Lendrum, Matthew Delaney, Sikander Hussaini, Riley Irwin, Jaan Pallandi, Sooraj Prakash, Suman Prusty, Robert Sternhell, Safat Sufien Alexander Weinstock and Calum York at a Gifted and Talented conference hosted by Ascham.

The aim of the presenters was to provoke thinking and they did. It was very confronting to be asked ‘How do you know that you are not a brain in a vat?’ It was a challenge to accept the lecturers warning that if, at the end of her presentation we thought that we understood Quantum Theory then she had failed. It was thought provoking to consider the nature of Evil. Julie Arliss is an exceptionally talented and experienced academic who works with G&T students internationally. She kept her audience enthralled whenever she was centre stage.

Her allusions to popular culture meant that the material was accessible to the students and there were a number of light moments. Jeremy Hodges presentation on ‘Being the best you can be’ was a reminder of the difference between a gifted learner and a talented one. The debate at the end of the day between the two presenters on Animal Rights was an energetic one.

Congratulations to Riley Irwin for accepting an invitation to take the microphone for an opinion on who had won and why! We like High boys who aren’t afraid to put an opinion out there! A public forum which includes some of the best and brightest students is potentially a scary place but Riley wasn’t daunted.

Thank you to Dr Jaggar for making it possible for the students to attend the conference and thanks also to Mr Cipolla for being our driver!

Year 12 Interviews
All Year 12 are required to have an interview with the Careers Adviser during Term 2 or Term 3 to discuss all aspects of post-school education including ATAR, UAC, scholarships, preferences etc.

Interviews are booked online through the Student Portal. Students should access the Careers Interviews section of the Student Portal and select a time for interview. There are two slots per period that the Careers Adviser is available.

Football Barbecue

There will be a football barbecue at the Moore Park West gate closest to the school from 8.00am this Saturday 20th May.

Please come and buy a delicious sausage sandwich or egg and bacon roll. All money raised will go to supporting the football programme at High.

What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library?

The McDonald Senior Library is proud to present the inaugural SYDNEY BOYS HIGH FILM FESTIVAL. Several fantastic anime films will be screened in the Senior Library during weeks 6 and 7 this term at lunch time.

Films featured in this event include The Lost Thing an animated short film by the creator of the picture book with the same title by Shaun Tan. This film won an AFI award and an Oscar in the Academy awards this year and is about a small boy who finds a mysterious “thing” on the beach which he tries desperately to find somewhere for it to belong!

We will also be showing two other anime films by Hayao Miyazaki who is considered a National Living Treasure in Japan and who has produced many amazing animated feature films since establishing Studio Ghibli in 1985.

Some of you may find a graphic text to use as related material for your English or Visual Arts work. So don’t forget to reserve your lunch hours and come along to see and enjoy some amazing and unique films before you start the very busy preparation period before your next exams and assessments!

Because winter is here, menu items such as fruit salad are not available in winter - we do have apples, mandarins and pears for those people who enjoy a fresh fruit fix though. In winter, we spend a lot more time chopping vegetables etc in order to prepare a greater variety of hot food so don’t have the time to prepare our fresh summer items as well.

Remember if there is something you would like for lunch, then the best – and only - way you are sure to get it is by ordering!!

SBHS Debating

Well done to both Year 11 and Year 12 teams who were victorious in the Eastside Finals last week. The adjudicators made a special comment that the standard of debating from Sydney Boys High was exceptionally high. Thank you to the coaches: Michael and Kelvin for their continued hard work and effort with these teams. This week we must set our minds to the FED Semi Finals. All Year groups are in the Semi Finals apart from Year 7 who are in a play-off to see if they make the Semi Finals next week. I wish you all good luck and look forward to a great evening of debating.

Eastside Year 12

After successfully winning their semi-final debates last week, our Years 11 and 12 teams returned to SCEGGS for the final. Debating the topic That Australia should legalise commercial surrogacy, our Year 11s were victorious on the affirmative against a strong Reddam team. The Year 12s might as well have been debating at Sydney Girls after they arrived with almost twenty supporters, filling the debate room. Despite this, we put in a very strong performance on the negative, and were unanimously declared Eastside victors. Congrats to both teams on continuing High’s dominance at a senior level.

Eastside Final Year 11 Report

Year 11 was faced with a tough Eastside final debate against Reddam, who so far were undefeated. With the topic “that Australia should legalise commercial surrogacy,” High argued an affirmative case centred around the idea that people can choose to become commercial surrogates and how this would provide alternatives for couples who can’t have children. As the debate developed some interesting propositions were made, such as Reddam saying that because High’s all male team couldn’t have babies that invalidated the idea that people can make an informed choice about this. However at the end of the debate we snuck home as winners on a split decision and gave High dual wins in the Years 11 and 12 divisions.

Year 7 New Instrumentalists

ALL New Year 7 students who began lessons on an instrument last term are encouraged to join the Training Concert Band (Woodwind/Brass/Percussion) and Junior String Ensemble (Strings) this term. Please see below the rehearsal timetable and rooms and turn up with your instruments. Award scheme points apply!

Music Parking

There will be a Music Parking this Sunday the 22nd of May from 10:30am-3:30pm for two marches. Kick off for the Swans is 2.10pm and Roosters match kick off is 3.00pm. Year 11 HSC accelerated Music student, Ennes Mehmedbasic will be performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for two Oboes in D minor as a featuring soloist, with Orchestra 143 on Sunday 22nd May 2011 at 2:30pm St James’ Anglican Church, King St, Turramurra and on Sunday 29th May 2011 at 2:30pm Macquarie Theatre, Macquarie University. Please come along and support one of our fine young musicians and hear him perform. See Music Staff for further information on ticketing.

Volleyball

Last Saturday, 14th May there was the first match of the volleyball season against Newington. In a good match High won by 3-0 in both First and Seconds. Across town, Grammar defeated Scots by 3-1 and 3-0 in Seconds and Firsts respectively. This Saturday, we go to Scots – it looks like being a good season.

We can’t just rely on our scores. It’s important to see how accurate individual players are. To help, we have started a system of data gathering to highlight good performances and also show where more work is needed. Our stats against Newington show:
